Worship Services at BVP in March Sunday 1st March 11.00 am Morning Service Preacher Rev. Campbell Mackinnon 6.30 pm Evening Service Preacher Rev. Campbell Mackinnon March 2015 Sunday 8th March 11.00 am Service of Holy Communion Preacher Rev. Campbell Mackinnon Dear Friends, (There is no evening service) If, instead of starting at the beginning of the Herald, you have started in the middle you may be mystified by the pages entitled ‘Spot the Difference.’ Let me explain. 11.00 am Morning Service Preacher Rev. Campbell Mackinnon At our last Session Meeting we had a discussion, very ably led by Ranald McTaggart and David Hay, regarding the installation of a proper digital projection system in the church. Part of my contribution to the debate was to say that one thing I would very much like to do is put up a slide with the Ten Commandments on one side and the New Covenant on the other and lead a discussion in the congregation about the difference between the two. This suggestion has fired John Goddard’s imagination and hence the two pages. Sunday 15th March 6.30 pm Evening Service Preacher Rev. Campbell Mackinnon Sunday 22nd March 11.00 am Morning Service Preacher Rev. Campbell Mackinnon (There is no evening service) Sunday 29th March 11.00 am Morning Service Preacher Rev. Campbell Mackinnon Focus on Church Twinning At a lunch after this service, Rebecca McGonigle (Church of Scotland’s World Mission Council) will speak on Twinning 6.30 pm Evening Service Preacher Rev. Campbell Mackinnon The J team and Bible Class join in the morning worship before they leave for their own classes A covenant sets out the terms of a relationship. When a couple marry they enter a ‘covenant relationship’ whereby they promise to love each other ‘for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health till God shall separate them by death’. The Ten Commandments form part of the Old Covenant that set out the relationship between God and His people in the Old Testament times. Then the passage from Jeremiah sets out the new relationship God is going to make with His people after the coming of the Messiah. So our new relationship with God is described in the passage from Jeremiah. What I would like you to do is read the Ten Commandments and then read the passage from Jeremiah and then ask yourself some questions. Who has to do the work in the Old Covenant? Who has to do the work in the New? What are the benefits living in a New Covenant relationship with God? The New Covenant has no list of commands; does that mean the Commandments have no place in our lives? Since Jesus said He did not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets, but to fulfil them; how are commandments to be fulfilled in us? How does God do that? Then ask yourself if you think and live as someone who is in an old covenant relationship with God or as someone who has entered this new relationship. These are not easy questions to grapple with, so take time and as you look at these two Covenants you will find wonderful new thoughts about God and His relationship with you beginning to bubble up inside you. It then takes even longer to work out the implications of these thoughts. But as you think about the Old Covenant and leaving an old way of thinking behind and living in in a new Covenant relationship with God a whole new way of life begins to emerge. I first discovered the New Covenant forty years ago; it was one of the most exciting discoveries of my life. Reading the New Covenant I learned that God was not a demanding despot who stood over me demanding more and more, but a friend who loves me and will and look after me and not only forgive me but also share with me His joy and delight in His goodness. That is quite a discovery! The badminton was very odd. No intermediates turned up on the night and they were rescheduled for the second session. Rory Leanord took silver in this competition. The badminton was closely followed by the Scripture Knowledge and Masterteam competitions. As an experiment we held these on the same night. The 101 took second place in the Scripture Knowledge and 4th in the Masterteam. The swimming gala was held on Sunday 15th over at Castlemilk. We took 2nd in the Battalion and 1st in Partick District. Scott Deans won 4 silvers and a bronze; Stewart Leanord won 3 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Rory Leanord won a silver and a bronze. Well done to all the boys who have taken part in all the competitions. The Junior Section will be hosting the Potted Sports in March, which will hopefully be a very busy night for us all. Colin Murray, Captain [email protected] Church Twinning – New Date Your friend and minister Campbell Mackinnon Death We have had a busy start to the year. The Company Section seniors took part in a Go Karting evening. It was an interesting night – petrol, speed and a few black flags for dangerous driving. However the boys all enjoyed it and Scott Deans took second place in the driver’s competition. Unfortunately, it was necessary to re-schedule the visit of Rebecca McGonigle to our church and she will now come on Sunday 29th March 2015. Church Roll Mrs Agnes Chalmers (District 10) Andy Coghill Rollkeeper Rebecca works for the Church of Scotland’s World Mission Council and will give a presentation on Church Twinning during a ‘soup and sandwich’ lunch. This will be a very informative event and you will learn all about Twinning and how our church and our congregation could benefit from being involved. Please make a note of the revised date in your diary and try to attend immediately after our morning Family Service. If you have any questions about Twinning, please speak to me or Ranald McTaggart any Sunday in church. Robert Belmore A New Projector System for BVP The Guild At February’s Kirk Session Meeting, elders discussed whether or not we should install a digital projector system in the sanctuary of BVP. Ranald McTaggart had prepared a paper on this issue for discussion. In the paper, Ranald put forward possible uses for such a system within the sanctuary which included – • Welcome notices • Info on J Team/Bible Class • Key Intimations • Prayer news • Words for hymns/songs • Key Bible passages • Children’s addresses • Possible use during weddings/funerals • Special worship events • Evangelistic events • Community events The arguments for and against were debated at length and at the conclusion of the debate the majority of elders were in favour of installing such a system. It should be noted that the installation of such a system will be in tandem with a review of the heating system in the church, and David Hay, Property Convener, has been tasked with coming up with a plan for an improved and reliable heating system. Please be assured that we will keep you informed of any developments in both of these areas as and when they take place. If you have any questions regarding the above please feel free to speak with me at any time. Many thanks to those who set up for, attended, baked for, helped at and donated to our Guild Coffee Morning in February. Your support was much appreciated. The total was announced in Church – this article has to be submitted before the event! Derek Robertson The Church Heating System The Board are reviewing the church heating with the intention of undertaking a phased replacement of the boilers. We currently have boilers in 3 locations within the church buildings (below the sanctuary, beside the kitchen and upstairs). The new boilers will be more efficient allowing greater warmth to be provided for less gas. The possibility of splitting the halls into 2 heating zones is also being explored to avoid the need to heat spaces that are not being used. Further updates will be provided in the months ahead. David Hay On March 10th we have a male nurse giving us a talk entitled 'Angels with Beards' and then the session closes on the 24th with the A.G.M. and Bring and Buy sale. Campbell Joss, Treasurer Chalk and Cheese Special And God spoke all these words: 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before[a] me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. 8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 “Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbour’s house. You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.” Exodus 20:1-17 Spot the Difference. 31 "Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbour and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more." Jeremiah 31:31–34 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second. 8 For he finds fault with them when he says: "Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, 9 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 11 And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. 12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more." 13 In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. Hebrews 8:7–13 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Matt 26:28 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 1 Cor. 11:25 Prayer Points Learn to ‘Cast’ ‘Cast all your anxiety on him.’ Safeguarding 1 Peter 5:7 Learn to ‘cast all your anxiety on him’. Only when you have done that will you be able to ‘catch yourself’ when you begin to open the door to worry, allowing it to move in, set up shop and start doing business. What’s your top ten list of worries? Health? Money? A relationship? Children? Your looks? Get to know your most common worries so well that you’re able to treat them like mosquitoes. You don’t procrastinate when a blood-sucking bug lights on your skin. You don’t say, ‘I’ll take care of it in a moment.’ No, you give the creature the slap it deserves. Be equally decisive with anxiety. The moment a worry surfaces, deal with it. Don’t dwell on it. Head it off before it gets the best of you. Instead of ulcerating over what your boss thinks, ask him. Before you diagnose that mole as a cancer, have it examined. Instead of assuming that you’ll never get out of debt, consult an expert, draw up a plan, and take back your power. As long as you’re willing to live with worry, you’ll never overcome it. Instead of allowing worry to cast a big shadow over a small problem, rise up in faith and say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?’ (Hebrews 13:6 NKJV). Who’s your helper? The Lord! So give your worries to Him and don’t take them back. The Psalmist said, ‘Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken’ (Psalms 55:22 NIV). Peter writes, ‘Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.’ Learn to ‘cast’. Copied with permission from "The Word for Today." The notification will be by email rather than by post. At the last count we still have 8 – 10 volunteers who require to change to the PVG system. I will be approaching these people in the next few weeks. As ever, if you wish to volunteer to carry out work with children or vulnerable adults then please contact me regarding disclosure. I have now received photo consent forms from the J Team and Bible Class. This means that we are now able to display the images of our young people in the hall and in our magazine. May I thank you all for your co-operation with this. MAF’s small aircraft are capable of landing on small grass airstrips and are able to deliver much needed medical supplies for clinics and to fly in doctors or medical missionaries. In some of the more remote locations, those who are sick or injured quite often require to be evacuated to hospital and a two hour journey by plane can often avoid a two day journey by road over rough and sometimes dangerous terrain. MAF are bringing hope and relief to thousands of people who are living in desperate circumstances and in South Sudan they are flying in vital food supplies and drinking water.
