, At this time,
we will be holding an eLearning makeup day on Saturday, March 21st
.
The purpose is twofold: First, we have used all of our builtin snow days and we would like to make up one of those four missed days as insurance against further closings. Second, and more importantly, we would like to use this March 21st date to orient everyone teachers, parents, and students with the eLearning experience. We will not only be making up a day, but we will be working through the process so that we can begin to use the eLearning option when we do have to close in the future. This will be our trial run. Over the course of the next few weeks we will be providing further details and instructions regarding the makeup day. For now, please read through this overview of the major components related to the day. Our students in grades 68 have been using their iPads all year and they have been taking them home for over a month, so in these grades we have established a successful framework and venue for eLearning. For our students in grades K5, our teachers are also now ready to provide lessons via the internet. We are developing eLearning links on our school website for each grade level. Students will be able to easily access their assignments for the day and receive the necessary instruction, materials, directions, and support to make the experience successful. Don’t worry. We will walk all of you, our students and parents, through this inaugural process. In the weeks before the makeup day your children will be instructed on how to access the sites that they will need for the day. Additionally, all students will receive a Snow Day folder/file to keep at home to assist with the makeup day. The folder will provide general materials (graphic organizers, paper, reference charts, etc.) and information for parents (directions, support contact information, etc.) for reference to help assist your children in working through the Snow Day makeup lessons. We know that most of our families have internet capability in the home, but we are willing to assist with other options for those who do not have internet access. We will have computers available for student use after school on Thursday, March 19th from 3:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. and on Saturday, March 21st from 9:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. Also, our Technology Director, Mrs. Pam Bojrab and our Computer Teacher, Mrs. Pam McGraw, as well as various teachers and administrators, will be available for you if you need technical assistance. More detailed contact information (times, email contacts, phone support, etc.) will be sent home before March 18th. This inaugural March 21st makeup day will be a slow roll out. The window for students to begin working on assignments would open on Wednesday, March 18th, at 3:00 p.m. and all assignments would be due on Wednesday, March 25th at 8:00 a.m. This window of five instructional days (counting Saturday) will provide students ample time to complete the material and allow teachers time to provide student and parent support and monitor and collect the assignments as they are completed. Please understand, as March 21st will count as an official day of school, if a student does not complete the work assigned in the time period provided, barring extenuating circumstances, the student will be marked as an unexcused absence and all assignments will be counted as late and/or missing work. Here a few more details that may answer questions formulating in your mind at this time. eLearning 10 Points of Explanation Regarding Snow and/or Makeup Days 1. Teachers will create online lessons that should take not more than 5 hours of your child’s time. We do not expect students to be on a computer, tablet, or other electronic device for 5 hours. The day will not be scheduled in this manner. We also understand that some families have many siblings and one computer. Students will be able to access the day’s assignments/directions through our school website and begin working onandoff line, alternating turns throughout the day. 2. ELearning can take place at any time during a snow day, or during a makeup day time window, as long as the work is completed in the time period allowed or does not take more than 5 hours on the day it is assigned. 3. The lessons will be aligned to our school’s curriculum and reflect current material being covered in class. 4. Assignments will be completed online when appropriate and submitted electronically, while other assignments may be completed on paper and turned in during the time period allowed. 5. Teachers will provide instructions on how to access eLearning content through a parent letter and may provide generic materials necessary in a Snow Day folder/file that you should keep in a safe place at home. 6. The websites and/or MyBigCampus (grades 68) will be available and updated by 9 AM if school is cancelled for the day. When a makeup day is planned after the actual snow day, assignment access windows will be communicated for each makeup event. 7. Teachers will provide contact information and digital office hours for parents and student to email questions during the Snow Day and/or makeup day. 8. Lessons will not require that anything be printed in order to complete them. 9. If you have a child with special needs, you will receive an email from a resource teacher with instructions specifically for your child. 10. We recognize unforeseen circumstances such as power outages may interrupt learning. We will consider these situations on an individual basis. If you have any other questions, please send them to

NO SCHOOL March 30 April 3 Spring Break ISTEP/IREAD
The State of Indiana has designated Wednesday, February 25 through Friday, March 13 as the ISTEP part 1 testing window. St. Charles will administer the tests to students in grades 38, Monday, March 2, through Thursday, March 5. The remaining days will be used for makeup tests as needed. The tests for part 1 are paperandpencil. (Part 2, later in spring, is online.) Makeup tests will be given to students who have been absent, but these are not in the best testing environment, as testing space and test administrators are not as readily available. Please help the students to be in school and on time. Testing will be the first part of every day, immediately following morning announcements and routine or Mass. The link below to frequently asked questions may answer some of your questions.
http://image.exct.net/lib/fef31073726d01/m/1/ISTEP+Parent+faq+1.pdf As you may know, in March 2010 the Indiana General Assembly passed House Enrolled Act 1367 (P.L. 109) requiring the evaluation of reading skills for all third grade students. This legislation was developed to ensure students can read at grade level prior to fourth grade. As a result, all students in grade 3 will take IREAD during the designated testing window of March 12 18. This test will be done online and should be completed, if students are not absent, in two days. Our third grade students will test on Thursday and Friday, March 1213. Makeup tests will be given on the remaining days. Further information is available at http://www.doe.in.gov/assessment/iread3
ISTEP part 2 testing window will be April 27 through May 15 for all students in grades 3 through 8 and will be online. For this part of the test students will be using their iPads (grades 678) or our school computers, desktop and laptop (grades 345). Again, we ask that no appointments be scheduled for this time, ensuring that the students will not be absent during testing.
