Target Audience
This conference is open for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses in
the following specialties: Emergency medicine, trauma, orthopedics, critical care, pulmonary,
hospitalists, geriatric medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, family medicine, general
practice, respiratory and internal medicine. In addition, pharmacists, physical therapists, health
professional students and allied health professionals who care for trauma patients are welcome
to attend.
Symposium Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
• Discuss the reality of our reactions, education and training
• Define the adrenaline factor and its relationship to what we do
• Discuss literature regarding chest tube caliber for management of thoracic trauma
• Describe ideal management of tension pneumothorax and simple pneumothorax
• Identify new trends in street drug use and legal highs
• Discuss some of the geographic, demographic and cultural factors of drug use
• List priorities in management of patients with extremity hemorrhage
• Describe sources of extremity hemorrhage
• Review traditional approaches to pain management and integrate innovative methods
of progressive treatment
• Discuss the use of decreased pain management in the elderly trauma patient
• Identify the primary reasonability entrusted to each of us during patient care
• Discuss and be able to relate personal and professional relationships to critical care
• List best practice for prevention methods to deal with an active shooter in the field, emergency department, and hospital
• Describe care of the trauma patient during an active shooter scenario
• Discuss the legal and ethical issues of caring for trauma patients
• Describe appropriate documentation of ethical issues
