From the Students Desk
Hartney School has recently introduced a revamped version of the Visions and
Ventures class. I know what you’re thinking as you sit there sipping on your coffee,
“What is Visions and Ventures?” I thought the same thing when faced with my new
class schedule. What we are is a group of Grade 11’s and 12’s whose goal is to
strengthen the relationship between the school and community. How are we going to
do that? It’s a good question isn’t it? Right now we are looking into what we feel this
little slice of heaven, we call Hartney, needs. We hope to take on one big project and
see it through all of the necessary phases. On top of that we plan on doing many little
projects. These little things would include this monthly write up keeping you, the
residents of Hartney and area, up to date on the happenings in Hartney School. We
are working very closely with Deb Turner to take on projects here and there.
On February 13th we celebrated Valentine’s Day. Student Council put on the
heart game from Grades 5-12. Each student received a heart with their name on it, in
the morning girls could not talk to boys or they would steal their hearts. Once lunch
rolled around it switched, the boys could not talk to the girls. Student Council also did
“Have a Crush? Give a Crush!”. Over 80 Crushes were handed out to high school
students. Love was in the air as the K-6 classes spent their afternoons partying away
and snacking on various pink and red treats.

If you have any suggestions for our Visions and Ventures class, please feel
Municipal Office free to contact the school with your ideas. We are always looking for input.

FUN FACT:
PI DAY:
No, not the Blueberry type,
put Pi, the 16th letter of the
Greek alphabet Day. In
mathematics, it serves as the
symbol for the ratio of the
circumference of a circle to its
diameter. Pi is a transcendental
number, meaning it will repeat
infinitely without ever
appearing exactly the same. Pi
has been calculated to over
51 billion decimal places with
the use of computers.
However Pi is usually calculated
to 3 digits, 3.14. Therefore
March 14 is Pi day.

TIME TO SPRING AHEAD
Daylight Saving Time STARTS on
Sunday, March 8, 2015
Turn your clocks AHEAD 1 hour
At the beginning of the Daylight Saving Time (DST) period in the spring clocks are
moved forward, by one hour. When DST ends in fall (autumn), clocks are turned back
again. DST does not add daylight but it gives more usable hours of daylight. In that sense,
DST “saves” daylight, especially during the winter months when the days get colder and
darker. Standard time refers to time without DST.

There is a special kind of feeling
That is meant for you alone,
A special place within our hearts
That only you can own.
It is said time is a healer,
We are not sure that is true,
For there is not a day goes by,
That we do not think of you.

For here on earth, he was one of the best.”

REEVE’s REPORT
Welcome from the Reeve of the newly established Municipality of Grassland. We are into the new amalgamation of
Cameron, Hartney and Whitewater. Everything is progressing with a positive approach and we are all adjusting to new
committees and duties they require. You will see very little difference with the day to day operations of public works.
The office staff is still adjusting to their new roles and responsibilities. We are working hard to try to make everything
operate as in the past, but some committees will be combining through the municipality to be as effective as possible.
Our meetings are held twice a month, the second Tuesday and the fourth Thursday in the month. These meeting are
open to the public and we encourage your participation and involvement with council. With having two meetings a
month we are hoping to answer and address all issues of the residents.
A contest was held with ideas needed for a new logo for the municipality. We received some great ideas from the
schools in Minto and the Elgin and Lauder colonies. The council has selected three winners with an effort being made to
also amalgamate these entries into our new seal. Stay posted for the reveal of our seal in the near future.
At the time of this report, we have just received a heavy snow fall. With the municipality now 42 miles wide, we have
found that there can be more problems in one area over the other with such a big distance. With this in mind, we are
staying with the emergency plans in place for all our communities. Be assured that all consideration is given to your
area, but please contact your councilor or the office in Hartney or Minto if you see a situation that needs to be addressed.
Our next meetings will be addressing the budget of the new municipality. It will take a lot of time and discussion to
have a budget that addresses all the needs of such a large area. If you have any concerns or advice in the budget review,
please contact your councilor, office or myself to discuss the matter. When the initial budget is ready, there will be a
public meeting to review the plan. The date and location will be advertised at a later time.
Once again, please feel free to contact any one of the council of the Municipality of Grassland. We are your elected
representatives. We are here to represent you to our best ability. I hope we can provide the base for a successful merger
of all our communities.

Annual Meetings are completed. Thanks to all who prepared 2014 reports. We look forward to a
good 2015 year! Next Official Board Meeting is Wed. April 15th at 7.30 in Hartney.
It has been noticed by several Hartney Church members that there are numerous beautiful pots,
pans, cake pans, etc., in the church kitchen, which we believe were left after the last “Dinner to
the Door”. These pots, pans, etc. are really nice and we’re sure that you must be missing them in
your kitchen. Please pick yours up asap from the kitchen of the church (in the basement) so that
they will not be disposed of. Thanks for your attention to this matter.
In preparation for Easter consider Baptism, Confirmation, or Profession of Faith? Call or email
Doug Craig if this is on your mind.
Are you on PAR (PRE- Authorized Remittance)? The benefits to you are: regular support of your
church; continual support of your home church and the Mission and Service Fund even when you
are away. See your church treasurer if you want to get involved.

Municipal Council. Those years were
truly memorable and in some cases
challenging. I enjoyed working with some
very good people both office staff,
employees and follow council members.
I still maintain that local government
participation is a very important part in
the survival of our rural areas.
