PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Greetings from the Board of Directors and the
staff of the Danish Canadian Club.
2015 started off with great weather for
January, which definitely helps to shorten the
Calgary winter.
John
Steffensen
President
Since the last newsletter, the DCC had a busy
December with scheduled social functions
thru to a sold out New Years Gala, plus various
private functions. January was also a busy
month at the club.
At the January board meeting, Peter reviewed the financials with
the board which indicated the DCC is on the road to recovery
from the past fiscal year which was adversely affected by the
2013 flood.
Bente was also busy organizing upcoming social events, which
include the Valentines Party, Feb 20th, Katten af Tønden,
March 8th, Hawaiian Party, May 8th, and the Stampede
Breakfast, July 11th.
If you would like to volunteer to help Bente out with these
functions, please contact Bente.
Recognizing the need to get more attendance at these events,
we discussed making these events more of a family event.
Accordingly, the Hawaiian Night will be open to all family members,
young and old. More details are noted in the newsletter.
After ongoing efforts of Jens Laursen for a few years and more
recently Ben Kromand, the club successfully found a buyer
for the Stampede float and trailer. Ben provided the following
background information about the DCC float:
Ben Kromand
Past President &
Procedural Advisement
Bente Dalberg
Social Director
Pernille Jakobsen
Director, Memberships
& Scholarships
D.C.C. OVER 55
Other upcoming events at the club include:
- 28th Annual Great Dames Gala, "Bombshell Ball" March 7th
- The Danish Canadian National Museum Fund raiser and the
Danish Canadian Club Calgary for an "Evening of fierce Vikings,
a fantastic auction, food and entertainment" March 14th
The annual national Danish Canadian Conference will be held
at the Inn at Westminster Quay in New Westminster, B.C.,
overlooking the Fraser River, from May 21 to 24, 2015. The
host is The Danish House Society, Burnaby. The theme of the
Conference is “Keeping Traditions Alive”.
The conference will be followed by The Danish Heritage Seminar
at Harrison Hot Springs.
Thanks again to the Peter and his staff, volunteers, board
members, and DCC members for continuing to make the DCC a
successful and vibrant club.

"The sale marks the end of an annual tradition that some club
volunteers started about 40 years ago with the creation of a
number of prize winning floats over the years. I am told that the
annual construction gatherings were also a great social gathering
for the members. The names of all the volunteers involved would
fill a book with the last three years being done by Jens Laursen
and his group of happy Naver Club volunteers. We understand
the float will be in the Stampede parade this year designed to
advertise the Pan American games in Toronto. Jens and Dennis
Olsen took the float on its last journey under the DCC banner to
the new owner."

TREASURE
DRAW
There has been a bit of confusion as to how the treasure draw works.
At the end of the day we take and list all the names and numbers of
people who put in their loonie.
We then draw a membership card out of a drum with all the member cards
in it, and if we have a match with someone who put their loonie in that day
the pot is won, if not the pot will keep building up till we have a match.

ATTENTION STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS
2015 Danish Canadian Conference
The Danish Canadian Club Calgary is proud to offer two $2,000
scholarships to bright scholars in our community. This year,
the DCC is also offering a third scholarship as Alice and Hans
Sorensen have donated $2,000 to honour the memory of their
grandson Thomas.
The annual national
Danish
Canadian
Conference
will
be
held at the Inn at
Westminster Quay in
New Westminster, B.C.,
overlooking the Fraser
River, from May 21 to 24,
2015. The host is The
Danish House Society,
Burnaby. The theme of the Conference is “Keeping Traditions
Alive”. Speakers will include MLA Judy Darcy, whose parents
were immigrants from Denmark; Kjeld Christensen who will
do a presentation on the brand new Dania Home; and Pastor
Birgitte Saltorp, who will speak about Danish women getting
the right to vote in 1915. There will also be presentations by
the Burnaby Heritage Museum and the Scandinavian Cultural
Society. Entertainment at the Saturday Banquet will include
the Tivoli Singers, the Scandinavian Dancers and the Silver
Stars Band. The Conference, which is open is everyone, is an
opportunity to meet Danes from across Canada; to network; to
exchange ideas and experiences; and to socialize and have fun.
On the Sunday there will be breakfast at the Danish Lutheran
Church and a traditional Danish lunch at the Scandinavian
Centre in Burnaby. For more information contact Ed Kuhlman
at [email protected]
To qualify for this year’s scholarships, you must meet the following
criteria:
• Show proof of good academic standing by attaching proof of

will be evaluated based on the course level completed;
• Be of good character. We require written statements from two
references, such as high school administration, employers
(paid and/or volunteer work), sports coaches etc.;
•
Proof of registration in a program at a post-secondary
educational institution, and
•
Preference will be given to candidates who can show a
connection to the DCC or Danish community.
Applications should consist of a well-written one page letter
stating your reasons for requesting this scholarship, and should
also describe your personal interests, hobbies, and goals. You
should also outline your extracurricular activities, contributions to
the community, motivations for making these efforts, as well as
show proof of a need for these funds.
To be considered for the Danish Canadian Club’s 2015
scholarship, the application including the abovementioned
requirements and the applicant’s address must be provided to
The Danish Canadian Club’s office, “Attention Scholarships”, or

Dual Citizenship Approved by
Danish Parliament
On Thursday December 18, 2014 the Danish parliament passed
legislation allowing dual citizenship in Denmark. The new law will
take effect on September 1, 2015.
Danish Spirit Choir
Practice:
Danish Lutheran Church
210 - 10 Avenue N.E.
Thursdays @ 7:30 p.m.
September to the end of December
Contact:
Margit (403) 286-2528 or Ketty (403) 270-3935
We need: Alto and Base voices (sopranos welcome)
We sing a large repertoire of both Danish and English songs
and hymns.
Come join us – singing is fun, good for the soul and a great
stress releaser.
The new law will permit foreigners to obtain Danish citizenship
without giving up the citizenship of their own country, and it will
give Danes who have lost their Danish citizenship as a result of
obtaining foreign citizenship the possibility to reclaim it.
The current rules will continue to apply until the law comes into
force. This means that Danish citizens who obtain citizenship in
another country before September 1, 2015 will lose their Danish
citizenship.
Former Danish nationals who have lost their Danish citizenship
due to obtaining foreign citizenship will be able to submit a
statement to the Danish state administration between September
1, 2015 and August 31, 2020. If certain specified requirements
are met one will be able to regain his/her Danish citizenship.
