John Steffensen President Since the last newsletter, the DCC had a busy December with scheduled social functions thru to a sold out New Years Gala, plus various private functions. January was also a busy month at the club. At the January board meeting, Peter reviewed the financials with the board which indicated the DCC is on the road to recovery from the past fiscal year which was adversely affected by the 2013 flood. Bente was also busy organizing upcoming social events, which include the Valentines Party, Feb 20th, Katten af Tønden, March 8th, Hawaiian Party, May 8th, and the Stampede Breakfast, July 11th. If you would like to volunteer to help Bente out with these functions, please contact Bente. Recognizing the need to get more attendance at these events, we discussed making these events more of a family event. Accordingly, the Hawaiian Night will be open to all family members, young and old. More details are noted in the newsletter. After ongoing efforts of Jens Laursen for a few years and more recently Ben Kromand, the club successfully found a buyer for the Stampede float and trailer. Ben provided the following background information about the DCC float: Ben Kromand Past President & Procedural Advisement Bente Dalberg Social Director Pernille Jakobsen Director, Memberships & Scholarships D.C.C. OVER 55 Other upcoming events at the club include: - 28th Annual Great Dames Gala, "Bombshell Ball" March 7th - The Danish Canadian National Museum Fund raiser and the Danish Canadian Club Calgary for an "Evening of fierce Vikings, a fantastic auction, food and entertainment" March 14th The annual national Danish Canadian Conference will be held at the Inn at Westminster Quay in New Westminster, B.C., overlooking the Fraser River, from May 21 to 24, 2015. The host is The Danish House Society, Burnaby. The theme of the Conference is “Keeping Traditions Alive”. The conference will be followed by The Danish Heritage Seminar at Harrison Hot Springs. Thanks again to the Peter and his staff, volunteers, board members, and DCC members for continuing to make the DCC a successful and vibrant club. I am told that the annual construction gatherings were also a great social gathering for the members. The names of all the volunteers involved would fill a book with the last three years being done by Jens Laursen and his group of happy Naver Club volunteers. We understand the float will be in the Stampede parade this year designed to advertise the Pan American games in Toronto. Jens and Dennis Olsen took the float on its last journey under the DCC banner to the new owner." The new law will permit foreigners to obtain Danish citizenship without giving up the citizenship of their own country, and it will give Danes who have lost their Danish citizenship as a result of obtaining foreign citizenship the possibility to reclaim it. The current rules will continue to apply until the law comes into force. This means that Danish citizens who obtain citizenship in another country before September 1, 2015 will lose their Danish citizenship. Former Danish nationals who have lost their Danish citizenship due to obtaining foreign citizenship will be able to submit a statement to the Danish state administration between September 1, 2015 and August 31, 2020. If certain specified requirements are met one will be able to regain his/her Danish citizenship. 12 March / April 2015 7 2 6 0 - 11 S t r e e t S .
