The Okaihau Breeze 2015/03 The Okaihau College Newsletter Principal’s Panui Year 7 Class Trip Last Friday I had the pleasure of lunch with our Year 8 s and their whanau. The food had been prepared, with pride, by the students and was enjoyed by all. It is gratifying to see that the number of whanau willing, and of course able, to support our students continues to grow and this was a valuable chance to get feedback on how things are progressing. It is a reminder that we are in a partnership of students, staff and whanau. It was amazing and a great experience to start our first year of college. Going on a class trip on Thursday 12th February everyone was excited. NO uniform! Mufti. No work. No seniors. “YAY,” I thought. Celebration of Excellence Assembly We extend a warm welcome to all parents, caregivers and supporters of the school to attend our first Celebration of Excellence Assembly for the year. This is being held in the school hall at 9.00am on Monday 9 March 2015. The guest speaker is former student Michael Bullen who now runs a successful business in Auckland. Any questions, please contact Deputy Principal, Mrs Karen Campbell “Let’s go,” said Miss Johnson. Everyone piled up and we hopped in our vans. Before we left Miss Johnson said, “We’ll be stopping in at the Fire Museum for about an hour.” We were all still excited. When we got there we saw a lot of old historical fire engines that were a lot different to the new fire engines you see rushing down the road. We went on an AMAZING tour. We even got to sit in the fire engine and wear the masks – they umm…. Stunk! When the tour was finished we looked at all of the badges. There were soo many. There were even some creepyish manikins. After the visit to the fire museum we carried on our journey to Forest Pools. When we go there we all ran straight to the river and were keen to jump in but first we had to go over the safety rules. We had about an hour of games, e.g. the bucket competition. My team won, wink, wink! After swimming a few kids and I wanted to catch an eel. Good luck! During lunch Tayla-Rose and I sat down to eat and everyone followed us. We soon had the whole class sitting by us so I go out my speaker and we all just danced. I would love to do this again. Thanks to all who helped that day happen. Kowhai Waa, 7AJ I’m excited yet nervous. I mean Forest Pools! What could be better? Getting to know my classmates or swimming? I’m lining up. “Thursday 12th February 2015 and we are going to Forest Pools!” I say. Dental Bus The Ngati Hine Health Trust Dental Bus has arrived to see Year 7 and 8 students. Many students are not enrolled with them so will not been sent for a check up at school. If you wish to check on your child’s dental enrolment please contact Beth at the Student Centre – Ph. ext. 708 or [email protected]. It is parent’s responsibility to enrol their child with the dentist of their choice. If any students in Years 9-13 need relief of pain treatment please contact the Student Centre and we will try and arrange a special appointment for them. “Let’s go!” Miss Johnson says. “Okay people, before this happens we are going to the Fire Museum!” I saw the suits they wear. We saw what masks they wear and we got to sit in a fire engine! We finally arrive at Forest Pools, getting ready for a lot of fun activities like Tug ’o’ War, water bucket and photo scavenger hunt. I couldn’t wait for it. I really wanted to do the activitites and get along with my class. My team for Tug ‘o’ War won twice but lost once. I got dragged. Photo scavenger hunt was cool because my team won fairly and happy. The water bucket challenge was cool but we didn’t work well. Once we went back, I went home with my Mum. But I got along with my classmates a lot. I appreciate my classmates a lot. I will not forget this special moment.
