IN FREIBURG
No mainstream at all:

Tips for your stay
Join in - build some “stone men”
Freiburger Film Forum,
13th to 17th May 2015
In cinemas there is more to be
discovered than James Bond, Indiana
Jones or Harry Potter even if Hollywood dominates the headlines of the
cinema-themed parts of our newspapers.
But outside the U.S. and outside of
Europe stunning films are created,
too - and during one of Europe’s
most respected events of its kind, the
Freiburger Film Forum, you can experience those films providing an
entirely different cultural background than “usual”.
African, Asian, (South) American
and Oceanian Films will be shown and in addition there will be readings, lectures, exhibitions, discussions and workshops - so whatever a
cineast may desire will be on offer.
You can find more information
(also in English) at www.freiburgerfilmforum.de.

When days get warmer you can join in one of the most popular leisure activities in Freiburg: Build some “stone men” in the Dreisam.
You could also describe it as a modern version of a Kneipp Cure, because
while building these usually very short-lived small works of art you will be
standing in the quite cool water of the “river” Dreisam (which also provides the
water for the famous “Bächle” (streams) in Freiburg, by the way)
As long as you do not hinder the stream course it is allowed to build as many
“stone men” as you want - and since the 1980s this “art form” became a downright cult in Freiburg. Mostly these very short lived works are to be found at the
“Ochsenbrücke” and near the “Sandfangweg”.
The warmer it gets the more people you will see highly focused on building
their very own work of art. And some of the first tips new people will receive
from more experienced “master builders” are to find a solid (preferably broad)
basis for your “stone man” and to use flat stones rather than those with round
surfaces in order to extend its life span.
The only way to immortalise your “stone man” will be the use of a camera as
no matter how stable and well you have built it, the next too powerful stream or
the next “destructive fish” will bring it down sooner or later.

recent events
Paris, Yemen, the so-called “Islamic State” or Joseph Konys “Christian holy warriors” - in 2015 terror

Rock, Pop, Jazz and more
Insider's tip:
Shy’m in Strasbourg
In France, Shy’m is one of the hottest stars if not the hottest star in
popular music.
Her music may be classified somewhere between pop, dance and
R&B - but first and foremost her
music is very individual. Contrary to
other artists especially singing R&B,
Shy’m’s fan base is not restricted to
one generation - you will find all
ages from 10 to 60 nearly equally
represented at her concerts. And
you will see that only very few are
there as parents - most of the people are coming as fans.
So it does not come as a surprise
that her fifth studio album “Solitaire”, available since autumn 2014,
was certified platinum rapidly.
In spring 2015 she will be on her
second tour through France, on 14th
April 2015 she will be in Strasbourg.

Exhibitions
Exhibitions In Freiburg, Spring 2015:
• until Sunday, 24th May 2015: Kunst auf der Liegewiese
(Art In The Sunbathing Area)
Soon after the last sun beds have been folded up and after the towels have
been wrapped up, the sunbathing area of the Faulerbad was transformed
into an area of culture.
Near the feeder to the A5 Autobahn and only a few steps from the vivid inner city you now can find inspiration since September 2014.
Jörg Siegele, Andrea Hess, Claudia Schroth-Gasde, Ralf Weber, Peter Zimmermann, Vera Peter, Margot Degand, Ronald Dörfler and many other
sculptors present their works and divert you from your routine.
Leave your daily routine and let the artists transport you away - you will be stunned!
• from Saturday, 14th Mar 2015: 30 + 30 retro/perspektiv
In 2015 the Museum of Modern Art in Freiburg celebrates its 30th
anniversary. For this reason the organisers go back to their roots, wellknown works of the period of classical modernism. They asked experts of
different departments to comment and reflect on 30 works of well-known
artists. This resulted in essays, poems, short stories, video works and
other installations, all of which invite those watching it to interact.
There are contributions from departments such as literature, scenography, music, psychology, ethnology and others - and they all use their very
own language and provide thought-provoking impulses. Each contribution
has their own inspiration - some address formal aspects, others focus on
moods or historical, geographical, political or biographical backgrounds.
They ask for relations between artist, work, spectator and visitor and they
deal with different values. Others develop new stories and imaginations
motivated by the works provided. This exhibition, created by the artists
Hösl & Mihaljevic “takes the art off the walls and pedestals”.
So it is up to you to experience the contemporary way to deal with art and
to see how diverse the work of this museum is.
(Museum of Modern Art, until Sunday, 7th June 2015)
Insider's tip:
from Saturday, 9th May 2015:
Un/sichtbar. Women surviving acid.
Photographs by Ann-Christine Woehrl
The Museum for Nature and
Humans shows portrait photos of
women, who all had to suffer a very
distinct borderline experience - physically and mentally: they are all survivors of acid- and fire-attacks.
Those attacks usually are committed out of wounded vanity, a dowry too small, conflicts about land
and alleged “disobedience” towards
the family. Victims not only have to
live with deformed faces, but also
with physical and mental pain.
About most of these girls and
women we never hear or read anything. The photographer Ann-Christine Woehrl visited several victims,
interviewed them with caution about
their story and portrayed them in a
sensible and intense way. The results
are more than just photos, they are
touching portraits.

The Oberkirch Telegraph - Spring 2015
Informationen zum Frühjahr und Sommer 2015 im Oberkirch:
• Restaurant closed on Easter Monday and Whit Monday: As every year
our restaurant will be closed on Easter Monday (6th April) and on Whit
Monday (25th May) - in addition to the fact that our restaurant is closed
every Sunday.
• Ascension Day and Corpus Christi 2015: As in previous years, the minimum stay in our hotel will be three nights during these times (14th to 17th
May and 4th to 7th June 2015) due to the high demand for overnight stays spanning the whole extended weekend.
• ArtBasel 2015: From 18th to 21st June one of the world’s most significant
art fairs will take place in Basle. As for the jewelry fairs mentioned above
we usually are fully booked (often months in advance) for these dates, so
once again you are strongly advised to book as soon as possible if you are
planning to travel to Freiburg during this period of time.
• Freiburger Weinfest 2015: Please take note of the fact that the Wine Festival at the cathedral’s place will take place from 2nd to 7th July 2015 this
year - nearly one week earlier than last year. As in previous years we advise you to book as soon as possible if you are planning to travel to Freiburg during this period of time.
