March Schanachie - Irish American Club

VOLUME 37 ISSUE 6
MARCH 2015
Irish American Club - East Side
2015 Member of the Year
Congratulations to Robin Burton, our 2015 Member of the Year. Robin has been a member for over 20 years, and we
have been the recipients of her varied talents.
Initially she brought her strong sewing and quilting skills to the Thursday night group. Her expertise added new dimensions, and no job was too small for her technical eye. She helped many a novice and veteran to create and finish a challenging pattern.
Robin has always stepped up to do anything that was requested of her. She is a past Executive Board member,
Bereavement Committee member, Cleaning Crew member, and a bartender. She was particularly good as our volunteer Hall
Manager. This job required her to spend many hours at the club. Robin had to make sure all events were ready at the scheduled time and also cleaned up at the end of the event. Her dedication is an inspiration to all who know her.
She was born in Massachusetts and moved to Los Angeles as an infant. After high school she moved to New Mexico
and lived with her Grandmother, who inspired her to follow her dreams. She returned to L.A. and graduated from L.A.
Trade Tech College, where she won awards for her clothing designs. In 1976 she moved to Hawaii with her parents and got
a job designing clothes for the TV show Hawaii 5-0. She met her husband, who was in the Navy at that time, and he brought
her to Cleveland. Robin lives in Willoughby with her current husband John. She has three children, two step children, and
three grandchildren. She is currently employed by Howard Hanna and is also a seamstress for Expressions Bridal and
Formal.
We are proud to give this award to Robin, and we thank her for her countless volunteer hours and commitment to our
club’s success. We thank her for her dedication to our Irish heritage. She embodies the true meaning of the Claddagh:
friendship, loyalty, and love.

“LADIES ONLY” LUNCHEON & RAFFLE –
THE “ROARING 20’s” ARE COMING BACK!
Pat Dowd
Ladies, if you’ve missed our “Ladies Only” luncheon and raffles in the past, this is one you surely won’t want to miss! The
excitement about this year’s theme and the plans we have to
make this day truly special for you, is growing by leaps and
bounds. Yes, we’re bringing back the “Roaring 20’s”, and since
none of us were there to begin with, the resurrection should be
hilarious!
Call your friends, relatives and co-workers now. The date is
Sunday afternoon, April 26th – doors open at 1:00 P.M., luncheon is at 2:00 P.M. and the raffle and drawings begin at 3:00 P.M.
The afternoon is all yours to relax in, enjoy the specialty drinks
of the day, have your picture taken with our special photographer, get your favorite side board numbers, put your Chinese
auction tickets in your favorite bags, win a great prize or cash,
and catch up on the latest from family and friends. You won’t
want the day to end, it goes so fast. We always have loads of
winners, so there are many happy people who spread the word
about this fun day.
I have to tell you – the tickets hadn’t been printed yet and we
already had requests for more than 60 tickets! Since only 200
main board tickets are sold, nearly one-third are spoken for
already. So if you’re coming alone or with a group, you’ll be left
out if you don’t order your tickets now.
Tickets are $40 per person and include a delicious hot luncheon, open bar with specialty drinks, the opportunity to win
$1500 in cash, the chance to purchase side board tickets and
tickets for the many silent auction packages that are sure to interest you.
We ask that you order your tickets from the Padraic Pearse
Center officers and associates shown here: Donna Jones, Kevin
McCluskey, Bonnie Easton, Amy Bopp, Thomasine Barner,
Eileen Garin, Peggy Bennett, Bonnie McNally, Pam Splittorf,
Marie Cicconetti and Pat Dowd. My phone number is 440-3547012 and I will be glad to direct you to the people who have your
“lucky number” tickets. Mary Terese Hurley will coordinate
seating arrangements once all tickets are sold, but please order
your tickets from the Padraic Pearse Center committee. Thanks
so much – we can’t wait for this extra-special day!
Please join us for book discussion in the Phil Walsh
Cabaret Room on Friday, April 24th at 7:15 P.M. Pick up
the book "The Secret Place" by Tana French, ranked as the
#1 fiction book of the year by Time Magazine. We would
love to have your input for a lively discussion.
In the month of March, the month in which the Irish celebrate the life of Saint Patrick, you might attempt to break
out of your comfort zone by trying something new. Are you
hooked on cozy mysteries? Try a hard-boiled, noir detective
story. If you read only techy Sci-Fi, pick up a historical
romance. Be adventurous.
Reading suggestions for this month:
"Now and in the Hour of Our Death" was written by
Patrick Taylor, who also wrote the Irish Country stories (Dr.
O'Reilly series) that you may be familiar with. Here, he
takes on the Troubles of the 1980s in Belfast. Two lovers
are separated when Davy is imprisoned for being a bomber
for the Provisional IRA while Fiona makes a new life in
Vancouver, British Columbia as a vice principal of an elementary school. Both are left with painful memories of their
past.
Stuart Neville also places his novels in Belfast. The
fourth in his series is "The Final Silence." A niece of an
influential politician finds a locked room in his house that
she inherited after his death. The locked room contains a
leather-bound book containing locks of hair and fingernails
as a grisly catalog of victims. She hires a disgraced police
detective to investigate. Other titles in the Belfast series are
"Stolen Souls," "The Ghosts of Belfast," and "Collusion."
The Fever series by Karen Marie Moning takes place in
Dublin. After the older sister of college student Mackayla
Lane is murdered in Ireland, Mac flies to Dublin and enters
the supernatural, seductive world of the Fae. The books in
her popular series are "Darkfever," "Bloodfever,"
"Faefever," "Dreamfever," "Shadowfever," "Iced," and
"Burned."

CLUB TRIPS
Pat Dowd
If you’re still thinking about joining us on a Club trip this
year, don’t wait any longer. The trip to New
Orleans/Nashville sold out in approximately one hour at the
Club’s Anniversary Dance in January!
The trip to Mackinac and Soaring Eagle still has seats
available as of this writing, but I expect this trip to be filled
too.
The word has definitely spread on how much fun we have
on our Club trips. As I tell our travelers each year, it’s not
necessarily where we go - it’s the group we’re with that really makes our travels so special. And each year we add more
fun-loving people to our groups. So don’t hesitate any
longer. Send in your reservation for Mackinac now. Any
questions, please call me at 440-354-7012.
HERE’S A TRIP YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS!
Yes, it’s one that has been popular year after year, and keeps bringing tourists back for more, but it will be our Club’s
first trip to Mackinac Island and Mackinaw City, Michigan, so we hope you’ll be joining us for 5 days and 4 nights, June
28 – July 2.
Mackinac Island is only 3 miles long and 2 miles wide, and is reached by boat from St. Ignace or Mackinaw City, so just
getting there is fun. Once on the island, no motor vehicles are allowed – transportation is by horse-drawn carriage, bicycle or saddle horse – more fun!
Your trip will include deluxe DVD/WIFI motorcoach transportation, 4 nights’ hotel accommodations – 3 nights in
Mackinaw City and 1 night in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan at the Soaring Eagle Resort, three breakfasts, 1 lunch at the famous
Grand Hotel, 3 dinners, roundtrip ferry tickets to Mackinac Island, Mackinac Island Carriage Tour, Old Mission Point
Lighthouse, Fort Mackinac, Historic Mill Creek, Fort Michilimackinac, Mackinac Art Museum, Soaring Eagle Casino
bonus - $30 premium play & $20 dining gift card, all applicable taxes, meal gratuities and baggage handling.
Complete the Reservation Form below to make sure you’re not left out. Reservations will be filled on a first-come basis.
A deposit of $60 and 4 monthly payments of $125 each from February through May are all you need. Trip cost is $560 per
person based on double occupancy. Single, triple and quad occupancy are available.

37th Anniversary Dance
by Linda Carney & Committee
Thanks to all who attended the annual Anniversary Dance
January 17th. The hall looked beautiful, the music was great
and the crowd even better. We were treated to a delightful
specialty drink station that included Baileys and coffee and
Baileys and hot chocolate. There was also a make your own
smores station- courtesy of Katy Profeta, and it was a big
hit! Meg Reese did a fantastic job on the evening’s appetizer selections and elegant presentation. Mary’s Lane entertained the crowd all evening and had the dance floor filled.
Thanks to all that attended and special thanks to the committee: Meg Reese, Kevin McCluskey, Katy Profeta, Linnea
Meaney, Bill Carney, Bonnie McNally, Mickey McNally,
Mary Alice Fitzgerald, Chris Harris, Sarah Dirk, Patty
Campbell, and Pat Dowd.

Talent Show
Plans are in the works for a talent show for club members, of all ages, to show off their talents. Tentatively looking at the end of May or beginning of June. If you can sing,
dance, play an instrument, have a joke, or are in a band. Or
if you have another talent you want to show off, this event
is for you. Once the committee is fully formed, there will be
an audition date set. This will probably be at the end of
March. We will then set rehearsals in preparation for the
show. This is new ground so be patient, as things will
change as we go, LOL. For more information, contact Gary
Smrdel @ 440-655-7592.

MARCH 2015
Notes from the Treasurer Help the IACES during our important
Green Season
Volunteer help is needed during our March Green Season.
Any effort (large or small) is really appreciated. Major
efforts in March include selling tickets, counting funds and
counting tickets.
Those wanting to help the club by selling tickets at
events, please contact LINDA WALSH. She has a complete
list of dates and times. This is a fun task and a great way to
meet members and enjoy the events.
Our current Counting Team meets weekly and welcomes
help and new folks. During March the team will expand to
also count drink tickets. Every Wednesday afternoon during
March we can use a few members to help count the tickets
from the previous week. Please contact MIKE GRONICK
if you want to help us count tickets.
Light office help is also needed. If you have a flair for
organizing and filing, then your efforts will be appreciated.
Friday is filing day. So if you have time stop at the club
Friday afternoon and help us get organized. Then down to
the Pub for drinks and music. Please contact me if you can
help.
March is a great time for the Club and the Members.
Please help in making it a success for everyone.
Thanks!

A Time for Celebration!
Tis THE Season… for joy, friendship, laughter, and a
celebration of our heritage. The songs, music, sounds of
bagpipes, and hard shoes on the dance floor allow us a time
to be unified and proud. We look forward to this season all
year long.
The Cleveland Ceili Club – East Side Division, keeps this
spirit alive throughout the year. We welcome you to come
out to the IACES on Wednesday nights to learn some of the
traditional social dances of Ireland. We meet 7 – 9 P.M.
downstairs at the club and teach simple social dances to
adults who would like to learn. All are welcome.
We’re especially looking forward to Irish Coffee Night,
and a night of music and dance with The Portersharks! They
are a fabulous group of traditional musicians that will make
this a night to remember! We’re planning to tear up the floor
with some set and ceili dancing – and would love to teach
you a few steps so you can join us.
Contact [email protected] for more information.

President’s Letter
As we all know, St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland
and Cleveland Irish have been publicly celebrating his feast
day since 1867. We were not the first Irish folk to have such
a celebration. In 1607 St. Patrick’s Feast Day was first listed on the Irish legal calendar. That began a historical relationship between the Irish people and March 17th.
In 1631 Pope Urban VII officially added the Feast of St.
Patrick to the calendar of the Catholic Church. Pope
Innocent XI raised the Feast Day of St. Patrick to the rank
of a double rite in 1687, thereby augmenting its liturgical
importance. The religious observation was followed with
dance, music, food, drink and sport. The Church hierarchy
supported these festivals which could last three days. The
Feast of St. Patrick was an established day of celebration for
the Irish people by the end of the 17th century.
In 1695, following the victory of William of Orange, the
British Parliament banned the majority of the Catholic
Saints’ Days, among them St. Patrick’s Day. That did not
eliminate the veneration of Ireland’s patron saint, who was
now becoming the symbolic figure of Irish identity and Irish
nationalism in response to British oppression. Celebration
of the feast, although unsanctioned, became more public.
The 18th century celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day illustrate the transformation of St. Patrick to a national figure for
Irish nationalism. Irish Protestants began to celebrate the
Catholic Feast Day. March 17th re-affirmed an Irish identity. The Rebellion of 1798 was an expression of Irish nationalism and identity.
The retaliation for the Rebellion was the Act of Union in
1801. It abolished the Irish Parliament and denied Irish
Catholics liberty. St. Patrick and his feast day became a part
of the battle for Irish identity. The Anglican Church of
Ireland attempted to adopt the patron saint, while the Irish
Catholic Church fought to maintain their connection to the
saint. Irish societies of both faiths held dinners on March
17th. This separate veneration continued in the years preceding the Famine.
During the Great Hunger, over a million died in Ireland
and just as many emigrated. In the face of death and disease, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations ceased for the majority
of the Irish people. The Famine Irish who crossed the
Atlantic to America found that St. Patrick’s Day events had
begun here as early as 1737.
It was not until 1775 that the first public procession
occurred in America on St. Patrick’s Day. The Sons of St.
Patrick, Irish officers in the 47th regiment of the British
Army stationed in Boston, marched to Mass after dinner. A
year later the British Army was fleeing Boston and the threat
of the Continental Army, under the leadership of General
John Sullivan, an Irish American. In Boston, March 17th is
both St. Patrick’s Day and Evacuation Day.
In 1827 the British government lifted the emigration
restriction for Ireland and Irish citizens, largely Catholic,
began to flock to America. The Charitable Society of
Boston, who in 1727 restricted membership to Protestants,
became dominated by Catholics who petitioned the Diocese
of Boston, formed in 1808, to sanction a public procession
and a formal dinner in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Irish
Catholic immigrants re-established historic organizations in
the American context which began to administer St.
Patrick’s Day festivities across America.
Although there were eight St. Patrick’s Day celebrations
pre-dating the Famine years, the 1840’s witnessed more
public parades in America. As in Ireland, March 17th was
celebrated in different forms based on the social status of
participants. But it was the St. Patrick’s Day Parade that
allowed all segments of Irish America to share their commonality. By 1870 there were seventeen St. Patrick’s Day
Parades in America, including one in Cleveland established
in 1867.
It was 260 years from recognition on the Irish legal calendar to the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Cleveland.
March 17th still is the feast day of St. Patrick, an observed
religious day that begins in the pews. It is a day for each of
you to celebrate. To celebrate your Irishness. To celebrate
this Club. I invite you to join your brethren in the many and
varied activities the Club offers during the month of March.

The Irish American Club is available for rentals of all
sizes. We can accommodate showers, graduations, banquets,
receptions of all kinds, and, of course weddings. We have
two facilities available, the Upper Hall for larger parties and
the Phil Walsh Cabaret Room. To reserve either the Upper
Hall or the Phil Walsh Cabaret room for a rental, please call
Rick Eberhard 216-338-3774 or Joe Capuozzo 216-3760599. Koumboro’s is the exclusive caterer for the Upper
hall. However, they are also available for the Cabaret Room.
You may bring in your own food or your own caterer for the
Lower hall.
After Funeral Luncheon
In the event of the loss of a loved one, the Upper hall
is available for after Funeral Luncheons. For a nominal
donation we will provide all set-up which includes tablecloths on all tables, buffet tables, coffee/tea service,
servers and bartenders.
The servers will be the members of our Bereavement
Committee.
If you choose to serve pop, beer, wine or liquor, there
is an additional charge.
If you need to reserve the hall for a funeral luncheon,
please call Rick Eberhard: 216-338-3774 or Joe
Capuozzo: 2l6-376-0599. They will notify the
Bereavement Committee of your needs. They are available to cater the luncheon for you or you may bring your
own food or select your own caterer for a funeral luncheon. At the end of your function we will pack up any
remaining food and help you transfer it to your car.
We hope you will consider this outstanding service we
provide to our members.
