Keynote Presentation
Dr. Maria R. Shirey, assistant dean and professor in
the School of Nursing at The University of Alabama at
Birmingham (UAB), teaches primarily in the Doctor of
Nursing Practice (DNP) program, focusing on leadership,
management, health policy and scholarly writing.
A previous nurse executive with over 30 years of experience,
Dr. Shirey is a champion for healthy work environments that
enhance the ability of healthcare professionals to provide
safe, quality patient care while personally growing, thriving
and remaining engaged within the discipline. Prior to joining the UAB faculty in 2013,
Dr. Shirey taught in the DNP program at the University of Southern Indiana. Dr. Shirey’s
practice expertise is in executive nursing leadership. Her research focuses on nurse
manager work complexity to provide a better understanding of the nurse manager
role and its unique contributions to healthcare systems. Dr. Shirey’s scholarly work has
been used to affect workforce policy at the state and national levels. Her research to
explain the relationship between authentic leadership and the practice environment
of nurses is considered a seminal contribution to the nursing literature. Dr. Shirey
received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Florida State University, a Master
of Science in Nursing from Texas Woman’s University, a Master of Business
Administration from Tulane University, and a PhD in Nursing Science from Indiana
University. Her experience includes roles as staff nurse, clinical nurse specialist,
academic faculty, nurse manager, nursing director, hospital vice-president, clinic
administrator and entrepreneur.

The Program
Designed to explore how research and
evidence-based practices can be utilized to
improve patient care and healthcare
systems, this conference will include paper
and poster presentations as well as foster
networking among professionals who are
interested in promoting quality patient care.
The purpose of this program is to prepare
health professionals to implement effective
research and evidence-based healthcare
strategies and practices in their individual
professional practice and their organization.
Objectives
• Discuss how research, evidencebased practice, and performance
improvement can be utilized to
improve patient care outcomes, and
positively impact the delivery of
healthcare services.

registering by April 1; thereafter, $120,

for graduate students. (Includes lunch for

Conference Materials: The day before the
conference, registrants will be emailed
a link to a web site where the conference
materials, including handouts, and
agenda, may be accessed and printed.
No hard copy of handouts will be
provided. Please ensure that you provide
a correct, individual email address when
registering.
Conference Mobile App: Participants
with an iOS or Android phone or tablet
will be able to access the free conference
mobile App. Information about how
to access the App will be emailed to
registrants the day before the conference.
Participants are encouraged to download
and become familiar with the App prior to
the conference.
Certificate of Completion: Following the
conference, attendees must complete
the online evaluation and attest to their
attendance at the conference in order to
receive an emailed certificate in four to
six weeks.
Refund Policy: Registration fees are
refundable, less a $15 service charge,
until April 14, 2015. No refunds will be
made after that date.
Location of Conference: The conference
will be held in Carter Hall of the University
Center on the campus of the University of
Southern Indiana, Evansville, Indiana. USI
is located on Highway 62, approximately
two miles west of Evansville.
Hotel Accommodations: The closest
airport is Evansville Regional Airport
(EVV) and is approximately 30 minutes
from campus. Hotels in close proximity
to the campus are Fairfield Inn West
