Incredible Purim Spiel, challenging games, thrilling prizes, great food and fun for all! www.oaklandsinai.org FROM THE RABBI’S CANTOR’S DESK DESK Superman - Batman - Stupendous Man… Have you ever noticed that so many superheroes in popular culture have two basic things they share in common? They are mostly male, and they need a mask or a costume to do their work. Think of Clark Kent changing in a phone booth, or the pointy mask hiding Bruce Wayne’s identity — something about the costume or the altar-ego allows these ‘ordinary men’ to transform into superheroes, even though they mostly possess the same powers or strength with or without the costume. Though many of us may dress up like those new superheroes on Purim, we do it because the story of the holiday begins and ends with great scenes of majestic masquerade balls in the palace of King Ahasuerus. But the story of this holiday is really about one of the earliest and greatest heroes in our tradition: Queen Esther. The ancient rabbis often focus and highlighted two aspects of Esther’s character in the story — her beauty and wit — but they do not emphasize her cunning wisdom, or her extraordinary bravery under pressure. Like so many modern day superheroes, Esther didn’t seek out those powers, but when her people were in danger she discovered that these powers and strengths had always been inside her. That is why Queen Esther’s example is so admirable — she rose to the challenge when she found herself in the right place and time to save her people. The ancient rabbis were not wrong to highlight her innate gifts of beauty and charm, but they sometimes minimized the pivotal role she played by exposing Haman as a true villain, and saving the Jewish people from persecution. In the strict court of the Persian king, Esther’s actions were just as dramatic as flying fast as a bullet, or taking to the streets to rid the city of crime. We may never be able to outrun a speeding train, but we can certainly take action to bring relief and comfort to those in need, and work together towards building a more just world. Even more than the fantastic exploits of superheroes in print and film, Queen Esther’s actions should be a shining and compelling example of the way each one of us can make a true and lasting impact in the world. Our time for heroism begins when our costumes come off. ~ Rabbi Yoni Regev Purim Traditions Purim is a joyous holiday commemorating the rescue of the Jews of Persia by Queen Esther and her uncle Mordecai from the evil Haman. The story is read aloud and when Haman is mentioned in the Megillah (scroll) of Esther, people scream and turn noisemakers called “groggers” to drown out his name. Traditions include parties, dances, putting on plays (spiels), mishloach manot (gift-giving), and eating Hamentaschen (three-cornered, fruit-filled pastries). An oft-repeated Jewish saying is that the theme of many Jewish holidays is: “They tried to kill us. We survived. Now let’s eat!” While 15th century Italian Jews celebrated Purim with donut-like confections called Haman’s Ears or Orecchi di Aman, Israelis similarly refer to the familiar, triangular, filled Purim cookie as ‘ears’ or Oznei Haman. Slightly more appetizing, and decidedly less cannibalistic, is to say that we eat Hamentaschen or Haman’s Hats to remind us that Haman wanted the good Jewish citizenry of Shushan to either bow down to him or be done away with. Even more tasty than baking Hamentaschen and discovering (or creating) filling options is the mitzvah of Mishloach Manot – or ‘giving portions’. Fill a small basket with freshly baked Hamentaschen to give to friends, family and neighbors. Take the sharing one step further with a donation of groceries to a food bank in honor of Purim. Under the guidance of Rabbi Mates-Muchin, qualified Committee members will be matched with mourners to provide congregantto-congregant caring support, helping them navigate the difficult weeks and months following a loss. This new group is, in a sense, a complement to the work of our Caring Community and Chevrah Kadisha groups. The CC contributes food for shiva minyanim (among many types of practical assistance), while the CK works primarily with the ritual of preparing the deceased for burial. The Nechamah Committee will add to, rather than replace, the pastoral work our clergy do, giving an additional dimension to that enterprise. The idea for this activity was suggested to the clergy by Dan Fendel, as an outgrowth of his study with the Gamliel Institute, and began to take shape last spring. Lisa Katzman chairs the group, with Dan and Rabbi Mates-Muchin, and they have recruited a small initial group of volunteers, all of whom have experience with this type of work. The group has met to develop a system for action, including a session with the leader of a similar group at Congregation Netivot Shalom (Conservative) in Berkeley. Rabbi MatesMuchin will pair comforters with mourners, with each pair developing its own appropriate style of interaction. The Committee will provide ongoing support and guidance for its members as the process goes forward. For more information, contact Dan Fendel at [email protected]. In this year of Shmitta, a period called for in the Torah that comes every seven years, we are told “… the land shall have a complete rest, a Sabbath to the Eternal,” and to allow our land to lie fallow. During this time, we all have an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the land and what it brings us. Our Living Room Gallery (across from the Temple’s administrative office) will be graced by the talent of two long-time congregants, Carol Sideman and David Hardy. Both Carol and David use paint, their preferred medium of artistic expression, to convey the beauty of the greenery that surrounds us, and the miracle of the blossoms we see this time of year. On your comings and goings to the synagogue, we invite you to stop by and “smell the flowers” featured in their paintings. A special afternoon dessert reception will be held Sunday, March 22nd at 2:00pm in the Living Room Gallery; all are welcome to attend. He’s part of the team undertaking a long overdue overhaul of our technology infrastructure. When the call went out for Technology Task Force volunteers, his wife Sharon Drager nominated him. “Wyit and I feel that Temple Sinai is an important part of our lives and would welcome the opportunity to be of service.” It has been a terrific match. Wyit says that the technology issues facing our congregation are common for organizations of our size and ones that he deals with regularly. Wyit’s company provides technology support for businesses that need an Information Technology department but are too small to afford a full time person. His work requires him to be on the road much of time, often in Arkansas where he lived for many years. As he says, “I have always liked fixing things and now I get paid to do it!” The Temple Sinai Technology Task Force set to work in August with a comprehensive analysis of current technology uses, desired uses and pain points for members and staff. An inventory of computer infrastructure showed that our existing tools are an obstacle to providing a better member experience — an online member directory, online membership renewal, and online bill payment, for example. The Task Force recommended replacing outdated hardware and obsolete software with cloud-based membership, financial, and office management systems. Work is now underway. Wyit became a Temple Sinai member in 2007 when he married long-time congregant Sharon Drager. When Rabbi Mates-Muchin officiated at their wedding, Wyit joined a family with strong ties to the community: Bar and Bat Mitzvahs (Sharon’s children Troy and Brooke), weddings (Troy married Rachel in 2012), and baby namings (granddaughter Sara arrived last summer). According to Wyit, “It is exciting to work on this and it will be exciting for members to see the improvements we are making. The relationships that I am building with team and staff members make the Temple Sinai experience all the richer for me.” Other Task Force members are Robert Einspruch, Ben Galison, Tom McCleary, Larry Stone and Chair Joan Waranoff. “Temple Sinai isn’t just a place, it’s a wonderfully diverse and welcoming community and volunteer work helps that community flourish.” SEE A FILM. Germany/Israel/United Kingdom, 2014, 99 minutes, Hebrew/Arabic/subtitles. Winner of Sundance’s Audience Award, The Green Prince is a riveting documentary about one of Israel’s most important intelligence sources. After 17-year-old Mosab Hassan Yousef rejects Hamas’ use of suicide bombers, he agrees to spy for the Shin Bet, Israel’s security service. This tale of intrigue and betrayal is based on Yousef ’s memoir in which he describes his coming-to-terms with working with the Shin Bet and his own family history—his father having been a founding member of Hamas. “As gripping as any high concept Hollywood thriller and as psychologically knotty as Greek tragedy” – Guardian. In January, we had our first joint meeting of the education and preschool parent committees. This meeting came about with the support of our lay leaders Jen Alderman and Eti Valdez-Kaminsky, the chairs of the Education Committee, and Linsey Morrison, Preschool Parent Committee President. The main goal of the evening was to bring people together to talk about how we, as a collaborative parent committee, create a feeling of one community and a consistent experience for children and families at Temple Sinai from preschool through religious school and beyond. We have often heard that preschool families feel a loss of connection once they leave the preschool and new families who join religious school struggle to find a connection in the small windows of time they are physically at Temple Sinai. From this discussion, we developed four action items which are already in the works. First, we want to deepen the way in which we welcome people at all of our programs and events. Beginning with our lay leaders, we are asking folks to be “hosts” who greet and schmooze with people in the hopes of making new and deeper connections. Secondly, in all of our programs we do a number of social action projects throughout the year. Some of those projects do connect with the Social Action Committee of the synagogue, but we want to be more thoughtful about connecting more of these initiatives not only to make a greater impact but to also build bridges between the schools and families and greater synagogue community. Our last two action items are about connecting children to each other. We discussed the possibility of setting up a buddy system between older and younger children during community events in the religious school and also connecting families with our middle and high school students who are interested in baby-sitting. And Michele Quiat, our Youth Director, has already set up a day for teens to get their CPR/Baby-sitting certification. If you are interested in getting your own teen on the list or are in need of a baby-sitter, you can be in touch with Michele to give you the names of teens in our synagogue community. As an Education Department, this meeting was a wonderful next step in furthering the work of integration, creating more opportunities for collaboration, and thinking more deeply about building meaningful connections for children and families. We are so appreciative of the work and commitment of our education lay leaders and look forward for more to come! -Ellen Lefkowitz, Preschool Director 12 n Temple Sinai n March 2015 Tu B’Shevat february 1, 2015 Photos by Amy Jo Goldfarb Join the fun at TSP’s second annual Spring Fundraiser at the Lawrence Hall of Science! bring the family and explore with friends in our own Bubbleology and Gravity & Motion workshops.
