We had a great turnout at the annual Holiday Open House again this year. I would like to thank everyone
who supported us by contributing to the party...RLC Landscaping, Ed Jones Insurance Agency, TruGreen,
Attorney Robert Taylor, Kim-Co Insurance, Terri Misek with Keller Williams Heritage Realty, Publix
Supermarkets (both Apopka & Sweetwater), Subway, and Home Depot in Altamonte Springs. Our sincere
thanks….We couldn’t have it without you.
We are in preparation for the Annual Membership Meeting. This year’s meeting will be held on April 23, 2015
at 7:00 p.m. at the Golf Academy. This is the year with no election of directors. Mark your calendars and watch your mail for
the “Meeting” packets around the end of March. We hope to see all of you there.
We had a great 2014! We planted 380 Podocarpus and 4 Red Maples down Hunt Club Blvd, replaced the swing set at
Duncan Park, and re-landscaped several cul-de-sac islands to name a few. We are planning for 2015 to be just as productive!
Happy Valentine’s Day, Wekiva!
Living with Coyotes
Coyotes are found throughout Florida, and yes, they
are here in Wekiva. They resemble a small German
shepherd, and typically weigh between 15-30 pounds.
They have pointed ears, and narrow muzzle and a
bushy tail. In 1981, they were reported in 18 of Florida’s 67 counties. Today, they are present in all 67
counties.
Coyotes remain active year round. Coyotes do play an
important role in the ecosystem by helping to keep rodent populations under control.
Keep Your Pets Safe
Coyotes can and do prey on domestic cats and small dogs. To protect your pets, don’t allow
them to roam freely. Most coyote attacks on pets occur either at night or at dusk or dawn.
During these times especially, be careful if you’re walking your pet in wooded areas or in
heavily foliaged areas where coyotes could hide. Keep your dog close, on a short leash.
Keep cats indoors. When cats wander freely, there’s an increased risk of them being attacked
by coyotes. Coyotes are attracted by garbage. Problems can be significantly reduced if residents remove attractants and secure trash.
The locks at the tennis courts
will be changed on
March 4, 2015.
New keys will be available
starting Thursday, February
19, 2015. Please
stop by the office
to pick up your
new key! Not a
tennis member
and want to be—it’s easy—
stop by the office, fill out a
form, pay the annual fee of
$50 and get a key.
TIPS & FACTS
 NEVER feed coyotes!
 Frighten them away by making loud noises & acting aggressively, such as waving your arms in the air.
 Close off crawl spaces under porches and sheds.
 Do not run from a coyote
 When walking your pet, carry something that will make noise or scare the animal (small air horn, solid walking stick) or
make a “coyote shaker” by putting a few washers, pebbles or pennies into an empty soft drink can & taping it shut.
 Removing coyotes from one area can result in other coyotes moving in from surrounding areas and producing more pups
per litter.
For more information, visit www.myfwc.com.

Hello everyone and happy 2015! My name
is Deputy Theresa Brodersen. A couple of
months ago, I had the pleasure of being
added as a new member of the Wekiva team
that patrols in an off duty capacity. I have
thirty one years of experience with the
Seminole County Sheriff’s Office and am
Deputy
Theresa Brodersen currently assigned to patrol in this same
area.
I would like to share with you a free and private social
network site for neighborhoods called Nextdoor.com. Currently,
one in four neighborhoods across the United States is using
Nextdoor.com. This site allows neighbors the opportunity to
create a trusted, private neighborhood website where they can
interact by asking questions, exchange local advice, make
recommendations, and discuss their community concerns. All
Nextdoor.com members are verified residents of their
neighborhood. Nextdoor.com is a new tool for the Seminole
County Sheriff’s office to share crime trends and safety
information with specific neighborhoods, groups of
neighborhoods, or the entire county. Information on each
neighborhood’s site cannot be accessed by the Sheriff’s office.
Currently, over 135 public safety agencies are using
Nextdoor.com and 40% of the posts by residents on
Nextdoor.com concern community or public safety issues.
Some neighborhoods are using this social media site as a
virtual Neighborhood Watch Program. If you or your
neighborhood is not currently signed up we encourage you to
learn more and register at www.nextdoor.com.
While I am discussing social media, If you haven’t
checked out the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office Facebook
page, you’re missing out! More than 8,500 followers are
checking out the Sheriff’s Office daily posts which include
everything from Alert videos of apprehensions, to members
receiving recognition, to crime prevention and safety tips.
Not a Facebook user? You don’t need to be. Anyone
can see the Sheriff’s Office page by going
to www.Facebook.com/seminolesheriff.
If you are a Facebook user, please “like” our page so
you’ll get our posts in your news feed. Don’t worry – the
Sheriff’s Office can’t see any of your personal pages (unless
your settings make it public). As a government/business page,
we can see who our followers are, but not any of their
content. And if you’re a Facebook super user, consider helping
out the Sheriff’s Office by inviting your friends to follow us too!
I look forward to seeing everyone in the community as I conduct
my patrols.
Please remember to notify the Association office in writing if your mailing address changes.
The Association makes many mailings to its members throughout the year and will use the
address on record unless notified otherwise.
