President’s Report – Les Burnard
The turnout at the Ronnie Davel and Kearsney 21 has been exceptional this
year which is very encouraging for road running when one considers the
number of off road events on the calendar. A very good start to 2015 indeed.

New members must complete a Collegians Harriers
membership form and a Collegians Club membership form.
A new member who was a member of another club in 2014
will require a Clearance Certificate from their previous club.
Please note that licensed runners must ensure that they
are registered on the ASA database on
www.asa.saclubs.co.za
Should you not have internet access then complete the ASA
registration form and the club will register you.
On 15 March we will be hosting the Umgeni Water Marathon together with
Howick Athletic club and we hope that those members who have very kindly
assisted us with the event in the past will be available once again this year.
Please contact Sharne Petherbridge to offer your services. Your committee
has decided to make the event pre-entry which will make it somewhat easier
to organise the event when the number of entrants is known beforehand. The
on-line entry link can be found on our website and for those who wish to do a
manual entry please note that entries will be taken at the clubhouse on 28
February and that Poobie Naidoo Sports will have an Umgeni Water entry box
in their store. The closing date for all entries is 28 February.
On 6 December last year the Bill Butler Memorial fun event was held followed
by the annual Prize Giving. Pam Shuttleworth, a walker, was the winner out of
the sixteen participants and she completed the 10 kilometres course 52
seconds over 6 pm. Great fun was had by all and there was a lot of banter
“you’re running too fast” or “you’re walking too slowly” in an attempt to confuse
people with the pace they were running or walking.
There was a fair turnout of members at the Prize Giving and those who
attended were treated to a fabulous meal supplied by Collegians Club. Sarah
Gray and Muzi Madikwa achieved the highest points in the club’s
championship log and were therefore the deserved winners in their respective
categories for 2014. Congratulations to all those who received an award at the
prize giving.
On 11 December 2014, Piet van der Leeuw, an honorary life member of the
club passed away at the age of 83. Piet held numerous track records in his
day and also completed 11 Comrades. Our condolences to his family.
Collegians Harriers was once again the recipient of the Ronnie Davel Most
Entrants floating trophy in 2015. The recipient of the trophy is required to
collect money for a worthy cause and each year the challenge for the new
recipient is to better the previous winner’s donation. We donated R250 to the
SPCA in 2014 and this year we need to better that amount. Please support
this worthy cause by putting your change in the SPCA tin at the club.
All licensed athletes are required to be registered on the ASA website as from
2013. Existing members of the club should therefore already be registered as

a Collegians Harriers and the club administrator, David Siepman, will in due
course capture your 2015 ASA number on the system. New members are
required to log onto the ASA website http://asa.saclubs.co.za to register or if
you were a member of another you would need to record that you have
transferred.
See you on the road……..

Road Captain’s report – Clive Willows
Welcome to the New Year. I am not a great believer in New Year’s
resolutions. It is possible, on any day, to resolve to accomplish a particular
goal. The important point to remember is not to wait for some expected
mystical motivation to jolt you into action. Decide today – put in some effort
and the motivation will come later.
It is a common mistake to set only lofty goals for the distant future – that is a
sure road to discouragement. Rather, keep the vision in the short term (but
hold onto the dream), walk before you run. Achieving smaller goals will keep
the momentum of your motivation.
To achieve goals in road running it is best to adhere to this order of focus –
Form, Distance, Speed.
Try to concentrate on a comfortable running style that allows for smooth and
efficient movement. This needs to become a natural process that happens
without concentration and contributes to an enjoyable and mentally relaxing
activity.
Once this is perfected, the next focus is on distance – or rather, running for
longer periods of time rather than calculating kilometers. Try to maintain a
comfortable and consistent pace. Your style and slow but steady increase in
time on your legs prepares the body for greater strains and demands, with
less risk of over training and injury.
With these two goals achieved only now is the time to increase speed – over
shorter distances (such as a measured time trial). The extra pace, faster than
the pace of a longer race, will build strength and endurance in muscles and
improve cardio-vascular capacity.
This is a sport that demands patience – and many have suffered frustration
through adopting a reckless, impatient and impulsive approach.
The year ended with Comrades runners developing a “base” for their more
demanding training efforts as the new year unfolds. Wasn’t it convenient to
have a popular song to reinforce this message? I had the words “I’m all about
the base” going round and round in my head. (Or did I misunderstand?)
The race calendar ahead offers many options with increasing distances as the
weeks slip by. Races are useful benchmarks but sometimes can interfere with
5
training. Any concerted effort requires a period of rest beforehand and
recovery thereafter.
It’s useful to avoid the temptation of racing too often. Races should be chosen
carefully to contribute positively toward an overall longer term goal, or,
become a goal in themselves – but not both.
For Comrades entrants we will again be planning to organize a Route Tester,
from Hillcrest to Collegians, covering 56km of the route. A most likely date is
19 April, six weeks before the actual race. This is a helpful event – particularly
for novice runners.
Details will follow.
I wish you good fortune in realizing your goals this year. There are many wise
and experienced runners in the club so please don’t hesitate to ask for advice.
Let us all wear our colours with pride and set a good example on the road as
respectful, considerate and appreciative runners. Even if you don’t run good
times, have a good time running.

collaborate to lodge their deeds in the deeds office
simultaneously.
The deeds office takes approximately 7-10 working days to
examine the deeds prior to registration.
On date of registration the purchaser becomes the registered
owner of the property. The transferring attorney coordinates all
payments to be finalised between parties concerned.
The title deed is released to the transferring attorney by the deeds
office at a later date which is sent to purchaser/purchaser’s bank
for safekeeping.
This is a summarised overview of a conveyancing process. Should
you have any questions about the process, or any other
conveyancing queries, please feel free to email us on

I have just sold my house, now what?
Many clients have come to us after selling or buying a house wanting to know
"what's next?" Here is a brief summary of the conveyancing process which
will help all buyers and sellers understand the steps taken to pass ownership:
•
•
The agreement of sale is signed by the seller and the purchaser
and handed to the transferring conveyancer to attend to
registration of transfer.
The conveyancer will request various information from the seller
and the purchaser to finalise the transfer documents and comply
with the FICA requirements. On receipt of the necessary
documents and information, the conveyancer will then:
•
•
•
Apply to the seller’s bank for cancellation figures to settle
the sellers existing mortgage bond and request the
original title deed.
Apply to the municipality for a rates statement with a view
to obtaining a rates clearance certificate. In the case of a
sectional title property the conveyancer will apply to the
body corporate or managing agent for figures to obtain a
levy clearance certificate.
Draft transfer documents which the parties will be
requested to sign and arrange for payment by the
purchaser of the pro-forma invoice (covering transfer
costs, transfer duty, a pro-rata estimate of the rates due
on the property and the deeds office registration fees).
Apply for the Transfer Duty Receipt from SARS
pay the rates statement and obtain the rates clearance
certificate;
Obtain the Electrical Compliance and Pest Clearance
certificates (as per the sale agreement).
The bond conveyancers will draft the bond documents and
arrange for signature of these by the purchaser, so that the
required guarantees can be issued to cancel any existing bonds
and/or cover purchase price of the property.
On receipt of the guarantee the cancellation attorneys will prepare
a consent to cancellation which will be lodged simultaneously with
the transfer deeds, and the purchaser's new bond.
Once all the transfer, bond and cancellation documents have
been signed, certificates have been issued and costs paid, the
transferring attorneys, cancellation attorneys and bond attorneys

Should dogs be allowed to run off-leash on trails
Christie Aschwanden
YES
Rachel Walker
Boulder, Colorado
Mandatory leash laws may be the simplest solution to out-of-control dogs, but
that doesn't make them the best. The rules are punitive to people who've
invested time and money to train their dog. I've taught my Australian
shepherd, Chloe, not to chase other dogs or wildlife. It goes without saying
that dogs need to be in control, but leashes don't necessarily accomplish that.
Chloe is actually more obedient off-leash. Some dogs are more aggressive or
more likely to pull on a leash, and leashes can be dangerous—they can trip
you or get wrapped around your legs. My dog isn't naturally inclined to run
steady for five miles; she likes to run and stop and run and stop. Having her
off-leash lets her go at her preferred pace. But there's something bigger than
that. When she's running free, it gives us both a chance to share and relish
this activity that we both love.
NO
Chris Villanueva
Monterey, California
My Australian shepherd/Lab mix, Riley, is on-leash 100 percent of the time
when we run. I use a 14-foot retractable leash, which gives him plenty of
roaming space, but I can control where and how far he goes. It's partly for his
own safety: We often run on dirt trails, and keeping him on-leash minimizes
his exposure to ticks and poison oak. And I don't believe any dog, no matter
how it's been trained, knows how to deal with all the variables out there—
runners, off-leash dogs, bicycles, trailers, squirrels. If you run into something
unexpected, someone might wind up injured, or the dog could get hurt. A lot of
it comes down to respect for the community you're in. Not everyone is as
comfortable as we are with our dogs. Not everyone likes dogs. With Riley on a
leash, I don't have to worry. Instead, I can just focus on our enjoyment.

Welcome back to everyone - many were away over the Christmas and New
Year period and it is good to see everyone back and keen to walk. On the
social scene, we have our monthly braai evening on the 2nd Friday of the
month - although for November, December and January this did not happen life was just too busy. We hope to start again in February. Our next Pub 'n
Grub will be on Wednesday 28th January - look forward to seeing you all
there.
Well done to Pam Shuttleworth who completed the Ronnie Davel 16 km event
and Buthy Arbuthnot who did the 6 km event.

We have two groups – one who walk a shorter route of between 4 and 5 kms;
and another who walk between 6 and 7.5 kms. Anyone is welcome to join us
and we will accommodate you to suit your fitness level and make sure you do
not walk alone. Individual distances walked each evening are entered on a
log with a monthly print-out of the total kilometres walked and times for each
walker.

Traditionally, the “challenge” takes place between the Highway District
(Pinetown, Westville, Queensburgh, Chiltern, Hillcrest, Kearsney, Forest, etc.)
and the Pietermaritzburg District (Collegians, Eskom, Carbs, Saints, Hilton,
Midlands, Howick, etc.) and is run over a course of between 4 and 5 km.
We normally manage to win the challenge on our home ground, but we have
never beaten the Highway Clubs on their own turf. This year we want to
change that, and are relying on you to help us make it happen. The
competition is based on the combined time of the first 10 ladies from each
district to finish the course.
The competition is essentially an opportunity to have some fun, socialise and
interact with woman from other clubs and districts. So, even if you know that
you don’t stand a chance of finishing in the top 10 in Pietermaritzburg, please
come along and enjoy the camaraderie. After the run, braai fires are lit for all
the runners and their supporters to “grill a sausage”, and the pub is open for
drinks.
Club colours should be worn please (for identification purposes), but licence
