Free Biscuits at the Biscuit Club!
Buckfastleigh Primary School
The Biscuit Club is about older people in
town getting to know families with children.
So many children today don’t have much
contact with their grandparents because they
live far away or sometimes because they have
died. These children are keen to meet older
people and hear about their lives in the ‘olden
days’, and talk to them about what it is like
being young today. It’s a very simple idea the elders are the hosts and they welcome a
family into their home, usually when they are
on their way home from school. Over a drink
and a biscuit you play a game and share
some stories whilst you play.
No long
commitment is needed - you can try it out with
just one visit and see how it goes. And if
you’re an adult without children, but keen to
connect with the older generation, you’re
welcome too! This is a new project from
Buckfastleigh Sharing, we have had a really
positive response so far and hope this will be
a way of making our friendly town even
friendlier! The Biscuit Club is intended to
happen at home - several of the older people
already signed up find it tricky to leave the
house, and prefer the Club to come to them.
But we know that some people would prefer to
meet outside their home, so the Biscuit Club
will also meet every Friday throughout March,
in St. Luke’s lounge, from 3.25-4.15pm, for
games, drinks, biscuits and introductions
between the generations. We hope to see

By the time you read this, we’ll already be
past the halfway point of the year, and the
next five weeks have a heady mix of parents’
evenings, class assemblies and lots of school
trips planned.
The two staff teams that took part in the
‘All hands to the Pump to save the Pool’ event
certainly enjoyed themselves, and were
nursing a few aches and pains for the
following days. For the record, they came 2nd
and 8th respectively. Well done to the team
from the Fire Brigade, who just pipped us to
top spot!
Each class has an assembly planned for
this term, and it’s been great to see so many
parents coming in to school to share in their
children’s learning.
Rowan class have been busy planning
their Farmer’s Market, taking place on
Thursday 26 March. Please contact the
school if you’d like more information, or you
are a local producer who would like a table.
Michele Sellick has left the building! After
20 years plus of service to the school as an
administrator, Michele has decided to pursue
a new career and will be setting up a coffee
shop in the town. Good luck Michele, and
thanks for everything!
Bowl for Africa
A big thank you to all who participated and
sponsored the Bowling event in November, a
total of £1185.69 was raised and shared
between the Seed Sowers’ Trust and the
Gambia Fellowship.

Warm Clothing Collection
Buckfastleigh Bowls Club
Thanks to all who gave blankets, warm
clothing and footwear for some of the refugees
who have fled from ISIS to the Kurdish region
of Iraq, many having seen members of their
families and friends brutally murdered.
Together with donations from Plymouth and
Torbay we were able to send three
consignments of 3/4 ton of aid, which has
helped some of those who are not able to be
accommodated in the camps due to sheer
pressure of numbers.
This year our green will be opened by
David Mercer from Bowls Devon on Saturday
18 April, 2.00pm. On Sunday 10 May we
are holding a ‘Bowls Taster Day’, specifically
to encourage new bowlers. Sessions will be
from 11.00-1.00pm, and 2.00-4.00pm, free
coaching and refreshments available, all
equipment provided, although flat shoes are a
must. We will shortly be launching a website,
further details of which will be announced
soon.

South Dartmoor Cycling Club
Advance Notice - the Orchard Millennium
Green will be the venue for the annual Fun
Day on Sunday 28 June. Many of the usual
stalls and activities, including the popular
Duck Race, will be there, plus some new

we look forward to another happy day, and
everyone’s continued support.

Faith Notices
middle of February and everything is most definitely
NOT green and sunshiny outside, if I’m tempting fate a
bit. But then again, we can sure that whatever is
happening outside in March, better weather and new life
will come along in its own good time. The sun will shine
and the hedgerows will burst out, just as they have
always done. It seems to me, that even though we can
be impatient for the better weather to come around, we
appreciate it all the more having come through a bleaker
time.
For many of us, this is the time of year when our
thoughts turn towards Easter, but before we have the
glory of Easter Day, we have the time of preparation
known as Lent, which started on Ash Wednesday, 18
February. A question we often hear at this time of year,
is ‘What are you giving up for Lent?’ To which the
answer is sometimes ‘Lent? What’s that? What are you
talking about?’
Is Lent something rather ‘churchy’ which only the ‘in’
crowd understands, I wonder?
Well, Christians use the six weeks before Easter to
prepare themselves for all the solemnities of Holy Week,
and the great day itself, - the most important in the
Christian calendar, when we celebrate that Jesus rose
again, and defeated death. One dictionary says that
‘Lent is normally observed as a time of fasting and
abstinence’. Hence the question, ‘What are you giving
up for Lent?’
Some people set themselves the challenge of giving
up smoking or chocolates, or alcohol during Lent, and to
turn it into a positive exercise it seems a good idea to
give away the money thus saved. Whatever you save
by giving up chocolates for six weeks, I am sure your
donation would be gratefully received by whatever
charity you nominate.
Some people try to read a chapter of the Bible each
day, or go to a Lent course, or spend five extra minutes
a day in prayer. There are all sorts of ways we can take
positive steps to grow in our faith, and Lent seems as
good a time as any to do it.
Whatever we decide, our Lord will be with us on the
journey through Lent, and we will be ready to celebrate
his resurrection.
