Abraham built an altar and took out a knife to sacrifice his son Isaac. But God called out to him and told him of blessings that would be bestowed on him and his descendants because he had been willing to do what God had asked. Tuesday Is 1:10, 16-20; Mt 23:1-12 Wednesday Jer 18:18-20; Mt 20:17-28 Second Reading: Romans 8:31b-34 Thursday Jer 17:5-10; Lk 16:19-31 Paul reminds the people that God did not spare his only Son, but gave him up for the sake of all people. This proves God views us all as his children, and that no person can harm or condemn us because God will protect us. First Friday Gn 37:3-4, 12-13a, 17b-28a; Mt 21:33-43, 45-46 First Saturday Mi 7:14-15, 18-20; Lk 15:1-3, 11-32 Gospel: Mark 9:2-10 Jesus led Peter, James and John up a high mountain, where he conversed with Elijah and Moses. A voice proclaimed ‘This is my Son, my beloved. Listen to him.” Then Jesus was alone and warned them not to tell anyone what they had seen until he had risen from the dead. PRAYER INTENTIONS OF POPE FRANCIS FOR MARCH (U) Universal Prayer (E) Evangelization Prayer U: Scientists: That those involved in scientific research may serve the well-being of the whole human person E: Contribution of Women: That the unique contribution of women to the life of the Church may be recognized always A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Second Sunday of Lent March 1, 2015 “God put Abraham to the test. He called him: Abraham’ He replied, ‘Here I am.’ Then God said: ‘Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height I shall point out to you…’ ‘Do not lay your hand on the boy… Do not do the least thing to him. I know now how devoted you are to God since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son.’”… “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” The period of lent is a time for testing. Like exams in school, or annual physical checkups, they assist us to determine our knowledge, our professional competence, and our physical health. This time of prayer allows us to focus on our spiritual health and well being. How well am I with God at this moment? Are there areas for improvement. Am I complacent or content just to sit back and do nothing? Can I be truly honest as I hold my spiritual medical report in my hand? What areas in my relationship with others needs some remedy? Is there someone who needs my love, care and concern? Is there some area of fragmentation I should attend to, and not just sweep under the rug? Abraham passed the test with flying colors. Lent is the time the Lord places before us to make our needed improvements. Our father in faith, Abraham, like our heavenly Father responded generously. I can use this time of lent to do the same. In the long run, I will benefit. A Poem for the Parish O Woe! Snow O No! Have I treated people, events, or things as more important than God? You shall not take the name of the Lord you God in vain. Have my words, actively or passively, put down God, the Church or people. Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day. Do I go to Mass every Sunday (or Saturday Vigil) and on Holy Days of Obligation (Jan. 1 the Ascension; Aug. 15; Nov. 1; Dec. 8; Dec. 25) Do I avoid, when possible, work that impedes worship to God, joy for the Lord’s Day, and proper relaxation of mind and body? Do I look for ways to spend time with family or in service on Sunday? Honor your father and your mother. Do I show my parents due respect? Do I seek to maintain good communication with my parents where possible? Do I criticize them for lacking skills I think they should have? You shall not kill. Have I harmed another through physical, verbal or emotional means, including gossip or manipulation of any kind? You shall not commit adultery. Have I respected the physical and sexual dignity of others and of myself? another? You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Have I gossiped, told lies, or embellished stories at the expense of another? You shall not covet your neighbor’s spouse. Have I honored my spouse with my full attention and exclusive love? You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods. Am I content with my own means and needs, or do I compare myself to others unnecessarily? Christ’s Two Commandments How well do we love God and others? Do we love as Christ calls us to? In the Gospel of Matthew, Christ gives us Two Commandments: He said to him, You shall love the Lord your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments. (Matthew 22:27-40) Not sure what love is? St. Paul describes it for us in his Letter to the Corinthians. Is this how you love God and others? “Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quicktempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails” (1 Cor 13:4-8) Mondays 7:00-8:30pm Every church in the Diocese of Paterson will have Confession How to go to Confession Penitent: When you enter say, “In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen” Priest: May begin with “May God who has enlightened every heart, help you know your sins and trust in his mercy.” Priest: Reads the Word of God (optional) Penitent: Confess your sins. For example, “Bless me Father for I have sinned. It has been (how long?) since my last confession.” And “These are my sins.” Priest: Listens, may give counsel, gives you a penance to perform; i.e., prayers, good deeds, reparation for theft, etc. He then asks you to make a “good Act of Contrition.” Penitent: Pray the Act of Contrition, using these or other words: “My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. Amen.” Priest: Gives you absolution, offers you God’s peace and dismisses you. Penitent: Say or do your penance as soon as possible or at the priest’s direction. **Remember that the priest is willing to guide the penitent through all the steps of confession THIS GUIDE IS ALSO AVAILABLE IN THE CONFESSIONAL 6 Religious Formation Children's Liturgy Every Sunday Morning at 9am Mass during Lent Introducing Children to the Eucharistic Liturgy.
