The Bektash News
I recently received via email a request from the Clown unit to participate in 27 activities this year. This
is truly amazing to me. I had no
idea how many things the Clowns
do in the name of the Shriners
Hospitals and Bektash Shriners.
Congratulations and thank you for
all of your hard work!
POTENTATE “2015”
RICHARD QUINDLEY
Thoughts From The Potentate
Here we are almost into the third
month of the year. I can't believe
it's going so quickly , although
winter does not seem to want to
end.
Lady Connie and I have been really busy traveling around the
north east. We also have been
visiting the clubs and unit meetings.
We most recently visited the Mini
Choppers which first ceremonial
master John Flaherty is trying to
get off the ground. If you would
like to help with this endeavor
please contact Noble John. They
are planning to participate in some
parades and other Shriner events.
It is good to see some enthusiasm
in forming a new unit and need
more of this kind of activities.
In regards to membership, I urge
each and every one of you to go to
your Blue Lodge meetings.
We
need new members and this is
where we will find them, plus I
guarantee you will enjoy the experience. Do not forget this is from
where we came. The lodge is a
place we can go where we are all
equals. It's where you can relax
and feel good about yourself and
enjoy the friendship of your brothers.
I went this week with Noble Bill
Greenan to an elementary school
in Brookline, NH where the teacher, Mrs Calkins and her classes for
the past 4 years have been collecting tabs as a class project. They
collected 1,000,140 tabs. The project was done to show the students
what 1,000,000 items looked like.
They chose tabs to help the
Shriners hospital. Incidentally,
Past Potentates Eddy Whitcomb's
granddaughter is in this class. Noble Bill and I discovered that
1,000,000 tabs weigh 632 lbs,
March 2015
which at 69 cents a pound is
$411 they have raised so far for
Shriners Hospitals and Bektash
Shriners. Thank you Mrs. Calkins and her class for a job well
done! (See photos on page 29).
I would like to close on a sad
note. This week we lost a Noble
who had only joined in January at
the age of 18. This young man
will be sorely missed by all who
knew him. Rest in peace Corey
Lobdell. Lady Connie and I loved
you dearly.

Shriners of North America, is an Interna onal fraternity based on fun, fellowship, and

RECORDER’S CORNER
My message to all: “Spring will arrive on March 20,
2015”. By then, we will probably be buried alive in
snow and the three-day cycle will con nue on un l
June. Wow, what a winter. We had to change the Valen ne
Dinner Dance from February 14 to February 28. We had 3
couples cancel but we added 5 couples.
I con nue to learn my new posi on as Recorder with the help
of Joel, Jess and Richard. They are very helpful and great to
work with. Dan Salo, our Editor, is also a great help and does a
wonderful job for Bektash and the Bektash News.
The first week of March, I will be off to San Diego, California
for the Recorder’s Conference. They will be introducing a new
computer Membership Program. I understand that it has
been in the works for some me and will give the Shrine Centers much more informa on and be easier to use than the
program we have now. We will have a hands-on introduc on
to this tool at the Conference.
Next up in March is the NSA Mid-Winter Mee ng March 12-15
in Lewiston, Maine. This is the planning session for the Fall
Field Days slated for September 17-19, 2015.

In Mid-February, Ill. Richard Quindley was presented with a 5year Tab Collec on Project from Captain Samuel Douglas Academy in Brookline, NH. The total number of tabs collected were
one million two thousand one hundred and four (1,002,104).
This collec on was accomplished by the school’s 4th graders
and took 5 years to complete. The 4th grade teacher, Debbie
Calkin, spearheaded the effort and helped to introduce the
project to each fourth grade class over the last 5 years. It was
quite a story and made the front page of the Nashua Telegraph. We all say “thanks a million” to Debbie and the kids.
Great job!
As promised, I must again remind one and all about Shrine
membership. Please get to your Blue Lodge -- support the Masonic Order and promote the Shrine to all the Brethren. If you
find a candidate, remember “the bo om line is where we find
the answer that will cure the decline”. Let’s help Ill. Richard
cure the Bektash decline in membership.
Well, it is snowing again. I, like everyone else, must go out and
shovel again. When does it stop?? Stay safe and think SPRING!

Want to earn money for your Unit, Club or a Bektash
Charity with no cash investment on your part?
Sell Bektash 2015 Cash Calendars
We hope you all purchase or get involved on becoming part of the
2015 Cash Calendars Raffle. A repeat of our successful past events will
be made for 2015. A copy of our ad is on the adjacent page. Take a
look, it’s great!
We will have a total of 2500 to sell as we did in 2014. This is a major
fund raiser for Bektash. It is in the same league as Bingo and the
“Fez”tival of Trees. It is and has been the major fund raiser for several
of our sister Shrine Centers.
Here’s how you can easily become part of this exciting fund raiser! No
upfront investment or upfront cash required. We supply the calendars
on consignment to your Unit, Club or a Noble, your choice. Your Unit,
Club or Bektash Charity can earn a commission of $2.00 for each calendar sold. The $2.00 commission will be paid in July 2016.
As a bonus, when all 2500 calendars are sold the commission will be
increased to $3.00 for each calendar sold by the Unit, Club or Noble.
The $3.00 commission will be paid in 2016 to the Unit, Club or Bektash
Charity of your choice, once we sell all 2500 calendars. 1900 were sold
0n 2013. Help us sell all 2500 for 2015. We can do it!
If the Noble does not belong to a Unit or Club, the Noble, his family
and friends can sell the Calendars with the commission paid to a
Bektash Charity of their choice.
We will have these beautiful full color calendars in July. Based on what
we have experienced for in the last two years we feel that the calendars
will sell out quickly. So, get yours in July and help Bektash sell all
2500.
Contact the Bektash Office at 603-225-5372 so that we can get you
started. Thanks.

Did You Ever Want to Run Away
& Join the Circus?
Now you can (sorta) with
Bektash "Clown-For-A-Day"!!!
You've heard about the Bektash Clown Unit - a bunch of slightly crazy Shriners who
have more fun than ... well, a barrel-full of clowns. We make people laugh and especially make kids smile (a very Shriner thing to do, don't you think?). And we're looking for a "few good wannabe clowns" to join our unit.
Admit it, you know you've thought about how it would be so much fun to try!! And
now you can with the Bektash Clowns "Clown For A Day". Try being a clown for just
one day and see what it's all about. Join us at a parade or other event. We'll get you
into a costume, put on your clown face, pair you up with a Bektash Clown for the day,
and make sure you have the best time ever! Maybe you'll want to do it again and join
our unit, but even if you don't you'll have a day to remember! And we'll even take a
photo of you with the unit.
For over 25 years the Bektash Shrine Clowns have entertained generations of families
and children across New Hampshire. From St. Patrick's Day through 4th of July, all
summer long, and into the Holiday season you've found us at town parades and other
events, putting smiles on faces of all ages!
What are you waiting for?

THE100MILLIONDOLLARCLUB
The 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children have provided lifesaving
and life-changing medical care to more than 800,000 children,
regardless of their ability to pay.
The money to provide these needed services at 22 hospitals
comes from many sources: community donations; fundraising
events; investment income; and support from the Shriners International.
As health care costs increase, Shriners Hospitals needs your
help, more than ever, to continue to provide more specialized
care, offer medical education and conduct more research. Too
many people believe that if they cannot donate or leave a large
sum or money, their gift will not count. Every contribution helps.
In order to encourage donors to contribute to Shriners Hospitals
for Children, the HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR CLUB was established in 1972. The club is named for its goal of adding 100
million dollars to the endowment fund through gifts or bequests of
$100 or more.
HOWTOJOIN
There are three ways to become a member of the 100 Million
Dollar Club: (1) By contributing $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children; (2) By having your will include a bequest of
$100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children; or (3) By adding
a provision to an existing will leaving $100 or more to Shriners
Hospitals for Children. Shriners. Please fill out the form on the
right and send your contribution to Bektash Shriner's Recorder
Joel Weinstein.
WHATYOURECEIVE
Each donor receives a handsome 100 Million Dollar Club certificate. By contributing $100, you can feel like a million, knowing
that you have helped to ensure that Shriners Hospitals for Children will be able to continue helping children in the years to
come.
