The Potentate’s Message
Moving along with our WE year, we are approaching the convention season and Florida
Shrine Association is this month at Sahib, in Sarasota. This is an opportunity for us to meet
and associate with our fellow nobles from around the state and observe the competitions
and see who has done the most practicing since last year. GO EGYPT. On this same note,
in July comes the Imperial Convention, which will be held in Houston and this will be a NEW
experience for the competing units. Competition will be held inside the Houston Convention
Center, which constitutes 1.8 million square feet of air conditioned space. BIG PLACE.
The Imperial Potentate will recess the business session so as all who desire can observe
the competitions and then the business session will be reconvened. First time this has ever
been done.
This month will be the Potentates trip which will begin in San Juan, Puerto Rico, traverse the Panama Canal, make
stops in Guatemala, Costa Rica, several in Mexico and terminate in San Diego. All activities at Egypt will continue, as
scheduled, and the Chief Rabban, will be the go to person during this period.
Our Spring Ceremonial is June 6th and if you have any petitions to be voted on get them in so they can be voted on at
the May 27th Stated meeting. ( NOTE THE MAY STATED MEETING HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE 27TH DUE TO THE
POTENTATES TRIP)
The Task Force, to replace our tenant, is moving along well. The light, at the end of the tunnel, is shining brighter.
This month is very special as it is the month we celebrate
our military and veterans, who gave and are giving of
themselves, so that WE can have the freedoms in this
GOD fearing country we so enjoy. THANK YOU.
Yours in The Faith,
May God bless us all, in doing his work and the work of our
beloved Shrine, and keep us ever mindful of our objectives
and obligations to the children in our hospital system.

MEMBERSHIP
5 for 5 Membership Program Guidelines
‘The Noble’ is the top-line signer (T.L.S.) for FIVE New
Candidates who become EGYPT Shriners and each of
whom remains current in their payment of dues for a
period of FIVE years.
The TLS must have remained current in paying HIS
own dues for that same period and not have been
suspended during that same period for non-payment
of dues.
A ‘new noble’ must remain Egypt Shriners for at least
one year prior to transferring membership to another
Shrine Center to qualify under the program.
Should any of the ‘new Nobles’ resign their membership
or be suspended for non-payment of dues, that ‘new
noble’ will no longer be included in this incentive
program. The TLS must nominate a new candidate
and that replacement candidate must remain a Noble
as described above for 5 years, as well as the TLS’s
other candidates.
When the TLS has nominated five Shriners who remain
current in the payment of their dues for five years, he
will receive a Life Membership at a stated meeting.
This program will commence January 1, 2015. It is
NOT retroactive!

Scottish Rite
News
By Worshipful Casey Fletcher 32°, KCCH
The rituals and ceremonies of Freemasonry are
replete with symbols, myths and metaphors. The
most obvious symbols are the working tools of the
stonemasons: trowels, compasses, squares, levels
and other such instruments. Sometimes the symbols
are colors, such as the colors of the attire that might
be worn in the second section of the Master Mason
degree. King Solomon’s robe is purple, perhaps
symbolizing rank, status, royalty or station. The color
of our aprons is a symbol.
Our founding legend, the Hiramic Legend, is really a
myth. A myth is not intended to teach factual history.
Its purpose is to present concepts in such a way as
to help us acquire or recognize some truth. Myths are
stories, stories about things that might not represent
the way things really happened, but, nonetheless,
they might represent something very “true.”
Metaphors help us explain something by suggesting
it is “like” something else. A Lodge is a metaphor for
the world, as explained in the Entered Apprentice
lecture. The Temple can be a metaphor for the
individual man. The evergreen sprig of acacia is
presented as a metaphor in the Master Mason’s
lecture (it is also explained as a symbol).
Solomon, the movement is also down, down into the
vaults of Enoch. In the 15th and 16th degrees, Knight
of the East and Prince of Jerusalem, respectively, we
move back and forth between Babylon and Jerusalem.
Such “traveling” does have some historical basis, but
are these journeys simply to support the plot? Or is
there a suggestion of some other lesson?
The movements in our degrees, our hand gestures,
our steps up or down and the directions we travel may
have as much to teach us as our symbols, myths and
metaphors. Freemasonry offers its lessons in many
ways.
The Scottish Rite’s degrees will next be conferred
on October 17th and 24th. Petitions are available at
http://tampascottishrite.org.
The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in
Tampa on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:30
PM, preceded by a 5:45 PM dinner. During the May
11th Consistory meeting, Brother Kenneth Carolan,
32nd degree, will present an educational program.
Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No.
6 in Bartow, Florida. He aspires to travel much, even
if only vicariously.

So our rituals teach by using symbols, myths and
metaphors. Less obviously, they sometimes teach by
movement or motion. How and where we travel seem
to be worthy of reflection.
Early in our degrees, we hear the words “conduct,”
“re-conduct” and “travel.” Candidates are placed in
certain places and move about the Lodge in prescribed
manners. Movement is generally clockwise – is there
a suggestion there? The path is ultimately toward the
East (a symbol or metaphor?). Certain movements
are proscribed. We kneel or we stand “body erect.”
We “step” in different ways in each degree.
In the Fellow Craft degree, the movement is “up,”
up the winding stairs. Later we are “raised.” In the
10th degree, Elu of the Fifteen, we again move down
into the quarries. In the 13th degree, Royal Arch of
As you look down the hall of the Outpatient
Department, you will see that it is brightly colored and
the rooms are easily identified by the number on the
flag over the entry door; that is how the adults may
identify the room. Remember that first and foremost,
we are a children’s hospital and as such, we do
everything possible to appeal to the child, therefore,
the children can easily identify the rooms by the sea
life painted on the doors. Each room interior walls
and ceilings are wall papered to match the doors and
are equipped with a TV with child friendly stations.
The painted walls and ceilings aid in entertainment
for the patient as well as distraction during any
needed procedures.
In these rooms, the medical staff may make the initial

examination of the child to determine the best course
of action to be taken. Follow up visits, cast removal
and installations and minor adjustments are also done
in these rooms. Room 10 is used for telemedicine
appointments so patients that live locally can have a
follow-up with specialists at one of our other hospitals
and not have to travel.
Let’s head back to the elevator to tour the downstairs.
As we walk along the hall way, please take note of
the wooden handrail system. It provides support for
those who may need it and are of adult or teenage
height and there is also support for those who are
not quite as tall. The shorter rail is also wide enough
to provide protection to the walls from wheelchair
bumps and bruises. Great care and effort is taken to
maintain and protect our facility.

Brandon Shrine

meeting to accept the check.
By Noble David Jones
Greetings Nobles, Brandon Shrine Club had a very
successful March. The club held a sold out Spaghetti
Dinner Fund raiser and our attendance was fine for our
monthly Birthday luncheon and also our Business meeting.
The Fez Tip boxes placed at the following locations
continue to bring in much needed funds for the Egypt
Temple Hospital Transportation Fund:
Plummers Family Restaurant - Seffner
Fred’s Market Restaurant – Riverview
Fishhawk Sporting Clays – Lithia
Brandon Masonic Lodge # 114
Desoto Masonic Lodge # 105
BSC members are encouraged to attend the next stated
Temple meeting on April 8th when a large check is
presented to the Potentate from the Fez tip boxes.
BSC April social & dinner with our Ladies will be held at
MiMi’s Restaurant in Brandon on April 27th at 7:00 p.m.
We have had several dinners over the years at MiMi’s and
they have always been enjoyable.
A tip of the Fez to our newest BSC member Noble Johnny
Alayon.
Nobles are invited to attend the Brandon Shrine Club
which meets the last Monday of the month. April’s social
will be held at MiMi’s restaurant at 7:00 p.m. not at the
clubhouse. On even numbered months a social is held with
our Ladies. On odd numbered months a dinner/ business
meeting is held at our clubhouse located at 125 Skywood
Dr. in Seffner,33584. Nobles only.

By Noble Artie Lent
The HCSC Board decided to keep the club socials going
during the summer months. The club had good attendance
last summer and we hope it will continue.
On May 12 at High Noon there will be a ribbon cutting
ceremony dedicating, “The Larry Cotton Hall”. The
Henando Chamber of Commerce will join us for the
ceremony. Please attend under Fez to remember our hard
working Noble Larry Cotton. Light food will be served in
the hall. We need about four volunteers to help with buffing
the floor on April 28th at 8:00am. Please let Fred Basehore
know if you can help that morning.
The next Social on April 21th will feature Sally and Roy
doing one of their great shows. I’ll be back in May with a
new show singing some Neil Diamond tunes. We will also
have a Veteran tribute at the May social which I’ll tell you
more about in the May Newsletter.
The Chili dinner at the last Club Meeting was a great
success. We will have Bar-B-Q Chicken with all the sides
before the next General meeting May 5th at 6:00pm.
PP Larry Hawley will be the cook that night. I will email
everyone a few days prior to get a count of who is coming.
We will also be selling take out dinners that night for those
who want to bring a dinner home to your Lady. Please
remember our sick in your prayers.

propane tank is disconnected from the grill. Check to see
that you have a full tank of gas, but don’t overload propane
into the propane cylinder, as the liquid will expand.
Check out your burners to ensure the lines are clear and
distributing gas evenly. Then, evaluate hoses for any tears
or leaks by using a soap and water solution (and never a
flame). For grills using lava rocks, be sure to replace these
every year.
Our May Social will be on Saturday, May 9th. The club will
honor Mothers during this social. Check the newsletter for
the details. It will be a fun night so make your reservations
right away if you have not already done so. Call the
Shrine office and leave your reservation on the answering
machine at 863 382-2208. We are also in the planning
stages of a Memorial Day Picnic again this year. Again,
check news letter for the details once plans have been
firmed up by the board.
Replacement hoses, replacement gas tubes, pipe cleaners
to clear any clogged gas tubes, replacement lava rocks
Also, Nobles and Masons don’t forget if you are traveling
to or thru Highlands County with a motor home or RV,
please keep the Shrine Club in mind for an overnight stay
or longer if you prefer. We have 4 spaces with electricity
and water located on our grounds in shaded areas. These
accommodations are reserved for Nobles and Masons
only, at a very nominal donation. So nobles and brothers,
set your GPS in our direction. We are located at 2604
State Road 17, Avon Park, Fl. For more information, call
our club at 863 382-2208, leave your name & telephone
number and we will get back to you shortly.
In closing, we urge all of our Nobles and Ladies to plan
to support your club activities more this fall. Activities are
planned with you in mind and it is more fun with a good
attendance so please support the upcoming activities
Remember, this is your club. Isn’t it great to be a Shriner!

Necessary equipment:
Cleaning:
Start with the grilling surface. Remove the grates and use
a wire brush against them in warm, soapy water for a preseason deep cleaning. While what’s happening on the
inside of the grill is much more vital than the outside, don’t
abandon looks completely — a microfiber towel and a little
stainless steel cleaner can go a long way.
Necessary equipment:
Mild detergent to wash internal grill parts, rag or sponge,
wire brush, microfiber towel, stainless steel cleaner
Know Your Surroundings:
Safety always comes first. Be sure to remove any potential
fire hazards from the space near the grill and any objects
or furniture that might obstruct the cooking process. While
everyone likes to crowd around the food, give yourself
ample room to tend to the flame. Keep any drinks in a safe
and sturdy place that won’t risk spillage or breakage near
the grub. Making space for the grilling area beforehand will
alleviate the struggle when the time comes to actually grill.

March was another busy month for the Lakeland Shrine
Club and by the time you read this, we will have had an
even busier April with at least 18 trips. We continue to have
new patients that are making their first trip to the hospital
and they are very impressed with our transport and the
staff at the hospital.
I want to say a special thank you to Wink Dillard for
his knowledge, time and effort to schedule all of these
patients. It takes a very dedicated person to spend their
time to make contact with the patients and be sure they
are ready when we arrive. Thank you Wink!
To all the transport drivers and co-drivers that are going
back north for the summer, I want to thank you for your
help this winter. I wish you safe travels and want you to
know how much you will be missed. I hope to see you all
again in the fall.
On behalf of the Sam Swope Charity Ride done by
members of the Bahia Shrine and their ladies, I would like
to thank the members of the Egypt Shrine Motor Corps
and Provost Guard that came over to help make this ride a
success. The ride donated another check for $350,000.00
to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Tampa. If you have
not been a part of this ride before, you need to think about
joining us next year. You don’t have to ride a motorcycle
to enjoy the good times we have and all the proceeds go
directly to our Tampa Hospital.
A special thank you to Posner Park Dodge Jeep Chrysler
on Highway 27 in Davenport for their support of our Shrine
Club by doing oil changes and vehicle services on our
vans. If you need expert service on your vehicles, stop by
and see Michael Rago, Service Manager, and be sure to
mention that you are a Shriner.
The Lakeland Shrine Club uniform shirts have arrived and
if you would like to order one, please let me know. Join us
for our club meetings that take place on the 4th Thursday of
the month at Golden Corral on 98 N in Lakeland. Everyone
and their ladies are welcome to join us for dinner at 6:30
and stay for the meeting at 7:30. We have a great group of
dedicated members, but are always looking for more. It is
such a rewarding feeling when you are helping our Shrine

year. That is more than likely due to what is described as
the aging process. I’ll have to ask Dallas about that.
And you can’t have a great parade without a great
“afterglow.” This party is held at the clubs’ new home.
Our club has acted as the host of this party for as long as
anyone can remember. The Legion provides the food and
camel’s milk and the Club makes sure that everyone is
provided for and happy.
And now it’s off to the Legion post in Hudson for our spring
fling picnic. This picnic features the usual fare along with
Carolina barbeque and Lexington cole slaw. Hope to see
you there.
Make sure that your chaser is not a trooper. Here’s to you

By now we will have had our second meeting in our new
Club Room. The remodeling is nearly complete and the
decorating is partially done. Our bar-room has a tap
featuring our own distinct brew “Red Fez” amongst others.
How lucky can a Shrine Club be?
We voted on a new member Noble Matt Winters at our
March meeting. We also voted to sponsor a hole at the
“Putting for a Purpose” event to be held by the Ladies of
the Oriental Shrine (LOSNA) at the Shriners Hospital for
Children in Tampa on June 7th.

We are continuing to support the Egypt Shrine events i.e.
the various parades, Circus and other events.
The second meeting in our new home was as successful
as the first. Of course the most important item of every
club meeting is the food and that was a ten or maybe an
eleven. Not sure why they named the post “Paradise”
but it has been that for the New Port Richey Shrine Club.
Another reason for having a successful meeting is that we
handed out two petitions for new members.
The highlight of every Spring in New Port Richey is the
Chasco Fiesta. Ten days of fun in the sun, minus one
or two for showers. This parade is touted as the second
largest parade in the state and those who participate in it
can attest to that by the large crowds that line the streets.
The parade always seems to get longer, and hotter, every

wives of the Sun City Center Club gave a lot of hours to
serve up all those pancakes, sausages, juice and coffee.
The result of all this work will be evident when we make

will be held in the Florida Room of the Atrium on the North
Campus off Pebble Beach. We look forward to those
quieter summer meetings and recharging our batteries!

Fun N’ Frolic
By Noble Brian “Pops” Hamwey
What a phenomenal month, clowns!! April saw some
great Egypt Shrine events, including the annual Easter
Egg Hunt and the Military/First Responders Appreciation
Day. The ‘T’ made a special appearance at the Easter
Egg Hunt, delighting kids young and old with rides around
the parking lot. Balloons up to all of those clowns that
made these events memorable.
More importantly, though, April was the clowns’ annual
time to shine with the 50th installment of the Egypt Shrine
Circus at Raymond James Stadium. So much fun and
frolic was had by all of the clowns, nobles and families
in attendance. Every clown in attendance has a special
memory or two that they took away from one of the nine
shows.
May is a chance for the unit to catch its breath and recover
with the stated meeting happening on May 13th and the
unit meeting on May 20th.
Motor Corps
By Noble Andy Foster
Egypt Shrine Motor Corps: “A motorcycle competition
and parade unit that has fun helping support Egypt
Shrine, International Shrine and especially the children
in our hospital system.” Visit us on Facebook, group
page “Egypt Shrine Motor Corps.” We post Motor Corps
pictures and videos.
The pickle is now riding with Andy Foster. Yes, the pickle
has changed hands quite frequently over the last few
months. Feel free to ask Andy his story. We all have one.
If you guess what happened, I (he) will buy you a drink or
at least owe you one.
The Motor Corps has had several wonderful rides these
past few months, and we have some exciting rides
coming up. All riders are welcome to come out and enjoy
the fellowship. Please visit us at “Egypt Shrine Motor
Corps” group page on Facebook for future events.
Congratulations to all the participants of the 2015 FSA
competitions in Sarasota, Fl.. Again Egypt Shrine was
heavily involved in Florida Shrine Association. Including
Florida Association of Shrine Motor Corps, Florida State
Shrine Legion of Honor and Florida State Shrine Clowns
Association. Egypt Shrine came back with plenty of
trophies and awards. But more importantly we had great
Fraternal Fellowship with our Brothers from other Shrine
Centers around the State of Florida.
Practices will be staring for International Shrine
Competitions in Houston, Tx. Our regular Sunday
morning practices will be starting. Visitors are always
welcome. We start at about 9:30 am every Sunday.
Imperial Session of the “International Shrine” will be held
in Houston Texas from July 5 to July 9, 2015.
Ride safe, stay alert and enjoy the freedom of the open
rode.
Oriental Band
By Noble Robert E. Stihler
The Black Camel visited Noble Sal Macaluso on 1 March
2015. Bro Sal became a member of the Oriental Band in
May 1979, and he and Lady Mable were very active with
the Band. After his “retirement”, Noble Sal and Lady
Mable always attended the Band’s annual Christmas
Dinner at the Colonnade Restaurant and all looked
forward to seeing them to reminisce about “the Good Old
Days” when the Band had 30-35 members. In the January
2007 issue of the Sands, I wrote about how Sal brought
the late Noble Dave Fitzgerald into the Band. Bro Dave
had played trumpet with the Army Band when he was on
active duty. In April 1985 while in the Activities Building,
Dave asked Sal where the “Big Band” met, and Sal said
“just come with me”. Our condolences and prayers go out
to Lady Mable and family.
Our prayers and concerns also go to Brother President
Bill Martin and Lady Christine as he underwent gall
bladder surgery on Friday, March 20th. We pray for a
speedy recovery.

Band Tong #54 is planing to present a Mandarin Degree
on Friday, May 8th. Although the Degree is presented
by the Oriental Band … a reminder, that the Degree is
open to any Shriner … so those Nobles of other Units are
invited and encouraged to “Meet the Mandarin” and enjoy
the “Masonic mysteries of the East”.
There are no May Birthdays, but we wish all our Lovely
Ladies a very Happy Mother’s Day.

As we roll into May, remember to submit any petitions this
month prior to the Ceremonial on June 6. Our last drill
team practice prior to FASMC will be May 3. Perfect for
us to follow practice with the Director’s Staff famous Corn
Boil! Our 6-man team has been making improvements
weekly, and I know you will be proud of them as we
compete in Sarasota on May 8. Find out the results at our
May 12 meeting - all Shriners are invited as guests.
This will be another busy month with parades, Florida
Shrine Association, Grand Lodge and Lodge Visits, and
other Shrine events. Check your calendar books and
come out and participate in your Shrine functions. Pole
dancing and having fun at the parades with great music
and participation has placed the Guard as number one
parade Unit! Go Guardsmen.
Remember our commitment to Membership and get
those petitions into the office for the Spring Ceremonial.
The Guard’s challenge is to get new members for the
Shrine this year. Let’s go Guard!
Welcome to our newest member Noble John Nelson and
Lady Sharon. Have fun and get involved! All Nobles in
good standing are welcome to join with the Egypt Shrine
Provost Guard. We meet on the third Thursday of each
month at 7:30 P.M. in the Unit Room. Come out and join
with us.
Happy Mother’s Day!

Provost Guard
By Noble Tom Edwards PP
Thank you to all the Guard members who supported the
50th Jubilee Egypt Shrine Circus & Carnival with parking
and security duties. The Circus was a great success and
your participation made the difference. A “Tip of the Fez”
to all who worked so hard and had fun!
And the planning has begun for the Annual Provost
Guard Country Western Dance with Nobles Harry Pope,
Joe Osborne Sr., Joey Davis, Brent Sleeper, and Don
Stockton as chairmen for this great event. I can’t wait
to see the band and the famous two-step dancing on
Saturday, October 24, 2015. Everyone’s invited to the
western party! See any Guard Members for tickets.
Remember the calendar of events include the Florida
Shrine Association Convention May 7-10, 2015 at Sahib
Shrine. Come out and support FSA and your Shrine Unit.
Good luck to all the Units competing in the events.
18 • Sands Magazine - May 2015
My follow Nobles, this month’s article will be considerably
shorter; not because of less activity to report on, but
because April is loaded with activity. As you know, the
Shrine Circus is in town and it is all hands on deck. This
is a great opportunity for the Nobles to support our kids,
our hospital and reward yourself in the process. If you
didn’t get a chance to participate in the Circus this year,
please ask an experienced Noble to point you in the right
direction for next year. Your time and energy will be very
welcome.
Also, the Scottish Rite had their Spring Reunion, which
provided a chance to help guide the new candidates in
their journey of discovery. As the editor explained, when
traveling along the “road to further light, it’s easier when
driving a Tin Lizzie”. Speaking of which, we are a growing
unit and willing to train eager new members. You don’t
need a car to belong, but it sure does enhance the good
times.
Please mark your calendars for Friday, May 8 (7:00 am
– 1:00 pm) to help cheer on the Tin Lizzies during the
FASMC competition in Sarasota. The event will be held
at the SKC dog track. We look forward to the support, and
it promises to be a fun week. For a complete schedule,
please refer to the website or contact the office. This year
the Sahib Shrine in Sarasota will be hosting the FSA.
From time to time The Legion of Honor is privileged to present the
history of one of our members. It is an honor to recognize a member
of our group who served in World War II, and here is part one of a two
part biography on Al Chabot.
Al Chabot was born in 1925 and was raised in Methuen, Massachusetts,
where he attended and graduated High School. After High School, Al
attended one year at MIT where he studied Mechanical Engineering.
In 8/1943 he received his draft notice and reported to, and indoctrinated
into the Army. After being issued his uniform and equipment he was put
on a train for three days and was not told where he was going. When
they were finally allowed to get off the train Al found himself at Camp
Walters, in Mineral Wells, Texas where he attended basic training for
the next 15 weeks. After training, Al volunteered to be in the Ski Troops
and was sent to Colorado for 3 ½ weeks of training. Unfortunately, after
injuring himself Al was returned to Camp Walters for a hernia operation.
Al had the operation and was laid up for some time confined to the hospital bed. While he was on the
mend the Army realized that Al had attended MIT and decided he would be a perfect fit as a doctor’s
assistant and began his training. While training he was given the opportunity to work in numerous wards in
the hospital. For the last part of his training PFC Chabot was sent to Fort Clayton, Panama, for the hands
on part of his training. One morning at the end of his training, he and the other soldiers were awaked at
0430 and told to get packed, get over to the Mess Hall, eat, and prepare to move out. They were put on a
plane and sent on their way. When the plane finally landed Al found himself back at Camp Walters, Texas.
In September 1944 Al was packed up, and sent on another train headed for Fort Meade, Maryland. Once
at Fort Meade he was re-equipped and sent from Fort Meade to Ellis Island, New York where he boarded
a Merchant Marines Troop Transport headed for England. While under way to England the ship was
attacked by Germans. They were hit by a torpedo that disabled the rudder. Much like his initial entry into
the Army, Al found himself once again going around in circles.
Al and the other soldiers were eventually off loaded onto the Queen Elizabeth, and were taken to Portsmouth,
England, where they were taken to another location, continuing their movement east. In October 1944,
Al and the other soldiers were sent to relieve the 82nd Air Borne at Antwerp, Belgium. He was part of the
force that was ordered to defend the city. Soon the unit was cut off and surrounded by German troops and
was harassed day and night. The unit was resupplied by air drops from the 8th Air Force, but unfortunately
some of those drops missed their mark and ended up being used by the Germans instead. The unit was
holding on, cut off, and rumored to be waiting to hook up with Patton and his Armored Division.
By now it was late November or early December and was the coldest winter in 35 years. Many of the
soldiers were suffering from trench foot and frostbite including Al who had lost the feeling in his feet as
they were starting to turn black. In December 1944, Al’s Lieutenant told him that he needed to get to the
rear and suggested that he help man the weapons carrier, which would be the only chance he may have
to get the medical attention he needed. Al managed to get through the German lines and made it to Parris
where he spent three days at the hospital treating himself for frost bite by rubbing his feet and massaging
his legs in an effort to regain blood flow. When he was able to get back on his feet, he was told that he was
being sent to the front lines, and to get his equipment together so he could move out. Later in December
1944, Al was sent to Simmerath, Germany, on the boarder of France and Germany, and was assigned to
A Company, 309th Infantry Regiment.

The 2015 Jubilee Shrine Circus & Carnival came to town
and what a great event for Egypt Shriners. Thank you to
all the Nobles and Ladies who made this event so special
for over 5,000 children who would never have been able
to attend a Circus if it wasn’t for you - Shriners.
The shows were thrilling, the weather was great, and our
concessions and the Carnival made this year’s Circus
truly spectacular. Thank you to our Divan and all the Clubs
and Units for making the Circus fun and memorable for
so many people.
As we wind down the Circus office for 2015, the Circus
Office Staff and Divan would like to thank you for all your
help and support in making this event a great success for
2015. We exceeded the exceptions for moneys raised
and made some fun improvements to the way we run our
Circus.
Please mark your calendars for the 2015 Circus Awards Banquet on September 11th at 6:30 P.M. in the Stu Lang
Activities Building and the 2016 Shrine Circus on April 14, 15, 16 and 17, 2016.
Remember, Clubs and Units Commission Deadline and final Circus reports are June 8, 2015. Finalize your additional
moneys and get them into the office for credit.
Thank you for all your support and help in putting on another great Shrine Circus.

News from Cincinnati
Specialty care beyond a burn
Cincinnati Shriners Hospital Pioneers
Research in Sleep Therapies
“I think sleep can be classified as
an essential nutrient,” said Michele
Gottschlich, Ph.D., clinical research
scientist, Shriners Hospitals for
Children® — Cincinnati. “It’s as vital
to health and recovery as proper
nourishment.” Dr. Gottschlich studies
the role of sleep in children recovering
from severe burns.
Healing touch is a noninvasive energy healing
therapy to enhance and
facilitate physical, emotional
and self-healing. Trained and
certified practitioners use
their hands in an intentional
way.
A pilot study at
Cincinnati Shriners Hospital
showed that healing touch was more effective than
sleep medication in reestablishing deep, restorative
sleep.
Shriners Play a Big Role in Referrals
When it comes to finding medical help for children,
Shriners are now more important than ever.
Members of the fraternity have always played a
critical role in helping families in their communities
get connected with Shriners Hospitals for Children
– Cincinnati, and now it has become even easier
with a website and referral cards.
Website
Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati
continues to make referring a patient and obtaining
an appointment for care easier than ever through
the www.shrinershospitalcincinnati.org website.
Every page has a Schedule an Appointment and
a Contact Us feature; both are easy forms that
families can complete and submit online directly to
the hospital.
Referral Cards
Referral cards are also a great resource that Nobles
can use. These cards allow families easy access
to hospital information and services. The cards
provide hospital contact information to assist in
scheduling appointments. On the back of each
card is space for the Shriner’s name and Temple.
Please stop by the Business Development office
to pick cards up, or call 513-872-6391 to have them
mailed to your Temple.
For a long time, not much was known about the link
between sleep and healing. Shriners Hospitals for
Children — Cincinnati is proud to be a pioneer in the
developing field of sleep medicine. We are committed
to helping our patients get the healing sleep they need
to recover as fully as possible and have healthy futures,
Gottschlich said.

Editor’s Notes
Fellow Nobles:
It’s been a very busy couple of months with parades, events and our 50th annual circus. We have
just a little bit of time to catch our breath before jumping back into more events and things to do.
Next month is our 2015 Spring Ceremonial. This is a great opportunity to welcome some wonderful
new Nobles to Egypt Shrine. It’s also a great time for those Nobles who have been missing for a
while to come on back and get a refresher on how much fun it is to be at the Shrine.
This is also the absolute best opportunity to show off our clubs and units to both new and old
Nobles. For those Nobles who have not decided on a club or unit, this is a great chance for you to
take another look at what each of them has to offer. I guarantee there is at least one club and/or
unit you would enjoy. Clubs and units are a major part of what keeps Egypt Shrine alive. There is
no better way to get active with the Shrine than by joining one of these.
Don’t forget Sunday May 10th is Mother’s Day. For everything your mother has done for you, do
all you can on this day (and every other day!) to let her know how much you love her.
Until next month, have a safe and wonderful May.
