About Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth:
Rationale:
As per the directions given by Mahatma Gandhi during the Indian
National Congress session held at Nagpur in 1920, Tilak Maharashtra
Vidyapeeth was established in 1921, as an educational memorial of
Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, “The father of the Indian unrest” and
an advocate of National Education. The establishment with the
Vidyapeeth was aimed towards imparting National Educational
conceived by Lokmanya Tilak in his four-fold formula.
TMV was awarded 'Deemed University' status by Government of
India in 1987 in recognition of its significant contribution in the field
of education. During the last 25 years, the Vidyapeeth has developed
significantly. Eventually the new faculties were formed in the fields of
Computer Science, Management, Education, Engineering, Health
Sciences, Law and Social Work. Today, the TMV offers various
courses through 12 Boards of Studies and having 27 departments.
TMV has achieved tremendous progress through quantitative
expansion and qualitative improvements on various academic fronts.
TMV is committed to maximize the knowledge and skills of students,
thus making them competent. The ethics of value –based education
system are strictly followed in the TMV to promote good character
building among the young generation.
To achieve minimum standard of living is one of the prime focus and
objective of the welfare state like India. In a recent time, various
developmental projects have been implemented in urban, rural and
tribal areas. Its aim is to achieve developmental goals of the country.
But the field realities show that the communities are not benefiting
from the so called development process. The large numbers of poor
people are affected due to developmental projects. Developmental
activities are carried out without considering welfare, livelihood and
rights of the weaker and marginalized sections of the society. This
process is leading to the exclusion of the weaker sections of the
society. Policy of the country is failed to make inclusion of the
excluded groups. In this context it is important to understand the
dynamics of the social exclusion.
The social exclusion is process where certain sections of the society
are systematically disadvantaged and discriminated on the basis of
their ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, caste, descent,
gender, age, disability, HIV status, migrant status or where they live.
The large number of Tribal, Dalits and Other Backward Communities,
Minorities and Differently Able are denied their basic rights. After the
six decades of independence, these communities are not being able to
achieve minimum standard of living, education, health and livelihood.
These communities excluded are from mainstream of the
development. A well-known economist Amartya Sen draws attention
to various dimensions of the concept of social exclusion,
distinguishing between a situation where some people are being kept
out, and where some people are being included on deeply unfavorable
terms, and described the two situations as 'unfavorable exclusion' and
'unfavorable inclusion'. 'Unfavorable inclusion' with unequal
treatment may bring on the same adverse effects as 'unfavorable
exclusion'. Though, the 11th five year plan taken various efforts for
Inclusion of the excluded sections but there is more to achieve for
mainstreaming marginalized group. In this context it is also important
to understand the issues of the exclusion in policy context.
Recent incidents of caste based atrocities of Kharda, Javkheda of
Ahmednagar district once again proved that how the so called
progressive states like Maharashtra is oppressive and neglecting the
incidences of the caste based atrocities. It has also proved that the
government is not more concerned about these issues therefore it high
time to discuss the issues of social exclusion and intervention
therewith. This is the wakeup call for social work professionals to
discuss and come out with some of the intervention strategies. In this
backdrop, Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Department of Social Work
is organizing a two day National Conference to highlight issues of the
social exclusion and discuss the strategies and core areas of
intervention of social inclusion by making the gathering of field
practitioners, academicians and research scholars.
