WELCOME
It’s that time again! PlatteCon has once again arrived and the Platteville Gaming
Association would like to welcome you to yet another convention. As with every year
we have a large selection of games ranging from tabletop games to console and
computer games. Additionally we are proud to bring you several special events, some of
which you will recognize and others which will be a new experience for PlatteCon
attendees.
We hope that this booklet will help you make plans for a fun and exciting weekend of
gaming, since it is our goal to provide you with all of the information that you need for
your stay here. Please feel free to contact us or ask any Platteville Gaming Association
members working at the Registration desk or throughout the convention if you have any
questions.
PlatteCon Staff XXVII
History
PlatteCon was founded in 1988 by the Platteville Gaming Association (PGA), due to a
lack of gaming conventions held in southwestern Wisconsin. The PGA wanted to provide
a venue where local area gamers could come and enjoy themselves, and spend time
with fellow gamers without having to travel many hours and miles out of their way.
From those ideals PlatteCon Alpha was born. It has been 27 years since PlatteCon Alpha
and the convention is still going strong. With each passing year, people come to
PlatteCon to participate in the multitudes of games being run, and to sit back and enjoy
anime amongst fellow fans. Role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons and Star Wars
D20, card games like Magic, Marvel Vs., and a multitude of minis games, like Star Wars
Miniatures and Dungeon are just a few of the many wonders one might find at this
year’s PlatteCon. It is our hope that each and every person who comes through the
doors of PlatteCon has a wonderful time and spreads the joys of gaming to each person
they meet.
PlatteCon Rules
The most important rule at PlatteCon XXVIII is to have fun and stay safe; as well as,
always wear your convention pass in a visible location. It is the only way to keep the
event fair and the price down. Staff will be patrolling the upper convention areas and
direct you to the Registration desk to purchase a pass if you lack one. Along with
denying admission to convention areas if you do not have a badge, all Game Masters are
prohibited from allowing you to play in any games associated with the convention. If
you are found playing without a badge somewhere on your person you will be asked to
either pay the admission price or be asked to leave. If you have lost your pass, please
bring your receipt and state your case to the Registration desk and we will more than
likely give you a new one. So, to make a long story short… get a Con pass, and display it
prominently at all times. Also we ask that all Con-goers treat one another, our guests,
and of course our vendors with the same respect you would want given to you and with
which they deserve.
3
Convention Center Rules
Since we are using the University’s resources to hold PlatteCon, they have their own
rules and regulations that they ask us to enforce. Most of these are common sense and
haven’t been a problem in the past, so let’s all work together to make sure no problems
occur this year.
Rule #1: No food from outside Ullsvik Hall can be brought in. This is so that any
contaminated products do not sicken individuals consuming them within the convention
center. Ullsvik Hall has a coffee shop on the first floor. There is only one exception to
this rule: if you bring a single-person meal, you and only you will eat it. Additional
information on the food and beverages that the Student Center provides can be seen in
the Good and Beverages section of this booklet.
Rule #2: Ullsvik Hall is a smoke-free facility. Smokers must remain 25 feet or more away
from the building entrances. There are smoker outposts near every entrance to drop
finished cigarettes in. Please be considerate of those coming and going through the
area, and keep smoking areas clean.
Rule #3: No materials can be taped or posted on any service. If you would like to
advertise a game session with a poster or similar promotional image, please consult the
Registration desk.
Registration
From the first floor lobby of Ullsvik Hall, you go up the stairs to the second floor. The
front desk will be located directly in front of the entrance to the convention location,
Velzy Commons. There you can register for the con, buy t-shirts, ask questions, etc….
Pick-Up Sessions
If you are running pick-up sessions, please find a table with an available time slot and
write your name and game on the schedule for that table. Every table in the convention
area will have a schedule on it. Then go to the Registration desk and add your session
and location to the Pick-Up Games Session Board.
PlatteCon Merchandise
As with prior years, people will be able to purchase the new PlatteCon T-shirts at the
Registration desk, while our supplies last. We have shirts for PlatteCon XXVII and some
discounted shirts from previous years.
4
Special Features
Door Prizes
When you receive your convention pass you will also receive a door prize ticket (or two
if you registered early). Please write your name legibly and then place it in the door
prize box at the registration desk. Approximately every session one or more tickets will
be drawn, and a staff member will be dispatched to find the person the ticket belonged
to who may then choose a prize. If you cannot be found you must claim your prize
within two hours or your claim to the prize is forfeit.
Silent Auction
PlatteCon offers a silent auction open to all attendees.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Bidding hours are from noon to 4:00pm on Saturday. If you want to sell an
item at the silent auction, see the silent auction desk worker before noon on
Saturday.
People participating in the silent auction will sign in at the silent auction desk
and give their name and a cell phone number to receive their auction number.
For each auction item there will be a silent auction item sheet with a place for
bids with auction numbers to be placed.
At the end of the bidding hours, the auction number with the highest bid will
win the item and will be expected to show up to the silent auction location
during the pick-up time (Saturday 4:00pm - 5:00pm) to pay for and receive
what they have won. People selling items in the silent auction should come to
the silent auction desk around that time as well.
After 5:00pm, unclaimed auction items will be moved to the front desk of the
convention. From there, auction winners can pay for and pick up their bought
items and sellers can arrive to either claim unsold items or collect money
acquired from their sold item until 9pm

Getting to a Game
This year the convention will be run in two-hour blocks. This system allows for greater
flexibility then our older system, by giving game masters the ability to schedule games
for as little as two hours, or up to six hours by using multiple two-hour block. There are
four two-hour on Friday and Sunday, and eight on Saturday. There will also be a 1 hour
break for dinner on Saturday at 4pm.
If you would like detailed information about a game, the Registration desk has a
description for all of the games that are being run at PlatteCon and will be happy to
provide you with additional information. Now that you know where all the information
is, let's say you want to register for a D&D game called “Forgotten Realms” with Mr.
GM. The Information Code might be 1-3:5.
