LOVING MEMORIES
Al Jones
He’s ninety-one years old. She’s eighty-seven. They’ve been married for
sixty-eight years. You would think that after sixty-eight years, that a fellow
would have his wedding anniversary etched into his brain, but sadly, no.
He’s forgotten it, again. In fact, it’s been about a dozen years since he last
took her out to celebrate their anniversary.
It’s kinda sad, really, to see someone who once looked forward to celebrating
a special day in their lives, no longer giving an effort to even acknowledging
that same special day. He no longer conspires with family and friends to
throw parties. He’s stopped roaming the malls and gift shops months in
advance in anticipation of presenting her with the perfect gift. There was a
time that the local flower shop owner knew him by name and greeted him
on a weekly basis. The new owner of the flower shop has never even met
him.
She thinks back to the earlier years, when they were younger, he would
constantly woo her. Not just on their anniversary, either, he took her out all
the time. But he really strived hard to ensure that anniversaries were
especially lavish. He made sure she knew, without the slightest bit of doubt,
that he would marry her all over again.

On their twenty-fifth anniversary, he threw a large party. He’d invited everyone that was at their wedding, as well as new friends they’d made. He went
big. Rented a hall, had a live band and even splurged for a fabulous meal. He
ended the evening by surprising her with a minister that had them renew
their marriage vows. He left no doubt in her mind that he’d marry her all over
again.
On their thirtieth anniversary, he took her on a three week cruise. They had
fine dining every evening and shopped the little shops each day when the ship
pulled into port. Two evenings before the cruise ended, he had the captain of
the ship accommodate the renewing of their wedding vows. Again, he left no
doubt in her mind that he’d marry her all over again.
For their fiftieth anniversary, he took her to Disneyland. He also paid for their
children and grandchildren to go on this trip with them. For an entire week,
they acted like teenagers. They rode rides, ate cotton candy, and he even won
her a large stuffed toy in the likeness of her favorite Disney character, Goofy.
On their final evening, he had Mickey Mouse stand in as his best man, while
Minnie Mouse stood in as her maid of honour as they again renewed their
wedding vows. After fifty years, he ensured that there was still no doubt that
he’d marry her all over again.
But that’s all in the past. Distant memories that she now brings forward in
her mind whenever she needs comforting. You see, about fourteen years ago,
he started forgetting things. At first, it was where he left his car keys or the
odd appointment. But as time went on, he’d struggle with names and places.
After a while, her once confident groom, became confused. Sometimes, he
would even panic as he couldn’t grasp where he was or how he came to be
there.
He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. There is no cure. He can’t be left alone
because he no longer has the capacity to look out for his own wellbeing. It
was almost cruel, to steal from a man so many fond memories that he worked
so hard to create. And it saddened her to know that he couldn’t call on those
memories to comfort him like she could.
At first, it bothered her, especially when he didn’t recognize her. But after
years of showering his affections on her, she knew what she must do. After
all, she’d gone through her wedding vows numerous times over the years, so
now was the time to act on the vows pledged.
On their sixtieth anniversary, she knew there would be no party. No surprise
trips or lavish gifts would be given. You see, folks, not only did he not
remember their anniversary that morning, he didn’t even know who she was.
So, for the past eight anniversaries, she’s made sure that she’s there when he
wakes up. She feeds him, takes him out, and showers him with her feminine
charms. Her goal? To have him propose to her all over again… she’s never
failed yet.
Despite the loss of precious memories, the love still remains… he’d marry her
all over again.

Do we have to disclose every little
thing that MAY be a defect if we’re
selling our home?
In Canada the seller has a legal obligation to
disclose only material latent defects, which
are defects that satisfy ALL THREE of the
following criteria:
• The defect is not visible or discoverable through a
reasonable inspection (a “latent defect”);
A:
• The defect is material (or fundamental) in that it may render
the property dan-gerous or potentially dangerous to
occupants or unfit for habitation. Examples include but are
not limited to the following: an engineer has determined that
the property is structurally unsound; the property is sitting on
contaminated soil; there is toxic mould in the property; and
• The defect is known to the seller. There is no legal
obligation to disclose defects that meet only one or two of
those criteria. Failing to disclose a material latent defect
could result in claims by the buyer, for rescission of the
contract; and damages against the seller and agents. In
common law, due to the principle of “caveat emptor” (LET
THE BUYER BEWARE) the seller is not required to disclose
defects that are visible or discoverable through a reasonable
inspection (a “patent defect”). However, the seller is not
allowed to conceal patent defects with the intention of hiding
them. This could be considered fraudulent.
This is just a quick overview of the VERY COMPLEX ISSUE of
disclosure of defects in the real estate transaction. A Real
Estate Professional should bring clarity, and provide you with
the appropriate advice. Of course, consulting your lawyer is
always a good idea .

Trying to be a good dad and spend some time with my son, I
used to pretend we were boxing. I would get into a fighter stance
and jab with both of my fists saying one-two one-two. That
all came to a rather abrupt end, when one day his teacher was
handing something out to his class, and asked my son, “would
you like one too?”
A fighter was taking a terrific beating. When the bell rang, he
staggered to his corner. His manager said, “Let him hit you
with his left for awhile. Your face is crooked.”

Polar Bear Fact Sheet
Polar bears live in the Arctic circle, the
region that contains the Arctic Ocean. The
polar bear is part of the animal family
Ursidae. What sets them apart from
many other bears is that they are skilled
swimmers and able to survive in frigid
climates.
Every fall female polar bears build what is
called a maternity den, a cave in which they
hibernate adn birth their young. On average,
a polar bear litter is about two cubs.
Polar bear fur is translucent (another word
for see-through) and as a result appears to
be white. However, as they grow older their
fur starts to yellow. Polar bears stay warm because of their blubber - a thick layer of fat.
As they are carnivores (meat eaters) their diet consists primarily of seals. Polar bears are
actually the largest land carnivore in the world.
The most pressing threat to the polar bear population is global warming. Due to the melting
of glaciers, much of the polar bear’s natural habitat is disappearing. There are under 25,000
polar bears left in the world.

1 cup butter or margarine, softened
¼ cup brown sugar, packed
¼ cup granulated sugar
½ cup corn syrup
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
3 cups all-purpose flour
½ tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
strawberry, raspberry or black currant jam or jelly
Directions:
Cream butter and both sugars well. Beat in corn syrup, eggs
and vanilla.
Mix in flour, baking powder and salt. Roll ⅛ inch thick on
lightly floured surface. Cut in 2¾ inch circles. Arrange on
greased cookie sheet.
Spread ½ tsp. jam on bottom circle leaving ⅜ inch around the

Before the age of three, my parents rushed me to the
hospital and we found out I had a severe peanut allergy.
I have gone 18 years with being extremely cautious of
what touches my lips however it has never been a
problem. I was always able to be around them, smell
them, touch them and the worst I would get was a headache. It was not until last Thursday evening when I found
out just how severe my allergy was. I was so excited to eat
an imported chocolate; I took one bite and instantly knew
I did not recognize the flavour. I swallowed the bite and
looked at my mom in a panic. Instantly I could feel
tingling in my throat and tongue. Luckily for me my
mother was at the desk checking emails and my father
was also in the room proof reading this week’s Scoop! My
mother took me to the local grocery store where we talked
to the pharmacist and purchased an epipen and some
Benadryl just in case. I immediately took the Benadryl
and could feel myself dozing off. We got home where my

mom requested I stay upstairs so she can keep her eye on
me, I collapsed onto the couch in exhaustion. This is
when the excruciating stomach pain started. I sat up and
excused myself to the bathroom where I was violently ill
for a couple minutes straight. It was this moment when I
looked at my mom and said “Can we go to the hospital?”
We hopped into the van and began our journey. We made
it about two blocks when my throat was nearly obstructed. I pointed to the epipen and my mother pulled over and
administered the pen. Before we got onto the highway she
asked me if I was feeling better. I replied with a confident
yes. However the one thing I did not realize was I was so
focused on the excruciating pain in my stomach that it
did not cross my mind how hard it was to breathe
because I could not FEEL it. We arrived at the hospital
where we sat in emergency for a very short time and I was
rushed into “the code room” the nurse acted very fast to
get me hooked up to an IV and an epinephrine drip going.
While she was giving us a lecture for not calling 911, I

was trying to fall asleep to stop the pain but every time I
closed my eyes it felt as if I was falling off of a cliff, and
right before I would hit the ground she would say something or ask me a question that would wake me up in a
panic. The outcome was positive, here I am typing this
out. After a few drug cocktails, the swelling of my tongue
and throat went away and the pain in my stomach was
bearable. We were then prescribed another epipen and
some medicines to help keep the reaction away so I did
not relapse. I can tell you one thing... When a doctor looks
you in the eyes and says “you were close to dead” that
echoes in your mind the next time you look at food. This
was a very close call for me, and I want to state lessons I
have learned.
To the people out there with allergies, or to the parents
and friends of someone with allergies, please keep in
mind. An allergy is nothing to be embarrassed about. It is
something you cannot control and it goes from a tingling
throat to a death bed very fast. In my situation I dragged
it out because of media, my entire life I have seen allergic
reactions on TV and I figured it wasn’t like that therefore
I was probably going to be fine. Do NOT let media hold

you back from getting looked at by a doctor. If your body
is telling you something is not right, GET HELP! It is
better to go to the hospital and come out with a false
alarm, then to wait it out and be near to dead when you
arrive. Also, it is an allergy; please do not treat people
with allergies like they are different. Part of the reason I
never told people was because all through school people
would make such a big deal about it and every time it was
brought up I would get extremely embarrassed because it
made me different and people would ask questions and I
did not want to be looked at like I was “broken.” You’re
not broken, and this is not your fault, you were born this
way. Embrace it! Finally... the most important lesson I
learned from this... CALL 911!!!!!!!!!!
I survived this terrifying event, and I cannot be more
grateful for my mother and her being able to set aside her
panic to get the epipen into my system and to get me help
right away. I also cannot thank the nurse at the hospital
enough; she saved my life and acted beyond fast to do so.
She also taught me very valuable lessons and sent me
home with printed off information about my allergy. You
do not realize how much life means until it is almost
taken away from you.

live theatre production of The Vagina Monologues, which was written by Eve
Ensler. Eve is the Tony award winning playwrite, performer, activist and
founder of VDAY. V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against
women and girls. The stats say 1 in 4 females are abused, have been abused
or are going to be abused. Stop the Silence …. Break the Chain ….
When Miss Dani Polsom (a.k.a. Arizona’s Voice) and Helene Nicholson took
the microphones to share their stories, the audience was very quiet, minus
the sniffles you would hear.
Dani is known in Airdrie for taking on the PC government and having changes
made to the judicial system so that no charges against a child can be thrown
from the court system. Being abused for over 7 years as a young girl and then
having the whole case thrown from the system was devastating. Listening to

I returned to my parents’ home to attend a funeral. At the
temple, my mother led me to a man who looked vaguely
familiar.
“Barbara, remember Rabbi Green?” she asked as she left
me in his company.
I frantically tried to place him, and suddenly it came to
me.
He was the kind man who, five years earlier, had officiated at my grandmother’s funeral.
“It’s good to see you again, Rabbi,” I said. “Though I wish

Income Tax Program to prepare taxes
for North Rocky View families, singles,

Starting on February 4, 2015, an
Intake staff member will be in Irricana
at the Town Office on the first and
third Wednesday of each month
from 9:00am-12:00pm. Residents in
need of assistance with government
applications, referrals to community
services and/or access to Community
Links programming, including Parent
Consultations, Domestic Violence
supports, Counselling and Seniors
Services, can receive information from
the Intake staff.
Intake services can be provided in
person or by calling 403-620-0778.
Drop-in appointments are based on a
first come, first served basis.
