The Legends Continue

I had the honour of meeting some legends last week, folks. I can honestly say, for
once, I was actually star struck.
One of the ‘coolest’ things (do kids still say ‘cool’?) about what I do for a living is all
the incredible people I get to meet. I’ve met rock stars, celebrated authors,
politicians at all levels of government, television personalities, and movie stars.
Although, very cool, none have left me actually awestruck.
I got a call last week from Adrian Pruden. He’s a local ‘good guy’ with the Airdrie
Oilmen’s Association. The Oilmen were putting on a ‘White Collar Boxing’ fundraiser in support of the Airdrie Food Bank, Community Links, and Stop Bullying
that features boxers representing law enforcement officers going up against boxers
that work in the oil industry. I tell him I don’t have my tickets yet and he tells me
he is delivering them to my office.
A few hours later, Adrian pulls up in front of my office. Looking out the window, I
can see he’s brought an entourage with him. As they pour out of their vehicles, I
am awestruck. Out comes five-time Canadian boxing champ, George Chuvalo. In
his entire career, he was never knocked down or knocked out. He went toe to toe
full rounds twice with Muhammad Ali. “He’s the toughest guy I ever fought,” said
Ali of Chuvalo after the fight. From the other side of the vehicle, out comes Fitz ‘The

get any better, a story writer’s dream steps out… Marvin ‘The
Weasal’ Elkind. I say a story writer’s dream because, not only
was this guy Muhammad Ali’s personal driver, but he also
drove for the legendary Jimmy Hoffa. The conversations he
must have overheard throughout his career and the people he
must have encountered would surely fill several books.
For the next hour, they oblige me with some photos and stories
of yesteryear. I will no doubt, use them for fodder in future
writings. George answers questions he’s probably been asked
a thousand times before. He’s soft spoken for a man whose
fame is tied to a sport considered by some to be violent. When
speaking of opponents he’s faced, he’s respectful. It is easy to
see why he, himself, is held in such high regard by the likes of
Joe Frazier and George Forman, and despite an absence from
the ring of over forty years, he is still loved everywhere he goes.
Fitz is passionate about his representation of the Anti-Bullying
cause he speaks for. Still in his forty’s, he maintains an active
presence in the boxing world and even trains others at his gym
in Waterloo, Ontario. You would expect a man still considered
to be at the top of the boxing world to be a little cocky… maybe
even a little obnoxious. But he is quite humble, choosing to
speak more about his anti-bullying message than his own
incredible successes.
Marvin is a character like no other. I remember seeing Danny
DeVito play him in a movie. I can honestly say that, despite
Danny DeVito’s performance as ‘The Weasel’, the movie did not
depict just how colourful the real ‘Weasel’ truly is. In our short
chat, he was able to give me some insight into the world of
mobsters that left me wanting for more. I couldn’t resist asking
him the one question that I’m sure everyone asks. “Mr.
Elkind… do you know where Jimmy Hoffa’s body is?”
He smiles and looks me in the eye as he says, “In the foundation of the Renaissance Hotel in Detroit, Michigan.”
So, how is it that I can talk to a politician or rock star without
looking like a star struck groupie, yet dang near step on my
tongue when speaking with three fellas of yesteryear glory?
I think it’s the same reason everyone else admires them. The
one thing I found common between these three men was that
they never spoke poorly of former adversaries or colleagues...
whenever asked about someone else, the answers were always
respectful and positive. They didn’t embellish their own accomplishments, but rather chose to speak of the accomplishments
of others. They are humble men with hearts that they wear on
their sleeves. It’s no wonder they continue to be loved, not only
by Canadians, but by those from around the world.

What happens in a real estate transaction when the lender does not fund
the mortgage on time?
Great question! The answer depends on a number of factors including:
1. Did the seller perform their obligations as far as delivery of a transfer of land and real property report with compliance on a timely basis?
2. Did the buyer meet all of their remaining obligations, including putting up their cash injection (from their own resources or bridge financing),
obtaining insurance and fulfilling all of their mortgage conditions?
3. Is the seller accommodating or not?
Depending on the answers to these questions, the consequences could be as minimal as a late interest penalty to be paid to the seller (either the
same interest saved on the mortgage advance or a penalty of the prime rate plus 3%), or as severe as the termination of the contract by the seller.
Somewhere in between these 2 extremes is also the possibility of the buyer not getting possession of the home until the lender forwards the
funds.

These Chocolate Egg Nest Cookies are so cute and delicious!

Ingredients:

I used Cadburry chocolate eggs, but you can also
use M&Ms or Jelly Beans.
Peeps if making bigger nests in the large muffin
pan.
Directions:
In a large microwave safe bowl, melt chocolate chips and butterscotch chips
together in microwave, stirring every 30 seconds.
Stir in chow mien noodles.
Spray muffin tins lightly with cooking spray.
Drop by spoonfuls into a greased muffin tin and
mold into nest shapes. If you are making the
larger nests to fit a peep inside, mold into large
greased muffin tins.
Let set. You can also place in the refrigerator to
help them set up quicker.
Place eggs and/or peeps on top.

will support you and block out the
haters’ comments because there
is nothing worse than failing and
hearing, “I told you so.” Instead,
you want to hear, “Tomorrow is a
new day.”
It is an amazing thing to learn
from other people’s mistakes,
but please keep in mind that a
mistake in their life could be your
future success. Just because it
was a wrong path for them, does
not mean it will be wrong for you.
Each person differs, with hobbies,
passions, pet peeves, emotions,
coping skills, love, career choices,
and so much more! Do not let the
words of one single person change
the path you are taking. Hear
what they have to say and you
can either choose to let it motivate
you, or break you.
At the end of the day, if your
decision makes you smile, you
made the right choice. Your smile
is on your face, not anyone else’s...
let your smile change the world;

Volunteer Income Tax Program
Community Links will, once again, be
offering a Community Volunteer
Income Tax Program to prepare taxes
for North Rocky View families, singles,
persons with disabilities and seniors.
Certain income restrictions apply and
only simple, straight-forward tax
returns are considered.
This program is a partnership between
Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and
Community Links. Volunteers are
trained through CRA and will be
on-hand all day on Wednesdays
during March and April.
The program can also do taxes for
past years. Often people who have a
zero income do not file a return and
therefore may miss out on child benefit
payments or GST exemptions which
they may be entitled to.
