Robert Byrne of the Garfield Heights Detective Unit said three people are facing theft charges after being accused of stealing over $35,000 from an elderly woman in Garfield Heights. Byrne said Carl Fletcher, 56, of Cleveland; Renata Deventenno, 59, of Euclid; and Richard Smith, 58, of Cleveland Heights, were posing as bank investors and told the woman that money she had in the bank was counterfeit. Byrne said they also told her they needed her help in catching the person responsible. Byrne said Smith gained her trust by talking to her over the phone, and the three conned the woman into withdrawing her money from Third Federal Savings and Loan four times between January 12 and January 15. Deventenno and Fletcher would meet with the woman outside the bank or at her house to collect the money for "testing" to determine if it was real, according to police. WANT TO BUY COMMERCIAL PROPERTY •An employee of B Fashion Plus on East 71st St. told police the business was broken into on February 25, around 10 p.m., and the cash register had been stolen. The victim said he locked the front door at 10 p.m. and about five minutes later found the glass had been smashed out and the register missing. He reported approximately $100 was in the register. The Detective Bureau was called to follow up. Letter to the Editor COMMERCIAL PROPERTY Keep city sidewalks clear To all residents of Maple Heights, The school year is still here and so is the snow. I can't begin to say how many children I have seen walking from or to school that are walking in the streets due to the sidewalks being covered in snow/ ice. I hope and pray that those children walking in the streets get to school and back home safely without any close calls of being nearly hit (or worse). RENT STOREFRONT RENT HOUSE RENT STOREFRONT I can't speak to residents outside of Maple Heights, but I do know for a fact the city of Maple Heights does have an Ordinance (660.05) that requires homeowners/tenants to keep their sidewalks cleared of snow and ice as well as other debris. Look it up for yourself and see for further requirements under the ordinance. It seems that people will take their time to make sure they can drive their car in and out of their driveway, but won't take the extra time to ensure that their sidewalks are safe to walk on. I can attest that I constantly see children walking in the streets due to the sidewalks being impassable. I can only hope that the residents will help in keeping the children safe by taking their time to clear their sidewalks.
