Welcome to the Berkeley Reporter. We will
print monthly and mail to every home in Holiday
City Berkeley. Most of the articles and images are
submitted by residents of Holiday City.
As of September 22, Holiday City Berkeley First Aid
Squad will be going to a 5 day work week. Our
schedule will be Monday thru Friday 7 AM - 7 PM.
Each month we may include a photo article by
Kirms Photography and/or some images from a local
photographer. If you’d like to be considered as a
“Photographer Of The Month” simply email a short
bio of yourself and 4-5 images to:
[email protected].
Images should be about 3000 pixels on the long
side. Send an email if you have any questions about
being our photographer of the month.
The night shift and weekends will be covered by the
same squad that does our night shift now, Tri-Boro
First Aid. They are a paid squad and as always they
charge for their services. We have been promised

The Blizzard of 2015 - Moving On To Spring!!!
Not as bad as predicted, but who cares. WE DO!!
No outages, thank goodness, none that I heard about. I believe each Municipality had
various amounts of snow and some roads cleared better than others. Very unusual. New York
and New Jersey imposing a travel ban, as well as a penalty. Good going all - for our benefit.
GLAD WE’RE DONE.

The word “March” comes from
the Roman “Martins”. This was originally the first month of the Roman Calendar was named
after Mars, the God of War. March was the beginning of
our Calendar Year we changed to the Gregorian Calendar
in 1752, and it is only since then when the Year began on
January 1st.
MARCH 1st - ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATON
was announced by Congress. The Articles remained in effect through the Revolutionary War until 1789, when the
current U.S. Constitution was adopted.
MARCH 1st - NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER

MARCH 3rd - NATIONAL ANTHEM DAY STAR SPANGLED BANNER - was written during the
Revolutionary War. It was actually written during the War
of 1812. There is a misconception about the date -some
assume that National Anthem Day is September 14th ,
the day the song was written. This is incorrect. National
Anthem Day is every March 3rd , in Celebration of the
day that Congress made the Star Spangled Banner our
National Anthem.
MARCH 6th - BOSSES DAY - Then it’s only fair, that
the Employee gets a day in their honor. Is it a coincidence
that Employee Appreciation Day and Bosses Day are 6
months apart?? I for one have been blessed with the most
wonderful Boss anyone could ever have.
MARCH 8th - DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS - We set our clocks one hour ahead. Don’t forget.
MARCH 12th - GIRL SCOUT DAY - Juliette Gordon Low started the first Girl Scout Group in Savannah,
Georgia with 18 girls. The Girls Scouts became a National
Organization and was chartered by the US Congress on
March 16th , 1950. Today, there are millions of girls involved with Girl Scouts.
MARCH 15th - This date was the “Ides of March” in
the Roman Calendar. This meant it was the day on which
the Month was divided into two equal parts.

MARCH 17th - ST. PATRICK’S DAY - In honor
of the Patron Saint of Ireland who brought Christianity to
the Emerald Isles, as Ireland is known. It is truly a day of
Celebrating Irish History, Ancestry, Tradition and Customs.
If you haven’t been to Ireland, plan a trip. It is a beautiful
Country.
MARCH 19th - ST. JOSEPH’S DAY - and we will
all enjoy those Pastries. It is also the Birthday of one of
my dearest friends. You know who you are.
MARCH 21st - INTERNATIONAL EARTH DAY
- ALSO KNOWN AS SUN-EARTH DAY - was founded
by John McConnell in 1969. The purpose to make Earth
inhabitants aware of their responsibility to care for the
Planet. This includes environment and natural resources.
MARCH 26th - ANNIVERSARY of the FIRST
DAILY WEATHER FORECAST - Why do they call a
Weather Man a Weather Man - because they don’t know
Weather it Will or Weather it Won’t - after the Blizzard
of 2015.
MARCH 29th - Coca-Cola was introduced on this
date 1886.
MARCH 31st -The Eiffel Tower in Paris was officially
opened in 1889.
March seems like a pretty long Month, and a lot

Winter Has Arrived; Be Prepared
Prepare now to take the sting out of winter weather;
here are some things you can do to get ready:
• Store drinking water, first aid kit, canned/no-cook food,
non-electric can opener, radio, flashlight and extra batteries where you can get them easily, even in the dark.
• Keep cars and other vehicles fueled and in good repair,
with a winter emergency kit in each.
• Get a NOAA Weather Radio to monitor severe weather.
• Know ahead of time what you should do to help elderly
or disabled friends, neighbors or employees.
• Winterize your house, barn, shed or any other structure
that may provide shelter for your family, neighbors,
livestock or equipment. Install storm shutters, doors
and windows; clear rain gutters; repair roof leaks; and
check the structural ability of the roof to sustain unusually heavy weight from the accumulation of snow - or
water, if drains on flat roofs do not work.
• Also remember that dressing in layers is important when
the temperatures drop. Experts recommend wearing
several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm
clothing rather than one layer of heavy clothing. Outer
garments should be tightly woven and water-repellent.
Mittens are warmer than gloves. Wear a hat. Cover
your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs from
extremely cold air. Wear sturdy, waterproof boots in
snow or flooding conditions.
• And remember that if you lose your power and are using
kerosene heaters make sure you maintain ventilation to
avoid a build-up of toxic fumes. Keep heaters at least
three feet from flammable objects and refuel kerosene
heaters outside.

The next meeting of Silver/Holiday V.F.W. Post 10185
will be held on Thursday, March 19th at 1:00 pm at Silver
Ridge Park West Clubhouse at 145 Westbrook Drive, Silver
Ridge. We hold our meetings on the third Thursday of every
month. We meet in the day time so you don't have to worry
about driving at night. To join our post just bring a copy of
your Discharge (DD-214) to our meeting and you will be
signed up right away. You'll receive a hardy welcome and
refreshments before the meeting. You will have a chance
to talk to fellow veterans and make new friends. For more

On Sunday, March 8th Day Light Savings time begins.
On Wednesday, March 11th at 1:00 pm the executive
board of V.F.W. Post 10185 will meet in Room #1 at Holiday City South Clubhouse, 139 Santiago Drive.

On Friday, March 20th Spring begins. Put your snow
shovel away and get out your grass seeds.

District 12's meeting at V.F.W. Post 9503 at 383 Veterans Blvd., Bayville where the latest V.F.W. events and
programs will be discussed. Also nominations for 20152016 officers to guide District 12 in the coming year will
be held. The host of this meeting is Whiting Memorial
Post 8745. Any other post member wishing to attend this

Sunday, March 29th is Palm Sunday.
The Military Order of the Cootie is looking for new
members. The cooties are called "The Fun Group" of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars. All the members of our post are

Medicine: Do We Have the Right to Force a 17 Year
Old Chemotherapy Treatment?

At this writing, a 17 year old young lady is in a Connecticut children's hospital undergoing chemotherapy for
Hodgkin's lymphoma. With it, her doctors say she has an 80
percent chance of survival, without it she will die within 2
years. But Cassandra - whose last name we cannot write because she is a minor, doesn't want the chemotherapy, which
she calls poison to her body. When her mother supported
her decision, the state's Department of Children's Services
(DCF) accused her of neglect and took Cassandra into custody. This experience has been a continuous nightmare. A
group of shouting cops came to her house and took her to
a hospital, where she was kept under constant surveillance
for six weeks. Last month she was strapped to the bed and
sedated. When she woke up there was a chemotherapy port
implanted in her chest. Cassandra's states, she cares about
her quality of health, not quantity. This is her body and her
life. This is not an isolated case of intrusive medical overreach. A growing number of mostly teenagers have been
mandated by government to undergo aggressive treatments
despite "personal, religious or philosophical objections".
Chemotherapy is, in fact poisons and fails to save patients
at least 20 percent of the time. No patient should be forced
to accept its brutal side effects without his or her informed
consent and no parent should lose custody to overzealous
medical professional's intent on forcing unwanted treatments that aren't guaranteed to work.
Cassandra's refusal isn't based on ethical or religious
objections. She is refusing chemo because she hates the way
it could make her feel and look. She is not looking forward
to feeling nauseated, tired and bald. At 17, Cassandra is
still a teenager, a group not known for always making good
decisions. But her decision in 8 months when she turns
18 is a game changer. It is a little too late in September
to change what is going on right now but the minute she
turns 18 she is an adult and can make her own decisions.
Many of you who are reading this article have already
or are currently going through chemotherapy. Is it worth
the day to day feeling sick, tired and ugly? Do we have the
right to insist and then drug a 17 year old so ports can be
put in knowing this human being just wanted along with
her mother to look into alternate methods? What have we

How children perceive their grandparents.
She was in the bathroom, putting on her makeup under
the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter, as she has
done many times before. After she applied her lipstick
and started to leave, the little one said “but Grandma, you
forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye” I will probably
never put on lipstick again, without thinking about kissing
the toilet paper good-bye.
My young grandson called the other day to wish me
a Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was and I told
him 80. My grandson was quiet for a moment and then he
asked “Grandma, Did you start at 1”?
After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother
changed into her old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting
more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally she threw a towel around her wet head and stormed
into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three year old say
with a trembling voice, “WHO WAS THAT”?
A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter
what her own childhood was like. We used to skate outside
on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from
a tree in our front yard. We rode a pony. We picked wild
raspberries in the woods. The little girl was wide eyed,
taking this all in, finally she said “I sure wish I had gotten
to know you sooner”.
My grandson was visiting one day when he asked,
“Grandma do you know how you and God are alike? I
mentally polished my halo” and I said “No, how are we
alike? He responded well you are both very old!”
A little girl was diligently pounding away on her
grandfather’s word processor. She told him she was writing a story. He responded, what is it about? I don’t know
she stated, I can’t read.

I didn’t know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something
and ask her what color it was. She would tell me the color
and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued.
At last she headed for the door saying, grandma, I think
you should try to figure out some of these colors yourself.
When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation
cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep
from attracting pesky insects. Still a few fireflies followed
us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, it’s no
use grandpa. Now the mosquitoes are coming after us with
flashlights.
When my grandson asked me how old I was. I teasingly
replied, “I am not sure, look in your underwear”, Grandpa,
He advised me, mine says I am 4-6.
A second grader came home from school and announced to her grandmother, Grandma Guess what? We
learned how to make babies today in school. The grandmother was a little more than surprised but tried to keep
her cool. That’s interesting she said, how do you make
babies? It’s simple she said you just change the y to i and
add es (ie. Baby-Babies).
Children’s logic. Give me a sentence about a public
servant said the teacher. The small boy wrote. The fireman
came down the ladder pregnant. The teacher took the lad
aside to correct him. Don’t you know what pregnant means
she asked? Sure he stated, it means carrying a child!
A grandfather was delivering his grandchildren to their
home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the
front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog’s duties. They use him to

A priest offered a nun a ride. She got in the car and
crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg. The
priest nearly had an accident. After controlling the car,
he stealthy slid his hand up her leg. The nun said “Father
remember Psalm 129? The priest removed his hand. But
changing gears he let his hand slide up her leg again. The
nun once again responded, Father Psalm 129. The priest
apologized, “sorry sister but the flesh is weak”. Arriving
at the convent, the nun sighed heavily and went on her
way. On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look
up Psalm 129. It said “Go forth and seek, further up, you
will find the glory”. Moral of the story, if you are not well
informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity.
A barber gave a haircut to a priest. The priest tried to
pay for the haircut, but the barber refused saying “you do
God’s work”. The next morning the barber found a dozen
bibles at the door to his shop. A policeman came into the
barber for a haircut, and again the barber refused to pay
saying “you protect the public”. The next morning the
barber found a dozen doughnuts at the door to his shop. A
lawyer came into the shop for a haircut and again the barber
refused payment saying, “you serve the justice system.”
The next morning the barber found a dozen lawyers waiting for a free haircut.
A large group of Isis fighters are moving down a road
when they hear a voice call from behind a sand dune - One
Marine is better than 10 Isis fighters. The Isis commander
quickly orders 10 of his best men over the dune where a
gun battle breaks out and continues for a few minutes, then
silence. The voice once again calls out “One marine is better
than 100 Isis SOB’s. Furious, the Isis Commander sends
his next best 100 troops over the dune and instantly a huge
gun fight commences. After 10 minutes of battle, silence
again. The voice calls out One Marine is better than 1000
Isis fighters. The enraged Isis commander musters 1000
fighters and sends them to the other side of the dune. Rifle
fire, machine guns, grenades, rockets and cannon firering
out as a terrible fight is fought...then silence. Eventually
one badly wounded Isis fighter crawls back over the dunes
and with his dying words he tells his commander, “Don’t
send any more men...it’s a trap, there are two of them”.

Gaffa Riding A Tale from Corrin’s Story

Early autumn had arrived in the northern hemisphere
of New Caledonia. This meant a few things. For one, it
was never a good time to venture outside of the controlled
climate of ‘The Keep.’ Although it was still a few months
before what they called “full-on winter” here, extremely
cold weather was always in season. I had only gone outside
of the Keep once before. The weather conditions were best
described as ‘sub-frigid,’ no matter what the time of year.
Personally, I thought it was colder than deep space out of
the Keep, even in the middle of summer. My cousin Savin
said that was because I had grown up on a very warm
planet; thus I felt the cold much more. He could be right.
Yet, I still missed the feel of the wind upon my face
or splashing through puddles left behind by a sudden rain
storm. On rare occasions it actually snowed on Capaetia.
My friends and I had a great time rolling in it and forming
balls to pelt one another with. We thought we were frozen to
bits afterwards. But the snow was usually gone in a couple
of hours or so, and we warmed ourselves by the cook’s fire.
I made the big mistake of remarking to my friend Brennen, that I had been stuck inside the protective atmosphere
of the Keep for so long that I felt trapped; just like a small
bug caught inside a piece of yellow crystal. I compounded
my folly by letting him arrange for a trip outside, on our
next mutual free day. True to his word, he signed us up to
go Gaffa riding.
Gaffas are massive, extremely woolly and shaggy,
native herd animals. They had been domesticated by the
planet’s earliest settlers. They were first trained to help pull
heavy loads during the building of the original Keep. Later,
they were also trained to be used for riding into the frozen
wasteland. Why anyone would want to do so is a mystery
to me. Gaffas are reported to be quite dumb. But before
we humans appeared, even they must have migrated south
in early autumn. Today Gaffas are seldom taken outside
for more than an hour in full-on Winter, if then. A special
habitat had been built long ago to protect them from the
deadly winters above Caledon Keep.
Brennen and I arrived at the stables and suited up in
multiple layers of encounter gear. I wondered how we
would be able to ride a gaffa when we could barely walk in
our protective suits. There were 10 of us who had actually
paid to take this mid-autumn treck into the frozen vastness.
We stood and listened attentively as one of our guides gave
us some instructions. A hoist would be used to place us in
the saddle. We were shown how to use the reigns to guide
the animals and how to speak to each other through our
helmet’s comm system.
There were also important rules which must be strictly
obeyed, during our ride outside. As I listened, I became
increasing convinced that this was a very bad idea. I wasn’t
alone in this. One of the riders saw the process of being
hoisted onto to a gaffa, and said “no thanks.” He departed
quite quickly.
Nine of us were soon settled onto our gaffas and rode
out of the Keep, accompanied by our three guides. Our
party hadn’t traveled more than a few 100 meters when
for some reason one of the gaffas spooked. It slammed
into another gaffa, knocking off both riders in the process.
The two gaffas abruptly turned and plodded back in the
direction of the stable. This left their passengers to return
on foot with one of the guides leading the way. (Perhaps
the gaffas weren’t so dumb after all.)
We hadn’t traveled on much farther when a fierce
wind kicked up. It blew snow and ice granules up from
the ground and swirled them all around us. Everything
became a white blur. I couldn’t even see Brennen, who
was riding right next to me. The cold seemed to emanate
from the planet’s surface. It possessed everything. Like
an ill begotten mist, it seeped into every object it touched.
Despite the encounter gear, I was really feeling the cold.
In fact my insides were shaking from it.
If the penetrating cold, howling wind and lack of
visibility were not bad enough, every muscle in my body
ached just from the effort to stay astride the beast beneath
me. It must have read my thoughts. As if on cue, the gaffa
started to make a low, groaning sound deep in its throat.
Then it began to rock from side to side as it trudged along,
groaning louder with each step.
“Brennen, my gaffa and I have had enough of this,” I
said over the comm link. “I’m going back!”
“You cannot do that,” said the guide in charge. “Everyone was told before we left, that we must all stay together
or you may become hopelessly lost. The only reason that
the riders that fell off their rides were able to return to the
stables was for two reasons. We were still close to the Keep
and they went back with a guide.” (I had wondered how
the heck they would manage to get back on the gaffas.)
“I might get lost, but I doubt this gaffa will,” Just listen;
it’s making all sorts of noises. Bet you if I give this animal
its head, the two of us will be back at the Keep in no time.
I am just about frozen to the saddle and besides, we cannot
see any farther than thirty centimeters in any direction!”
Some of the other riders had also had enough. Our
guides tried to assure us that this was just a passing squall.
But there was such dissention between riders that at last

the guides decided to split us into two groups. Brennen
continued on with the guide and one other rider, while I
went with the group that headed back. I swear that I heard
sounds, something like purrs of pleasure, coming from my
gaffa. They started as soon as we turned them back toward
the Keep. It was amazing how much faster the gaffas
moved when they were headed home. They got us back
to the stable, just as I had predicted, in a very short time.
The so called squall turned out to be an early autumn
blizzard. One of the animals from Brennan’s group came
back without a rider, shortly after we did. It took the last
of the riders more than an hour longer to finally return to
the stable.
The guide’s gaffa came in carrying an extra person.
Although at first, no one could tell where the riders ended
and the gaffa began. The last rider entered right behind
the guide. They all looked like walking heaps of frozen
snow, rather than living beings. We all worked together to
remove the ice and snow from the riders and the animals.
The riders were eventually freed and hoisted off the gaffas.
When Brennen finally got down, he looked even colder than
I had been. (Of course he’d never admit that to me.) The
guide, Brennen, and the other rider were put into Thermotic
Chambers to gradually raise their body temperatures back
to normal. I left Brennen there to thaw out, and headed off
to “The Baths” to warm myself in a mineral pool.
Of the nine riders who journeyed out that day, only two
lasted beyond an hour; the third one of them was a guide.
Suffice to say...it was a complete fiasco. The experience
did help me in one way. Even though I still longed to feel
the warmth of the sun on my face and the wind in my hair,
I no longer felt trapped. Instead, I thought of myself as a
little bird in a safe and secure nest...a nice warm one!

This Mexico City Theme park eschews typical amusement
for giving kids ages 4-14 the chance to role play various careers in a lavishly realized, scaled down world. Youngsters
can work on an assembly car line, ring up purchases behind
a super market counter, peer inside a dummy’s mouth for
cavities and put out fake fires. There are even kids with
clipboards acting as insurance agents, taking inventory of
a staged accident. It is here that kids can earn a salary in
“kidzos” and though they are required to pay a 20 percent

Japan’s supersize French fry shortage
Just last month, December 2014, Japan had a problem
with their McDonald’s locations, due to a shortage of
French fries. So that everyone got fries, they were limiting
orders to just a small fry. In all 3,000 locations due to labor
disputes, Japans fast food hot spot lost major business. The
disputes were taking place between dockworkers and shipping lines in the United States. To prevent an all-out panic,

1,600 tones to come via ports on the east Coast. However
the second shipment was not delivered until January 2015,

A less economical world forum
The World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland has

Converting stores into server farms
The internet is moving to a shopping center near you.
As retailers struggle to keep up with online shopping,
data center companies have begun converting vacant mall
shops and bib box stores into server farms. In Fort Wayne,
Indiana, a vacant Target store will soon be home to rows of
computer servers while in Jackson, Mississippi, a former
McRae’s department store will get the same treatment next
year. Smaller scale date companies say former big box
stores are ideal for housing equipment because of the building’s open plan layout, ability to withstand bad weather
and lack of windows. An added bonus? The sheer mount
of distressed retail properties still available five years after
the recession. Who else wants them?
You know the credit market is tight when even Ben
Bernanke can’t refinance his mortgage. The former Fed
chair revealed at a conference last month that he was recently turned down for a new home loan. When the audience laughed, Bernanke’s application likely failed because
most of his income comes from 1099 sources rather than
W2’s. Never mind that these are very large 1099’s - he get
at least $200,000 .00 per speech. But his inability to refinance still isn’t a huge surprise. Mortgage availability has
recently been on the rise but credit remains much tighter
than it was pre-crisis, thanks to tougher standards enacted
in response to housing boom abuses.
Mystery buyer hoards copper
Someone is sitting on a huge cache of copper. A single
buyer has snapped up more than half the copper held in
London Metal Exchange warehouses - enough to build
1,700 Statues of Liberty. The $850 million stash gives the
buyer control over a crucial source of the global copper
supply. While the London Exchange doesn’t identify the
owners of metals, traders and brokers point fingers at Red
Kite Group, a London hedge fund focused on metals trading. The warehouse supply is just a fraction of 1 percent
of the overall global copper supply, but any sign of hoarding in the closely watched exchange spooks traders, since

BLOOD TEST FOR CANCER RISK
Researchers have discovered that a person’s risk for
developing blood cancer can be determined with a simple
blood test. The discovery established by two international
research teams working separately could potentially lead
toward early detection and even prevention of leukemia,
lymphoma and other fatal diseases. The two teams collectively analyzed the genes of almost 29,000 people. They
found that those who had mutations in three specific genes
were 10 times more likely to develop blood cancer within
five years. While the mutations were rare in people under
40, they found in 10 percent of people over the age of 65
and almost a fifth of those older than 90. Someday stated
a physician from Harvard those who test positive for the
mutations could be a population for clinical trials of future
prevention strategies.
WHY HIV IS WEAKENING
HIV is becoming weaker. That’s the encouraging conclusion from a major new study, which has established that
the deadly virus is gradually making it less likely to cause
Aid’s. Oxford University scientists analyzed the blood of
2,000 HIV positive women in Botswana and South Africa.
They found that in Botswana, which has been struggling
with the epidemic for a decade longer than South Africa
had the virus was much less infectious with a diminished
ability to replicate in the body. The cause of this decline is
that when the virus encounters an immune system with a
strong genetic resistance to HIV, it has to adapt and become
less aggressive so as not to be wiped out - but at the price
of giving up some of its ability to replicate quickly. Over
time as HIV continues to evolve to evade strong immune
systems, the weaker it ultimately becomes. The research
team also found that because anti-retroviral drugs target the
most virulent forms of HIV they essentially encourage the
milder ones to survive - further diluting the virus over time.
The virus is slowing down in its ability to cause disease
and that will help contribute to elimination.
A PILL TO BURN FAT

at Harvard University may have discovered a way to help

has two kinds of fat cells, white cells which store excess
calories in the form of flab and brown cells which burn

fat everyone wants. In laboratory tests the team worked
with human stem cells that would normally develop into
white fat cells. After screening more than 1,000 chemical

Exercise is great to reduce cholesterol and boost mood and
energy levels. These can never be replicated by taking a pill.
A NEW TOOL IN THE WAR AGAINST OBESITY
The new device can help obese people lose weight by
tricking their stomachs into feeling full. The device approved last month by the Food and Drug Administration
is implanted in the abdomen and uses electronic signals to
help control feelings of hunger and fullness. The Maestro
Rechargeable System uses an electric pulses generator to
stimulate the vagus nerve, which signals the brain when the
gut is full or empty. In a yearlong clinical trial involving
233 patients, those who were implanted with the Maestro
lost 8.5 percent more weight than patients in the group.
While EnteroMedics, the company behind the Maestro,
was hoping for 10 percent or better weight loss, the FDA
nonetheless approved the device as it resulted in sustained
weight loss in patients who were unable to shed pounds
using the traditional methods. The Maestro is less invasive
than bariatric lap band surgery and fills a significant gap in
the currently available treatment options. The device has
been approved for individuals with a body mass index from
35-45-roughly 75 pounds overweight-and who suffer from
obesity related conditions such as type 2 diabetes. More
than one-third of the United States adults are obese, resulting in an estimated $147 billion in medical costs each year.
HIGH-HEELS DAMAGE KNEES
Many women can attest to the aches and pains that
can result from strutting around in a pair of high heels.
But a new study indicates that the pain isn’t temporary:
Wearing heels can prematurely age knee joints and cause
osteoarthritis. Researchers at Stanford University scanned
the knees of 14 healthy women as they walked wearing
shoes with various heel heights. They found that as the
heels got higher, the strain on the knees increased with the
heels of 3 inches or higher effectively “aging” the joints
by 20 years. The additional strain which occurs because
the knee is still bent when the heel hits the ground, can
lead to osteoarthritis, a painful condition that results from
wearing away of cartilage, the body’s natural shock absorber. Arthritis specialists who were not involved in the
study said the results suggest it’s probably a good idea to
limit the height of the heel to a couple of inches, except
for special occasions.

A Kentucky state senator has proposed a bill that would
entitle students who encounter a transgender student in the
bathroom to collect $2,500.00 for their emotional trauma.
State Senator C.B. Embry’s Bill prohibits transgender
students from using the “wrong” bathroom and authorizes
students to sue schools if such an incident occurs, since it
just might, make members of the opposite biological sex
uncomfortable.
Nine Cleveland police officers who killed two unarmed
African Americans in a hail of 137 bullets in 2012 are suing
the city, claiming they were unfairly punished because they
are not black. The killings of Timothy Russell and Malissa
Williams - who were each shot more than 20 times - came
after cops mistook their car backfiring for gunshot. The
officers were suspended with pay for three days for the
killings, but claim they were unfairly subjected to “unofficial punishments” because of their race.
A Christian church-design company has proposed
building a McDonald’s restaurant inside the church to attract more worshippers. Lux Dei Design says its “McMass
Project” will draw a wider audience to the church and it
will also spread the message.
An Alabama middle school principal has asked students to bring in cans of food they could use as projectiles
against school shooters. We realize at first this may seem

A Connecticut man is suing New York City for not

Ronald Corwin’s $60 million suit alleges that the city

claims he lost the pleasure of tasting food and literally

A Florida man called the police to observe him spanking his daughter to make sure he didn’t violate any law.
He wanted to discipline his 12 year old after she got into
a heated argument with her sister, so he called police. The
police stood by as he spanked her four times on her buttocks. The officer noted it in his report and also stated that
there had been no crime committed.
A Frederick County, Maryland, councilman threatened
to sue a local newspaper if it continued to print his name
in news stories without his permission. He stated “use my
name again, unauthorized and you will be paying for an
attorney, citing the First Amendment; the Frederick News
Post used his name dozens of times in a mocking editorial”.
A Colorado school district is offering students a chance
to win bicycles, iPods and other prizes if they buy a federally mandated “healthy” lunch. The new nutrition rules
backed by Michelle Obama caused a big drop in cafeteria
purchases, so officials set up a raffle to reward students who
give the new food a try. It really isn’t so bad stated one of
the lunch facilitators it just a little different.
An Ohio woman received a bill for $584.87 to cover
the cost of the police response to her minor car accident.
After Grace Jones, 20, bumped into the rear of a car, two
cop cars showed up. She was billed under a local law requiring nonresidents to pay police costs. At this time she

Disneyland 2055: What the Future May Hold
For the Original Park
Research from: The Los Angeles Times
It’s been almost a decade since Disneyland opened
a truly new attraction and nearly two decades since the
Anaheim theme park introduced a ground breaking new
ride. You have to go back to 2005, Buzz Lightyear Astro
Blasters for the last truly new attraction at Disneyland and that was a knockoff of a Walt Disney World ride. The
last ground breaking ride at the park was Indiana Jones
Adventure in 1995. Rocket Rods opened during the 1998
Tomorrowland makeover, but that starcrossed ride has long
since retired to Yesterland. Since then, there have been
extensive rehabs (Stars Tours in 2011), elaborate refreshes
(It’s a Small World in 2009) and substantial rethemes
(Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage in 2007), but few major
changes that significantly altered the complexion of the 59
year old theme park. As Disneyland approaches its 60th
anniversary, I thought it would be a good time to take a
widely speculative look at what the original Disney theme
park might look like over the coming decades with an eye
towards the 100th Anniversary in 2055.
What will still be around when Disneyland hits the
century mark? What will be long gone by then? And what

new rides and attractions will be added?
While there is little room for Disneyland to grow
beyond its existing footprint, there’s still plenty of opportunity for change at the tradition-bound park over the
next 40 years. So what’s untouchable what’s vulnerable
and what’s possible? Join me as I pull out my crystal
ball and play armchair Imagineer with a few educated
guesses at what the future holds for Disneyland. I have
looked at a number of factors in crafting my predictions.
Have similar rides been removed or added at other Disney
parks? Which classic rides didn’t make the cut when new
Magic Kingdom-style parks were built? What Disney or
Pixar characters still don’t have a ride? And are there any
abandoned or proposed concepts that might finally come to
realization? There seems to be about a baker’s dozen that
need to be removed, leaving big chunks of Tomorrow land,
Fantasyland, Adventure land, Frontier land and Boomtown
for Walt Disney Imagineering to work their magic while
sparing most of Main Street USA, New Orleans Square
and Critter Country.
Let’s take a land by land look what Disneyland might
look like at its centennial.
Main Street USA
Untouchable: Disneyland Railroad
Vulnerable: Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln
Possible: Walt Disney Story
Walt Disney’s love of trains helped inspire his original
theme park, making the Disneyland Railroad the first of the
untouchable rides in my baker’s dozen. It doesn’t hurt that
railroads operate at all five of the Magic Kingdom-style
parks - the castle - centric copies of Disneyland built in
Florida(Magic Kingdom), France (Disneyland Paris), Japan
(Tokyo Disneyland), and China (Hong Kong Disneyland).
Great moments with Mr. Lincoln debuted at the 1964 New
York World’s Fair and can feel that dated to younger audiences. A 2009 refresh of the attraction, one of Disney’s first
attempts at audio animatronics, did little to improve attendance at the often overlooked classic. One possibility for
the opera house on Main Street USA, a movie planned for
the Carthay Circle Theater at Disney California Adventure
called “the Walt Disney Story” focusing on the early years
of the animator’s career.

parks tend to have only one attraction per movie property
or character, to preserve the illusion for young visitors that
the film’s protagonist “lives” inside the attraction. The safest of the Disneyland dark rides Peter Pan’s Flight, with
consistent long lines.
The recent expansion of Orlando’s Fantasyland introduced the Seven Dwarf’s mine train, a rethemed Goofy’s
Barnstormer coaster, a dueling Dumbo ride and a Beauty
and the Beast restaurant. Disneyland completely revamped
Fantasyland in 1983. Is the marquee land due for another
makeover?
There are always dozens of as yet unrealized Fantasyland projects that have been proposed over the years,
one is the Rock Candy Mountain and the Rainbow Road
to Oz. Either would be a colorful delight. Among the Disney characters who might get a ride someday are Bambi,
Cinderella and Frozen. Sisters Elsa and Anna, one idea,
convert the Snow White dark ride to a Cinderella Theme
and add the Seven Dwarfs Coaster. And the biggest wish:
A dragon’s lair underneath Sleeping Beauty Castle, just
like at Disneyland in Paris.
TOMORROWLAND

Thunder Mountain joins the list of 13 untouchable rides.
And if you’re keeping count, I consider the Mark Twain
Riverboat and the one of a kind Sailing Ship Columbia a
single attraction, since they run along the same course. It’s
pretty hard to imagine Disneyland ever draining the Rivers
of America in favor of a new land, but it’s much easier to
envision Tom Sawyer Island receding into memory. Just
think how amazing a Treasure Cove based on the Shanghai
Disneyland renderings would look across the river from
Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Not everything
is out of harm’s way on the Rivers of America, though,
Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes only ply the waters of
Anaheim and Tokyo after being run aground in Orlando and
Paris. And Fantasmic is looking pretty puny and outdated
alongside the skyscraping fountain works of DCA’s World
of Color. The biggest untapped space in Disneyland is a
nine-acre expanse in Frontierland that includes Big Thunder Ranch and the Circle D Horse Ranch in a backstage area
of the park. Another possibility that advanced to the scale
model stage is Discovery Bay; a Jules Verne inspired land
with a retro-futuristic steampunk theme. Various plans envisioned a blimp flight simulator, an electromagnetic coaster,
a balloon ride and an underwater submarine restaurant...

This story is about who was the first president of the
United States. If the name John Hanson does not come to
mind, it is understandable. Dissatisfaction with England
was growing for years. The Colonial Americans felt that
they were British subjects, and as such deserved the same
rights as the citizens living in England. The British parliament had other ideas. They felt the colonies should support
their needs.
In 1777 each of the colonies sent representatives to
Philadelphia to decide what was needed to change their
situation. During this process, a decision was made to act
as a unit rather than 13 separate entities. The first step was
to create an agreement between them on how to act uniformly since up to that date each colony administered their
own affairs. It would turn out to be the first step toward
creating the foundation of a new country. The representatives worked on a formal document called The Articles
of Confederation that would serve as the guiding set of
rules for this new country. Republics and democracies did
not exist before this time. Countries were ruled by kings
or monarchs. The document was finalized and signed by
the representatives. The Articles of Confederation was the
precursor to our Constitution.
The articles required that a person be elected by a vote
of the representatives to become the president. The president would be the leader of this new Confederation. John
Hanson, the representative from Maryland, was elected
unanimously by the representatives, including George
Washington. The position was for one year only, and the
incumbent could not be re-elected again for three years.
Immediately after his election to the position, John and
the new confederation were under siege. It wasn’t by the
British, but by the Continental Army. The Revolutionary
War was over. The fighting was completed. The men who
had suffered and endured hardship now wanted to go home.
These men were not professional soldiers and had signed
up only to fight the war. Now, they wanted to get paid
and go home to resume their lives. Because of the chaotic
situation during the war payment to the soldiers had not
been possible on a regular basis. They informed General
Washington of their intensions to march on Philadelphia
and demand to get paid. If they did not get paid, they would
take over the government and put him in charge as king
and let him run the country. Washington persuaded them
to be patient and assured them that they would be paid.
John Hanson from Maryland may not be widely known
today. Around 1661 John’s grandfather had borrowed
money to pay for the trip to the colonies. He had agreed
to work as an indentured servant for a period of time.

The work would serve as payment for the debt. Once the
original amount was paid, he became a free citizen and set
himself up as a businessman in Maryland. John’s father
Samuel became a plantation owner. He owned 1000 acres
of planted land called Mulberry Grove. This made him a
large landowner and a leader in his community. Samuel
had also held various political offices.
In 1774 after the Boston Tea Party Great Britain had
passed the Punitive Intolerable Acts. These laws were very
restrictive and were meant to convince the American colonists to give up their rebellion against the crown. Instead it
caused a greater reaction from the American colonialists.
John’s background put him in a position to become
active in the future of the colonies. He had chaired the
Frederick County meeting that was discussing the impact
of these laws. John urged that Maryland participate in the
meeting. He was selected in June 1776 as a delegate to the
First Continental Congress that was meeting which was
held in Philadelphia to discuss what to do about the current situation. Twelve of the thirteen colonies had agreed
to meet. Georgia had abstained for other reasons.
This congress was the first of four incarnations that the
colonies would go through before they became the United
States. The 13 colonies first united as the Colonial Continental Congress. They elected John as the, or president of
that continental congress. Then, they formed into the U.S.
Continental Congress. This was followed by the US in
Congress Assembled under the Article of Confederation.
Finally, they united under the US Constitution, which
has lasted to our present times. Under this last iteration,
George Washington was elected the first President of the
United States.
So, the next time you are asked who is on first, ask
which iteration. We know who it is who is on first. It was
John Hanson from Maryland.

NYPD Have the Cops Been Unfairly Critized?
en who are public employees are entitled to stop their jobs,
because they have been publically criticized.” The cops’
slowdown is certainly one of the more political protests in
recent memory. By refusing to arrest or issue summons for
petty crimes like carrying an open beer or parking illegally,
these cops are undermining the very “Broken Window”
policies that so infuriate residents of so-called hot spot
neighborhoods. Cash strapped residents are no longer being forced to hand over a day’s wages in fines, while cops
aren’t wasting their time filling predetermined summons
quotas. The new approach to law enforcement should be a
cause for celebration. Instead it’s just more fodder for our
ongoing hate-a-thon. Happy New Year, America.

So the New Year has begun the same way that last year
ended with thousands of cops turning their backs on Mayor
Bill de Blasio at a funeral for one of their officers. New York
City Police Officers believe the mayor encouraged anticop
sentiment after a grand jury declined to indict a white cop
in the choking death of unarmed black man Eric Garner. De
Blasio allied himself with protesters and said he feared for
his own biracial son’s safety when interacting with cops.
Days later NYPD officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos
were assassinated in Brooklyn by a vigilante who wrote
on social media “I am Putting Wings on Pigs”. “They take
one of ours ...Lets take 2 of theirs”. As police union leader
Patrick Lynch rightly put it “there is blood on many hands”.
In recent months Mayor de Blasio, Attorney General Eric
Holder and President Obama have all joined protestors
in peddling the dreadful lie that black people in America
should fear the police. NYPD officers are “mad as hell” and
have begun a defiant slowdown in which the enforcement
of petty offenses is down more than 90 percent.
It is absurd to have to say this, there is only 1 person
responsible for Officers Liu and Ramos, a mentally ill,
career criminal named Ismaaiyl Brinsley, who earlier that
day shot his girlfriend and then later killed himself. Don’t
blame the insane actions on protestors who objected to the
injustice regarding Garner’s death. In December a case
from Chattanooga, Tenn., there was an angry person in
body armor allegedly fired multiple shots out of her car
window at people and other cars. She even pointed her gun
at a police officer, yet after a police chase, Julia Shields, a
45 year old white woman was taken into custody unharmed.
But not all police chases end the same way.
It’s long past time for little perspective. So here it is,
“Cops rarely kill. The NYPD has 34,500 officers. Every
morning these men and women say good-bye to their families and go out into the streets to protect the city’s 8 million
residents. They have an estimated 25 million interactions
with civilians annually. Yet in all of 2014 three people three died during the same form of confrontation with the
NYPD officers. In the meantime these hard working police
have transformed New York City into one of the nation’s
safest big cities. Overall crime has dropped nearly 80
percent and nowhere is that progress more noticeable than
the very low income and minority neighborhoods whose
residents are supposedly targeted by police.
The behavior of the NYPD is “insubordination”. What
their Union President is saying “is that these men and wom-

Lemon Loaf
Delicious, easy to make
1 1/2 cups of flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
1 cup of sugar
2 tablespoons of butter (room temperature)
1 teaspoon of vanilla
1 teaspoon of lemon extract
1/3 cup of lemon juice
1/2 cup of oil
ICING
1 cup of powdered sugar plus a tablespoon
2 tablespoons of milk
1/2 teaspoon of lemon extract
Directions
Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt
in a bowl. Use a mixer to blend together the eggs, sugar,
butter, vanilla, and lemon extract and lemon juice in a
medium bowl.
Pour wet ingredients over the dry ingredients and blend
until smooth, add the oil to the mix.
Pour batter into a well-greased loaf pan, Bake at 350
degrees for 45 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
Make the lemon icing and pour on the cooled cake
before cutting.

Capers, and Lemon

1 pound bucatini
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil. plus more for drizzling
1 sprig oregono, plus 1tablespoon lightly packed fresh
leaves
1/4 teaspoon red-pepper flakes, plus more for serving
2 1/2 teaspoons coarse salt
1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest and 2 tablespoons fresh
lemon juice, plus wedges for serving
4 cups finely chopped cauliflower florets (from 1 head)
3 tablespoons capers, preferably salt-packed, rinsed and
drained
1/2 cup finely grated Parmesan (1 1/2 ounces), plus more
for serving
1. Heat broiler with rack 8 inches from heating element.
Combine pasta. 5 cups water, 2 tablespoons oil, oregono
sprig, pepper flakes, and 2 teaspoons salt in a large, straightsided ovenproof skillet. Bring to a boil over medium-high
heat; continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until sauce
is mostly reduced and pasta is al dente, about 8 minutes.
Remove from heat; stir in lemon zest and juice.
2. ln a bowl, toss cauliflower with remaining 2 tablespoons oil and 1/2 teaspoon salt, capers, Parmesan, and
oregano leaves. Sprinkle over pasta in skillet. Broil until
cauliflower is golden in spots and pasta is heated through,
about 5 minutes. Toss to combine. Serve with more cheese
and pepper flakes, a drizzle of oil, and lemon wedges.
Herbed Rice with Dates and Pomegranate

1 cup basmati rice
Coarse salt
1 1/4-inch-thick slice peeled fresh ginger
1/2 cup finely chopped fresh dill
1/3 cup pomegranate seeds (from 1/2 pomegranate)

6 large soft dates, such as medjool or zahidi, pitted and

1. Bring rice, 1/4 teaspoon salt, ginger, and 1 1/2 cups
water to a boil in a small saucepan. Cover, reduce heat to
a simmer, and cook until all of water is absorbed, 16 to 17
minutes. Remove from heat. Let stand, covered, 10 minutes. Fluff with fork. Remove and discard ginger.
2. Transfer rice to a large bowl; let cool 5 minutes. Stir
in dill, pomegranate seeds, pistachios, dates, oil, and lemon
juice. Season with salt and serve.

10 ounces frozen pearl onions, thawed and drained
8 ounces cremini mushrooms, halved (quartered, if large)
2 tablespoons tomato paste
2 cups dry white wine
1 3/4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
1/2 cup lightly packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, for
serving
Cooked egg noodles tossed with olive oil or butter, for
serving
1. Preheat oven to 350°. Brown bacon in a lorge,
straight-sided ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat
until fat is rendered, about 5 minutes. With a slotted spoon,
transfer to a plate. Season chicken with salt and pepper;
sprinkle with flour. Working in 2 batches, add to skillet,
skin-side down; cook until golden, about 4 minutes a side.
Transfer to plate. Remove all but 2 tablespoons fat from

4 bone-in pork chops, each about 1 inch thick (about 2 1/2

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
2 medium sweet potatoes, scrubbed and cut into 1/4-inchthick rounds
1 large sweet onion, such as Vidalia, peeled and cut into
1/4-inch-thick rounds
1/3 cup apple-cider vinegar
1/2 cup apple cider
1 teaspoon caraway seeds
2 apples, preferably Honeycrisp, thinly sliced, seeds removed
1. Preheat oven to 375° Season pork with salt and
pepper. Heat a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high
heat; swirl in oil. Cook chops until golden brown, turning
once, about 8 minutes. Transfer to a plate. Remove all but

Spice-Rubbed Rack of Lamb

Total Time: 50 min. Serves: 4
2 teaspoons whole cumin seeds
2 teaspoons whole corlander seeds
1 8-rib rack of lamb (about 2 pounds)
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
1 tablespoon safflower oil
1. Preheat oven to 400°. Toast both seeds in a small skillet over medium-high heat until fragrant, about 1 minute.
Let cool. Transfer to a resealable plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin.
2. Season lamb with salt and pepper. Heat a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Swirl in oil. Sear lamb
until golden brown on all sides, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a platter.

16 ounces clam juice
1 1/2 pounds skinless cod or halibut fillet, cut into 1 1/2inch

4 slices baguette, each 1 1/2 inches thick on the diagonal
1. Heat broiler with rack 8 inches from heating element. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large ovenproof skillet
over medium-high heat. Add carrots, celery, 3 tablespoons
shallot and 3 thyme sprigs; season with salt. Cook, stirring
occasionally, until vegetables are golden in spots, about
5 minutes. Stir in tomatoes and juice; simmer, breaking
up tomatoes into bite-size pieces, until liquid is mostly
evaporated, about 5 minutes. Stir in clam juice and fish;
return to a simmer. Remove from heat.
2. Spread remaining 2 tablespoons butter over bread.
Sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon shallot and thyme
leaves from 2 sprigs; season with salt and pepper. Place
atop fish. Broil until fish is just cooked through and bread is
toasted, about 2 minutes (if bread is darkening too quickly,
move skillet to lower rack); serve.

1. Crust: Preheat oven to 350°. Butter a 9-by-13-inch
baking dish and line with parchment, leaving a 2-inch
overhang on long sides. Butter parchment. Whisk together
flour, confectioners’ sugar, and salt in a bowl. Work in butter with your fingertips until combined and mixture holds
together when pinched. Press crust evenly into bottom of
prepared pan. Freeze 15 minutes. Bake crust until light
golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes.
2. Filling: Meanwhile, in a heatproof bowl, soak dates
in boiling water 15 minutes. Drain, reserving liquid. Puree
dates in a food processor with enough of soaking liquid
(about 1/2 cup) to make a spreadable paste. (You should
have about 1 1/4 cups.)
3. While dates are soaking, whisk together granulated
sugar, flour, and salt in a bowl. Whisk in eggs, then lemon
zest and juice.
4. Spread date paste evenly over baked crust. Bake 4
minutes. Reduce heat to 325°, pour filling over date layer,
then bake until Just set, about 20 minutes more.
5. Let cool on a wire rack 20 minutes. Run a paring
knife around edges, then lift out of dish using parchment.
Let cool completely. Dust with confectioners’ sugar. Cut
into squares.
Honey Blondies
Active Time, 15 min. Total Time, 2 hr. 15 min.
Makes: 16
This recipe works well with practically any variety of
honey-orange blossom, acacia, even strong-flavored buckwheat. If desired, you can stir in 1/2 cup chopped toasted
nuts (almonds walnuts. or pecans) with the chocolate.
1 stick unsalted butter, plus more for pan
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for pan
1/3 cup honey
3/4 cup packed light·brown sugar
1 large egg, lightly beaten
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon coarse salt
4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, cut into chunks
1. Preheat oven to 350°. Butter an 8-inch square baking
pan. Line with parchment leaving an overhang on 2 sides,
then butter parchment and flour pan, tapping out excess.
2. Melt butter and honey in a saucepan. Stir in brown
sugar, then transfer to a bowl. Stir in egg and vanilla,
then flour and salt until just combined. Let cool about 30
minutes. Stir in chocolate chunks; spread batter evenly in
prepared pan.
3. Bake until browned on edges and set, about 28 minutes. Let cool completely in pan set on a wire rack, then lift
blondies out of pan using overhang. Remove parchment
and cut into squares. Blondies can be stored in an airtight
container up to 3 days.

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

CARAMEL
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup heavy cream
SERVING
1 teaspoon flaky sea salt, such as Maldon
Lightly sweetened Whipped cream (optional)
1. Date puree: Bring dates and bourbon to a simmer
in a small saucepan. Cook until almost all of liquid is
absorbed. Remove from heat; cover and let cool. Puree in
a food processor until smooth. (You should have 1 cup.)
2. Cake: Preheat oven to 325°. Butter a 9-inch spring-
form pan. Line bottom with parchment; butter parchment.
Dust pan with cocoa, topping out excess.
3. Melt butter and chocolate in a large heatproof bowl
set over (not in) a pan of simmering water, whisking until
smooth. Remove from heat. Whisk in 2/3 cup date puree.
Let cool; whisk in egg yolks. coarse salt, and cinnamon.
4. With a mixer on medium-high speed, whisk egg
whites until soft peaks form. Slowly add sugar, beating
until stiff peaks form. Fold one-third of whites into chocolate mixture, then fold in remaining whites. Transfer to
prepared pan.
5. Bake cake until set (it should be cracking a bit on
edges and shiny in center), about 30 minutes. Let cool
completely in pan on a wire rack. Run a paring knife around
sides; remove from pan.
6. Caramel: Bring sugar and 1/4 cup water to a boil
in a small saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring until
sugar is dissolved. Let boil, without stirring, until deep
golden brown, swirling pan to color evenly, and washing
down sides of pan with a wet pastry brush to keep crystals
from forming, 10 to 11 minutes. Turn off heat; carefully
pour in cream (it will spatter), stirring to combine. Stir in
remaining 1/3 cup date puree. Pass caramel through a fine
sieve to remove lumps. Let cool until thick but pourable,
about 30 minutes.
7. Serving: Pour caramel over cake and spread so it
drips over sides. Sprinkle with flaky salt. Cut into wedges
with a hot knife, wiping knife between cuts; serve with
whipped cream.

Economy: Another banner month for job creation.
America’s job streak continues. The United States
economy added 252,000 jobs last month, bringing 2014’s
grand total to nearly 3 million new jobs. The best year for
hiring since 1999. The unemployment rate fell to 5.6 percent, its lowest point since June 2008. But job growth still
isn’t translating into wage gains for most workers. Average
hourly pay actually fell in December. Wages increased
only 1.7 percent over the past year, barely ahead of the 1.3
percent inflation rate.
Autos: Honda fined $70M over safety violations
Federal safety regulators have slapped Honda with the
Maximum allowable fine for failing to report hundreds of
injuries and deaths involving its vehicles. The $70 million
fine is the largest ever levied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which accused the automaker
of failing to report more than 1,720 incidents involving
potential safety defects. Honda blamed its lapse “on data
entry and computer coding errors, as well as a narrow interpretation of what incidents required a report to regulators” .
Companies: Coca-Cola announces layoffs
Coca-Cola is cutting back. The soft drink company
stated last month that it would eliminate 1,600 to 1,800
white collar jobs worldwide, including 500 positions at
its Atlanta headquarters. The downsizing is part of the $3
billion cost-cutting drive Coke announced last year, after
the beverage firm - which also owns Sprite, Minute Maid
and PowerAde - slashed its profit forecasts because of
slowing global soda sales.
Housing: FHA lowers mortgage fees
Homebuyers are getting some reliefs on their mortgage
fees. The White House announced last month that the
Federal Housing Administration will significantly reduce
the annual premiums it charges to FHA loan customers,
from 1.35 percent of a mortgage’s value to 0.85 percent.
The White House believes that the lower premiums will
entice 250,000 buyers to take out federally insured FHA
loans over the next three years and save new borrowers an
average of $900 each year.

Christie’s stunned the art world this week when it announced CEO Steven Murphy’s abrupt exit. The London

just weeks ago ousted its own boss, William Ruprecht, it
is rare for the top jobs at the houses to change at the same
time. Christie’s has named Patricia Barbizet, the longtime
lieutenant of owner Francois Pinault, as the company’s
first female CEO.
Education: For Profit College chain changes hands
A troubled for - profit college chain is selling some of
its campuses to a major student loan debt collector. Corinthian Colleges which has drawn the ire of government
regulators for deceptive marketing practices, is selling more
than half of its 107 campuses for $24 million to ECMC
Group, which collects debts on federal student loans.
The ECMC Group has pledged to turn the campuses into
nonprofit schools serving nearly 40,000 students. Student
advocates, however, worry that the company has no experience providing educational services.
Tech: Apple iTunes trial gets underway
The former Apple CEO, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2011, will make a posthumous guest appearance in
court in coming weeks through a never before seen video

testimony, along with a number of Jobs’s emails, is evidence in a class action suit accusing Apple of violating

Autos: Black Friday boosts car sales

Weitzman, the luxury shoemaker for $574 million. It’s a
rare acquisition for Coach but the deal promises to bolster
Coach’s image and offer new avenues for growth. The
company is struggling to turn around its brand as consumers defect to brands like Michael Kors and Kate Spade for
handbags that are edgier but priced similarly.

than 15 percent of the global smartphone market, up from
11 percent in 2013.
Box office revenue for movies fell 5.3 percent in 2014,
the worst result since 2011. But studios are optimistic about
2015, which got off to a strong start, thanks to films like
the Hobbit, The Battle of the Five Armies, Into the Woods
and Unbroken.
Musician and producer Pharrell Williams made less
than $3,000 in songwriter royalties from 43 million Pandora streams of his blockbuster song “Happy” in the first

Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey
Linda Conroy, of Brick, was recently named director
of development for the nonprofit Caregiver Volunteers of
Central Jersey (CVCJ), Toms River, which provides services to the elderly in 23 municipalities in Ocean County.
Among the services offered at no charge are food
shopping, rides to medical appointments, friendly visits,
visits by pet therapy dogs, and a respite program for those
caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease. More than
1,200 volunteers assist more than 2,500 senior citizens each
month in Ocean County.
Conroy was introduced to CVCJ in 2009 after her 30year career in the funeral industry came to a close and she
became a member of the organization’s Board of Directors. She also became one of organization’s volunteer food
shoppers. In 2012, the Alzheimer Respite Care Program at
CVCJ honored her with the Humanitarian Award.
Conroy is a member of the Ocean County Regional
Ethics Committee, and a facilitator for the bereavement
support group at Visitation Church in Brick, where she also
lectors and is secretary for the Liturgy Team.
She is on the Board of Directors of the Brick Chamber of Commerce and is the co-chair of education for the
Point Pleasant Women’s Club, where she established the

scholarship award for an adult woman returning to school.
She is also a life member of the New Jersey Parent Teacher
Association.
She and her husband, Jim, moved to Brick in 2002
from the North Bergen area. They have three children and

With Snow covering the ground, there isn't too much
we can do for the winter and our gardens. Hopefully everyone has been putting their coffee grinds and egg shells
in a ShopRite bag, the essentials for our garden compost. I
have found that putting these ingredients in my above the
ground garden always makes for a beautiful and healthy
vegetable garden. So now it's a good time to focus on the
house plants. With heat running all the time indoor plants
suffer and sometimes become diseased. Check for yellowing leaves. It maybe counterintuitive, but yellow foliage
is often a sign of too much water. Since some houseplants
are semi dormant over the winter months, they don't need
nearly as much water as they do in the summer. Clip off the
affected leaves and hold back on the watering until the soil
feels dry. If the plant stays green, the problem is solved. If
yellowing persists, it could mean an iron deficiency. Try
amending the soil with an iron supplement.
Check for dry brittle leaves. If your skin is extra dry
because of indoor heating, chances are that your houseplants are also suffering. Add moisture to the air around
your plants by setting pots on pebbled filled trays of water
or simply use a dehumidifier. Check for dead or shabby
foliage. This not only looks unappealing but can also lead
to fungi or other diseases if left to rot in the pot. Unlike
in outdoor gardening, you shouldn't leave rotting leaves
untouched. Pinch them off and toss them out. Check for
dust on your leave. Clogged stomata (that's what the pores
are called) prevent plants from transpiring. Wipe the tops
and undersides of smooth foliage with a soft dust cloth.
Check for pests. White fuzz suggests mealybugs, tiny
brown helmets on stems indicate scale (a sap sucking insect) and webs and red dots are signs of spider mites. Dab
away mealy bugs with a rubbing alcohol-soaked cotton
swab, cut off stems infested with scale and give plants with
spider mites a cold shower.
