THE MARCH 2015 / VOLUME 15 ISSUE 2 Temple Chronicle C O N G R E G AT I O N FROM THE RABBI'S STUDY RABBI BARRY BLOCK Dear Friends: “Be Happy; it’s Adar!” Adar is the month that includes the festive, even frivolous, holiday of Purim. This year, Purim will be particularly meaningful at Congregation B’nai Israel, including our fabulous annual events and more. Read inside for details! What’s special this year? When we read from the Megillah, we will have the opportunity to read from an actual Scroll of Esther, a real Megillah! Last summer, when our congregant Beth Levi was cleaning out her parents’ home, after the death of her dear mother, she came across a scroll. Beth knew that her grandfather had been a rabbi, but she didn’t know that he had his very own Scroll of Esther, and that it had been passed down to her parents. The scroll was in a canister that, to quote Beth, “had outlived its purpose,” so Beth can be excused for not recognizing the gem that laid inside. Now, Beth, her husband Duff Campbell, and their children, Eva and Raphael, have generously donated the Megillah of Esther to Congregation B’nai Israel in memory of her parents, Aida and David Levi, of blessed memory. Making the gift even more special and beautiful, Beth commissioned an artist, Evi Sheffres, who was a friend of her parents, to make a magnificent, decorative new container for the Megillah. I was honored to collaborate with Evi and Beth, to suggest a color scheme and theme appropriate for the holiday. Evi involved Sim Glantz, a woodworker, who constructed a practical and aesthetically pleasing stand to hold the Megillah and its container. During our Megillah reading on March 8, at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary, we will take the opportunity to dedicate this Megillah to our congregation and its future generations, in memory of Beth’s parents, with our gratitude to Beth and her family for their generosity. Beth is not, of course, the first to donate a sacred object to Congregation B’nai Israel. Throughout our congregation’s 149 year history, generous congregational families have dedicated Torah Scrolls, ritual objects, and prayer books. ...continued on next page Temple B'nai Israel Newsletter, Volume 15, Issue 2, November 2014, published monthly by Temple B'nai Israel 3700 Rodney Parham, Little Rock, AR 72212 B’ NA I ISRAEL Worship at a Glance Friday, March 6 Union Prayer Book - Sinai Edition Service, led by Rabbi Block Music: David Bauman Sermon: “Lessons of the Broken Tablets” Candles & Kiddush: Kirsta & Keith Nigro Reader: Muriel Lederman Oneg Sponsor: In honor of Mac Lyons By: Dr. Lance Bogoslavsky Saturday, March 7 Torah Study, led by Rabbi Block, at 9:30 a.m. Shabbat Service at 11:00 a.m., led by Rabbi Block Friday, March 13 Mishkan T’filah Service led by Rabbi Block Music: Steve Bauman Sermon: “Rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem” Candles & Kiddush: Gina & Charles Kokes Reader: Karin & Ron Bara Oneg Sponsor: Sisterhood Saturday, March 14 Torah Study, led by Rabbi Block, at 9:30 a.m. Shabbat Service at 11:00 a.m., led by Rabbi Block Friday, March 20 Union Prayer Book – Sinai Edition Service led by Rabbi Block Music: Jana Cohen Sermon: “Sin and Sacrifice” Reader: Luke Kramer Oneg Sponsor: Sisterhood Saturday, March 21 Torah Study, led by Rabbi Block, at 9:30 a.m. Shabbat Services, led by Rabbi Block, at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 27 Mishkan T’filah Service, led by Rabbi Block Music: Jeffrey Neuhauser and Russ Webb-Parish Sermon: “How a Reform Jew Violates Passover” Candles: Madelon Scallet Kiddush: Brad Joseph Reader: Julie Shindler Oneg Sponsor: In Honor of Jeff Neuhauser’s Birthday By: Terri Moore and Bud Neuhauser continued on next page... Gina Kokes has undertaken, with the partnership of Jim Pfeifer and our Archives, a tremendous project to identify the source of our most holy objects. Even better, Gina has worked with Ellyn Polsky to devise and implement a curriculum to involve many of our Religious School classes in a project-based learning unit to explore the sacred symbols of Congregation B’nai Israel. Needless to say, Gina has documented the Levi-Campbell family’s donation of the Megillah for posterity! So if I may change hats for a moment I'd like to try to answer some of these questions drawing from my experience over the last 20 years and some research I have done. When I was growing up here in the 1950s and 60s, our music was offered in the style of most Reform congregations of the day, that which we now refer to as Classical Reform. Music was almost always played on an organ and performed by a soloist, sometimes with an accompanying choir, usually unseen. In revisiting the old Union Hymnal with an assist from my iPhone's Google Search, I was able to identify some pieces composed by masters such as Mendelson (of Jewish ancestry), with some "contemporary" lyrics by John Milton and John Quincy Adams (not Jewish). Not surprisingly many of these hymns were composed in major keys and sounded a lot like those of our Christian neighbors. Following the birth of Reform Judaism in the latter half of the 19th century, a number of composers began churning out pieces, many of which were converted to English like Praise to the Living God (based upon the traditional Yigdal), the Lord of All (Adon Olam), and How Good It Is (Tov L'hodot but based upon an older Lewandowski melody for L'cha Dodi). Other more prolific composers such as A. W. Binder and S. Sobel wrote a great many tunes but they seem to have lacked the staying power of those mentioned above and the works of Solomon Sulzer (Shema and most of our Torah service). No one knows who wrote God Is in His Holy Temple and it is believed that the venerable version of Ein Keloheinu is an old German drinking song. Still these are the melodies that many of us listened to in Temple with our folks and they say "home" to us. Enter the young: a whole generation of baby boomers reached their teens and at their parents' insistence became involved in our Temple Youth Group with its regional and national gatherings. There they became involved with the music of their times which were not surprisingly songs of protest and social action (The Hammer Song, We Shall Overcome, Blowin' in the Wind). Still there was a lack of new and original music for this genereation in their camps and in their worship. That is until a young songleader from St. Paul, Debbie Friedman, stepped forward with her debut album Sing Unto God in 1972. For nearly 40 years Debbie graced us with dozens of new melodies in a folk-rock style that transformed our worship and our song sessions. She was soon joined by others such as Jeff Klepper, Doug Cotler and Julie Silver and a whole new calling, that of the Jewish songleader and service leader had been born. Fast forward now to the 1980s when Jana Cohen and Steve Bauman first began to incorporate this more contemporary style of music into our worship services. In the early 1990s they invited me to join them and since then we have tried to keep up with what's out there that we think the congregation would enjoy. It seems many, though not all, seem to enjoy this newer style with its rhythm, its visibility and the feeling of singing along with rather than being sung to. Many of these newer songs employ a combination of Hebrew and English making them both singable and educational. Furthermore, many use minor keys giving the music a much more Jewish flavor. Now fast forward one more time to the year 2000. Baby boomers are now 50 and have kids who are of Temple Youth Group age. I was attending my first Hava Nashira gathering for song leaders and service leaders held in Oconomowac, WI. It was cold and rainy as we registered and I sat down for a cup of soup next to a tall friendly chap from Nashville. After introducing myself I asked who he was and what he did. He said his name was Dan Nichols and that he was in a Jewish rock band. I remember thinking to myself, "Yeah, right." Well, he was right and now we have music from the likes of Dan, Rick Recht and Josh Nelson to learn and play for our kids so that they can find meaning in their worship and in living a Jewish life just as we all did. Transitions such as these are never easy and must be undertaken gradually and with great sensitivity and respect for those who came before. At every URJ Biennial there are classes on how to introduce new music to your congregation and I never miss them. I am confident that if, we all listen to each other, and try to keep in mind where we have come from and where we should be going that Congregation B'nai Israel will continue to move forward, just as we have always done. David Bauman Coffee, Cake, and Conversation Enjoy dessert and an informal schmooze with Rabbi Block, Marianne Tettlebaum and other members of the Jewish community. Haman casts lots (purim) to pick a time to annihilate the Jews only to find himself eliminated. A quiet congregant with the right amount of wine transforms into a merry Persian King at a party. Even a cherished object can find its status changed, our recently donated Megillat Esther, moved from a worn metal holder into a beautiful enameled work of art. Last summer, Beth Levi and her family presented the congregation with a Megillat Esther she found among her parents’ possessions after they had passed away. Beth believes the Megillah was a bar mitzvah gift to her father from her grandfather, Rabbi Eliezer Levi. Although the utilitarian case served Rabbi Levi well as he traveled the Pacific during World War II and served various congregations throughout this country, Beth wanted the Megillah to rest in a more attractive case since it’s a gift to our Temple in honor of her parents—Aida and David. After consulting with Rabbi Block about the style of the holder, Beth turned to longtime friend of the family and enamel artist, Evelyn “Evi” Sheffres, and Evi’s cousin, Seymour “Simi” Glantz, a wood and metal sculptor, to work on the project. (Pictured above) MARCH 2015 PAGE 4 “It was a very challenging piece to create,” Evi explained. “Enamel doesn’t like to be shaped into a ring” and breaks easily. In addition, the weight of the material required her to design custom equipment to handle the container. Although Evi felt the festive colors proposed by Rabbi Block were perfect—purple, yellow and green— the particular shade of purple used on the case was new to the artist and she experimented with the color till she achieved the perfect hue. Simi also faced his own project challenges— creating a tight inner liner for the case that didn’t damage the scroll. He also designed the wooden holder and inscribed it with the family name—Levi. “I loved Beth’s parents and I love Beth,” said Evi, "so all the research, sketching and collaboration were completed with joy." "It was like destiny," Evi remarked, "the Temple needed a scroll, Beth discovered the right scroll and Simi and I had the skills to fashion a piece of art to remain with the Temple for many generations to come."
