2 MONDAY 9 MARCH 2015 City Centre CHENNAI For their convenience Vacant land spells trouble What residents at Srinivasa Nagar, Villivakkam want? New toilets to come up in Virugambakkam The Community hall at Virugambakkam that may get new rest rooms soon. A proposal to construct new restrooms in Chennai School and Community Centre at Virugambakkam have been made recently, as part of neighbourhood’s infrastructural development plan. When asked about this recent development, Councillor of 127 Jayanthi (Zone 10), says, ‘we understood that the toilets in the I AN Virugambakkam APAL VAD Corporation School and the Community Centre were inadequate. Hence, I put forth a request to the Corporation for new toilets and permission has been granted for the same. The works for constructing the toilets A will begin soon. Since it will be easier to do the construction work when the school children are not there, we are waiting for the right time when there will be three to four days of vacation together’. The number of students who study in the school has been on the rise recently. The existing restrooms and hand wash basins are inadequate to cater to the sanitation needs of all the children. This new development has met with relief and appreciation from the staff and the students of the Corporation school. People are also glad with the idea of new and clean restrooms in the community centre. Rajan Samuel, Managing Director of Habitat for Humanity said, ‘India stands first in the world in terms of poor sanitation. So we are aiming to tie up with the State government and other corporate companies to build toilets in schools, community centres and individual houses. Hence, the idea to build restrooms in schools and community centres in Virugambakkam is a good one’. s each locality develops and houses and multistoreyed buildings come up on every piece of land. The problem is that neither the person(s), who owns the land nor the local authorities have taken steps to maintain it - which means regular cleaning, says Subramanyam. ‘When people came to know that there was no one to question them if waste was dumped into the vacant plot, residents began to do so, which has led to the present situation,’ he opines. With wild vegetation not being cleared, no one gets an idea about the waste lying around. Hamilton & co gearing up for new season London, Mar 9 (AFP): Even before the first engine roars, Formula One can be heard drawing breath this week in readiness for another year of drama, intrigue and trepidation, starting with the final countdown to the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Fewer cars, teams and drivers will start this year’s championship, one of the sport’s stars is mysteriously missing amid a spiral of conspiracy theories, and, as financial constraints continue to eat into its balance sheets, the global juggernaut that mixes glamour, danger and speed faces an uncertain future. At 84, the sport’s enduring commercial ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone is also under scrutiny. After the tumultuous events in 2014 when Briton Lewis Hamilton seized his second drivers world championship from the clutches of Mercedes team-mate and season-long rival Nico Rosberg in a brutal finale in Abu Dhabi, a similar on-track sporting scenario is in prospect.Pre-season testing has suggested that Mercedes have improved both chassis and engine and extended their advantage. ‘Catch me if you can’ is the most-used headline in the run-up to Sunday’s race at Albert Park where Rosberg was flawless and triumphant a year ago, setting up a duel with Hamilton that shifted through the gears as the story unfolded. I lost focus and got nervous, says Saina Birmingham, Mar 9 (PTI): After her dreams of winning All England badminton championship ended in agony with a defeat in the final, a crestfallen Saina Nehwal said it was her lack of focus and nervousness which led to her loss. Olympic bronze medallist Saina on Sunday let go of a huge opportunity to script history as she squandered an opening game lead to go down 21-16, 14-21, 7-21 to the reigning world champion Carolina Marin of Spain in the women’s singles final. ‘I just lost focus and began hurrying, which was not right,’ Nehwal said after the match. ‘Playing against top players anything can happen at any stage, and you can always get nervous at some point in time. That’s what happened here,’ she added. It was a case of so near yet so far as the World No. 3 Indian failed to emulate her long-time coach Pullela Gopichand (2001) and legendary Prakash Padukone (1980), who Saina Nehwal had won the prestigious title in the past. Just over three months since Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka drove them to an historic title in Lille, i t was a different story without their big two as the Swiss became the first champions in 10 years to fall at the first hurdle. Federer and Wawrinka had chosen to stand aside after achieving their ambitions and the stand-ins were not able to upset the odds against much higher-ranked players despite a heroic effort from 22-year-old Henri Laaksonen. Real Madrid wary of Schalke test Madrid, Mar 9 (AFP): European champions Real Madrid will expect to take another step closer to becoming the first team in 25 years to retain the Champions League when they host Schalke on Tuesday holding a 2-0 lead from the first leg of their last 16 tie. Madrid have strung together 10 consecutive victories in Europe stretch- i n g back to their successful run to their 10th European Cup last season, but have found the going a lot tougher domestically in 2015.Los Blancos surrendered their lead at the top of La Liga at the weekend as they were beaten 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao, whilst Barcelona thrashed Rayo Vallecano 6-1.That was Madrid’s fourth defeat in 14 games this year with coach Carlo Ancelotti admitting he was at a loss to explain how his star-studded strike force of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale has so suddenly gone off the boil. ‘It seems strange to say Madrid have a problem up front when we have scored so many goals throughout the season, but I think it is the truth,’ said the Italian on Saturday. However, captain Iker Casillas has insisted that they won’t suffer a hangover from their La Liga woes at the Bernabeu.‘This competition is different. For Madrid fans it means everything,’ he told the club’s website. Satyam case: Final verdict on 9 April Hyderabad, Mar 9: A special court here trying the multicrore accounting fraud in erstwhile Satyam Computer Services Limited (SCSL) today said it will pronounce its judgement in the CBI-probed case on 9 April. Citing voluminous documents in the case, Special Judge BVLN Chakravarthi said, ‘On April nine, the judgement will be pronounced. If any obstruction is caused it is contempt of (apex) court...it is your (accused) duty to bring your advocates. Court will go ahead with its proceedings,’ he said. The judge’s observation came as defence counsels were not present in the court ostensibly because of the ongoing agitation of Telangana advocates, who have been boycotting courts demanding separate high court for the new state. ‘April nine will be the final date for the verdict. No question of further adjournments. Court will not wait,’ the judge said. During the last hearing on December 23, 2014, the court had said it would pronounce the verdict today. On the possible reason for pushing further the judgement date again, CBI counsel K Surender cited the voluminous documents of the case as well as the time needed for ‘typing the judgement.’ Box: Touted as the country’s biggest accounting fraud, the scam had come to light on 7 January, 2009, after the erstwhile firm’s founder and then Chairman B Ramalinga Raju allegedly confessed to manipulating his company’s account books and inflating profits over many years to the tune of crores of rupees. Police believe she was attacked while on the walkway. She sustained a number of injuries, which it is believed were inflicted by a sharp-edged weapon. Shami, Yadav’s performance de Villiers wicket pumps up Sohail helped me, says Mohit Hamilton, Mar 9 (PTI): He has impressed with his miserly bowling effort in the ongoing cricket World Cup but seamer Mohit Sharma says credit also goes to the new ball bowlers Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, who have put the rival batsmen under lot of pressure. Mohit has got six wickets in four matches but more importantly has been among the most economical of Indian bowlers with an economy rate of 3.90. ‘The way Shami and Umesh bhai are bowling, it has helped me a lot. They have been bowling really well and have been able to exert a lot pressure up-front. My job is to maintain that pressure, so that Ashwin and Jadeja are benefitted from it later on,’ Mohit said at the pre-match press conference on the eve of their match against Ireland. ‘So it helps me a lot that the batsmen are under pressure and my job then will be to bowl to my strengths which I have been doing for the last 10 years.’ Mohit has got wickets with short-pitched deliveries and feels that a lot of batsmen are taken aback Mohit Sharma by the pace of his bouncers. ‘Nobody expects my bouncer to come so fast because it skids as well. That’s a plus for me because my bouncer catches the batsmen off guard and as a result there will either a top edge or they will get beaten. I have been hit for fours and sixes also off my bouncers but that’s how it goes,’ said the 23-year-old Haryana seamer. The Rohtak-born Mohit agreed that although they have bowled well as unit, they do have room for improvement as they are yet to be truly ‘tested’ in slog overs. ‘Well, there’s no limit to doing well, what we have to keep in mind is that we have not yet faced any pressure situation. We haven’t had to bowl in the slog overs and there are other things where we have the scope to do well.’ The youngster also agreed that Seddon Park being comparatively much smaller ground than Adelaide Oval, MCG or the WACA would need to adjust the length on this ground. ‘There will be a difference in your thinking when you have to play in smaller grounds after playing in big grounds for a long time. You will have to change your lines, but we can’t keep thinking too much about the size of the ground. ‘It’s the same for both teams, what we have to do is concentrate on our strength and try and do the best of our abilities,’ Mohit said. Although he was included after Ishant Sharma was ruled out, Mohit said that the time he spent and the match-time he got at Perth during the tri-nation ODI series was worthwhile. Auckland, Mar 9 (AFP): Pakistan paceman Sohail Khan said Monday that taking the wicket of South African master blaster AB de Villiers would inspire him to greater heights at the World Cup. Sohail, who turned 31 on Friday, celebrated his birthday in style a day later when he dismissed the South Africa skipper who was threatening to take the Pool B match away from Pakistan in Auckland. Sohail produced a back of a length delivery which de Villiers edged to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed to end a blistering innings of 77. It was a dismissal that all but sealed Pakistan’s third win in five pool matches, leaving South Africa nine wickets down, before Pakistan-born No 11 Imran Tahir was last man out as Misbah-ul-Haq’s side won by 29 runs. ‘He (de Villiers) was taking the match away, so when I came to bowl with around 30-odd runs left to defend I bowled one full length delivery and then a back of a length and my word, I was thrilled to see he edged it to the keeper,’ Sohail told AFP. ‘It was a big wicket, the biggest of my career so far because his is a big name, the world’s top batsman,’ the seamer added. ‘That helped us win the game and we were all delighted with that wicket.’ Sohail said he believed de Villiers’ wicket would act as as a springboard for further success. ‘Now I have more confidence and I want a five-for in the next game,’ said Sohail of Pakistan’s group-stage finale against Ireland in Adelaide on 15 March. That game will decide Pakistan’s fate in Pool B with Ireland, the West Indies and South Africa also in the hunt for a quarter-final spot behind already qualified defending champions India. Sohail, who took five for 55 in the team’s tournament-opening loss to India, said Pakistan’s bowlers had performed with plenty of passion against South Africa. ‘We bowled as per the plan given to us by the coach (Waqar Younis) and the skipper (Misbah) and bowled with a lot of heart and energy,’ said Sohail who finished with one for 36 in his five overs. He added that if the Pakistan attack maintained that form they would go far at this World Cup. BEFORE THE DEBTS RECOVERY TRIBUNAL -III AT CHENNAI E;/;4"993 ?'()F O.A.
