MEDIA FLOW36 3 After what was a great year for athletics in 2014, we are pleased that the event tasked with keeping up the mo¬mentum our sport has on the continent is the Prague 2015 Eu¬ropean Athletics Indoor Cham¬pionships. Being held from 06 - 08 March, it is the first major athletics championships of the year, following the outstanding Zurich 2014 European Athletics Championships and promises to be the latest in a line of memorable athletics events. It has been 37 years since Prague hosted the European Athletics Championships at the Strahov Stadium in 1978 and therefore a celebration is to be expected the during these European Athletics Indoor Championships. The sheer interest in athletics at this moment in time will ensure that the eyes of Europe and the world will be trained on Prague the whole weekend. I am confident the spectators will enjoy an exciting event, with ideal conditions for all athletes taking part. I know from my many visits to Prague that Czech people love athletics and sport in general and along with the emergence of some fine local athletes, I have no doubt that www.praha2015.org 4 they will fill the arena all three days of the championships to catch a glimpse of the many stars we saw in 2014. I would to take this opportunity to thank our long-standing International Partners: SPAR, Omega, Le Gruyère AOP and Eurovision for their continued support and unstinting cooperation. On behalf of European Athletics, I would also like to thank the City of Prague, the Czech athletics federation and the local organising committee for all their hard work so far in the organisation of the championships. We are all looking forward to another outstanding event, and we are confident that the European Athletics Indoor Championships 2015 - with your invaluable help - will write its own special chapter in athletics history. Hansjörg Wirz European Athletics President heart of europe, heart of athletics Athletics has a long tradition and great reputation in the Czech Republic. important athletic events ever to be staged in this country to Czech athletics fans. This has happened because of the extensive grassroots of the sport, which have been established for many years, but also thanks to dozens of our athletes who have produced outstanding performances over the years and who have become globally recognised personalities, and of whom we are justly proud. Czechs love sport, they are passionate about it and athletics is one of the most popular sports. The 2015 European Athletics Indoor Championships is a major undertaking for us and it is an event not only for Prague but for the whole of the Czech Republic. We have already organised many international athletics events in the Czech Republic. I can recall in recent years, for example, the 2007 IAAF World Youth Championships and the 2011 European Athletics U23 Championships, which both took place in Ostrava; the 2006 European Cup First League in Prague or the 1997 IAAF World Race Walking Cup in Poděbrady. From a historical perspective, we should also remember the 1978 European Athletics Championship, which were hosted in Prague. Organising the 2015 European Athletics Indoor Championships is an honour and a unique chance for the Czech Athletic Federation, and also for our capital city, to show off one of the most The competition will be held in one of the most modern multifunctional arenas in Europe and I believe that the tribunes filled with excited fans that will create atmosphere worthy of the biggest athletics event in this country for the past 37 years. I am sure the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Prague will be a great experience for you and an event you will want to remember. As the Championships organisers, we can promise will do everything possible to ensure you have a good time. Libor Varhaník President of the Czech Athletic Federation and the Local Organising Committee 5 2. CZECH REPUBLIC = FOCUS FOR EUROPE´S TOP ATHLETES World class athletics returns to the Czech Republic. On 05 May 2012, the Council of European Athletics in Sofia, Bulgaria, decided that the venue of the 2015 European Athletics Indoor Championships will be Prague. Czech Republic again will be the focus for Europe‘s top athletes as the championships returns to the Czech metropolis after long 37 years. The last major athletic event on Czech soil was the 1978 European Championships. In 1967, the European Indoor Games, the predecessor of the current indoor championships, took place in Prague. “To gain the organisation of the indoor championships for 2015 was www.praha2015.org 6 really a special and different moment for me,” revealed the president of the Czech Athletic Association Libor Varhaník. “I am glad we will present athletics in the multi-functional O2 arena in different dimension for the crowds, partners and also athletes.” Actually, athletics has a very long tradition in the Czech Republic, it has a great reputation, wide athletic baseline and in the centre of this there is a whole bunch of very succesful and famous personalities; Emil Zátopek and Dana Zátopková, Helena Fibingerová, Jarmila Kratochvílová, Jan Železný or Barbora Špotáková have an exceptional value within the sports world. When it comes to experiences with events organisation, the Czech Republic has seen many events: besides the two biggest annual athletic meetings – Ostrava Golden Spike and Josef Odložil Memorial, it has also hosted a couple of international athletic events in past years. We have to mention the 2007 IAAF World Youth Championships in Ostrava or the 2011 European Athletics U23 Championships in Ostrava, and also the 2006 European Cup 1st League in Prague. The Prague International Marathon is the next event which is strongly connected with this city for the last twenty years. The O2 arena in Prague is also an “experienced” venue for athletic meetings. One of the most modern multi-functional halls in Europe welcomed athletes from all around the world for the first time in February 2009 at the World Record Holders meeting. It was tested for the second time in February 2014 thanks to the meeting called Prague Indoor 2014. For the third time in the history, the best athletes will fight for the valuable European medals. heart of europe, heart of athletics 3.PRAGUE Prague is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The city of Prague, or Praha in Czech, is the capital and also the largest minicipality in the Czech Republic, 15th largest in the European Union. It has been developing for more than 11 centuries. As the historical metropolis of the Czech, it also used to be the capital city of former Czechoslovakia. Since 1920, the official name of the town is the Capital City of Castle was Charles IV. Dating back to the ninth century, it has every year attract millions of tourists from all around the world. The architectonical jewels are well-preserved also thanks to relatively minimal damage during the World War II (unlike many other European cities). Thanks to the rich history, Prague is an important world and cultural centre. Following London, Paris, Rome, Madrid and Berlin, it is the sixth most visited city in Europe. It is a seat of the well-known Charles University and as the cultural metropolis offers dozens of museums, galleries, theatres, cinemas and various cultural institutions. The National Gallery of Prague offers the largest collection of the fine-arts in the Czech Republic. Prague, and since 1784, it used to be the Royal Capital City of Prague. The historical centre with the unique panorama of Prague Castle, the largest castle complex in the world, is the UNESCO world heritage site. Prague Castle itself is spread on the area of 45 hectares. Its main landmark is the St. Vitus Cathedral, the traditional site for the coronation of Czech kings and their final resting. The most important king who had his residence in the Prague been a seat of power for kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman emperors, and since 1918, also presidents of Czechoslovakia and now the Czech president. But the visitors are attracted not only to the Prague Castle. The “obligatory” tourist target is also the Charles Bridge – the most famous, 510 meters long bridge from the 14th century; the Powder Tower on the Republic Square, or the Old Town Square with its famous Prague Astronomical Clock. All these historic sights When it comes to transport, Prague is also the main intersection of the Czech Republic and important crossroad of the Central Europe. It has a vast transport infrastructure what supports tourism. Not only foreigners appreciate hundredths of restaurants, bars and pubs with the tasty Czech beer. Districts like Malá Strana, Staré Město, Žižkov or Nusle are full of good pubs, from which we can mention the most famous U Pinkasů, U Vejvodů, U Tygra, U Hrocha, U Kalicha, U Bansethů and others. Well-known is also the old restaurant U Fleků, whith their own brewery. 7 Prague is also a centre of sport – there are the two biggest Czech athletic clubs: Dukla Praha and USK Praha. Plenty of the world class athletes have found their home in this city, just like the world champions Zuzana Hejnová (400m hurdles), Vítězslav Veselý (javelin throw), Barbora Špotáková (javelin throw), who moved to the capital city thanks to good training conditions. From the athletic facilities, the stadium of Dukla Praha is worth to mention, as well as the Strahov stadium, which used to be the biggest stadium in the world. Now it is mainly used as the training site for the football club Sparta Praha. The largest multifunctional hall is the O2 arena. Prague International Marathon (PIM) belongs among the most important sport events in Prague, just like Josef Odložil Memorial (international athletic meeting), Pole Vault of Prague, Mystic Ski cup (the world skateboard cup) or the Canoe Slalom World Cup in Troja. But it will distribute the athletic medals for the first time in the history. The O2 arena offers more than forty spatial, functional or technical variations of the stage surface and the auditorium. The latest technology available at the O2 arena include, e.g. a giant video cube, internal TV circuit, display facades, its own TV studio, sliding stands, excellent acoustics, light park and advanced telecommunication equipment. The O2 arena, one of the leading facilities in Europe, will welcome the European Athletics Indoor Championships in March 2015. In addition to the standard auditorium, the O2 arena offers non-public floors for skybox and club seat tenants. It also features business areas with necessary facilities, a number of lounges, restaurants and bars along with seminar facilities, press conference rooms and congress halls. The arena was opened in 2004 for the Men’s Ice Hockey World Championships, and after 10 years of existence, it has already hosted almost thousand events (including the concerts of Robbie Williams, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga or the famous Czech pop band Lucie) and it welcomed more than six millions of visitors. The record number of visitors came for the concert of Madonna in 2006, with 18,628 visitors. The biggest sport event so far – the 2004 Men’s Ice Hockey World Championships – was attended by 422,699 spectators over two weeks. O2 arena is located in north-eastern Prague, approximately 10 km from the city centre. It occupies a favourable position between the interior road ring, which provides comfortable transport from other sections of the city, and the external ring road, which allows a quick connection to the outgoing motorway and the international highway network. Thanks to the near metro station Českomoravská and the close bus station, it is easily reachable for the visitors travelling by public transport. 25 In the past, the O2 arena already hosted two athletic meetings; in February 2009, the World Record Holders Meeting saw Russian famous pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva attacking the world record. As a “bonus”, people could see the world record at 2 miles ran by Meseret Defar of Ethiopia. Athletes returned for the second time during the 2014 indoor season, in February, for the Praha Indoor International Meeting. The peak of the event was the two European records: Russian high jumper Ivan Ukhov jumped an amazing 2.42m and local star Pavel Maslák ran 1:00.36 in 500m race. For the third time, athletes will compete in March 2015 at the European Athletics Indoor Championships. Particularly this idea was the core of the whole concept of the 2015 European Athletics Indoor Championships. It is composed within the logo of the championships and the communication strategy comes out of it. The most expressive historical symbol of Prague – Hradčany was composed within the logo. The symbol of Hradčany also enabled to develop the idea: Heart of Europe, heart of athletics. Prague, as the heart of Europe, will host the exceptional athletic event after 37 years, and thus it also becomes the heart of athletics. At the same time, the symbol of Hradčany enables the work with the line which graphically shows the heartbeat and so it is connected to adrenaline during the athletic performance. “The logo development was not easy. But I think we can be proud of the result,” stated the head of the local organising committee and also the President of the Czech Athletic Federation Libor Varhaník. The communication strategy comes out the motto: “From the past to the present”. “Within the ambassador project, we asked the athletic legends for the cooperation and we connected them with the recent athletic stars. We cooperate with them within the PR activities and communication to attract the athletic fans to come to the O2 arena,” described the former world class shot putter Helena Fibingerová. The world champion and the eight-time European indoor champion manages the whole project. A few interesting sport couples have been created within the title “legends from the past, stars of the present”: Helena Fibingerová – Ladislav Prášil (3rd place at the 2013 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Gothenburg) – Emil Zátopek – Pavel Maslák (world indoor champion - Sopot 2014) – Jarmila Kratochvílová – Zuzana Hejnová (world champion – Moscow 2013) –Tomáš Dvořák – Adam Sebastian Helcelet (3rd place at the 2013 European Athletics U23 Championships). 27 16.MEDALS/PATRON 13:22:00 MEDALS The artistic presentation of medals for the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Prague comes out from the concept of the championships. Prague is called the heart of Europe and it will become the heart of athletics at the beginning of March too. The symbol shows the heartbeat of an athlete, but it can also be interpreted as a symbol of Hradcany, the pride of the city of Prague. OFFICIAL PATRON – LITTLE MOLE Patron of the 2015 European Athletics Indoor Championships is Little Mole (in the Czech original called Krtek, or little mole, Krteček). The Mole is an animated character in a cartoon series, created by the Czech animator Zdeněk Miler in 1956. Since its inception, the character won itself an enormous popularity in many Central European countries, as well as India, China, Russia and Japan. The first film called „Jak krtek ke kalhotkám přišel“ („How the little mole got his trousers“) was released in 1956. Production for further episodes started in 1963 and since then, around 50 episodes have been created. official patron www.praha2015.org 28 heart of europe, heart of athletics 17.MARKET SQUARE The European Athletics Indoor Championships will be held in Prague on 05 – 08 March 2015 and the Market Square will be open during this period in the O2 arena and in the adjacent Harfa Shopping Centre (SC Harfa). OMEGA has been involved in athletics timekeeping for more than 80 years. In 1932, its pocket watch chronographs were already considered the most reliable instruments available for measuring worldclass performance at sporting events and OMEGA’s reputation was such that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) asked the firm to supply all sports timing devices for use at the Olympic Games to be held that year in Los Angeles. The company was happy to oblige, and delivered 30 OMEGA chronographs, accompanied by an expert watchmaker, to ensure precise timekeeping and reliable results from all the competitions. OMEGA has continued to develop and deliver state-of-theart sports timing and measurement systems ever since, and at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, it assumed the Official Timekeeper role for the 26th time. Preparations are well underway for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Every year, OMEGA’s experts deploy teams of timekeeping professionals to sporting events around the world, armed with a veritable arsenal of advanced sports timekeeping and measurement equipment. Their innovative systems include starting blocks and false-start detection systems and the latest photo-finish cameras for the sprints and middle-distance events, as well as height and distance measurement devices for field disciplines. OMEGA RECORDS AND DISPLAYS THE RESULTS WITH THE WORLD’S BEST EQUIPMENT OMEGA’s official timekeepers ensure timely delivery of the official results to everyone involved in the www.praha2015.org 30 competitions they support. At the events it serves, OMEGA is also responsible for the competitor displays for the athletes and their support teams along with the public displays to spectators at each venue. The official results are also delivered in real time to broadcast, network and print media who in turn relay results and commentary to remote audiences around the world. Though each event requires a specific configuration of precisely tuned devices and systems, perhaps the most famous of OMEGA’s timekeeping inventions is the photo-finish camera. First developed for use at the London 1948 Olympic Games, these cameras solved the problem of grouped finishes by enabling judges to separate the winners from the runners-up. The OMEGA Scan’O’Vision cameras have evolved continuously over the years and the current version, the Scan’O’Vision Myria, provides more than 10‘000 high-definition images of the participants as they cross the finish line. OMEGA AND ATHLETICS While the number and variety of events make the Olympic Games the most famous, complex and challenging of world championships, OMEGA’s track and field timekeeping experts are busy every year at competitions around the world. In 2014, the brand served as Official Timekeeper for the IAAF Diamond League meets and will assume the timing duties at the European Athletics Indoor, Under 23, Junior, Team and Cross Country Championships in 2015. OMEGA wishes the talented athletes participating in the European Athletics Indoor Championships an excellent event. We look forward to recording their record-setting performances! heart of europe, heart of athletics 20.COMPETITION INFORMATION Participating Member Federations Germany (GER) Netherlands (NED) Albania (ALB) Georgia (GEO) Norway (NOR) Andorra (AND) Gibraltar (GLB) Poland (POL) Armenia (ARM) Great Britain and Northern Ireland (GBR) Portugal (POR) Austria (AUT) Greece (GRE) Romania (ROU) Azerbaijan (AZE) Hungary (HUN) Russia (RUS) Belarus (BLR) Iceland (ISL) San Marino (SMR) Belgium (BEL) Ireland (IRL) Serbia (SRB) Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH) Israel (ISR) Slovak Republic (SVK) Bulgaria (BUL) Italy (ITA) Slovenia (SLO) Croatia (CRO) Latvia (LAT) Spain (ESP) Cyprus (CYP) Lithuania (LTU) Sweden (SWE) Czech Republic (CZE) Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (MKD) Switzerland (SUI) Denmark (DEN) Malta (MLT) Turkey (TUR) Estonia (EST) Moldova (MDA) Ukraine (UKR) Finland (FIN) Monaco (MON) France (FRA) Montenegro (MNE) 31 21.TIMETABLE Thursday 05 March 2015 17:25 Shot Put M 16:30 Shot Put W Q 17:35 800m Pent W 17:00 Long Jump M Q 17:55 Long Jump M F Q 18:00 3000m M R1 18:25 Pentathlon W VC1 18:35 60m H W F Friday 06 March 2015 18:45 Shot Put M VC2 9:45 60m H Pent W 18:55 60m H M F 10:00 Triple Jump M Q Saturday 07 March 2015 10:05 60m H W R1 10:00 60m W R1 10:15 Pole Vault M Q 10:05 Triple Jump W Q 10:32 60m H M R1 10:21 60m M R1 11:00 High Jump Pent W AB 10:49 60m Hep M 11:10 High Jump M Q 11:20 400m W R1 11:15 1500m W R1 11:48 400m M R1 11:50 1500m M R1 12:15 Long Jump W Q 12:00 M 12:20 800m W R1 Long Jump Hep 12:41 800m M R1 13:15 Shot Put Pent W 13:25 3000m W R1 18:00 20:00 Shot Put M Opening Ceremony Friday 06 March 2015 F Saturday 07 March 2015 16:30 High Jump W 16:35 Shot Put Hep M F 16:45 Long Jump W F 16:00 60m H W SF 17:00 Pole Vault M F 16:05 High Jump W Q 17:25 Long Jump M VC3 16:10 Long Jump Pent W 17:50 60m H M VC4 18:00 800m W SF 16:15 Pole Vault W Q 16:25 60m H M SF 18:15 Shot Put W F 16:50 400m M SF 18:20 60m H W VC5 17:10 400m W SF 18:25 800m M SF www.praha2015.org 32 heart of europe, heart of athletics 18:30 High Jump Hep M 18:40 Triple Jump M 18:45 Long Jump 18:50 AB 17:15 60m M F 17:22 1500m M VC18 F 17:26 High Jump M VC19 W VC6 17:35 4x400 W F 3000m W F 17:42 Heptathlon M VC20 19:10 400m W F 17:46 Pole Vault W VC21 19:20 3000m W VC7 17:55 4x400 M F 19:30 400m M F 18:02 60m W VC22 19:37 Shot Put W VC8 18:06 60m M VC23 19:45 3000m M F 18:10 Triple Jump W VC24 20:00 400m W VC9 tbc 4x400 W VC25* 20:07 400m M VC10 tbc 4x400 W VC26* Sunday 08 March 2015 * at final party 11:30 60m H Hep M 12:40 Pole Vault Hep M 14:25 3000m M VC11 14:35 Pole Vault M VC12 14:40 60m W SF 14:50 Triple Jump M VC13 14:57 60m M SF 15:12 800m W F 15:25 High Jump W VC14 15:30 800m M F 15:40 High Jump M F 15:45 1000m Hep M 15:56 800m W VC15 16:05 Pole Vault W F 16:10 1500m W F 16:17 800m M VC16 16:25 Triple Jump W F 16:30 1500m M F 16:55 60m W F 17:05 1500m W VC17 33 22.MAPS www.praha2015.org 34 heart of europe, heart of athletics 35 23.MEDIA FLOW www.praha2015.org 36 heart of europe, heart of athletics 37 www.praha2015.org 38 heart of europe, heart of athletics wel come to pra gue 39 www.praha2015.org www.european-athletics.org
