March – Nutrition Month
How is your appetite? If you live alone,
sitting down to eat a meal by yourself can
be hard.
You may not feel like making a meal for
just yourself, food may not interest you,
or it may not taste as good.
Here are some ideas to help increase
your appetite:
•Choose a comfortable place to eat.
•Exercise or take a walk before
meals.
•Add flavour to your food by adding
herbs and spices.
•Eat meals with family and friends,
if possible.
•Try a new recipe.
•Join a cooking club. If there isn’t
one, why not make one with your
friends!
•Ask your health care provider if
your medications are causing
appetite or taste problems.

Jean Coburn
On Tour with Nancy
What do ice, rocks, Lead, and Skip have in common with Mrs. Jean
Coburn? Everything! These are terms used in Curling, a sport that I must
say I know nothing about. But when I went to Island View Suites to get Jean’s
story, she quickly filled me in on the best Bonspiels (curling tournaments) ever to be
played. She and her husband, Dr. J. Blair Coburn (passed March 10, 2004) played
as teammates when they could and lead their teams to be winners since they began
back in 1961!!! Jean laughed and said she quit curling only two years ago at the age
of 86, but her smile reached from ear to ear as she reminisced about curling, golfing,
and her family. As Jean escorted me through her home, I marvelled at the hundreds of
curling pins that were proudly displayed on her wall.
The Coburns played to win and when it came to curling and golfing, their names were well
known on the circuit. Jean was very modest about it all, so I let the pins and the newspaper clippings
tell their story. Pictures of family smiling back at her, travel photos and memories hung for all to see, and it is without a doubt a walk through her
happy life with her amazing husband Blair and her children.
Jean and Blair met when they were teenagers in Ottawa, but they officially started going together when Jean was 18 on VE day May 8, 1945. The
celebrations in downtown Ottawa were magnificent and for Jean, it was a day she will always remember and cherish. They were married on June
18, 1949 and spent 55 happy years together.
Their four beautiful children, Douglas, Janet, Mary, and John, together with their families, have blessed Jean with seven grandchildren and four
great grandchildren. Jean smiles as she tells me about her children. She keeps telling me that there’s nothing special about her to write about! I
laughed and said, “Really Jean? All I see are pictures of your children and their children smiling back at you with every turn that you make in your
home – and with every step I take, I can feel their love for you, your love for your family, your love for life, your love for fun – and that is what life is
all about! You are truly one very special lady!”
Thank you Jean for your friendship and for sharing your competitive, fun-loving, adventurous self with all of us.
Can’t wait for our next tour….chat soon!
