MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents,
Over the past few weeks, Mt Hira College has hosted the Tea with Teachers in Primary school and the
Secondary Information Evenings. It was a pleasure
and delight meeting the parents that attended and
we really appreciate you taking the time out of
your busy schedule to be involved in your child’s
education.
It was, on the other hand, quite disappointing to
see that many parents did not attend these beneficial evenings, in which teachers had taken the time
out of their busy schedules to prepare so that with
your help and assistance, your child could reach
their highest potential.
It is only through a collegial relationship between
the school and parents that students can be the
best that they can be. It is only by working together that we can ensure that your child succeeds. A
child will not place importance on their education
when they see that their parents are not involved.
A lot of important information is discussed during
these sessions and as expectations and procedures
are ever changing and evolving, these information
sessions are a platform to discuss and be informed
of any changes that may take place.
In future for the sake of your child, I do hope to see
a 100% attendance rate from parents.

Secondary Information Evenings & Handbook
Distribution
Thank you to all of the students and parents who
attended the secondary school information evenings
throughout last week. Unfortunately there were too
many parents who did not attend these evenings across
all year levels. These evenings were important and gave
parents the opportunity to familiarise themselves with
school expectations, events, policies and processes.
Year level handbooks were also distributed to students/parents who were in attendance. The handbooks
include information on subjects, curriculum, policies,
prayer, general expectations, scholarship applications,
leadership opportunities and in the case of our VCE
students it included all VCAA requirements and information about what is required to satisfactorily complete VCE. It was quite concerning that the VCE attendance for these evenings was so disappointing given the
importance of getting off to a good start in 2015.
Attendance at functions such as the information evening are an important consideration for school leadership positions and awards. It also helps to set the tone
for our students and can assist in building an effective
parent, teacher and student relationship. Well done to
the Year 10 students and parents who were clearly the
best attended group overall.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Primary and Secondary Parent Teacher Interviews are
on Thursday 19th March in the second last week of this
term. School concludes at 1pm on this day; the interviews begin at 2pm and finish at 7pm.
Forms will be distributed to students to pass onto parents about this very important evening. In order for
students to achieve their potential it requires a team
approach and effective communication between the
students, parents and teachers. Parent-Teacher Interviews can greatly assist with this process! If you are
unable to attend the Parent-Teacher interviews then
please inform the office so that all relevant teachers
are informed and aware of this. If necessary they can
get in contact with parents or possibly reschedule another appointment to discuss any important areas or
concerns.
Secondary students will need to organise times to meet
with their teachers on behalf of their parents.

Secondary Athletics Day
The Secondary Athletics Day was held on March 4th.
Student participation was a positive aspect of the day
and I was particularly pleased to see students from year
7 to Year 12 volunteering to help organise events. The
toilets, however, were left in a less than desirable state
at the conclusion of the day. Students are therefore
reminded to respect community property. Also, students must remember to dress modestly when attending any College event. Congratulations to all students
who competed to the best of their ability and to the
Yellow House for winning the 2015 Mt. Hira Secondary
Athletics Day.

PRAYER MATS
$5
Students from year 3 – 12 must
purchase a prayer mat from the
school office.
PRIMARY NEWS
Ms. Hulya would like to congratulate her Grade 4
students on receiving their pen license. Well done
to Inaaya Hanif, Atakan Yan, Mujtaba Khan, Insyirah Muhamad-Kadir and Omar Daknach. Keep
up the amazing writing!
It was really great to award Sunni in grade 5S her
RE award this week because she has demonstrated
manners, respect and politeness towards Mrs Erenli
the RE teacher. Keep up the good work.
Clean up Schools Day
On Friday 27th February we had Clean up Schools
Day. The SRC did an amazing job coordinating the
clean up job of the playground and ovals. The
grade who collected the most rubbish was Grade
1B. Congratulations on a fantastic effort. We need
to make a conscious effort to continue to keep our
playgrounds and ovals tidy at all times.
Interschool Sports
The Grade 5 and 6 students are this week competing against Chandler Primary School in their Summer sports. I wish them success and luck in all of
the different sports. The students are really enjoying the program and going to other schools to compete against them in different sports.
Rugby
Last week Miss. Stone organized for the Melbourne
Storm Development team to come to our school to
run an Introduction to Rugby program with our
grade 3’s and 4’s. The class was fantastic, with the
children learning heaps of new skills. It was so
much fun that even Mrs. Hulya started playing.
This was the grade 3-4’s first session, next term the
team will be back to introduce more skills to the
grade 3-4’s. They will also be coming to do an introduction to the preps, 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 6’s.
Mt Hira Jacket, Mt Hira T-Shirt, Navy track suit
pants, black or white sneakers and navy or white
socks. All girls with long hair must have their hair
tied back in either a navy or burgundy hair tie.
Thank you for your support in ensuring all students
are dressed the same.
Athletics Day
Wednesday 11th March is the Primary schools athletics day at Ross Reserve in Noble Park. The students need to come dressed in navy tracksuit pants
or shorts, their house colour t-shirt, white or navy
socks and black or white sneakers to compete
throughout the day. Please make sure that your
child has plenty of water to drink and a healthy
lunch to eat during the day. I invite the parents to
attend and support their child/ren in participating in
the sports day. All students must come to school
first so that rolls can be marked and that the students can then arrive all at the same time and be
allocated properly in their first events. Look forward to seeing everyone.
Prayer Mats
The prayer mats are now available for purchase
from the office at the cost of $5:00. Please ensure
that you purchase one as soon as possible so that all
students from grade 3 to grade 6 have one. Thank
you for your support in this matter. The girls scarfs
will be arriving soon and you will be informed
when they will be available for purchase. There is
a sample in the office area if you would like to see
what they look like.

South East Water
On Tuesday South East Water came to our school
to educate the grade 2s on the water cycle and how
South East Water assists our school. The students
became really involved in acting out and demonstrating the water cycle process.

As part of their Civics and Citizenship area of study, Year 10 Commerce students attended the Parliament
House of Victoria last week to further develop their knowledge and understanding of Australia’s Parliamentary and Legal Systems.
In line with curriculum requirements, the students were able to experience the rich history and significance of both houses of Parliament – the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council – from an educated host.
Students showed great interest in this activity, and were quite inquisitive. They completed an activity
booklet to further apply their understanding of the topic.
This excursion also served as a great introductory activity for those students who wish to continue on
with Legal Studies for their VCE course next year.
Thank you to all the students and teachers who attended, and were involved in this activity.
