Our readings this Sunday provide us with a message on how we can examine our conscience and transform ourselves as we prepare for the passion and glorious resurrection of Christ. I n our Gospel this weekend, we have a dramatic scene were Jesus is seen angry, overturning tables and shouting out “Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” To discover a Jesus angry and one who knocks down the tables is something we seldom see. He is always loving and compassionate and preaches the virtue of patience and forgiveness. But “Why?” … Why did Jesus lose his temper and act in a rage and what is there in us that Jesus wants to overturn and change? The answer to this question is simple. Jesus was angry because the people had dishonored the temple of God which is considered a sacred and a holy place. Just like our own body, we should treat it as Sacred and Holy as it is considered a Temple of God. M y dear brothers and sisters, indeed our body is a Temple of God. Let us not forget that God the Father created our bodies, God the Son redeemed them, and God the Holy Spirit indwells in them. And as St. Paul said to the Corinthians “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God. Therefore honor God with your body.” S o, as we continue our journey during these forty days of Lent, let us clean the temple of our hearts from all jealousy, apathy, hatred, despair and whatever makes us angry and takes us away from our relationship with God. Let us make a firm commitment to honor God’s temple as our body by renewing our lives in holiness, repentance and forgiveness. Fr. March 8, 2015 Page 4-565 Third Sunday of Lent Third Sunday of Lent John 2: 13-25 The readings on this midpoint Sunday of Lent are indeed challenging. We have the Ten Commandments given to Moses and the Israelites, and we have Jesus confronting the status quo in the temple. Perhaps Saint Paul can give us the perspective we need: the Ten Commandments are the bedrock on which we stand, but we proclaim Christ crucified. As we hear these readings today, let us ponder what it means to proclaim Christ crucified in our own lives.
