Take Care of Your Recovery
Having gone through open heart surgery I was unable to remember what or
when I had taken a pill, what my health statistics were or what was going on
with my recovery. My sister generously took time to create a book of forms so I
could write down what I was doing. Thank goodness she did! I have elaborated
on her idea and created a concise collection of forms that all post-surgery patients can easily document the basic aspects of recovery.
Author: Randy T. Olson
I was 50 years old at that time and 15 years later I am doing great! I really can’t
recommend these books enough. Post Surgery Recovery Diary was the first book
with 30 plus pages of forms. Post Surgery Recovery Diary 2 adds 60 plus pages to
continue monitoring statistics. Blood Thinner Management Diary is for documenting Warfarin or Coumadin therapy.

Several of these diaries have been used by clients and friends of
mine over the last year. Each person used them as a central part
of their recovery. As each day progressed they could see how
their healing progressed and memory continued to become
clearer. Each person would take the diary with them to the
doctor to relate their progress. The doctor’s loved the idea as it
chronicled each day’s recovery. Nurses would take the diary and
enter detailed information into the computer. Having day by day
statistics to monitor their progression, aids were very happy to
have access to a accurate and precise reading of the patient.

Blood Thinner Management Diary
Blood thinner management is very important. Your doses have to be in
accordance to the Pharmacist or technician taking the pro-time. Their
recommendations of dosage are necessary to accurately maintain your
INR (International Normalized Ratio). Blood thinner’s are difficult to
regulate because of several circumstance; activity, food, illness and
more. Writing down the time and dose everyday keeps you aware that

About the Author
Hi, my name is Randy,
I am just a normal person who happened to have a serious operation on my heart. I was born
6 weeks premature and immediately came down with pneumonia. My temperature rose to 104
degrees and I was close to death. During those first hours my body heat began to deform my
Aortic Heard Valve. Penicillin was given to me and saved my life. Fifty years later I started to
have symptoms of Atrial Fibrillation causing erratic heart beats. Several test were taken and I
had to have my Valve replaced. Open heart surgery is not easy.
Recovery was a beast! I couldn’t remember when I took a pill, what my heart rate was, my
temperature and all the rest of my statistics. My sister created a book of daily charts for me to
write all that I had done during the day. At the beginning my mother and sister took charge of
all the entries until I was at the point of entering things for myself . Let me tell you, weeks
down the road the diary was the central part of my recovery. I would take it to the doctors
office and show him what had transpired from one appointment to the next. He finally asked
me where I got the diary. I told him. He said “everyone should have one of these”! So… here it
is.
I revamped several items from the original diary to make it easy for anyone to use the forms.
I have given copies of the diary to several of my clients to use for surgical services and they
loved it. Nurses would enter all the information into the computer and the patient would not
have to struggle to remember. They’re doctors, too, asked where they got the books and again
stated “everyone should have one of these when recovering from surgery”.
Give yourself a break and use this Post Surgery Recovery Diary when you have to go through
any serious surgeries. You will not regret it!
Sincerely, Randy T. Olson
