Dear Virginia Chance School Family and Friends,
!Live from Louisville, it’s Saturday Night…featuring our guests, YOU, in support of Virginia Chance
School and “You look…mahvelous!”
!Thank you so much for being here! I hope you have a wonderful time—enjoying the time with
other parents, grandparents, and friends so please “talk amongst yourselves.” Then I hope you win some
unique items during the silent auction and outbid others on those very special items during our
live auction. !I hope you are so alive tonight and committed to your children and their school that your bids are
frequent and high, knowing that you are not just getting fantastic items, but more importantly,
you are helping your child and Virginia Chance School. The Auction is the second major fundraiser
of our year—that means we depend on the monies raised tonight. Your attendance here and the
items you will purchase make it possible for our school to turn dreams into realities and for your
child to benefit in every area. So “ve just vant to pump…YOU UP!”
!Tonight we will also do something very important and significant for the children of Virginia
Chance School. We will have a special time during the live auction when your bids will make it
possible for children of all socio-economic levels to be a part of our school. The Mary Maple
Financial Aid Fund means children whose families cannot afford a Virginia Chance School
education will get to learn and go to school just as your own children do. It means your child gets
a more diverse community of learners as we open our school to other children and their families.
Our goal is for the Mary Maple Financial Aid Fund to double in size to enable more children to get
this extraordinary independent school education and you will make a difference by helping us
reach this goal. “Well, isn’t that special?” !Please join me in thanking Trish Fleischman and Theresa DeFilippis, our Auction Chairs! They are
“two wild and crazy girls” who have put in many, many months of work to produce this show and have
done an outstanding job! Thank you to all the wonderful parent volunteers who worked to make
tonight a reality. Brookes Pope, our Development Director, and I are most grateful for you and to

MARY MAPLE FINANCIAL AID FUND
!
On the night of March 7th, it is our goal to elevate the Mary Maple Fund to heights it
has not seen before. To do this, we want you to know a bit about this VERY important
resource for our school.
!
Who was Mary Maple?
Mary Maple was a Virginia Chance School parent with three children who started our
school as preschoolers and graduated from the program: Justin, Adam and Meredith.
Mary was an involved parent, like you, who drove on field trips, helped with class
parties and helped her children with homework. She volunteered to help in the office,
sub in the classroom and go on the End-of-the-Year Trip. Mary lost her battle with
cancer in 1995 before her children had graduated. Mary, Mike (her husband), Justin,
Adam and Meredith loved Chance School. Because her whole family believed in the
mission of the school, the Maple family established the Mary Maple Financial Aid
Fund in her memory. Mary’s memory and positive impact on the children and families
of Virginia Chance School continues today.

Why the need for the Mary Maple Financial Aid
Fund?
Part of Virginia Chance School’s mission is to attract and retain a diverse community of
learners. The Mary Maple Fund underscores the school’s commitment to making
Virginia Chance School accessible to families, regardless of their ability to afford this
extraordinary independent school education. More families than ever need financial
help to send their child to our school. In fact, the amount of financial aid awarded has
almost tripled over the last five years. Each year, this fund provides need-based tuition
assistance to approximately 17-22 percent of our students. Financial aid is critical to
maintaining socio-economic diversity in our school, and we must remain available to
families to stay true to the values we want to instill in our students. Some families
make dramatic sacrifices to send their children to Virginia Chance School, and even a
modest amount of financial aid can have a meaningful impact.

How can you help?
As is our tradition at our Auction on the night of March 7th, we want you to get to
know and be a part of the Mary Maple Financial Aid Fund. We want you to know who
Mary Maple was; we want you to hear the impact her life has on our school and
students through that Fund; and then we want you to give at whatever level you can
to ensure its continued health and growth. !

Buy a ticket for $10 and you could be the one to share the wealth on Auction
night. The “pot” will be split 50/50 between Virginia Chance School and one
lucky winner. The more tickets sold, the bigger the pot. Tickets will be sold
until 8:00 p.m. on Auction night. The drawing will be held at 8:40 p.m., just
prior to the Live Auction. Tickets may be purchased in advance and are
available in the school office and the Development office. Winner does not

1. The Live Auction will begin at approximately 8:45 p.m. and continue
without interruption until all items have been auctioned.

2. Please remain silent during the Live Auction so the people around you may
hear the auctioneer. !
3. To bid on an item, raise your bid card with the number plainly visible to the
auctioneer.
!
4. Keep track of your purchases in your catalog. This will help settle any
disputes that may occur.
!
5. As you leave the Auction, get your personal invoice at Checkout and pay for
your purchases. You may pay with cash, a check made payable to Virginia
Chance School, Visa or MasterCard. If your purchases total $500 or more,
you may pay in four equal payments: one the night of the Auction, and the
other three on the 15th days of March, April and May. With your invoice,
proceed to the Live and Silent Auction areas to pick up your purchases.
Please take all purchases with you on Auction night. Arrangements may be
made at Checkout for delivery of oversize items.

6. In the event of a disputed bid, the auctioneer will be the sole judge, and he
retains the option of restarting the bidding. His decision on any matter or
procedure will stand, and all sales are final.

7. Unless otherwise specified, all Auction items must be used within one year
of the date of the Auction. Dates and times must be arranged at the mutual
convenience of the donor and buyer.

1. The Silent Auction opens at 6:00 p.m., and section closings by room begin
promptly at 7:45 p.m., as posted in the Program section of the catalog. !
2. A minimum bid will be specified on the first line of each bid sheet. Increased
dollar amounts are listed for each subsequent bid, based on the value of the
item. Dollar amounts increase up to approximately double the stated value
of the item. !
3. To bid on an item, write your bidder number CLEARLY next to the dollar
amount that you wish to bid. You may bid a higher dollar amount by
selecting a dollar value farther down the list, and drawing a line down to
that amount, where you then write your bidder number. (That will make it
easy for other bidders to see where the current bid is and prevents a dispute
later.)

4. When the Silent Auction closes, a member of the Auction Committee will
circle the last amount bid on each bid sheet. No bids written beyond that
point will be counted. !
5. As you leave the Auction, get your personal invoice at Checkout and pay for
your purchases. Your invoice will show any items where you were the
highest bidder. You may pay with cash, a check made payable to Virginia
