The Parson’s Post
John 20:1-10
In John 20:1-10 John tells an interesting story about how Peter and he
reacted to the news of Jesus’ resurrection. Mary returned from the empty tomb,
and told them Jesus’ body was gone; and they took off running! John speaks of
himself in the third person. If he was telling it in the first person it might sound
something like this: “I outran Peter and stopped at the entrance to check it out.
Peter came up behind me and never stopped. He just ran right in!” To me that
scene must have seemed like something out of the Three Stooges. One can
almost imagine Peter nearly knocking John out of the way to get through the
narrow door.
I recall a backyard campout when I was a kid. All of us neighborhood boys
got together with makeshift tents and appliance boxes in my back yard.
Sleeping bags and junk food were strewn everywhere around us. We were also
convinced some of the older guys were going to raid our campout. So we
posted lookouts, were prepared with water balloons, and reacted to every
unusual sound. Knowing our heightened state of alert, my father hit on a plan.
He kept a rubber monkey mask on hand for its surprise effect on
unsuspecting relatives, cranky daughters, and golden opportunities just like this.
Donning his monkey mask, overcoat, and a dark bedspread he literally crawled
around the house to a tree on the other side of the yard. Then he began a low
growl and rustled the lower limbs of the tree. The lookout performed
admirably. He flipped on his flashlight and pointed the beam right at the
intruder’s face.
Perhaps you can imagine the effect it had on our lookout when the light
caught that monkey face gaping out from the formless shape of the overcoat and
dark spread. The lookout promptly dropped his flashlight but was too scared to
holler. He literally fell into our tent babbling something unintelligible. Another
guy picked up the light, saw the same sight and stopped dead in his tracks,
unable to move. The lookout finally got his voice back. He sounded like a
hysterical madman speaking in tongues; and we finally caught enough of it to
make out the word, “monster”. Then he bolted for our back kitchen door.
That was enough for me! I bolted right after him, and I hit the back door two
steps ahead of him. But he was in full “fight or flight” mode! Pop said our feet
only touched the ground a couple of times. Before I could grab the door handle
he shoved me off the steps into the nandina bush. For years after,
there was a bend in the nandina bush where I landed.
When I think of Peter and John running to the tomb on that first Easter
morning that is the kind of “run” that comes to mind. Can you imagine
what thoughts must have been racing through their minds—and whatever
was going through their minds must have pushed their feet that much
faster!
What?
Is our Lord’s body gone?
Why is it gone—did someone take it?
What was that he was saying about rising again the 3rd day?
Could it really be that He is alive?
What does it mean?
The Gospels tell us that Jesus had already been teaching his disciples
that he must go to Jerusalem, suffer many things at the hands of the
religious leaders, be rejected, beaten, and ultimately put to death—and
that He would rise again on the third day. It had not happened yet, and
the disciples had no way of knowing what it meant. Furthermore, with
all the popularity He seemed to have among the people it must have
seemed like a far-fetched prediction.
Now we know what it meant. Now we know exactly what was
happening. Now we know that because He lives we shall live also.
The Bible tells us that he has purchased for us “a far more exceeding and
eternal weight of glory”.
We are now within a month of Easter; and knowing what we know
now it would seem that we would have the same kind of excitement
building within us with the coming celebration of His resurrection. So,
between now and Easter I’ll just leave you to think a little about what
effect His resurrection should have on us. Wouldn’t it seem to you that
the very thought that He has “begotten us again unto a lively hope”
should bring the same rush of excitement?
In Christ,
Rick

The BackPack Weekend Food
Program is the outgrowth of an
extensive study of the nutritional
needs of school-aged children in
Gaston County over the weekend
especially during the school year.
Hunger and improper nourishment
interferes with a child’s development,
education, and socialization. Students
who come to school hungry cannot
learn.
This study was done by
Carolyn Niemeyer, working with Gaston County Schools. Based on statistics
from nutrition facts published by the Gaston County School System 20102011, 22,523 free and reduced lunches and 8,296 breakfasts were served to
57% of the total school population of 32,225 students. Since 2007, the
percent of students receiving free or reduced lunch has increases from 47%
to over 57% to date.
The BackPack Weekend Food Program is designed to create
partnerships between local churches or organizations and a school to provide
selected students a bag of non-perishable, nutritious food that they can eat
over the weekend. The students selected for the program are recommended
by school counselors, social workers, teachers, school nurses and principals.
These students are the ones most likely to be hungry on the weekend.
It was decided that the BackPack Weekend Food Program would
begin on the elementary schools. Each elementary school was contacted to
determine whether the school already had a weekend food program in place,
and if not, was there interest in such a program for their students. There
were 17 schools designated as Title 1 schools. These schools have the highest
number of students who would benefit by being involved in a back pack food
program.
The project was fortunate to have the support and guidance of
Gaston Memorial Hospital and Caromont Health. The chief dietician of the
Continued on next page

hospital designed the menus based on the caloric needs of the elementary
school aged children. CaroMont Health offered the program the ability to
purchase the food items in bulk under their Premier purchasing level with a
wholesale food company. The initial cost per child was set at $3.00 per day.
The food bags were to be distributed for either a 2 day or 3 day weekend.
Gaston Memorial Hospital became the first organization to become a school
partner. They were able to provide 105 food bags per weekend to an
elementary school in the Title 1 category from October 2011 to June 2012.
The hospital continued their school partnership for the 2012-2013 school
year serving 111 students.
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Pastor Brack East and the Church
Council supported the project. Pastor East offered to serve as the 501-©-(3)
tac exempt entity and also provide the treasurer for the project. Pastor East
offered a storage room in the Parish Life Center to house the total food
inventory as well as the food for Holy Trinity’s partnership with an
elementary school.
After a presentation of the project at a meeting held at the hospital
many churches and organizations were given the opportunity to participate
in the project. Holy Trinity Lutheran Church became the first partner. The
school year (2011-12) closed with the project being able to partner all of the
identified elementary schools with 19 churches and organizations. A total
of 387 students were given weekend food bags through these partnerships.
November 2014, Pisgah ARP Church
joined this valuable program.
We sponsor one child financially, and act as the distribution center for
a total of eleven students at Rhyne Elementary School.
The monthly food order is picked up and stored at Pisgah, and
weekly is packed for individual use and delivered to the school.

Ann Teague
The Suzanne Elliott Circle met on February 2, 2015 at 7:00 PM in the
lounge of the Elliott Center. Carolyn Ashworth, Circle Chairman,
welcomed the 14 members who were present, and opened with some
thoughts from Grandma, You Rock!. Barbara Oates did our
devotional from Daily Guideposts 2001, using a selection entitled,
“Love Covers a Multitude of Sins”. Suzanne Elliott did our Bible
Study from Opening Up Titus by David Campbell.
Ann Teague read the minutes from our January meeting, and they were
approved as read. A thank-you note from McKenzie Messer was also
read. Suzanne Elliott gave the treasurer's report. We made $27.25 on
the sale of our first Mid-Week desserts.
Karen Goodwin had a birthday on February 4, 2015 and Carolyn and
Dan Ashworth celebrated their anniversary on February 7th.
Valentine cards were passed and signed for our Sunshine Friends and
College Students. Judy McCarthy's newsletter was reviewed. Our
circle voted to support the projects from the PWM Planning Session
held in January.
Our circle will be responsible for Mid-Week desserts on February 11th.
Kay Robinson will be our Hostess and do devotions in March.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned with the
Mizpah benediction.
At the close of our meeting, Barbara Oates served delicious
refreshments.
Rachel Boyce Circle
Evelyn Spearman
Our Rachel Boyce Circle met in the lounge of the Elliott Center
on Sunday, February 1st at 2:00PM with nine members in
attendance. Our chairman Jeanelle Bumgardner welcomed us on that
cold Sunday afternoon and opened in prayer. She again gave thanks
to Rebecca Howe, Belinda Lewis and Judy McCarthy for their
exceptional presentations at our January joint circle meeting.
Evelyn Spearman read a Valentine’s Day devotional with
quotations from I Corinthians and from the apostle Paul. The words
of these prophets help us to understand the real nature of this
“thing called love.” I Corinthians states, “and if I do not have love, I
am nothing.” “Love is kind; it does not envy; it is not puffed up; it
does not seek it’s own; it’s not easily provoked; it thinks no evil; it
does not rejoice in iniquity. But love does rejoice in the truth. It
bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things and endures all
things. Love never fails.” The apostle Paul tells us that real love
does the right things for the right reasons. Real love has certain
unmistakable qualities, which will always stand the test of time.
Suzanne Elliott gave our bible study on Chapter 2 of “Opening
Up Titus,” entitled, The Profile of a Christian Leader. Around the
time of 64 AD, the apostle Paul left his friend Titus behind in Crete
to appoint leaders to all the churches there to put things back in
order. Paul referred to these prospective leaders as elders,
overseers and stewards. Paul said that an elder was a familiar figure
among the Jews, where they would preside, direct and govern their
people. An elder would also be an overseer, having oversight of a
congregation. A steward would a wealthy master that would be
charge of his household or business. This was a position of wisdom,
faithfulness and trustworthiness. Paul gave required qualifications
for these leaders. An elder must be exemplary both morally and
spiritually. An elder must be above reproach as well as faithful to his
wife. He must also be a good father, where his children are obedient
to their father’s will. However, an elder should not be overbearing,
arrogant or quick-tempered. Eldership requires patience and the
ability to give a gentle answer that turns away wrath. An elder
should not be given to drunkenness nor be violent, but rather have
a peaceful and gentle disposition. He must be disciplined and a
Rachel Boyce Circle Continued
Evelyn Spearman
master of himself, rather than being a slave to his appetites, drives
or desires. Lastly Paul concludes on his list of qualifications insisting
that an elder must be sound in the faith, encouraging others by
sound doctrine and refuting those who oppose it. Unreserved
commitment to foundational doctrine is a non-negotiable
prerequisite for such a vital ministry. We must settle for nothing
less. And on a personal note, Rebecca Howe was proud to share
that she now lives with a full houseful of elders. She announced to
us that this morning her son Mark was just installed as an elder at
his church in Texas. Her son Kenny is currently serving his second
year as elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Gastonia. Big Ken
has been serving as a spiritual leader at Pisgah for many years. It’s
been said that Ken has been an elder even before Pisgah had elders.
Thank you Rebecca for giving us a perfect (personal) anecdote to
conclude this month’s bible study.
Belinda gave her treasurer’s report and is still waiting for the
new yearly circle budget report to be published this month.
Therefore we will make decisions for our circle’s allocations next
month. Jeanelle reviewed the February PWM newsletter. Our circle
will have midweek desserts February 4th and 25th. Pisgah’s
Valentine’s Supper will be on February 14th. We marked our
calendars for next month’s events for Kitchen Work Day on March
10th and announced that the date of the workshop to make gift
items for the Bonclarken gift shop will be in March or April. Jeanelle
reviewed the recommendations for all Pisgah’s 2015 programs and
activities. Judy McCarthy asked each circle to discuss and vote on
these items. Jane Falls made a motion to accept the
recommendations from the planning committee. All items were
seconded and approved. Cherrie Weaver wrote in the newsletter
that the residents of Heritage Oaks were thankful to us for thinking
of them with our Christmas gift bags. Evelyn will remember our
Sunshine Friends and college students. Jeanelle dismissed our
meeting as we recited our Mizpah Benediction. Dot Clark treated us
to her famous Red Velvet cake with our refreshments. Our next
meeting will be March 1st with Helen Boyd and Jeanelle Bumgardner
as hostesses.
