Après Hobbyhorse, an additional hour from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, is available for an additional charge. Children who stay for Après Hobbyhorse have the opportunity to do homework, participate in quiet games, listen to a story, or work on a computer. Hobbyhorse is open to Nightingale-Bamford students in Classes K–IV and St. Bernard’s students in Classes K–III. Students may enroll on a prorated basis after the sessions have begun, space and other conditions permitting. The winter session will begin on January 5 and end on March 12. Monday workshops will meet for eight sessions (additional hour $115), Tuesday and Friday workshops will meet for nine sessions (additional hour $125), and Wednesday and Thursday workshops will meet for ten sessions (additional hour $135). Enrollment is limited, and we urge you to register promptly. Fees include all supplies and must be paid in full upon registration. No refunds will be granted after the first scheduled workshop. Please make all checks payable to the Nightingale-Bamford School. Financial aid is available. Saturday Sports Club will be available at St. Bernard’s for boys and girls in Classes K–VIII from January 10–March 7, 2015. Skill development, fair play, sportsmanship, and team spirit will be emphasized. No advance registration is necessary; children who wish to participate should arrive in sneakers any Saturday at St. Bernard’s (4 East 98th Street) and enter through the black door closest to Fifth Avenue. Students staying for the full day must bring lunch. Icky! Science Experiments Kelly Qualman Classes K–II (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $415 In this science class, we will conduct experiments that are sometimes icky, sometimes smelly, sometimes creepy, and sometimes all three! These experiments will be hands-on, messy, and safe. We’ll create plasticbag bursting chemical reactions and gooey slime. Wear a smock and come ready to get dirty. Ice Skating Amanda Espy, Hai Dan Fan, Susie Heller, Lizzy Linton, Marica Mayuzumi, and Kelly Qualman Classes K–IV (limited to 56) 3:15–5:15 p.m. Tuition: $550 (lesson $225) Come skate with us at Wollman Rink! Bus transportation to and from the rink is provided; students will be dismissed from Nightingale at 5:15 p.m. If you wish to include a half-hour figure skating or hockey lesson for your child, please add $225 to the regular fee. In case of inclement weather, the children will play games at Nightingale. Payment for any lessons canceled due to inclement weather will be refunded. (Please note that refunds will not be given for student absences; the refund policy only applies if we cannot go to Wollman Rink.) We are hoping for good weather! Chess Shernaz Kennedy Classes K–IV (limited to 15) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $660 Come join this fun workshop— no previous knowledge of chess is necessary! From the beginning you will learn the moves, principles, strategies, and tactics of casual chess play and serious competition. This workshop extends beyond the activity to underscore the art of logical reasoning more broadly. Students emerging from this workshop will become good problem solvers and naturally develop a tough-minded confidence that will stay with them throughout their lives. Mexican Treats Joel Hinds-Ortiz Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $415 Chef Hinds-Ortiz and his little chefs will be warming themselves up this winter by cooking and tasting wonderful Mexican treats. They will make guacamole, quesadillas, burritos, tacos, and much more. Podcasting and Digital Storytelling Fernanda Winthrop Classes III and IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $415 Has your young NPR fan ever dreamed of making her own This American Life or StoryCorps segment? Master interviewing, researching, and editing, and learn the art of podcasting and storytelling using the iPad to build a digital database of audio (and some visual) adventures. The Mystery of Magic Joel Rappelfeld Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $500 Be part of the mystical and exciting world of magic. Every week the Kids Action Sports Magic Gurus will introduce the apprentice magicians to a few different tricks. They will be able to impress their friends and family with various card tricks, disappearing coins, sleight of hand, and more. We supply the materials and expertise, you bring your enthusiasm. Gaga Eileen Saguirer and Jeanne Finnigan-John Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $520 Gaga is a fast-paced, action-packed dodgeball game from Israel. Players use their hands to bat the ball and bounce it off the walls as they try to hit other players below the knees. The object of the game is to be the last one standing. Gaga is lots of fun and a great way to burn off energy. Puppet Drama Nicola McEldowney Classes K–II (limited to 15) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $520 Learn to make your very own puppets and perform with them onstage. Students will learn what puppet theatre is in its many forms, and then we will work as a group to create and perform a puppet play for our friends. ThurSDAYS January 8, 15, 22, 29 February 5, 12, 19, 26 March 5, 12 Arts and Crafts from All Over the World Amanda Espy Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $520 Get ready to discover different cultures around the world! We will learn about a variety of communities and what makes each of them special and unique. In this class, we will create arts and crafts that reflect each of the cultures that we will study. Creative Fun with Photoshop Caroline Hastie Classes II–IV (limited to 8) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $520 In this class, we will use Photoshop image-editing software and scanning tools as we learn to enhance and manipulate digital photographs. We will also experiment with creating images without a camera. A digital camera is useful (be sure to bring the cable too) but not required. Those who have participated in this workshop previously will experiment with more advanced techniques. Homework Study Claire Anderson Classes III and IV (limited to 15) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $520 This is a time to get your homework completed before going home. Miss Anderson will be available to answer questions you might have. What a great a way to begin the evening! Magical Musical Theater Dominique Grelsamer Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 3:15–5:00 p.m. Tuition: $520 Students will discover various aspects of musical theater through improvisation, theater activities, vocabulary, and fun facts about the genre. As an ensemble, we will learn music by deconstructing a song and then staging it with choreography. friDAYS January 9, 16, 23, 30 February 6, 13, 20, 27 March 6 Painting Our Planet Jo-Anna Roach Classes K–IV (limited to 12) 2:20–4:00 p.m. Tuition: $470 All continents will be explored as we choose our favorite location in each. We will draw and paint the North and South Poles, Nile and Amazon Rivers, Gobi and Sahara Deserts, and many more amazing destinations containing wonderful artistic surprises. Perspective, proportion, and color mixing will receive special focus in this workshop. Let’s go travel! Take Me to the Water Glenn Pepper Classes K–IV (minimum of 5) 2:20–4:00 p.m. Tuition: $540 Swimmers will be grouped according to their abilities. The instructor-tostudent ratio is 1:3. The focus of the program will be on instructional swimming, with time allotted for water activities. The children will be transported to The Monterey, located at 175 East 96th Street, and will be dismissed from there at 4:00 p.m. STAFF Naomi Hayashi and Susie Heller will co-direct Hobbyhorse this winter. Susie Heller has been a member of the Nightingale faculty for 39 years. She is a graduate of Nightingale and received her BS from Skidmore College. Her interests include sports, needlepoint, photography, and travel. Naomi Hayashi has worked as both a Kindergarten and Class III homeroom teacher at Nightingale. A graduate of New York University, she enjoys singing, reading, and running in Central Park. They will be assisted by two Lower School teachers, Claire Anderson and Hai Dan Fan. Claire Anderson is an alumna of Nightingale and a Class IV homeroom teacher. She is a graduate of Kenyon College and received her MS from Bank Street College of Education. She enjoys outdoor activities in all seasons. Hai Dan Fan is a graduate of Binghamton University and is a Class II homeroom teacher. She enjoys traveling, ice skating, and knitting. recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, and her work has been shown throughout the Northeast and in Europe. Amanda Espy received her BA from George Washington University and a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from New York University. Amanda is an alumna of Nightingale and teaches Kindergarten. She has traveled to many places all over the world with her family and loves learning about diverse cultures. Lizzy Linton is a Nightingale alumna and a Kindergarten homeroom teacher. She received her BA from Washington and Lee and her MSEd in early childhood education from Bank Street College of Education. Lizzy loves working with children, as she finds their curiosity inspiring. A figure skater in her elementary years, Lizzy is looking forward to spending time on the ice with the Lower School students. Jeanne Finnigan-John holds a BS in dance/ community health education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has been a member of the Nightingale faculty for over 20 years, teaching dance in all divisions and running the varsity dance program. Dominique Grelsamer is a Nightingale alumna who received her BM from The Boston Conservatory and her MM from NYU in vocal performance. With a passion for musical theater, Dominique looks forward to exploring this genre of music with the students! Caroline Hastie is the Middle and Upper School photography teacher at Nightingale and has been at the school for 14 years. She received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College and her MFA from Hunter College. She is the Joel Hinds-Ortiz is the head chef at Nightingale. Prior to joining our kitchen, he worked at St. David’s, Argentelle Catering, and Special Events and Entertaining Ideas Catering. He enjoys teaching all his recipes to the children. Shernaz Kennedy is one of America’s leading chess teachers. She instills in students the means to unlock the secret of the world’s greatest game. In 1987 she was ranked number two on the US Olympiad Team. She has started chess programs at a number of schools, including Browning, Buckley, Trinity, Dwight, and All Souls Church. She even helped World Champion Bobby Fischer in his successful comeback match in 1992. Marica Mayuzumi received her BA and MA in teaching from Simmons College in Boston and works as a Kindergarten teacher at Nightingale. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors, both in nature and in the city, and is ready to take to the ice as the temperature continues to drop outside. Nicola McEldowney is a professional actress, director, and puppeteer. She also works as a substitute French teacher at Nightingale. She has a BA in French from Columbia University and recently completed a master’s program in theatre at the University of Paris, Sorbonne-Nouvelle. Glenn Pepper, a graduate of the New York Institute of Technology, has been involved with many swimming activities. He was the aquatic director of the Nassau County Parks Department and is currently the director of Swim Time, Inc. and Take Me to the Water. Kelly Qualman is enjoying teaching Class IV homeroom at Nightingale-Bamford School. She is a graduate of Emerson College and Harvard University. In her free time she enjoys baking, writing, and riding her bike in Brooklyn. Joel Rappelfeld operates Kids on Wheels and Kids Action Sports. His teachers have been enjoying working with children and teaching skating, sports, and a variety of creative classes for over two decades. Jo-Anna Roach has taught Chinese and Japanese brush painting and calligraphy to Classes I and III at Nightingale for the past 14 years. An Acadia University graduate, she has lived, studied, traveled, and taught throughout Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, and India. Eileen Saguirer is a physical education teacher at Nightingale. She received her BS in kinesiology from Penn State University and her MA from Adelphi University. Eileen enjoys participating in many sports, especially volleyball and karate. She has studied Seido Karate for over 25 years and holds a fifth degree black belt. Fernanda Winthrop is a Class III homeroom teacher and a Nightingale alumna. She received her BA from Harvard University. She wakes up to NPR every morning and falls asleep to it every night. Her iPhone simply does not have the storage for any more podcasts! She is looking forward to helping the tech-savvy girls of Classes III and IV channel their inner Ira Glass. Bring on the stories!
