THE VUE FROM THE GREENS
After unseasonable conditions to start the winter months, February reminded us all
that Old Man winter will always have the last laugh. The month was full of cold temps, wind
chills and snow events. The Greens Department has not slowed down, however; as we
have made continued progress on our winter projects, equipment repair & maintenance and
accessory work.
When able to brave the elements and venture on the course, we have placed continued focus on cleaning and thinning wood lines to improve aesthetics and growing conditions throughout the
property. Clean-up to the right of #6 has finally been completed from tee to green as a result of the remaining
debris from the major tree removal project a couple of years ago. The wood line to the right of the path on #5
received some TLC from the gulley to the green to improve light and playability for those wayward tee shots. Finally, attention was given to the right side of #2 tee complex. Work had begun on thinning the wood line between
#2 and #3 green over the past couple of seasons to improve much needed airflow to #3 green. Working off that
line, we removed the underbrush, vines and small diameter trees along the entire wood line towards the back tee.
The end result drastically improved the aesthetics for a popular spot on the course for golf and entertaining with
“dining with a Vue”. In conjunction with a tree company, work is slated to begin on #3 during the first of March to
remove four large oaks (two in gulley, two by the green) that have encroached into the line of sight and shot angle
for the hole. In addition to the tree removal, the contractor will remove several limbs on the two oaks that frame
the tee complex and the staff will work on thinning the wood line to the left of the green and continue down the left
side of #4 tee complex.
The unbearable days to be outside have given the opportunity for the staff to be well ahead of the game
when it comes to equipment repair & maintenance along with touching up accessories as we look forward to the
start of the season. The progress on the maintenance buildings unfortunately has been affected by the weather;
the below freezing temperatures have prevented the ability to pour concrete in both structures along with the internal plumbing and electricity of the Chem/Fert building. However, both buildings have been erected and all the
trench work for the plumbing/electricity has been completed. The past month has provided many educational
sessions for myself and the assistants on the local, regional and national level. Continuing education is important
for staff development, staying current with the trends of the industry and exploring ways to improve the operation.
Topics have included prevention of winter damage, tournament preparation, resistance and control of pests effecting Poa, tips to summer management and long/short term planning. All talks were informative and served as
additional tools to have in the holster as we continue to improve on a day to day basis.
March will serve as a busy month for the staff if weather can cooperate. The plate is full with wrapping
up the tee projects on #5 & #17, phase two of the collar and intermediate project and hopefully the start of aerification towards the end of the month. As always, check the blog and follow us on twitter for updates. Till then,
think of spring and stay warm out there!

GOLF TIPS FROM THE PROS BY DEREK DEJIDAS , PGA
How Al Czervik Can Help You Improve Your Putting
Caddyshack is hands down my favorite golf movie of all-time, as I’m
sure it is for some of you. I’ve watched it more than I care to admit,
each time discovering another subtle nuance that makes me enjoy it
even more. I’d like to share with you something that I noticed in the
film that may help you with your game, particularly your putting.
Al Czervik, played by Rodney Dangerfield, has a putter with a scope
on it that was given to him by Albert Einstein. Humor aside, the thing
that jumped out at me was that Mr. Czervik set the putter behind the
ball, aiming the face of the putter before taking his stance. This is
something that all good putters do on each putt, including every tour player I have ever
seen. The direction that the putter face is pointing at impact is more than 90% responsible for the direction that the ball rolls. Due to this, it is vitally important to aim the putter
face first, and then build your stance around the club. I assume it is no coincidence
that Mr. Czervik rolled in his ball into the hole!
Conversely, I noticed that when Judge Smails addressed his 5-foot putt on the 18th green,
he took his stance before he placed his putter behind the ball. Maybe this is why Al Czervik bet him $1,000 that he would miss the putt, which Judge Smails proceeded to do before becoming angry and throwing his putter aimlessly onto the club porch where people
were dining!
Another thing that we can learn from Al Czervik that will help us on the putting green is
attitude. It is very evident to see that above all Mr. Czervik enjoyed playing the game.
Being in a positive mindset and having the ability to ignore the consequence of every
stroke is a powerful thing, especially when it comes to putting. Golf is just a game, so be
sure to enjoy every swing no matter how high the stakes are…even if there is no gambling at Bushwood!

THE ROBERT WHITE TOURNAMENT IS BACK!
The Robert White Tournament is back and better than ever! The traditional Governors Cup
event has been replaced by the very popular Robert White event. This five nine-hole match
play event will be held June 18 - 20, 2015. The price for the event will be
$525.00 and provides a great opportunity to showcase our beautiful golf
course while entertaining a friend, family member or client. Look for more
details to come, but put the date of June 18 - 20 on your calendar now!
GOLF OPENING PAR-TEE - WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8
Start the golf season with a special Opening Par-tee, on April 8. All
the information on the coming season’s events, golf course updates
and USGA rules will be shared along with a great dinner. The Chef
has translated all the elements of golf into a great menu. There is no
penalty for the water hazards as you enjoy shrimp cocktail and baked
oysters. Swing by the practice range station and enjoy anti-pasta, crudité with dip and a
cheese display. Create your own green at the putting station with an assortment of salads.
The only slice you will see from the cart path is carved turkey and ham with rolls and condiments. Our bunkers and rough are filled with gourmet “sand wedges”, and fairway sliders.
Enjoy some out of bounds treats with pretzel sticks and beer cheese, nachos and mini
quesadillas. The sand trap will entice you to try a “par-fait” and other delights. And you can
always wind up at the 19th hole and enjoy a drink of your choice. The price for this evening
is $25.00 per person. You won’t need a cart to travel around to all the great food stations.
Come out and enjoy time with your fellow golfers in anticipation of a great season. The
evening is sure to be a hole-in-one! Cocktails begin at 6:00 p.m., informational meeting at
6:30 p.m. with dinner to follow. Reservations please: 412-793-2232.

LVC TO HOST THE PRESTIGIOUS LESLEY CUP IN SEPTEMBER
The Lesley Cup was originally conceived as a triangular contest between Massachusetts, Philadelphia and Metropolitan New York. Eventually Eastern Canada joined the ranks. Each year,
these four “districts” enjoy competition at the best golf clubs in the Eastern United States and
Canada. The Tournament is named for Robert W. Lesley, President of the Golf Association of
Philadelphia from 1902-1921. This year, Longue Vue, in conjunction with Oakmont Country
Club, will join the ranks of Merion Golf Club, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Winged Foot Golf
Club, and Royal Montreal Golf Club, in hosting the Lesley Cup. U. S. Amateurs who have
competed in the Lesley Cup include William C. Fownes, Jr., and Francis Ouimet. We will share
more with you on the Lesley Cup throughout the golf season in anticipation of this legendary
tournament.
