ODENTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Ms. Tracey Ahern, Principal 410-222-6514 Mr. Pete Thompson, Assistant Principal 410-222-6516 (fax) I am so excited for March to arrive: I love starting the month with a celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Our 3rd Annual “Vocabulary Parade” is on Monday, March 2nd @ 2:30 pm. Parents are invited to attend – pick a word and participate in the parade. Remember, one of our SIP action steps is to build vocabulary skills – we have been focused on vocabulary all year, now we are going to have some fun with vocabulary. Activities are planned each day to celebrate reading! Friday is Crazy Hat Day and 3rd MP Interims go home. Don’t forget that clocks spring forward on March 8th! M testing is here! Students in grades 3-5 will participate in a weeklong testing. 5th grade will test March 9PARCC 13, 4th grade will test March 16-20, and 3rd grade will test March 23-27. Testing will begin promptly at 9:30 am. The PARCC tests will consist of 3 days for reading and 2 days for math. Students in grades 4 and 5 will take their tests on the computers. If you would like to learn more about PARCC, please follow this link for parent webinars and practice tests. The MSDE site has a lot of valuable information to prepare us for the new tests. Congratulations to Ms. Kolonsky, who was nominated for the West County Teacher of the Year award. Welcome to our newest group of Goucher undergrad interns for the spring semester: Charlotte Hoffman (Mrs. Miles), Abaigael Guthrie (Mrs. Sylvester), Mackenzie Brown (Mrs. Hudson), Hannah Du Bow ( Mr. Morris), Colleen Mc Cawley ( Ms. Hunt) and Jamie Morris (Mr. Campbell). We are excited to put them to work with our students! Mark your calendars…Wednesday March 11th OES takes over the Green Turtle in Waugh Chapel. Stop by any time (lunch, dinner or carry-out) and a percentage of sales will support our Playground initiative. Then on Wednesday, March 25, from 4-8 PM join us for another fundraising opportunity at NEWK’s in Waugh Chapel. A percentage of sales will support school learning initiatives. Are you ready for the Science Fair? Time to get working… Science Fair projects are due on April 15th. Our Annual Science Fair/Book fair night will be held on April 16th. If you need to purchase a science board, we sell them at school for $4.00. Please see Ms. Babcock in the office. Congratulations to Mia Jung, Madison Chim, Anthony Manzanares, Cierra Johnson, Hannah Walker, Olamade Olajide and Joshua Park. They were selected to perform at the Arundel Instrumental Music Festival with students from all of our cluster schools! Congratulations to the following students – they have been selected to display artwork in the Youth Art Month Library Show at the West County Public Library: Layla Moseley-Jones, Jaiden Elseth, Brian Xie, Arwen Duncan, Aphaia Plater, Autumn Lashmet, Nash Kumia, London Golas, Austin Du, Wala Yagoub, Peyton Origlio, Teagan Kelleher. Just a friendly reminder, students perform better when they arrive to school on time and ready to learn. Students need the time to prepare for the day by getting materials ready, asking questions, and socializing with peers. When they are late for school, it is difficult to get “on track” and ready for learning. If your student eats breakfast in the morning and is a car rider/walker, please try to arrive as close to 9:00 am as possible. We begin instruction at 9:20 am and students should have finished their breakfast by that time. Students who arrive at 9:20 are considered tardy. Tracey L. Ahern Principal The Anne Arundel County Public School System does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, religion, age, disability sexual orientation or familial status in matters affecting employment or in providing access to programs .V-Soft by Raptor Ware-Thank you for your continued support in providing a safe environment for our students and utilizing the V-Soft system at Odenton. Every visitor must have a tag. Please remember you must check in the office upon entering and check out in the main office before leaving. Odenton Elementary School is equipped with a video camera system. It covers selected interior and exterior public portions of the building and grounds. It is NOT monitored constantly, but it is monitored during emergency situations. During certain events, when the safety or security of students may be in question, authorized personnel from local, state, or federal police or fire emergency units may be given access to view images projected on the camera system. If you have any questions about the system, you should call the Supervisor of School Security at 410-222-5083. “MARCH NEWS” March 2nd-2:30 PM Read Across America Dr. Seuss Vocabulary Parade March 4th-Girls Night for Grades 3-5 at 6:30-7:30 pm March 5th-Game Club-3:50 to 4:50 March 6th-Interims sent home March 6th-Crazy Hat Spirit Day March 7th-Zumbathon at Transformations from 2-4 pm March 11th PTA Green Turtle DAY March 12th-Game Club 3:50 to 4:50 pm March March 19th-Game Club 3:50 to 4:50 pm March 20th-Arundel HS play at Odenton-2:30 pm March 20th-PTA Spring Dance 6:30-8:30 pm March 25th - NEWK’S Night March 26th-Game Club 3:50 to 4:50 pm March 30th-April 6th-Spring Break Page1-Principal’s Message and Calendar Page 2-3-School News Page 4-Out of Area Flyer Page 5-6-Family Involvement Conference Flyer Page 7-8Reading Connection Page 9-13-Awards Page 14-Guidance News Page 15-Every Student Flyer **Parents: please be aware that the MealPayPlus plan for student lunch accounts has changed to mypaymentsplus.com** -this is a wonderful program that keeps you updated on your student’s lunch account and even notifies you when it is time to add more funds!
