the EHS Lionette Elites
competition team was
awarded the Grand
Champions award for its
performance at Caney
Creek High School. So

individual routines, the
lowest score judges gave

Midlothian welcomes
new nursing facility

Ellis County seniors have a new place
to go to receive skilled nursing treatment.
On Thursday, the Midlothian Chamber of Commerce welcomed Midlothian
Healthcare Center to town with a grand
opening ribbon cutting.
The facility, which will hold 120 residents, has three living there now, and
specializes in nursing and rehabilitation.
The building, which began construction
nearly a year ago, will welcome more
residents if it passes routine state inspections.
Terence Boyd, the owner of MHC said
the company is family owned and operated. His brother and business partner,
Greg Loudermilk, a Midlothian resident,
will work as administrator. MHC is the
third nursing and rehabilitation center
Boyd has opened. He owns one in Fort
Worth and one in Houston.
The services offered to residents vary,
and MHC says that rehab programs are
customized to fit the specific needs of
each person.
“We are different from an assisted living center in that we have nurses working 24 hours,” Loudermilk said. “We have
some residents that will come and will
never be able to leave.”
Those people include diabetics that
aren’t able to take care of themselves and
people with injuries and health-related
issues they won’t recover from.
The facilities at MHC include a physical therapy room, state-of-the-art bedrooms for residents, a large dining room,
three day rooms for lounging and an outdoor area with shade cover and a fountain. One employee said there will be a
grilling area outside soon, as well. Part
of the dining facilities is a private dining
room for parties or visiting families.
Boyd said there will be many people
from Midlothian taking residence in the
new home, but he welcomes everybody.
“We will definitely take anyone God
gives us,” he said.
Lifestyle amenities include a beauty
and barber shop, an activity room and
a number of activities uncluding crafts,
cooking and baking, musical presentations and field trips.
Physician services include dental,
podiatry, audiology and optometry, and
nurses offer full services.
“The people we intend to serve are the
senior citizen population,” Loudermilk
said. “We look forward to having more
residents.
Boyd, who lives in Flower Mound, will
be moving to Midlothian.
“We love it here in Midlothian. My
family will be moving here. We have fallen in love with the area,” he said.

medical coverage.

record-keeping requirements for department heads attending the session,
which was held at

According to Paul Perry, county
commissioner, the one-hour workshop, which was attended by nearly 50
people, contained critical information
about the ACA, as it will be required
of all county employees.
“We are about to begin applying
ObamaCare and we are trying to be
compliant with the requirements,” he
said.
“The workshop went well,” he
added. “There wasn’t any contention.
It wasn’t about whether or not you
agree with the Affordable Care Act. It
was informative and was a productive
meeting.”
He said Price led the session in a
lecture format and allowed for questions. Price is also a Texas Association of Counties Employee Benefits
consultant.
“All department heads and anyone
who handles reporting for the county would benefit from attending the
workshop,” said Perry.
“It’s important that the county, as a
large employer, stay abreast of changes in federal healthcare laws which
might have an impact on our operations and our bottom line,” said Carol
Bush, county judge. “A failure to be in
compliance could result in penalties.
As such, we requested that the Texas
Association of Counties send a representative to update us on the relevant
changes.”
The Affordable Care Act will require the county to offer medical benefits to employees who work an average
of 30 or more hours per week. A measurement period will be established as

David Santos, age 58, passed away in Ennis on February 3, 2015. He was
born in Ennis on October 11, 1956 to Charlie Esquivel and Ernestine (Martinez) Santos. He married Sharon Kay Ritchey on April 18, 1980. He was a
beloved husband, father, grandfather (pawpaw), uncle and friend, and will be
greatly missed. He always kept up with family and extended family, wanting
to know how they were doing in sports and school. David
enjoyed spending time with and spoiling his grandson, Desmond; sports, especially baseball and football, reading the
newspaper, and doing crossword puzzles, BBQ’ing outdoors
and deer season. He enjoyed deer processing with his brothers and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughter Hollie;
grandson, Desmond; brothers, Danny and wife Brenda of
Waxahachie, Jerry and wife Nancy of Ennis; sister, Cynthia
Brazier and husband Gerald of Rice; and numerous nieces
and nephews.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Ernestine Santos;
and nephew, Clint Santos.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. on
Friday, February 6 at Boze-Mitchell-McKbbin Funeral Chapel in Ennis.
Graveside services and interment will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb.
7, 2015 at Saint Joseph Cemetery in Ennis, with Father Antonio Ormaza officiating.

most powerful forces promoting
diversity in worship and leadership.
There isn’t much room for diversity “in what we call ‘one-cell’
churches, with about 85 members
or less,” he noted. “However, it’s
much easier for believers of different races to blend together in a
large, growing church. ... That’s a
trend we will need to keep watching in the future.”

SAGU adds 14 on Signing Day

Signing day 2015 is in
the books and 14 high
school seniors have
made commitments to
be a part of the Southwestern Assemblies of
God University (SAGU)
football team.
“I am really excited about the character
of the young men that
have signed. We have a
great group of returners and these guys will
complement our veterans well,” said new football head coach Frank
Tristan.
The Lions expect to
add more players this
spring and summer.
Members of the NAIA
and the Central States
conference, SAGU will
begin camp in August
with over 100 players.
The 2015 recruiting
class will bring in nine
offensive players and
six defensive players.
According to Tristan,
this group’s quickness
is a big positive.
“The athleticism of
this recruiting class is
the best we’ve had in
a while. They will increase our overall team
speed.”
SAGU went 4-6 in 2014
after winning the CSFL
title the year before. All
home games are played
at Lumpkins Stadium
and are televised online
in HD.

‘Little Women’ charms at Ennis Public Theatre

Anyone who has read
Louisa May Alcott’s
“Little Women” will
immediately
appreciate the charm of Ennis
Public Theatre’s stage
adaptation. Running on
weekends through Feb.
15, Little Women presents a glimpse into 19th
century America and
the struggles, fears, sacrifices and hopes of four
sisters who are left for
a year without mother
and father.
Alcott’s novel addressed not only family life and coming
of age, but also dealt
with themes of social
expectations and gender roles. By carefully
crafting her characters,
Alcott adeptly presents
her own potentially
scandalous views of
womanhood in a manner that avoids the controversy that comes
with championing radical change. The talented
cast in EPT’s production effectively captures
this tension.
The beautifully rendered set enhances the
drama and draws the
audience into the action. Jordan Parks gives
a lively performance as
Jo, the strong and willful young tomboy who
has little use for social
conventions and seeks
to live life by her own
rules. The character of
Jo was patterned after
Alcott’s own life, and
represents many of
her iconoclastic views.
Jordan does an excellent job of inhabiting
Alcott’s feminist character.
In contrast to Jo, Meg
accepts the role that society places on her. As
the eldest of the four sisters, Meg already views
herself as a woman and
works to meet all preconceived expectations.
Krystal Strickland aptly
portrays Meg, who provides a necessary calm-
ing and motherly influence over Jo. Krystal’s
performance also compellingly conveys the
burden associated with
assuming the parental
role at such an early
age.
The two youngest
sisters in Alcott’s story, Beth and Amy, are
played by Olivia Grayson and Cierra Chapman. Olivia does well as
the kind and sweet Beth,
presenting yet another
contrast to Jo’s brash
and sometimes hot-tempered demeanor. Cierra
portrays the youngest
sister, Amy, with great
aplomb, creating clever
comic effect in the presentation of her vain,
self-centered character.
Amy strives to excel,
but falls short with humorous blunders.
The rest of the allfemale cast also stay
true to Alcott’s characters and present the
audience with a warmhearted tableau of an or-

and triumphing over difficult times. The play is
suitable for all ages, and
provides the audience
with ample opportunity
to reflect on the vicissitudes of life and how one
might deal with them.

Beauty is ‘Skin Deep’ in new play

A romantic comedy,
“Skin Deep,” opens at
7:30 p.m., Friday, at Theatre Rocks at 505 N.W.
Main St.
The play is a lighthearted affair, with a
thoughtful
message
about society’s view
of beauty and worth.
It was written by playwright Jon Lonoff.
Leading the cast is
accomplished stage veteran Lisa Rosewell, who
has delighted audiences
by her work in Steel
Magnolias and The Lion
in Winter.
Rosewell
portrays
Maureen Mulligan, a
lonely woman, who is
nudged into giving romance one last chance
by her attractive sister, Sheila, played by
Debra Hinson. It seems
only natural that Sheila
would set up Maureen
on a blind date.
Years before, Maureen had sacrificed a
possible
relationship
with one of her charming dental hygiene patients by introducing
the lovely man to her
sister Sheila, who subsequently married him.
Sheila’s
husband,
played by Larry LeMaster, is a keystone
character. His goldenboy looks led to Sheila’s
desperation to keep him
interested, and to Maureen’s wistful remembrances of “what might
have been.”
Enter blind date, Joe
Spinelli, who sets everyone on their heels. Joe
is a breath of fresh air
in Maureen’s life. But,
how much fresh air can
she take? Is she willing
to risk her staid existence and gamble on
love again?
“Skin Deep” will explore all the questions
raised, and the audience will be brought
along for the ride of romance, decisions, and
discovery.
Film actor Michael
Hall won the part of
Joe. His most recent
project was The Merchant, a western horror,
feature-length film shot
on location in Gilmer,
Texas. He is represented by Linda McAlister
talent. Hall said he is excited to be back on stage
and making his debut at
Theatre Rocks.
