Here is something you can do for Israel today!
As American Jews we frequently
feel frustrated that we can’t
do more to help Israel. We do
what we can: we support UJA
and AIPAC, we visit as often as
possible and express our solidarity when bias rears its head in
the media or in the UN. But for all that we do, we are always
on the lookout to be able to do more. Well, the current
elections for delegates to the World Zionist Congress is a
simple and tangible way to do something significant that
not only strengthens Israel but also strengthens the kind of
Israel most of us would like to see - one that is pluralistic,
Jewish and democratic.
If you would just take a few moments of your time and vote
you can make a difference. Voting will remain open until
April 30, 2015. You can vote in one of two ways: online:
www.voteMERCAZ.org or by submitting a paper ballot.
Copies of the paper ballot are available in the synagogue
office during the week or in the lobby outside the sanctuary
on Shabbat. There is a $10 fee to vote. This charge covers
the cost of the elections and the infrastructure of the
American Zionist Movement. Payment can be made online
or by check. You can also vote online by going directly to the
http://myvoteourisrael.com/ website. Remember to vote for
MERCAZ – Slate #2.
Theodore Herzl founded the World Zionist Congress
in 1897 in Basel, Switzerland and it has been convened
regularly ever since. Since Israel was founded in 1948, these
congresses have been held in Israel every five years. The 37th
Zionist Congress will be held in Jerusalem this coming
October 2015.
The World Zionist Congress is based on the belief that
Israel is truly a project of the entire Jewish people and its
success has implications far beyond the citizens of Israel but
also impacts Jews the world over. American Jewry sends
145 delegates, by far the largest contingent from a single
country outside of Israel. We comprise about one third of
all the elected representatives. The decisions of the Congress
influence hundreds of millions of dollars in funding,
funding that is critical to the determination of the kind of
country Israel will be and also more specifically funding
that is critical to the existence of our Conservative/Masorti
communities in Israel and around the world.
Simply put, the more votes the MERCAZ slate receives,
the more influence we have in shaping WZO policy. A
vote for MERCAZ allows for our Conservative/Masorti
communities in Israel to live the lives we take for granted
in the United States, where Conservative conversions are
accepted without question, women can read Torah proudly
and without fear, and egalitarian minyanim are celebrated.
It also translates into critical support for fledgling Masorti
communities throughout the world, particularly in regard to
providing opportunities for our youth.
MERCAZ currently holds 58 seats in the Congress, roughly
11% of the elected delegates. We can do much better than
this if more of our American Conservative Jews would just
take the time to vote. MERCAZ is only as successful as you
are willing to make it. If you vote, MERCAZ will succeed.

Purim and the Magic Kippah
Some of you may have heard about
the Israeli barber, Shalom Koresh,
who invented the “magic” kippah.
This kippah, designed in response
to recent anti-Semitic resurgence is made of either real or
synthetic hair and is meant to blend into someone’s natural
hair. One who wears the magic kippah does not have to
compromise between his/her religion and safety, since it
does not draw attention to one’s Jewish identity.
On the one hand, it saddens me that the world has come to
this. It saddens me that observant Jews cannot openly express
their Jewish identity. And, a part of me wonders whether
the invention was more about commercial gain (they cost
anywhere from $56-$91 each!) or about responding to the
needs of religious Jews who feel unsafe. I hope the latter.
On the other hand, I think this invention is brilliant. It’s a
creative way of getting the best of both worlds. Observant
Jews can have the peace of mind knowing that they don’t
stand out necessarily in a crowd. A study conducted by
the European Union in 2013 found that one in five Jews
avoided wearing a kippah or other Jewish symbols for fear
of being harassed or attacked. So why wouldn’t we respond
to those statistics with a safer alternative?
As we approach the holiday of Purim with the increase of
anti-Semitic acts all around the world, we are reminded of
what it means to hide our true selves. Purim is a holiday of
hiding, a holiday of concealment. We read in Megilat Esther
that Esther did not reveal herself to King Ahashverosh right
away. The phrase “Esther did not reveal herself ” is repeated
not once, but several times. It was not until Esther had won
over the king’s heart so much, that she felt safe to reveal her
true identity – to reveal her Jewish ancestry.
We often see or think of Purim as a holiday when we try
on a new persona. We wear costumes, which allow us to
explore what it might be like to fill the role of another
character. For one full day, we marvel at the world through
the eyes of someone else.
But I often wonder: is Purim really about being someone
we are not? Or, is it an opportunity for us to explore who we
really are in safety?
On an average day, are we always authentic to our true selves?
Do we always show who we really are? When someone asks
how we are doing, even if we are experiencing an incredibly
difficult situation, we might nonetheless respond with, “I’m
good, thanks.” Sure, you could say that we respond this way
because it’s the norm; people don’t want to hear our baggage.
But there is a part of me that thinks that we respond this
way because we don’t feel entirely safe.
On the door to my office there is a sign that says “LGBT
Safe Space.” It was left there by my predecessor and I,
without hesitation, kept it there because it’s important to me
that people of all gender identities and sexual orientations
feel welcomed and supported. But I now wonder if I should
change that sign. Perhaps my sign should read something
like this:
“Everyone is welcome, regardless of faith, gender identity,
sexual orientation, age, race, belief…whatever. This is a safe
space and you are welcome to be your full, true self here…
baggage and all.”
What do you think I should add to my new sign? What are
the areas in your life that you don’t feel “safe” to talk about?
And more importantly…How can I help?
I’d love to think that we could end anti-Semitism by always
being conscious of representing Judaism in a positive light,
by always being humble representatives of the important
virtues for which we stand. But I’m not naïve. People will
inevitably believe what they want to believe.
But there is something that we can do. In the spirit of
Purim, in a world where others are jeopardizing our safety,
let us create safe spaces for others. Let us welcome people
to be their true selves and share their painful stories and
secrets: those who experience domestic violence, those with
addictions and…the rest of us, all of us.
Purim is a call for safety. It welcomes us not necessarily to
be the person we want to be, but to be who we already are.
May this Purim be one where we can all safely and openly
be our true selves.

TBS IS MORE THAN
JUST A SYNAGOGUE
We made it through half of
January a little smug thinking,
or should I say hoping, that
we would make it through the
season without snow. But once
again, winter has proven to be so cold and unwelcoming.
Tu Bishvat has just passed, a time when many people plant
trees, but we were busy shoveling snow. TBS is always
prepared to handle the harsh weather, but more importantly
TBS is always a warm and welcoming place.
Our annual Purim carnival will be on March 1st. It’s always
a fun event sponsored by our PTA. Many of our members
come dressed in their best Purim garb as a practice run for
the Megillah reading on March 4th. Everyone leaves with a
full stomach, many prizes and if you’re truly lucky, a goldfish
or two.
Member spotlight: Susan Lipper
Susan has been an integral part of the TBS family for over
25 years. She and her husband Gil raised their daughters in
all of the TBS schools and programs. Susan has been a part
of many committees including the Board of Ed. But what
sets Susan apart is her zest for bringing warmth through
our greeters program. Every Shabbat when you enter TBS,
you are always greeted by a member of the TBS family.
Thank you Susan for all you do.

restaurant run by the local Chabad. Most people go to Italy
for the wonderful local food. My family does as well but
always welcomes a good kosher meal.
As winter turns to spring we will rejoice in the season
of renewal and this is the perfect time to renew your
commitment to TBS. Try to attend a Shabbat service or
sign up for a TBS program or enroll your child in The Beth
Sholom Summer Program. There are so many ways to be
part of the TBS community.
The Joshua Society is a perfect way to commit to the
future of TBS. You have already received a mailing about
the program and many members have reacted in a positive
way with a strong financial commitment. We welcome your
input and hope you will choose to be part of this important
initiative to secure the future of TBS. Our chairs, Pearl
Halegua and Louis Naviasky welcome the opportunity to
walk you through the program in detail.
Travel spotlight: Kosher food in Italy
CLUB TBS
On January 10, 2015, more than 125 guests attended the
sixth annual Club TBS, “A Chance to Dance”. The evening
was a fun filled evening of dancing, casino games, vendors,
raffles, a silent auction and delicious food. There was
something for everyone, and all had a fabulous time.
Traveling with three boys always has its challenges when
keeping kosher. The vegetarian route can get old fast when
your kids crave a good steak or hamburger. Who would
thinks that in Italy where the food is so delicious, our three
kosher meals would be so memorable. In Rome, the kosher
quarter is right behind the Grand Synagogue with an array
of kosher fare. In Florence, next to the Great Synagogue
of Florence, is a vegetarian restaurant where the falafel is

great job with the centerpieces. Grandstand Sports and
Seth Forrest made the silent auction so easy and profitable
for us. Great Neck Games made the Casino such a big hit.

OF CANTOR BARNOY
Winter. Snow. Sleet. Cold. Some
people love it and some people
don’t. Personally, I am not a winter
lover as I am more of a “warmth
and sunshine” worshiper. During
winter, I yearn for the summer. Winter, for me, is just so….
depressing! The skies are gray, the trees look dead and just
stepping out your door means bundling up from head
to toe. So I just trudge along right now, looking forward
to that glorious time called springtime, when all comes
springing back to life!! The skies clear up, the sun comes
out to shine, the colorful, cheerful birds come back, the
trees fill with gorgeous green leaves again and the air fills
with the wonderful and aromatic scent of budding flowers.
And the best thing about spring is that it signals something
even more glorious rounding the corner – summer!! The
best season of all!! A season filled with trips to the beach,
vacationing and respite. I find nothing more satisfying and
relaxing than hopping in the car, flipping open the sunroof
and gliding down the highway as the sun gently warms you
with its rays. But what I realize as I write this is that God
loves us all the same – which is why he provided a season for
each of us to love in our own way. I have no doubt that many
of you disagree with my summer-loving dreams because
you are enamored with the fun winter has to offer. Skiing,
snowboarding, ice-skating, hockey and many other winter
sports can make winter lots of fun for those who love it which is why God is brilliant!! Each one of us has our own
season to love. In conclusion, we would all be wise to enjoy
everything that every season has to offer because that’s what
God intended. That said, I still can’t wait for springtime to
arrive!!!!!

was no foul play, she won fair and
square! All the students, teachers,
and Rabbis celebrated the festival of lights with sufganiyot,
driedels and gelt, latkes, and learning
We had a very interesting program in the month of
February. D'Vorah Biderman, a recent NYU graduate and
North Shore Hebrew Academy Alum, has been working
with a dental mission in Uganda to educate, encourage, and
provide dental services for the Jewish community there.

is coming in to speak to our students about the situation in
Uganda, Africa and the Jewish community she met there!
March is a month full of exciting programming at MBS!
Due to inclement weather we had to move our February
2nd Gimme 10 anti-Semitism program to Monday, March
16th. We have two speakers coming in from StandWithUs,
an organization that supports Israel around the world. We
will be attending a teen rally on Long Island to support
Israel and stand up against anti-Semitism in the spring.
Monday, March 2nd we will be having an optional costume
party for Purim. Students are encouraged to show off their
most creative costumes for a fun-filled Purim celebration.
On March 9th we are bringing the Israel Defense Force
to MBS! Israeli Soldiers from Great Neck Krav Maga
are coming in to give our students Krav Maga lessons
(the Israeli art of self-defense.) “Real-World Krav Maga is
a street-ready studying program, which reflects the aim and
the focus of the school’s training, which is to prepare students
to deal with common situations of violence and dangerous
confrontations that they may encounter.” Our students will get
a taste of what training in the Israeli army is like. Speaking
of taste, we are having a chocolate seder on March 30th for
Pesach. Should be a deliciously educational night!

It won't be long before the trees
and bushes start budding and we
see the return of our "feathered
friends". Spring is on the way! In
the preschool, the
celebration
of Purim is a good time to
remember and recall how
acts of courage, bravery and
a belief in our convictions
sustained us.
The sounds of Purim
songs and stories enhance
our enjoyment as we learn
about the heroes of the
holiday. Our children create
groggers, shalach manot baskets,
Purim decorations and bake delicious hamentashen. Our
festive parade throughout the building is led by our children
who are so excited about wearing their Purim costumes,
singing Purim songs and sharing shalach manot with the
clergy, and the office and
maintenance staff. And
what better way is there to
celebrate Purim than with
a carnival featuring games,
crafts and festivities!

this month is "Art In The
Afternoon", which will be
held on Sunday, March 15.
The children, our "budding
artists", are busy decorating
canvases duplicating many
artists and are using their
creativity to make Judaic
Building Blocks in the Two's
items and so much more!
We are very excited about this annual fund raiser with
raffles and silent auction pieces too. Please stop by the
Early Childhood Center during the week of March 9 to
view and purchase tickets for our raffle baskets with many
items donated from generous local vendors. You have to be
"in it to win it".

On Sunday, March 1st from 10:00
am to 1:00 pm, we will be having
our annual PTA Purim Carnival
which is open to the community as
well. Arts and crafts activities, funfilled game booths, raffle prizes, and
refreshments will be in store! Wear your Purim costume and
plan to have fun! We are grateful to our PTA Presidents,
Debbie Dubowsky and Lisa Berger for their hard work and
effort.
March 8th we will have a program sponsored by the Friends
of the IDF (Israel Defense Forces). Students from grades
Daled (4th), Hay (5th), Vav (6th) and Zayin (7th) will have an
opportunity to meet Israeli soldiers and learn about their
experience in the Israeli army. There will be a question and
answer time and interactions with the soldiers.
Also on Sunday, March 1st our Vav and Zayin students
will have a unique opportunity to entertain the seniors at
the Gurwin Assisted Living Residences in Commack in
honor of Purim. The students will be bringing with them
beautiful art pieces which were made by our Daled, Vav
and Zayin students under the direction of our creative art
teacher, Hava Shilon.
Torah Godly Play Workshop
On Sunday, March 22nd, our fifth graders will have the
opportunity to go to the Masbia Food Pantry in Brooklyn
and prepare dinner, from soup to nuts, for the needy families.
This is a wonderful hands-on Tikun Olam experience.
Fifth grade parents are encouraged to attend this trip along
with us.
Pajama Day Fun at TBS RS!
Join us for the Purim Megillah Reading on Wednesday
evening, March 4th. Come in your costume and be ready
to shake the grogger to celebrate Purim with your TBS
community! Please bring macaroni and cheese boxes

WORLD ZIONIST ELECTIONS
Please note that Jim Schlesinger is on the Mercaz slate and
would appreciate your support.
It is not often that each vote counts as much as they do in
this election. Please step up to the plate and register and
vote NOW.
The World Zionist Elections have now begun. Your vote
for the Mercaz slate will ensure that the Conservative
Movement will continue to receive a proportional share
of the funds expended by WZO to American programs in
Israel. It will also be a vote that demonstrates that American
Jews want to end the tyranny of the chief rabbinate and the
extreme right wing over religious life in the state.
The rules for voting are simple and as follows:
1. All American Jews who turn 18 by the end of June
2015 are eligible to register.
2. General registration and voting starts January 13th and
ends on April 30th.
3. Registration and voting may be done either online or
by mail. If begun online, it must be completed online;
if begun by mail, it may be completed either by mail or
online. 4. For those who are participating in the elections online,
it is a one-step process to register and to vote. Once
they have submitted the registration form with their
email address and paid by credit card, they will get an
email with a link to the voting site. They will receive an
email confirmation of registration only after they have
completed the voting process. mail may receive a paper ballot and vote by mail. 6. People who don’t receive their mailed ballots by
mid-March should send an email to [email protected] or call (844) 413-2929 to request a
ballot. During the voting period, if anyone requires a
replacement mail ballot, he/she must call (844) 4132929. There is a $10 fee for replacement ballots.
7. Those who register by mail-in paper forms may opt to
vote online provided that their email address has been
listed on the paper form.
8. If you have any questions about registering or voting,

Dear Friends of Ramah,
We are happy to announce that we are now accepting a
small number of applicants who have not attended Ramah
camps to Seminar Shvilim: Outdoor Expedition, designed
in the spirit of our Ramah Outdoor Adventure camp in the
Rocky Mountains. This exciting program was launched last
summer.
Shvilim is a six-week educational experience built around
three masaot (challenge treks) in Israel. These treks are 4-5
days in length and are designed to give participants a taste
of the Israeli outdoors, in the footsteps of the Israel Trail
and beyond. Between treks, participants will take part in
the enriching Ramah Seminar programming as part of our
Seminar community. This program is unique within the
options of Conservative youth programming in Israel.

CLUB CORNER

As we’re nearing the end of the winter doldrums, with events
such as the Regional Financial Forum, World Wide Wrap, and
Ventriloquist/Comedian/Gastroenterologist behind us, it is
time to look forward to a very busy Men’s Club slate for March.
I wrote in my last article about the
pleasurable meals that I spent with
my family during November and
December. I sent a copy of the article
to my daughter who loved it. She
reminded me that there are two Jewish
holidays that are approaching where
the theme of sitting around a table
with the family is also important.
The next meeting of the Men’s Club will be held on Monday,
March 2 at 7PM. We will have dinner and then it’s on to our
annual mitzvah of Yom HaShoah candle packing.
Our inaugural Lower East Side tour will take place on Sunday,
March 8. A busload of us will depart TBS at 9AM to visit the
Streit’s factory, in its last Pesach season in its current location,
for a behind-the-scenes tour, courtesy of TBS member, Aron
Yagoda. We then walk to Economy Candy, where we browse
the wide selection of confections, harkening us back to the
days of our youth. We then amble about 7-8 blocks to the
Museum at Eldridge Street, where we tour this magnificent
synagogue, followed by a one-hour walking tour of the Lower
East Side. Then, we will be on our own for approximately an
hour to indulge in lunch, whether your preferences include
Russ & Daughters for some of the best smoked fish in NYC,
Yonah Schimmel’s Knishery, Katz’s Delicatessan, or perhaps
The Pickle Guys. We return to TBS at 4PM. Cost=$54/person,
but capacity for this tour is only 45, so please sign up early!
Our annual Passover wine tasting will be held on Thursday
evening, March 12. This is an opportunity to sample fine
Pesach wines and then place orders to enhance the Seders. I
recall purchasing some passionfruit wine last year. How sweet
and tasty! Please contact Jay Merker with questions.
The next Defensive Driving course will take place on Thursday,
March 19 at 6:30. $60/person for Men’s Club members and
their families, $70/person for everyone else. A few hours to
shave big bucks off of your insurance premiums over the next
three years, and/or to reduce points. This may be the best deal
in town! Please contact Alan Goldstein with questions.
Men’s Club Shabbat will be March 21. This year, we join many
congregations across America who will share this date with us.
Always a meaningful Shabbat morning during which we pray
and celebrate with so many.
The regional Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs will be holding
its 32nd Annual Awards Dinner on March 29 at 5PM at Crest
Hollow Country Club. This year, our TBS honorees are our
Youths-of-the-Year, Hannah Friedman and Sabrina Soffer, and
our Man-of-the-Year (and immediate Past President of Men’s
Club), Maurice Klein. Please show your support by attending
this gala dinner, with music and dancing for your enjoyment; if
you cannot attend, you can alsxo take out an ad in the journal.

These are the “P” holidays which are the subject of this
bulletin. Starting with the second one first, everyone knows
about the “P”assover seder. This is the oldest community
ritual in the Torah. We are instructed to eat this meal with
our family and if the family is too small-to share it with
another family.. Mishpacha our Torah Fund theme!
The other “P” holiday is “P”urim. It is a custom for people
to have a “P”urim se’udah, a festive meal to celebrate this
joyous day. We read the megillah and obliterate the name
of the wicked H----N. Children (and many adults) come in
costume to enhance the joy.
But it is not only in the synagogue that we should find
happiness; we add to it with the festive meal. The most
unusual one we ever went to was some thirty odd years
ago when my cousin became the father of a baby boy. His
father-in-law was the Rabbi of a large congregation and the
brit milah was at 4PM followed by a Purim Seudah for the
whole congregation. What a way to celebrate the end or
“P”urim.
So I hope that all of you will mind your “P”s and Qs
this year and join together with your mishpacha. From
hamentaschens to macaroons there is good eating in March
and April.
A Hag Purim and a zeissen Pesach to all!

COMMUNITY LUNCHEON
On December 17th we held a senior luncheon and had
Cantor Ofer Barnoy as our special guest. Our audience
loved his program. The next senior luncheon will be held
on March 11th and the special guest that day will be Gerri
Blum.
Other dates to reserve include our annual scotch tasting on
April 30 and End-of-Year BBQ/Texas Hold’Em Tournament
on June 11.
