PASTOR’S MESSAGE
I so enjoy reading
or looking over our
monthly Footprints
newsletter provided
by Bobbie Taylor,
as well as the
weekly e-reminders
our secretary Kathy
Vail sends out.
Both remind me
what an alive, vibrant and growing
congregation we are; one I would
certainly want to join if I were looking for a spiritual home.
For those looking to hitch their star
with our constellation of souls, we
will offer a Covenant Ceremony
during worship, Sunday, March 22.
Declaring oneself to be a disciple or
follower of the spiritual path of Jesus Christ, and joining the church as
a member, is a lot like getting married; both are serious but joyful
commitments that enhance lives.
We continue to offer Inquirers
Classes March 1, 8 & 15 to prepare those ready to join us.
We humans need to be part of
something bigger than ourselves,
and what is bigger than doing divine
work in the world! So much angst,
depression and worry can be alleviated by shifting one’s focus from our
own challenges to common causes.
The church is a broker house, a
meeting place for fellow pilgrims to
deepen their spiritual life and discover where God-given gifts and
passions intersect with the needs
and opportunities of the world.
How exciting.
I am extremely thankful for the good
number of visitors and new members we welcome each year. We
live in an age when many folks
question the relevance of church,
and in many instances with good
reason. One has to go to school or
work, pay taxes, and take care of
family. Why should anyone invest
precious time and limited resources
in church? It’s a good question. Our
answer to that question is found in
part in the pages of this newsletter.
How many other places can you experience a multi-generational, diverse, open and affirming, caring,
progressive thinking and acting,
spiritually relevant, socially compelling, fun-filled religious community?
What we offer is so unique and
needed. What would our lives and
community be without this place?
Thanks for your support and participation.
Peace to all,
~Pastor Mike

Sunday March 22
7:00 – 8:00 PM
in the church sanctuary.
Please join us for this sacred evening of music,
meditation, chanting and candlelight in
the peacefulness of the sanctuary.
At this awakening time of year we
celebrate the magnificence and
splendor of the Creator in all things.
Let us begin this season in communion with the
Eternal, and call forth the indwelling
Christ Spirit in each of us.
Rev. Susan Chamberlain & Pastor Kel Henderson
Saturday night was a blast!
Good wine, food and music
make a great recipe for a
gathering of fun, laughter
and dancing. Such a party is not fun and prosperous
if it does not have a huge crew of volunteers and donors.
Many people contributed
generously of their time,
money and donations.
Thank you all for your
generous support of this
ministry; Jerry Wolf,
Tricia & Mike Holland,
Melody & Colleen Taylor, Arlene Post, Nancy Brink
& Maria Pérez, Russ Noe & Kergan Edwards-Stout,
Kathy Dunlap, CJ & Denise McLean, Susan & Bill
Richardson, Robbie Arevalos, Krista Owens, Richard Punzalan & David Rogers, Rosita & Carmen
Mercado, Patrick Nailon, Mary Carden, Mae and &
Dennis Parrett and all who donated items for the
auction. Equally important are those who purchased
tickets and came to the party.
Without your generosity this event would have
not being a success. Thank you!
Open & Affirming Ministry is delighted to announce
that after paying expenses, it
raised $1,690 for our ministry in the Annual Wine Tasting event of February 21. A
portion of this money will go
to the general fund of Church of the Foothills and
other LGBTQI causes. Save the date, February 27,
2016 for our next Wine Tasting Party!

MARCH MIXED MEDIA
EVENT
Saturday, March 14
The next Mixed Media will feature a St. Patrick theme. So, of
course we will be having corned beef, cabbage and all the fixings—
and everyone should wear green. It will begin at 5:30 PM at the
home of Jerry and Kathy Dunlap with a pot luck supper. Corned
beef, coffee and water will be provided, but if someone would prefer another beverage, they can BYO.
Since everyone had such a good time at our February event, we
will be playing charades after supper again, but with a theme
(which will have something to do with St. Patrick). We will also
sing a few St. Patrick’s songs and share some “Blarney”.
Please see Kathy to sign up.

Pastor Kel’s Message: (con’t from page 6)
Then he became a stone, more powerful than anything else on earth. But as he stood there, he heard a
sound of a hammer pounding a chisel into the solid rock,
and felt himself being changed. “What could be more
powerful that I, the stone?” he thought. He looked down
and saw far below him the figure of a stonecutter.
Are you the stone, happy with who you are, though
open to continual remodeling. Or are you the stonecutter,
unhappy with life, constantly seeking greater power and
glory often at the expense of self and others? These are
questions you are invited to ponder as we enter into the
season of Lent.
Blessings,
Pastor Kel

Editor’s note: I just came across the following bit of
timeless humor, forwarded to me a few months ago,
along with this handwritten note:
“I found this in a Nov 1997 “Footprints” . As an
English major and teacher, I found it amusing and
maybe worth filling a space in a current edition.”
“Read it out loud!”

TELLING SOME STORIES
Delivering a speech at a banquet on the night of his
arrival in a large city, a visiting minister told several anecdotes he expected to repeat at meetings the next day. Because he wanted to use the jokes again, he requested the
reporters to omit them from any accounts they might turn
in to their newspapers. A cub reporter, in commenting on
the speech, ended his piece with the following: "The minister told a number of stories that cannot be published."
A PROFESSIONAL ARGUMENT
Three professionals are arguing about which is the oldest and
most respectable profession. The surgeon says "When God
made Eve out of Adam's rib, that was the first surgery, so mine
is the oldest profession!" The accountant says "When God created order out of chaos that was done with mathematics, so
mine is the oldest profession!" But then the politician said "Ah,
but who do you think created the chaos?"
PROGRESSIVE EPIPHANY
I know a friend who goes to a church that is so progressive that
when they do the Christmas story, the three Wise Men are
bringing gift certificates.
THE GIFT
When a 3-year-old opened a birthday gift from his grandmother, he discovered a water pistol. He squealed with
delight and headed for the nearest sink. His Mother was
not so pleased. She turned to Grandma & said, "I'm surprised at you. Don't you remember how we used to drive
you crazy with water guns?"
Grandma smiled sweetly & replied, "I remember."

LET’S CELEBRATE READING!!!
“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, ro pick up a
book and read to child.” Dr. Seuss epitomizes a love of children and learning. His use of rhyme is an important reading
skill: phonemic awareness….the foundation of reading.
When we celebrate Dr. Seuss and reading, we send a clear
message to our children that reading is fun and important.
National Read Across America Day , as well as Dr.
Seuss’s birthday is March 2nd. To celebrate, on 3/2 we are
visiting the beautiful library in Old Town Orange at 10 am.
If you can chaperone, please sign up. We rely on parents to
help drive for field trips!
We are also going to have a Pajama Reading on Wed,
3/11 at 5:30pm. Please mark your calendar and join us for
our first FPS book fair, stories and complementary pizza.
The scholastic book fair will run the entire week of 3/9-3/13!

Of the hundreds of texts produced by early Christians, few
made it into the New Testament. Why? What happened to texts
that were left out? How did the New Testament come to be?
What impact has the closed canon had on the Christian tradition? What would happen if we opened the canon and took an
active role in determining the future of Christianity? By reclaiming our right to debate what counts as scripture, we can
make congregations places for active intellectual discussion
and fruitful debate.
