Still, God does come and does clear our temples in unsuspecting ways. Children grow up; friendships melt into memories. What is God asking us to clear away today? Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. UPCOMING EVENTS Reflecting on God’s Word All of us wish we could be holy, we say, if only Jesus would come and do to the temple of our faith what he did to the temple of Israel’s faith: cast out what doesn’t belong, because we don’t seem to be able to do it for ourselves, at least not with much effectiveness. We try to pray and find ourselves daydreaming about what to make for supper, about the latest family argument, about the meeting we’re going to attend, about where we’re going to spend our money. We try to simplify, but we also like our lives the way they are. We like the cut of style, the thick of our lawn, the escape of vacation, the high from shopping or chocolate or daytime soaps or whatever catches our fancy. We wish we would love better, care better, have more compassion or patience, be more generous, but original sin always gets in the way—only we don’t call it original sin. We say we don’t have willpower or the energy. So what are we to do? John’s Gospel promises that God will come and drive such stuff from our lives. In fact, the promise is that God will do it whether we wish God to or not, which is probably a good move on God’s part simply because most of us are a bit fearful of what God may clear away. —Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. In Pope Francis’ 2015 ‘Message for Lent’ he shares how we must focus on fighting indifference within all areas of the church and within ourselves. He emphasizes the need for us, as Catholics and people of good will, to reach out to those in the outer limits and not to preoccupy oneself with one’s affairs and self-interests. The Holy Father said that we become more like Christ by hearing the Word of God, receiving the sacraments, letting ourselves be touched by the love of our Father, and by uniting in prayer. We can transform a world filled with indifference by using Lent as an opportunity to form our hearts. The Holy Father asks us to reassess the nature of this activity this Lenten season. Furthermore, we should not allow fasting to become superficial. He frequently quotes the early Christian mystic John Chrysostom who said: “No act of virtue can be great if it is not followed by advantage for others. So, no matter how much time you spend fasting, no matter how much you sleep on a hard floor and eat ashes and sigh continually, if you do no good to others, you do nothing great.” This is not to downscale the importance of sacrifice during the Lenten season, but rather placing value on what is given up during a time of penance and self-denial. Pope Francis reminds us that our actions and activities are done with purpose enriching the lives of others. ‘I distrust a charity that costs nothing and does nor hurt.’ CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAS SPRING STYLE SHOW March 21, 2015 11:00 a.m. - Gym PARISH RECONCILIATION SERVICE March 24, 2015 7:00 p.m.—Church WOMEN’S ACTS RETREAT March 26-29th March 26, 2015 Kick-off—Parish Hall Return reception on March 29th after 11:00 a.m. Mass in the Parish Hall RCIA MINI-RETREAT March 28, 2015 10:00 A.M.—Mark/Luke Room April 24, 2015 St. Peter School Closed Church Office closes at 12 Noon for Battle of Flowers Parade UPCOMING SECOND COLLECTIONS March 15, 2015 Catholic Relief Services March 29th, 2015 St. Peter Prince of Apostle School April 5th,2015 Rice Bowl April 12, 2015 The Society of St. Vincent de Paul April 19, 2015 St. Peter Prince of Apostles School Archdiocese of San Antonio Office for Parish Stewardship April 26, 2015 Assumption Seminary RCIA News—Praying for the Elect Now is an exciting time for both catechumens and candidates. Advocacy Day March 24, 2015 Participating in advocacy is an urgent task for the Catholic faithful in our archdiocese. Perhaps, now more than ever, we must unite as Missionary Disciples and bring our message to the public square, and especially to our state legislators. By our very baptism, we have been called to hunger and thirst for justice and to be peacemakers in our communities. These actions affirm the dignity of each person as made in God’s image with rights to be respected and responsibilities to fulfill. Archbishop Gustavo wants to encourage you to participate in Advocacy Day on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 to bring awareness, prayer and advocacy for laws and policies that defend our religious liberty, which pursues true social justice founded upon respect for life and the common good. If you are interested in participating in Catholic Advocacy Day or have any questions please contact the Office for Life, Justice and Peace at 210-734-1655. Have you ever thought about joining a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group? Mops is a nationally recognized organization that brings moms together that have children between the ages of newborn through kindergarten. Meetings will most likely be held on the first and third Fridays of the month between 9:00-11:00 a.m. in the St. Peter Annex Building. Dues will be $75.00 per semester (fall and spring). During a Mops meeting, moms can gather to learn new things by listening to a guest speaker, create a new “pinteresty” craft, participate in a service project, or just visit with other moms. Childcare will be provided during the meeting by having our little ones attend “Moppets.” Older, wiser, experienced moms are invited to join Mops as a “Mentor Mom.” We are looking to start a new Mops group at St. Peters for the spring semester. If you are interested in joining a Mops group, please contact Katherine Trimble at 713-822-7220.
