Migration, Human Rights and Drugs / Massive Return of Migrants / Devastating Floods
The leader of the Democratic minority in
the US Congress, Nancy Pelosi, accompanied by a delegation, visited President
Danilo Medina, Foreign Minister Andrés
Navarro (photo) and the chairman of the
Chamber of Deputies, Abel Martínez, to talk
about topics that are of mutual interest.
Along with nine other Democratic Congressmen the issues of the discussions were
migration, human rights, the fight against
drug trafficking and pregnancy of minors.
The delegation has visited Cuba before and
then went to Haiti.
Foreign Minister Navarro gave details on
the naturalization plan for the thousands
Dominicans of Haitian descent who are
primarily affected, and assured the Dominican Republic has put on the way one of
the most comprehensive immigration reforms in the Caribbean.
Martínez demanded from the US to rethink
on Haiti. People feel that there is a lot of
pressure on the country, but “the Haitian
problem is not exclusive for the Dominicans.” An unstable Haiti causes an imbalance here, in one of the most stable
countries in the region.
The international community must invest in
Haiti, build a basis for development and
democracy. The Dominican Republic has
helped in the best possible way, but the fate
of Haiti does not lie solely in the
responsibility of the Dominican Republic.
“We want the development of Haiti. We
have provided everything in our power for
it, but the Dominican Republic has to be
part of the joint efforts that are being made
worldwide to save Haiti.” The problems of
Haiti must be resolved on Haitian territory.
Since the beginning of last year, 7,593
Dominicans voluntarily returned from
abroad. The bad economic situation in
Spain or the persecution by the authorities
in other countries in the case of illegal
immigrants have encouraged them to
return. The US had deprived entire families
of their residency for various reasons.
Due to the heavy rains in the north and
center of the republic, 20,860 people had
to be evicted from their homes and found
shelter in temporary accommodations. A
total of 20 homes were destroyed by the
impact of the heavy rains, about 4,200
homes were damaged by flooding or
landslides. Two people lost their lives.
The Highway of national shame, the so
called Carretera “Turística” - its name can
only be regarded as a mockery since years -,
between Santiago and La Gran Parada close
to Montellano has been damaged even
more by landslides now. For years the users
of this road complain about its unspeakable
condition, many businesses along this “highway” therefore were forced to close.

“Proud and satisfied”
Leonel Fernández responds to Accusations / Campaign authorized by the United States?
Once it became clear that the letter to the
former president Leonel Fernández was
genuine, in which the convicted drug lord
Quirino Ernesto Paulino Castillo demanded
to repay a loan of 200 million pesos for his
2004 election campaign, Leonel Fernández
responded: “It fills me with great pride and
satisfaction that the transnational drug traffic
uses the identity of a known sentenced drug
trafficker to launch a smear campaign
against me.” These attacks demonstrated
the determination of his government against
these sectors of the transnational crime,
whose members have been extradited to
the United States according to the law. He
had fulfilled his duty by the extradition of
Quirino, and thus protected the Dominican
society and guaranteed the safety of our
families and the preservation of the Fatherland. It was strange that this campaign
started a few days after polls showed that he
would win against any other opposition
candidate in the elections in 2016, although
he has not even yet decided to run. In
conclusion, he quoted Luke 9:60: “Let the
dead bury their dead.”
In contrast to his followers, Fernández does
not make the opposition or the United
States responsible for Quirino's accusations,
but the international drug mafia. But he did
not deny the accusations nor the alleged
help of Quirino for campaigning or the
support for his foundation Funglode (Global
Foundation Democracy and Development).
Even the hasty dismantling of the generator
with a value of 200,000 dollars in the
building of the former president's foundation
Funglode after the drug lord claimed that it
was financed by him, was not denied by
neither Leonel Fernández nor the officials of
Funglode.
According to Euclides Gutiérrez Félix (pic), a
founding member of the ruling PLD party, it
is only possible for Quirino to raise these
accusations against Leonel Fernández, because he is authorized by the United States,
which so supported the plan for the “fusion”
of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The
US did not want the PLD governing.
The lawyer Carlos Balcácer who defended
Quirino, stated in an interview in the
program “El Sol de la Mañana” that after his
extradition to the United States in 2005, he
warned Quirino to talk about Fernández
with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA),
otherwise he could “perish”.

The prosecution accuses the senator of San
Juan de la Maguana, Félix Bautista, a close
confidant of former President Leonel
Fernández, of the accumulation of “exorbitant riches”. He is accused of corruption, money laundering, forgery and other
crimes. The hope of the senator that his
case simply will be filed definitively, as
usual, like those of former President
Fernández and the third in the round, Víctor
Díaz Rúa, so far was not fulfilled.
After the last official hearing, when Bautista
in an outburst called the Attorney General
“irresponsible”, the prosecuter replied that it
was time to take responsibility. Bautista
accuses Domínguez Brito of “abuse of
power” and “defamation” of his person. A
trial (juicio al fondo) is not yet appointed.

Brito remained unexpectedly stubborn, and
Judge Alejandro Moscoso Segarra so far
rejected the proposals to close the files.
In the investigations, for example, it was
revealed that in a company of Bautista the
chairman is a former manager of a service
company in the United States, and its
shareholders are a driver and a maid.
The network of companies of Bautista has
moved 25 billion pesos. It has four asphalt
companies, of which one alone cost 33
million dollars, his radio and television
stations cost eight million US dollars.
Sometimes incredible things happen.

countries. Sometimes these things can be
funny, sometimes they are annoying. So

Catastrophe at Carnival in Haiti
17 Dead at Parade / New Hotel in Port-au-Prince / Jamaica decriminalizes “Ganja”
The singer of the
group Barikad Crew,
“Fantom” is one of
the victims of the
disaster that led to the
cancellation of the
popular Haitian “Kanaval” after a high
voltage cable hurt and killed some people
on their Carnival float. According to his
information, the accident happened, when
there were lifted only two of three power
cables above the street and the third was
torn down and fell on the car after the
Carnival float started to move again. Some
of the participants were electrocuted, but
most of the victims were trampled to death
when a panic started, 78 others were
injured in the accident. The government
declared the state of mourning and promised to help the affected families.
President Michel Martelly and Prime
Minister Evans Paul headed the state
funeral. Paul promised that his government
would build a “better Haiti” to make sure
that such disasters will no longer happen.
In the presence of former US President Bill
Clinton, the new hotel of the Marriott hotel
chain was inaugurated in Haiti's capital Portau-Prince. He called the opening of the
eleven-story hotel a milestone for Haiti.
More than a thousand workers found work
during the construction, now 200 employees will find permanent jobs, almost
exclusively Haitians, also in positions of
responsibility. 60 percent of the managers
will be women.
President Martelly stressed the importance
of this hotel, which is a part of the plans of
the country to return to the world map of
tourism.
After a debate over three decades in Jamaica, the possession of small amounts of
“ganja” (marijuana) is now permitted for
medical or religious purposes. With a
license for religion (Rastafarians) or for medicinal purposes, the herb can be consumed
without restrictions. Without this license, an
amount up to two ounces (56 grams) is no
longer a crime. Who gets caught, has to pay
a penalty. For the Minister of National Security, Peter Bunting, this change is
“significant, because it ends the decadeslong criminalization of thousands of Jamaicans, just because they had a little ganja.”

Durán in the State of Guayaquil in Ecuador
in a clinic, the 19-year-old Catherine Nicole
Cando (photo), made international headlines. The Miss of the canton Durán should
do one more liposuction before another

until the facts are clear, which lead to the
death of the two women.
The same clinic was closed already in the
year 2011 after a scandal when a 46-yearold woman from Puerto Plata has died after
a plastic surgery.

Enrique Iglesias were the two big winners of
the Premios Lo Nuestro 2015 at the American Airlines Arena in Miami. Background of

típica, became victim of a robbery at her
home in Santiago. After the robbers
attacked her, she could still shoot once on
them with her pistol, as she affirms. María
Díaz had bruises on both eyes, the chest
and her legs. The robbers managed to
escape with their loot of 187,000 pesos in
cash, six mobile phones and jewelry worth
about one million pesos.

Rican Raphy Leavitt said the pressure of the
audience had become too strong. Since
2000 he is writing new songs again, but
until recently he did not feel a great
motivation to make them public. That has
now changed.
With his group La Selecta and the three
former singers Sammy Marrero and Carlos
and Víctor Ramírez, the 66-year-old Raphy
Leavitt now started to record the songs for
the new album.
In 1972, Raphy Leavitt had to stay in
hospital for six months when he suffered a
car accident after a concert, in which the extrumpeter Luisito Masenet was killed. The
song “La cuna blanca” was dedicated to
Masenet and now is a Salsa classic and a
popular song played at funerals.
“We want to raise social awareness, to see
if we can all have a common social
consciousness one day. We will unite so
that we can push the development of our
music and culture,” said Raphy Leavitt.

Selecta will perform in the Hiram Bithorn
Stadium in Puerto Rico on the National Day
of Salsa.

Alejandro Wigberto Bueno López was born
in San José de las Matas on the 6 th of
September 1963. Already as a child he
showed his musicality, played the guitar at
the age of five and won the competition in
the Festival de la Voz in 1978, , organized
by the Merengue star Wilfrido Vargas,
whereupon the young man called the
attention of Gerardo Vera, with whom he
made his first recordings. Then Alex Bueno,
as he called himself as a singer, sang with
Fernando Villalona on his hit album “Feliz
Cumbé” and the same year he founded his
first orchestra Alex Bueno y Orquesta La
Liberación. Eight years later, he decided to
start his solo career, in which he showed
that with his voice he is able to compete in
all genres, Merengue, Salsa, Bachata or
romantic music. When he published his
album “Bachata a su tiempo” at the peak of
the Bachata in 1988, it reached the highest
positions of the Latin music charts in the
USA. But despite his many hits, Alex Bueno
never was coveted a Music Awards, neither
nationally nor internationally.
