MENTSCH MAKERS
We hope that you will have the opportunity to join with us for our 16th annual All-School Purim
Expo which had become known to “bring down the house” on Thursday, March 5th. Our little
“mentsches” had so much fun making hamantashen as they practiced rolling, folding and egg washing them for a beautiful shine. They smelled and tasted fabulous.
Our second semester of Enrichment Classes are well under way.. The children have been
enjoying weekly on Mondays – Rock & Roll with Sharon and Janice; A Taste of the 4’s with Sharon
for our 3’s and Creative Cooking for our 4’s with Janice on Wednesdays and on Fridays we offer
Reading Readiness for our 4’s with Janice as well as Fun with Phonics for our 3’s with Sharon. This
is our sixth year that we have offered Reading Readiness and it has exceeded all expectations. Our
goal is to build upon the children’s pre-school skills while encouraging additional skills for ease in
preparation for reading. To our excitement and pleasure, because we work so hard on pre-reading
skills, many of our children this year are already reading a number of sight words. We will continue
to work on ABC recognition, beginning and ending sounds, blends, rhymes and sight words in all of
our classes. The Mentsches are so proud of their accomplishments as are their teachers!!
In our classrooms, the fun never stops!! Our All by Myself 2’s have been very busy using a
flannel board for learning to count with “5 Little Snowmen Round & Fat” and Pajama Day; our 3’s
are spending a great deal of time with art exploration, books, counting, the days of the week and
date as well as name recognition; our 4’s are loving the alphabet project and have learned all the
letters through N at this time which includes art projects, cooking or snack beginning with the letter
of the day, reciting words with the letter and learning the sound of the letter. Show and Tell is a favorite to all; Student of the Week has begun and finally our PLUS classes have begun learning
about weather which includes learning about seasons, temperature, experiments and how to appropriately dress depending on the day. What fun!!
Registration for the 2015-2016 school year (our 28th) is now underway. We offer classes
from 6 months until 5 years of age. In addition, we are also registering for our Mentsch Makers and
Tiny Tots in the Summertime. These programs offer your children the opportunity to remain in their
familiar temple setting with many of the staff from pre-school and ensures a smooth transition from
one year to another. Most of our day is spent outdoors and your children will create many wonderful
projects. Our 3 & 4 year old children bring their lunch and stay until 1:00pm. Come and enjoy water
play with our brand new sprinkler fun!! And…don’t forget your bathing suits!

SISTERHOOD
Yom Huledet!
From Esther 3:7, we trace our holiday of Purim. We are all well versed in the story of despicable Haman who drew lots to set the date
for the Jews' destruction. We celebrate the narrow escape from genocide thanks to the bravery and cleverness of Queen Esther. This
year Purim commences the evening of March 4th. It is a mitzvah to read from the Scroll of Esther which we do year-after-year and from
one generation to the next.
We trace all of our holidays to Torah. Through the centuries, traditions and celebrations have evolved. But Torah never ch anges. It is
there for us for all seasons and throughout Eternity. And the Jewish people endure despite countless attempts throughout m illennia to
extinguish our light.
Birthdays endure even though our time is limited in this realm. As I pen this article, we have just celebrated the birthday of trees, our
holiday of Tu B’Shevat. The thought of trees with green leaves right now brightens my mood! (No, I don’t want to build a snowman
and the cold DOES bother me . . . I’m quite done with “Frozen” as in the movie title and the word itself.)
February and March are birthday months in our family. Our precious daughter became an adolescent in February, and her bat m itzvah
happens soon. We are pumped! My own birthday is in March, at the very end of winter with just a hint of spring in the air.
What do birthdays mean beyond numbers? I can tell you that birthdays are very well-feted in the Netherlands, even for adults. For the
sake of brevity, I won’t detail all the social norms of Dutch birthdays, but I must share the more “unique” customs (humorous to
foreigners). If your birthday is on a workday, you are expected to bring in cake for your entire department. If you aren’t working, you
are expected to have your neighbors and your family in for a round of coffee and cake. Put all the chairs in a circle at th e office or at
home. Everyone is expected to congratulate you and all your relatives on your birthday. Seriously, this is really done. And if you are
turning 50, beware of Abraham! I am serious, so please read on. Our biblical patriarch, Abraham, who reached the ripe old age of 175
is applied to Dutch men when they reach the age of 50. Women turning 50 are known as “Sarah” who was not quite as long lived
(127?). If you are at work, your desk and the elevator are likely to be plastered with posters and decorations announcing t hat “so-andso is Abraham/Sarah”. And then original tunes are sung to you that roast your over-the-hill status.
So what about the meaning of birthdays in our faith? I’m happy to say that in the Reform Movement we leave the interpretation and
celebration up to the individual. I’ll be celebrating mine quietly. Happy birthday to all those celebrating a birthday this month! I
congratulate you and your ilk.

Action Club, we were deep in Chocolate, Champagne and Cha Cha on Saturday, February 14th.

MEN’S ACTION CLUB

February started with the Superbowl and our 2 completed Box Charts! Congratulations to all the
winners. We joined with Sisterhood/WRJ on Saturday, February 14th Valentines Weekend for
Chocolate and Cha Cha. Dancing Deserts and Wine. A nice time was had by all.
We gathered at Ramblers Rest on Feb 24th for our paid members dinner. Was great seeing everyone there - a nice turnout and good time was had by all.
If you have a High School Senior boy who is graduating this Spring, stay tuned for details on the
next Scholarship application.
The Monroe Temple Men's Action Club Men's Heath Speaker Series. Coming this Spring we will be
having various experts come in to speak on a variety of Men's Health Issues. Stay tuned for more
details of whom will be speaking and the dates and times.
We hope to be having our long awaited book discussion with Kostya Kennedy and his book on Pete
Rose in the Spring, as well as our continued Wine and Spirits series.
MAC has joined the Social Media Wave. We have a Face Book Page. Please friend us/like us at
