We have had five weeks pass and yet I am still amazed at the quality learning and teaching that is happening in our classrooms. On assembly last week I spoke to our students about never giving up and about making sure that they come to school focussed with lots of enthusiasm and energy. I also stressed the importance that they are trying their very best every lesson, every day to ensure their own success in their own way. Your support in discussing this with your child would be greatly appreciated. Its members assist with the decision making of our school. Our Annual General Meeting followed by the P and C meeting was held last Thursday night. It was encouraging and inspiring to see so many parents attend the meeting and showing their support. At the AGM we were given the opportunity to thank Mrs Amanda Scarpato, our outgoing President, for her amazing work and the time and effort she has dedicated to ensure our school is a great one. Amanda is very passionate about Mansfield State High School and it was obvious that her priority was always the students of our school. Also, on behalf of our school community, I would like to thank Mrs Jo Hardie for the wonderful job she has done as the Secretary. Her time and effort given is also appreciated. Congratulations to the following parents and school community members on their important positions on our P & C for the 2015 school year: President Jodie Mark Vice President Doug Margetts Vice President Amanda Scarpato Secretary Michelle Riding FINALLY… Treasurer Jason Allen I hope you have a wonderful week with your families. Mrs Karen Tanks, Principal Many thanks Jodie, Doug, Amanda, Michelle and Jason for taking on these positions and for helping our school. Our P and C certainly plays an important role at our school, both financially and strategically, and we thank all members for everything they do and for their continued support. The next P&C meeting will be held on Thursday 26 March at 7pm in F Block – F4/5, next to the Hall. New members are always welcome. Student Absences It is extremely important that if your child is away or you know of a future extended absence that you inform the school. It is also important that where possible, parents arrange with their child before school if they have to leave early. I am aware that there are times when unforeseen circumstances arise and as a result you may have to collect your child up early. (Please see Pages M14, M15 of the Student Handbook.) Make every day count in 2015 Make 2015 the year when your child doesn’t miss a day of school. Research shows that students who have good patterns of attendance are more likely to achieve at school. If students aren’t at school or don’t stay the whole day, they are missing valuable lessons. School Road Safety Reminder Our school can be a very busy place at drop off and pick up times and it is important that students are reminded of some basic road safety rules. Here are some basic tips for parents to share with your child to ensure they have a safe trip to and from school each day: When crossing a road, always STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK and keep looking and listening while you cross Always cross the road at a marked pedestrian crossing or designated crossing zone and if none is available, choose a safe place to cross where you can see traffic in all directions Make sure your child gets in and out of the car on the footpath side, away from traffic If travelling by bus, always wait until the bus has stopped before getting off and wait for the bus to move away before finding a safe place to cross. As parents and carers, the best way you can teach your child road safety is to set a good example yourself. Queensland Transport has put together a Back-to-School road safety kit to help parents instil these vital safety skills in children. For more information, or to download a copy of the kit, visit Queensland Transport’s website at www.transport.qld.gov.au/backtoschool . Mrs Caitlin Anghel, Deputy Principal (Years 10 and 11) STEADFAST Banner by Stevie Hunter (Year 10) Last year, in the Student Development Program (SDP), the Year Nines had the opportunity to take part in a special project. In this project every student stitched a button onto a piece of teal fabric on which letters were marked out. The fabric pieces were passed around during SDP each Wednesday morning last year, until all Year Nine student had sewn on a button. The fabric pieces were recently sewn together to form a banner displaying the word STEADFAST, which is our school motto. Sewing on one single button may have seemed like quite a small contribution, but it 2 is amazing how far a multitude of small contributions can go, as we were to see when the banner was revealed. This banner embodies some of Mansfield’s core values. In the banner, we see every person playing his or her part, both in a tangible and in a symbolic sense. We see the result of what it looks like when people, or buttons, stand shoulder to shoulder, united, as a team: We are STEADFAST! Jasmine Cheruvankalayil and I had the privilege of presenting the banner to our school Principal, Mrs Tanks. Jasmine stated: ‘We look forward to seeing the banner hang proudly in our Hall.’ NOTE: Special thanks go to Home Economics Teacher Mrs Emily Cooper, who planned where the buttons were to go and who sewed the fabric pieces together. It is a work of art! Thank you also to all SDP Teachers and Coordinators who oversaw the project! This year the Year Nine students will make a MANSFIELD banner. Thank you Bunnings (Mt Gravatt) 3:10pm – 4:30pm. This program boasts low cost tutoring, whereas elsewhere you might pay upwards of $30 an hour. My name is Nelson and I am the SMAAT Coordinator. A great aspect of the SMAAT program is that past students tutor present students. Students who are now studying at university, from Engineering to Business, are available and eager to help present students. I am also one of those who previously graduated from Mansfield and am now studying a Bachelor in Science and Secondary Education. This is a program offered to every year level in every subject area. For more information and to register, please visit www.smaat.com.au or for any enquiries email [email protected] . SMAAT: Tutoring for present students by past students! Mr Nick Kalpakidis, Sports Coordinator Mr Craig Healey, HOD (HPE) Languages Jean-Baptiste de la Salle Exchange Group want to provide as many learning opportunities as possible. An exchange such as this is the ultimate experience. Bon voyage! Immersion Picnic The annual French Immersion picnic was held on Sunday 22 February for our new students and their families. This year we had the double pleasure of welcoming both the Year 7 and Year 8 families. Parents were able to meet other students and their parents from their child's class. This is important for forging relationships that support parents and students. The weather was kind to us and enabled this wonderful tradition to proceed. According to Madame Burfoot, the rain has never succeeded in cancelling our picnic in the 15 years she has been teaching at Mansfield. She has never missed a picnic - what an achievement! She attended last week despite not having a current Year 7 or Year 8 class. She hopes to teach them at some point in the future. We wish our new students a happy and rewarding immersion experience. The Queensland-Swiss/German Student Exchange Program The exchange group from our sister school in Rouen, Normandie arrived on Monday 16 February. They have attended school on a few days and have enjoyed many typical Australian activities during their stay. Their itinerary included: Southbank and city visits, a rainforest walk and bird feeding at O'Reilly's, a surf lesson at Noosa, and a farm stay at Cedar Glen. Additionally, on the weekends their host families planned exciting activities for them. At the time of publication, the group will be on their way home. We have been delighted to host yet another group from Jean-Baptiste de la Salle (JB) school. Their English teacher, Philippa Venner has been the key to making this exchange program such a success. Monsieur David Buard, a PE teacher at JB, has enjoyed his first time in Australia immensely. In 1997, former Principal, Murray Kay and former HOD of Languages, Sonja Kokot, accompanied the first group of students to France. They had an agreement with another school in the Rouen area that fell through; however, not wanting to disappoint the students, the trip went ahead. During their stay, Mr Kay visited several schools and finally made an arrangement with JB de le Salle to continue this biennial exchange. The first exchange took place in 1999 and has continued since then. The success of this exchange is also the result of both schools supporting the teachers and students and we thank the school community for this. As teachers we The Queensland-Swiss/German Student Exchange Program is currently in its 20th year of operation and is an exciting opportunity for Year 11 students studying French, Italian or German to make significant progress in their language proficiency and appreciation of life and culture in either Switzerland or Germany. Queensland students will host their Swiss exchange student in July and August this year and then stay in Switzerland for eight weeks in December - January. Applications close on 20 March, so please see Ms Fryer for further information and an application form. Assessment Planners – Year 7 and 8 Senior Schooling External Senior Exams Year 12 students wishing to apply to sit external senior examinations, particularly in the area of languages other than English, need to see Ms Wenzel in F13 to collect information packs. Students who sit for these exams usually have the results credited towards their OP. Students are eligible to sit a maximum of two examinations if they cannot study the subject/ s at school and must be able to demonstrate they are receiving an appropriate level of tuition in the examination subject. All examinations occur in October and November 2015. Registration and payment is due by Monday 27 April. Work Experience Mansfield High School will offer work experience in 2015 to Year 10, 11 and 12 students. Work experience familiarises students with working conditions and employer expectations. In addition, it offers students the opportunity to sample a specific type of work, and also promotes personal and social development. The conditions of work experience for Mansfield students are based on The Education (Work Experience) Act 1996. The Education Act stipulates students: • are 14 years and over; • receive no payment in money or kind; • work five days during normal working hours for the industry; Assessment Planners were handed out to all Year 7 and 8 students last week. All students received two copies. One copy is to be glued into their Student Handbooks for their reference and the other copy is for parents. Please place it in an area where you can easily access and check the due dates for your students. The Assessment Planners allow students to manage their assessment load. We encourage students to be well prepared and organised for their assessment, thereby giving them the best opportunity to achieve to their potential. The Assessment Planner is a calendar of when the assessment for each subject studied by your student is due. The due dates for each assessment item span a week long period – this allows for classes across different days to have their assessment due at a suitable time within the specified week. Teachers will confirm the actual due date with their class when preparing for the assessment. Assessment items for practical subjects such as Home Economics, Manual Arts and Health and Physical Education have “throughout semester” following the assessment task. Practical assessment for these subjects continues throughout the semester; thus the date marked on the Assessment Planner is the final date of assessment. The Calendar of Events also publishes assessment. This calendar was issued prior to the Assessment Planner. Small changes were made to due dates to better balance the student work load. These changes will not be reflected on the Calendar of Events. The Assessment Planner has the final dates. We encourage all parents to have a close look at the Assessment Planner with your students and to discuss it with them. SELN aims to develop young people as leaders and provides opportunities for them to participate in sustainability projects in their schools and local communities. Each of the committees will meet four times during the year and will involve students from schools all over Brisbane. Congratulations! Environmental Council Australian Koala Foundation By Hillary Te – Writer for the Environmental Council The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) is a non-profit, non-government organisation dedicated to the effective management of wild koalas and their habitat. In 2012, koalas were sadly listed as vulnerable to extinction. In the wild, koalas face a number of threats, the main threat being loss of habitat. Since white settlement of Australia, an estimate of 80% of the koala’s habitat has been destroyed. Clearing of the eucalypt forests has meant that koalas suffer from loss of habitat, increased disturbance by humans and injury and possibly death from traffic, dogs and cats. From the estimated national population of 100,000 koalas, approximately 4000 are killed by dogs and cars each year! Mansfield State High School has been sponsoring Guppy the koala through the Australian Wildlife Foundation. You can help save koalas in many ways. Visit https://www.savethekoala.com/ to learn more. It's very important that everyone takes responsibility for doing the right thing for the environment in their own area; every small act counts. Who was Nell Rauchle? Alexandra Radke delves into the legacy of one of Mansfield State High’s legends, Ms Nell Rauchle. The legacy of the late (and great) Ms Nell Rauchle, the founding of the Rauchle Service Club, has touched the lives of many Mansfield State High students since the passing of Nell Rauchle in 2003. However, her contribution to her community extended beyond her dream to create a service club at Mansfield High. She not only laid the foundations for our Rauchle Service Club, but she was also a founding member of the SCOPE club ( http://www.scope.org.au/index.html ) – a women’s service organisation which supports communities across Australia. Nell Rauchle’s bright and guiding nature is still fondly remembered by the women of the Wynnum SCOPE club. The Nell Rauchle Memorial Trophy of the Speech and Drama section of the Wynnum Manly Eisteddfod was named in her honour. Before she became a guidance officer, Nell Rauchle trained as a Home Economics teacher. This was evident at Christmas time at Mansfield High when her gifts of service became gifts of lovingly prepared goodies such as chutney – some of the latter still in a staff member’s refrigerator. However, both in her role as a guidance officer, as well as in her service to the greater community, she was known for her skills of unlocking the potential of all. We can see this every day at Mansfield High through the work of all volunteers who carry on Nell Rauchle’s belief of giving to their school and the wider community, which give so much to us. Interested students who wish to give to others are warmly invited to the next meeting of the Rauchle Service Club on Monday 9 March at 1.10pm in F4/5. Alternatively, or additionally, students might like to complete V@M (Volunteer @ Mansfield) activities. Thank you for giving! Chaplaincy Food for Thought: Encouragement by Chappy Glen Something from which all of us benefit is encouragement. When you are feeling tired or are anxious about a situation in your life, a few well thought out words from a friend or family member can give you that emotional lift that helps you to pick yourself up and keep going. However, it is very easy to get so involved in your own needs and wants that you don’t even notice when someone other than yourself is struggling. In a school community as large as 7 Mansfield High, there are many opportunities for you to get alongside someone who may not be having the best of days. If you notice that someone seems unhappy, don’t just walk away. Why not take a few minutes to talk to him/her, to offer your support. If the person needs more help than you can give, why not accompany them to talk to someone in a support role. Looking out for others is something that we should all be doing. Please play your part in making our school a truly caring environment.
