Course details This qualification reflects the role of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers who form part of a team providing clinical and primary health care services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients, families and community groups. They work with patients, clients and visitors to hospitals and health clinics and assist in arranging, coordinating and providing health care in community health clinics. TAFE Queensland South West offer three study streams for this qualification: Chronic Disease Administration and Human Resources Workplace Training Please refer to the 'Units' section or the Course Guide for information as to which units of competency are in each stream. The preferred pathway into the Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care with TAFE Queensland South West is following the completion of the Certificate III in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care. Students who attend each month may progress through the program at a faster rate. Please refer to the Timetable for details regarding class dates and times. It is recommended that students undertake a minimum of 15 hours per week of self-directed study outside of classroom delivery at Bundamba. Students not currently employed as a Primary Health Care Worker/Clinician in the Primary Health Care sector must enrol and complete a maximum of 500 hours of Vocational Placement (organised in conjunction with the teacher). Toowoomba Full time: 1.5 years - Blended delivery (Block Training) Students studying via this mode will complete their study externally, and will also participate in block training (ABSTUDY is available at Toowoomba and Nurunderi). Within the duration of the program, students must attend a minimum of six blocks of study at Toowoomba (and/or Nurunderi). Please refer to the Timetable for details regarding block dates and times. It is recommended that students undertake a minimum of 15 hours per week of self-directed study outside of block delivery at TAFE. Students not currently employed as a Primary Health Care Worker/Clinician in the Primary Health Care sector must enrol and complete a maximum of 500 hours of Vocational Placement (organised in conjunction with the teacher). Nurunderi (Cherbourg) Full time: 1.5 years - Blended delivery (Block Training) Students studying via this mode will complete their study externally, and will also participate in block training (ABSTUDY is available at Nurunderi and Toowoomba). Within the duration of the program, students must attend a minimum of six blocks of study at Nurunderi and/or Toowoomba. Please refer to the Timetable for details regarding block dates and times. Please note that students may need to attend some blocks of study at Toowoomba in order to complete six blocks within the 1.5 years. It is recommended that students undertake a minimum of 15 hours per week of self-directed study outside of the block delivery at TAFE. Students not currently employed as a Primary Health Care Worker/Clinician in the Primary Health Care sector must enrol and complete a maximum of 500 hours of Vocational Placement (organised in conjunction with the teacher). Recommended Entry Requirements To successfully complete this course within the specified timeframe, it is strongly recommended that students have completed the Certificate III in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, or are existing workers in the industry. By completing the Certificate III in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care prior to the Certificate IV, students will have the opportunity to build essential skills and knowledge that will increase their chances of successfully completing the Certificate IV. By completing the Certificate III first, students will also be reducing the number of units and Vocational Placement hours they will be required to complete in the 1.5 year Certificate IV duration. Enrolment Pattern The packaging rules for this qualification require the completion of twenty-one (21) units of competency, including fourteen (14) core units and seven (7) elective units. Students who are not currently employed as a Primary Health Care Worker/Clinician in the Primary Health Care sector also need to enrol in Vocational Placement. Direct entry for this course is available each term (provided the recommended entry requirements have been carefully considered). Students are to enrol in all fourteen (14) core units, plus all seven (7) units for the study stream of their choice (Chronic Disease, Administration and Human Resources, or Workplace Training), as well as Vocational Placement, if required.
