Surplus furniture

Tailem Bend’s new council offices have had an unexpected additional outcome for the
district, as community groups benefit from some left over furniture.
As well as providing a stunning flagship building Coorong District Council residents can be
proud of and which is developing into a great community space, the move to the new
purpose-built Civic Centre has seen some spare furniture become available for
repurposing.
Numerous community groups have already benefited from the donation of furniture,
including the Tailem Bend Community Centre, Coonalpyn Community HUB, Tintinara
Community Men’s Shed and Taberefta (Tailem Bend Aged Homes).
Taberefta are transforming one of their units into a recreational space for residents and
some of the council’s surplus furniture has been donated to this project.
Resident Basje Wellman said the furniture would be put to good use.

“We have been relying on donations to create the communal room. As a residents’
committee we don’t have very much money, but the support we have had from the council
and community has been fantastic,” Mrs Wellman said.
“Someone kindly donated a fridge and a microwave and the Community Centre have given
us some shelving – all we need now is an upright vacuum cleaner.”
Mrs Wellman said the recreation room would become a meeting place for residents from
the 22 units and provide them with important social interaction opportunities.
There will be a public open afternoon for the new space at Taberefta on Monday 16 March
at 2:00pm.
