4 “MARCH FOR BVL”
CAMPAIGN
INTRODUCED
BVL is introducing a new campaign to help raise
additional funds for America’s veterans. Although
it can be implemented any time of year, “March for
BVL” is especially appropriate for the third month on
the calendar. Just in time for many state and local
tournaments, the campaign can be as simple as “marching”
down the lanes to accept donations for BVL, or it could
be extended to coordinating a community-wide “march.”
Other ideas might include: Collecting donations in an
army-style boot; Organizing a walk-a-thon or march-athon with a salute to area veterans; Asking veterans in
the community to march into the bowling center to kick
off a tournament; Printing artwork onto label-backed
paper and applying it to a collection can or box; or
Recognizing $1, $5, $10 individual donations using “Pin
Art” printed on white, red, and blue paper writing the
donor’s name on the “pin” and posting it at the control
desk or on a bulletin board.
JUNE 15 DEADLINE
FOR BILLY WELU
SCHOLARSHIP
The Professional Bowlers Association is now accepting
applications for the 2015 Billy Welu Scholarship Award,
which recognizes exemplary qualities in male or female
college students who compete in the sport of bowling. The
winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship. To be eligible,
candidates must be amateur bowlers who are currently in
college (preceding the application date) and maintaining
at least a 2.5/4.0 GPA or equivalent. Applications must be
postmarked by June 15. The scholarship was established
to annually recognize a college student who combines
outstanding bowling talents with academic excellence.
Visit pba.com/Corporate/Scholarships/ for an application.
RELAUNCHED PWBA
TOUR SCHEDULE SET
The Professional Women’s Bowling Association Tour will
relaunch in 2015 featuring seven regular-season events,
three nationally televised majors, and stops from coast
to coast. The PWBA Tour schedule will kick off with the
USBC Queens from May 13-19 and conclude with the PWBA
Tour Championship from Sept. 10-13. PWBA regular-season
events have a Friday through Sunday format to allow PWBA
members to bowl tour stops and have flexibility for work
or family obligations during the week. Regular-season
events will have $60,000 in guaranteed prize money per
event with a $10,000 first-place prize.
MEMBERSHIP DEPT.
Aaron S. Medlock of Clinton, Md., has been suspended
from membership and office in USBC and must not bowl in
any USBC leagues or tournaments.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE • GENE O. MAYS
We can all make
our association better
When I was elected in February 2012, I stood proudly at the
NCAUSBCA Annual Meeting and
accepted the position of president
of this association. At that time,
I made a commitment to help the
association become the best that
it could be and even better than in
the past. I have tried to live up to
that awesome task that you elected
me to do.
We can all do our part to make
this association an even better one
by encouraging more family and
friends to join our various leagues.
I want to thank you for your positive response to this plea.
Now that this season is approaching an end for many leagues, all
league members are reminded
that it is the responsibility of your
league officers to carry out their
duties as required by the bowling
rules.
In closing, you are reminded that
if there is anyone you would like
to see considered for the Hall of
Fame, take the time to read the article on page 3, and don’t hesitate
to contact the association office for
any additional information.
Gene O. Mays may be reached via
eMail at [email protected].

MANAGER’S MEMO • RONALD McGREGOR
Current and future issues to consider
Here are some issues to consider:
1. I am hopeful that your league
has completed at least one audit of
the league finances—better to be
safe than sorry.
2.
This is the time of the season when weather can disrupt the
league schedule, so please err on
the side of safety and allow for postponements and makeup games. A
postponement committee avoids
the possibility of favoritism.
a. Bowlers are allowed to ask for
a postponement if they participate
in the USBC Championships, the
local or state championship tournaments, or an annual meeting.
The 52nd Annual Youth Championship Tournament will be held
two weekends through March 8 at
Bowl America Falls Church.
The 70th Annual Open Championship Tournament will begin
March 28 and end April 19. Events
will be held at Bowl America Fairfax and Bowl America Woodbridge, so come on out and let’s
make this a big time event; there
is something for bowlers of all ages
and abilities to participate in this
year. Entry blanks can be found on
our association Web site and Facebook pages and should be available
in your centers.
5.
3.
Have you considered where
you are going to bowl next season?
Has you league talked with center
management regarding the contract for next season?
4. Tournament season is in full
swing, starting with a very successful Mixed Scratch Doubles
event recently completed at Bowl
America Fairfax.

If your league has had a team
drop out for some good reason, do
you know how you are to handle
This is the time of the season when weather
can disrupt the league schedule,
so please err on the side of safety and allow
for postponements and makeup games.
b. Rule 111b states a league cannot adopt a rule that would prohibit any prebowling/postponements
when a team is unable to field a
legal lineup due to item 2a above.
THE QUESTION:
the loss of prize money? How much
money is owed to the bowler(s) who
paid into the prize fund for weeks
and had to withdraw?
We get a lot of calls on this very
subject every year, so be ready with
a plan. You will find Rule 117b/8
helpful.

In the position round last game of the
Youth Invitational finals, Jarrett DeFalco
(left) needed to defeat A Division leader
Donald Bock by 41 pins to become the
victor. Up 32 pins (179-147) in the seventh frame and with both bowlers striking in the eighth and ninth, DeFalco had
an opportunity to apply maximum pressure to his opponent, only to have his
title dreams all but die when his first ball
in the final frame failed to carry the 10pin. DeFalco spared and tossed a strike
to finish with 248. Meanwhile, Bock, now
needing only a mark, promptly rolled
two strikes and an 8-count for 235—
not enough to win the match but good
enough by 27 pins to secure his first Invitational championship. A deeply disappointed DeFalco departed Bowl America
Falls Church as divisional runner-up for
the second consecutive year.

Cause and cure for pulling the ball
Q. I have been pulling the ball
lately and can’t seem to stop doing
this. The harder I try not to pull,
the worse it gets. Any ideas?
A. There are several things that
can cause pulling the ball; the main
one, however, is muscling the swing.
My key in your question is the harder you try to stop, the worse it gets.
Sounds like muscling.
It goes like this: When you get
into a slump and begin to try too
hard, the tendency is to control the
swing. You start pulling the ball
back, which forces you to pull the
swing forward. Then, there is only
one thing you can do at release and
that is to pull the ball.
Yes, the harder you try to stop
this, the worse you get.
During your next practice session, push the ball out and just let
your arm fall; let the weight of the
ball take your arm back. You will
find that this will allow you to have
a much more free swing, and the
pulling will disappear.
Do this for a few games, and don’t
worry about your score. Just work
on regaining your relaxed armswing. Let your muscle memory
take over.
Q.
What is the difference between a symmetrical and asymmetrical bowling ball? I need a
new ball and don’t know which
would be best. I average 184.
A. A symmetrical ball generally
will have a smoother, more consistent reaction and is easier to control. The asymmetrical ball tends
to react to the dry area sharper
Q.
I have been watching the pros
on TV, and I hear they bowl 30 or
40 games a week. I bowl five or six
games, and my arm is tired and I
am beat. How do they do this week
after week?
A. Professional bowlers of today
1. On the Sport Average Adjustment Scale, what “Adjusted Average” equals a “Sport League Average” of 200?
2. Who is NCAUSBCA’s current fifth vice president?
3. Which center is older—Bowl America Shirley or Parkland Bowl?
4. True or False: USBC encourages all tournaments to offer guaranteed first-place prizes.
5. True or False: When a team forfeits a game, the team score
for that game is zero.
6. True or False: A team can request an extension if it does not
make up games within the time limit set by league rule.
7. What center hosted the final round of this year’s NCAUSBCA
Youth Invitational Scratch Singles Tournament?
are in great physical condition.
They are as much of an athlete as
the athletes in any sport. They all
maintain workout schedules, and
the biggest part of bowling is having strong legs.
To bowl well, you have to have
your legs under you; this creates
speed, power, and accuracy. If your
arm is getting tired and you are
worn out, you are relying on your
arm and back muscles for power.
Bowling is not an upper-body
sport; it starts with the legs.
So if you want to get better and
have more endurance, start exercising those legs.
ANSWERS: 1, 214; 2, Darron Mayes; 3, Bowl America Shirley; 4, False; 5, True;
6, True; 7, Bowl America Falls Church.

it can be used by a knowledgeable
ball driller to help a bowler with
weak spots in his/her game—like
getting the ball through the heads
or creating a stronger reaction at
the pins.
So it is just a matter of preference. But remember this: The surface of the ball is still the biggest
factor in ball reaction.
Both symmetrical and asymmetrical cores have a place in the
game, and both can be fine-tuned
by tweaking the cover. What you
try to do is match up to the shot at
your lanes.

The Best Bowling Tip I Ever Received
By Tim Lancaster
The best bowling tip I ever received came during a league session at Bowl America Shirley in 2011 or 2012. My teammate at the time, the late NCAUSBCA Hall of Famer Willie
Jelks, did not like the way my hand came over the top of my ball during my release.
Willie taught to relax my armswing, focus on my target, and follow through. He also
worked with me to stay behind the ball and actually roll—not throw—the ball. This gives
me the right axis tilt roll on the ball that is conducive to scoring strikes.
I now get that forward roll so that when my ball goes into the pocket, it retains its energy by my staying behind the ball with a good follow-through.
Willie’s assistance back then helped me become a better bowler.
Rolling in his first senior event, Tim averaged 234.33 for nine games to win the All Events category of his age
division in the NCAUSBCA 33rd Annual Senior Tournament at Bowl America Woodbridge. He also placed third in
Doubles with Luis Drakes.
