Term 1 IN-SERVICE COURSE FOR TEACHERS FROM THAILAND SERVICE TO AN ASEAN PARTNER: STU CONDUCTED A SPECIAL IN-SERVICE COURSE in Singapore for Teachers from Thailand (Monday 27- Friday 31 October 2014) A group of 300 junior and senior high school teachers from several provinces, accompanied by officials from education departments and the universities, spent five days taking part in a programme specially designed for the teachers. OBJECTIVES The programme was based on these three objectives: 1. To help participants keep abreast of the developments and changes in the content and methodology of the school subjects. 2. To expose participants to the way English is used to teach most subjects in the Singapore school curriculum, 3. To encourage participants to relate what they have learnt in the programme to the school situation in their own country, through small-group syndicate meetings among themselves. 5 6 the mentor IN-SERVICE COURSE FOR TEACHERS FROM THAILAND THE VISITORS THE PROGRAMME In sharing Singapore’s experiences, the speakers in the programme focused on the strengths of the Singapore school system. Thinking Schools, Learning Nation Teach Less, Learn More These two overriding principles have influenced the evolution of the Singapore school system in the last 15 years or so. Summary of the Programme The schedule covered sessions on The Deputy Commissioner of the Basic Education Commission speaking at a session. PEDAGOGY • Teaching Maths in Singapore • Next Generation Science Education: Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment and Emerging Technologies. A view of the audience of teacher-participants, with education officials from Thailand seated in the front row. TEACHER-STUDENT INTERACTION HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE • Classroom management to improve student learning • Use of computers in the Singapore classroom • Cooperative learning • Communication in English – stressing the proper use of English in speaking and writing. • Student counseling • Ways of making the assessment of student learning effective. THE FEEDBACK On the whole, the feedback was highly positive. The teacher-participants and officials felt that the time was well spent in the course which provided them with an insight into the strengths and the evolution of the Singapore school system. Teacher-participants meeting in small groups. Term 1 MEMBERS NEED TO KNOW Members need to know... How I was saved from ignominy by the Singapore Teachers’ Union At my time of greatest need the union was my guiding star and having had the union at my back is why I still have my teaching job today! I joined the Education Service in the early 80s and signed up as a Singapore Teachers’ Union (STU) member soon after as it seemed the most natural thing to do. As a teacher, I ought to be supporting the union that represents my interest. And for many years I enjoyed the various lifestyles that membership offers, like shopping and professional development privileges and benefits provided by the union. I had heard of the Industrial Relations (IR) work of the STU, but never really paid much attention to it as I did not have any workplace issues. Then a few years ago, my actions towards a few of my pupils were grossly misinterpreted and my blissful life as a respected and dedicated teacher came to an abrupt end! The world as I knew it, changed overnight! I was interdicted from duty on half-pay and had to face disciplinary proceedings. This meant that I had to submit to the Permanent Secretary of Education (PS) a written reply to the charges levied against me within two weeks. I was further warned not to be seen in or around the school and barred from leaving the state until my name was cleared of wrongdoing. Furthermore, I was denied salary increments and bonuses. Some colleagues whom I had known for decades started to view me with coloured lens. This was obvious when I bumped into them outside. However some good friends and colleagues were very supportive and gave me advice. They suggested that I turn to the union for help. I was very depressed and at my wits end on what to do. So I took their advice and turned to the STU for help. And I am glad I did! As a STU member, I had access to the IR team. The STU officers gave me a clear roadmap of what to expect, what lay ahead and helped me tidy up my exculpatory statement and getting an extension for its submission date. continued on page 8 7 8 the mentor MEMBERS NEED TO KNOW from page 7 This episode was the darkest period of my life, and it lasted more than a year! I was fortunate and blessed to have the support of my family and the STU officers who walked the uncharted path faithfully with me. Finally, after numerous written submissions and interventions from STU, my explanation was accepted and I was reinstated to service. The STU further aided me with securing a school transfer and I have since rebuilt my career at my present school and re-ignited my passion for teaching. Most importantly, I have rebuilt my life, thanks to STU. Nowadays when I meet nonmembers and beginning teachers, I will encourage them to join the STU as the STU membership can also be viewed as a form of “insurance” because you never know when you will need the STU to fish you out of the deep waters! I am glad that I had the STU by my side during the most difficult part of my career and life. And I also want to thank the STU staff and officials for their dedication and professionalism. Yours-in-teaching, Mr Grateful STU member since 1983 Teachers and the Law – a popular School Talk conducted by STU Teachers and the Law is a popular talk requested by schools to be conducted during their contact time. It is a useful and relevant talk, suitable for all teachers. IT COVERS ISSUES SUCH AS DOCTRINE OF IN LOCO PARENTIS, NEGLIGENCE (DUTY OF CARE, BREACH OF DUTY AND DAMAGE) AND SUPERVISING CHILDREN. LAST BUT NOT LEAST, THE TALK WILL END WITH SHARING OF EXPERIENCE AND Q&A. Some of the feedback from teachers who attended this talk: 1. Interesting & helps us to be clearer in our roles & responsibilities as teacher. 2. Good in getting our attention through authentic situations. 3. Relevant and informative. 4. Engaging & interactive. Well prepared. Good variety of examples, case studies. In short, teachers will gain greater awareness of the legal implications of their actions while carrying out their duties as a teacher. The talk is conducted free-of-charge for schools and clusters to create awareness and surely, it will provide useful tips for teachers.
