Lilian Schick school A leAder In Me School™ March 2015 Dear Parents/Guardians, As part of the new Learning Commons Policy passed in 2014, schools are evolving their libraries to become a Learning Commons. The goal is to align to the Ministerial Order on Student Learning, which calls for studentcentered learning, collaborative learning space. A learning commons is an inclusive, flexible, learnercentered, physical and/or virtual space for collaboration, inquiry, imagination and play to expand and deepen learning. Great things are happening in the learning commons at Lilian Schick School. We have completed the designs for a renovation of the space, and have begun to purchase some great new items for our students. With support from our RPA, and some generous sponsors in our community, we have purchased new furniture and portable technology to help revitalize this space. We are also planning to purchase new programming technology, science circuit boards, and adding to the books and resources we have. It is exciting to see the transformation take place, and see how it transforms the use of this space and learning that happens at the school. The goal is to have the space completed for April 1, 2015. For more information, please check out this link: http:// education.alberta.ca/department/ipr/slsi.aspx On January 29th, some of our students also had the opportunity to take part in a drumming demonstration at our school. Students in grade 5 and 6 took place in a one hour demo where they played Jembe drums with a group leader. Students focused on playing as a team, keeping rhythm, and following their group leader as they learned team-building and regulation strategies. It was an excellent experience, and may lead to a residency in the fall for all students in the school. Each of the students were part of a drum circle where they interacted with one another through their hand drum. They learned the difference between tone and bass on the drum, as well as demonstrated their uniqueness and respect for one another within the circle. This was part of an initiative that Ms. Brenneis has taken on with Sturgeon School Division in integrating brain regulation strategies within the classroom. For more information on what the initiative is based on you can visit http:// www.albertafamilywellness.org/ or contact Ms. Brenneis at the school. Pink Shirt Anti-Bullying Day On Wednesday, February 25th, our staff and students participated in National Pink Shirt Day to bring awareness to bullying. AB Farm Safety Presentation On Monday, February 23rd the elementary students took part in a presentation surrounding the significance of eliminating farm-related injuries and death in Alberta. The senior band students would like to thank everyone who purchased from our Steeped Tea Fundraiser. The fundraiser was a huge success. The band is currently preparing for their festival performance set for Tuesday, March 10th at 9:45am at the Dow Centennial Shell Theatre. We also have Camp Nakamun approaching on March 5th and 6th to prepare for Sturgeon Night of Music on May 7th at Sturgeon Composite High School. Grade 6 Hot Air Balloons! As part of our Flight unit, we make paper hot air balloons. When we (finally) had a day with little to no wind, we used a furnace pipe and a camping stove to fill the balloons and let them go! Be sure to ask our new hot air balloon experts how they rise and fall! 5B Service Project 5B has a Service Project! They want to raise enough money to buy the school a Popcorn machine! They are well on their way. During the week of Valentine’s Day, they raised $91.00 by selling guesses for a Hershey Kiss Candy Jar. There were 138 Hershey Kisses in the jar. Ceejay Hamilton from 8R was the winner with her guess of 137. Way to go, Ceejay! WISEST We were fortunate to send four of our grade 6 girls to the University of Alberta for a day of science activities courtesy of WISEST (Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science & Technology). Jaelyn Hemeon, Sadie Sullivan, Abby Jigolyk-Carnell, and Cianna Goddard enjoyed a morning chemistry demonstration, a lab activity with banana DNA (and we got to see some glowing bacteria), and an afternoon filled with building bridges and designing/ testing an "arm" based on the Canadarm. We were also able to speak with volunteers about their fields of study and learn about different areas of science. A great learning opportunity and a very busy day! Our teams have been spending countless lunch hours over the last few months training and the hard work paid off! Both our girls teams qualified for next month's finals. Our boys teams ran a great race, however, missed qualifying for finals this year. These amazing results would not have been possible without the help of our outstanding alternates and Jr. High leaders. On an exciting note, our very own Lauren Moerman and Mr. Clarke Ball were interviewed with Global News. Check out our Facebook page to see this interview. Lilian Schick School RPA has extended the Boston Pizza Receipts fundraiser for the remainder of the school year. Boston Pizza will give our school 5% of the subtotal on all receipts collected. Please bring in any receipts you may have, there is a drop box in the office. Thank you for your support! Way to go Knights! Winter Walk Day On Wednesday February 4th, the students and staff at Lilian Schick School participated in SHAPE Alberta's Provincial Winter Walk Day. SHAPE (Safe Healthy Active People Everywhere) is an Alberta wide non-profit organization that promotes the Active & Safe Routes to School programs throughout Alberta. We encourage students to walk or bike to school on a regular basis! SHAPE promotes active transportation of students which in turn promotes student health, benefits the environment and reduces traffic congestion in and around schools. In total, the staff and students of Lilian Schick School walked 8019 minutes (33 minutes/person) and enjoyed the warm temperatures and sunshine. Students also enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate afterwards in the gym. Thanks to Miss. Fertig, Mrs. St. Onge and Mrs. Ouellette for their help in organizing the event! It was a great time for everyone.
