The monarch said the terrorists’ acts ran counter to basic Islamic values such as mercy, peace and tolerance. “These terrorists have made the world’s Muslims their greatest target,” he said. “We will not allow them to hijack our faith.” The King of Jordan also stressed a dialogue of respect as a way to create an inclusive society: “Attacking and excluding others, insulting other peoples and their faith and convictions this is no way forward. The future lies in unity and respect, not division and stereotypes.” In addition King Abdullah II called for the Palestinian conflict to be resolved by political means and also drew attention to the fate of Syrian refugees of which 1.4 million have been given shelter in his country. “This is more than the equivalent of France hosting the entire population of Belgium,” he said. “My small country is now the world’s third-largest refugee host and I thank all of you who are helping us to uphold this global responsibility.” Find out more • • • • • EN Full text of King Abdullah II's speech at the European Parliament: http://www.engpublic.europarl.europa.eu/resources/library/media/20150311RES33409/20150311RES334 09.pdf Video of the speech: http://www.europarl.europa.eu/ep-live/en/plenary/video?debate=1425985376131 Photo gallery of the visit: https://www.flickr.com/photos/european_parliament/sets/72157650859786469/ Article on previous visit to the Parliament: http://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/newsroom/content/20131205STO29903/html/King-of-Jordan-discusses-Syrian-refugees-during-visit-toParliament Syria top story: http://www.petra.gov.jo/Public_News/Nws_NewsDetails.aspx?Site_Id=1&lang=2&NewsID=186168&CatID =13&Type=Home>ype=1 Press Service Directorate for the Media Director - Spokesperson : Jaume DUCH GUILLOT Reference No:20150309STO32480 Press switchboard number (32-2) 28 33000 1/1
