TODAY IS MOTHER’S DAY Mothering Sunday was originally a time when people returned to the church, in which they were baptised or where they attended services when they were children. This meant that families were reunited as adults returned to the towns and villages where they grew up. In time, it became customary for young people who were working as servants in large houses, to be given a holiday on Mothering Sunday. They could use this day to visit their own mother and often took a gift of food or hand-me-down clothing from their employers to her. In turn, this moved towards the modern holiday, on which people still visit and take gifts to their mothers. A PRAYER FOR MOTHER’S DAY All-loving God, we give you thanks and praise for mothers young and old. We pray for young mothers, who give life and count toes and tend to our every need; May they be blessed with patience and tenderness to care for their families and themselves with great joy. We pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us; May they continue to guide us in strong and gentle ways. We remember mothers who are separated from their children because of war, poverty, or conflict; May they feel the loving embrace of our God who wipes every tear away. We pray for women who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly care and compassion. We remember mothers. grandmothers, and great-grandmothers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. Amen. Introduction We have gathered here as God’s holy people, and we are God’s work of art created in Jesus Christ to live the good life as from the beginning he intended us to live it. So we have to be both thankful for his mercy. And sorry for our failures to live life in that way. Since this is the Fourth Sunday of Lent, today is Mother’s Day – the day when we thank our mothers for all they have done for us, and also express our sorrow for any way we may have hurt them. HEADING FOR READINGS First Reading (2 Chr 36:14-16.19-23). This is the story of the people of God being scattered from Jerusalem and exiled for their infidelity, but even after God still renewed his covenant and moved the heart of a pagan king to rebuild their temple and let them return. No matter how far we feel exiled from God, he is seeking us out. Second Reading. (Eph 2:4-10). Who are we as the Christian community? This reading’s answer is: we are God’s work of art created in Jesus Christ to live the good life as from the beginning he intended us to live it. Gospel (Jn 3:14-21). The human mind think of God as primarily in terms of almighty power and so fears God as ‘punishment’ and vengeance’. We Christians must take our image of God from Jesus – what we say about God is what we see in Jesus – and Jesus says: ‘God sent his Son into the wo5rld not to condemn the world, but so that the world could be saved through him.’ Responsorial Psalm O let my tongue cleave to my mouth if I remember you not. Gospel Acclamation Glory and praise to you, O Christ! God loved the world so much he gave his only Son; everyone who believes in him has eternal life. Glory and praise to you, O Christ!
