International Summer School Research Outline
Background:
The “International Summer School on Migration” in Kvareli will be organised in the framework of
the EU-funded ENIGMMA project,1 implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy
Development (ICMPD) in cooperation with the State Commission on Migration Issues of
Georgia (SCMI), EU MS and Georgian academia experts, the Migration Observatory of the
University of Oxford and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights (BIM). The Summer
School will be mentored by the ENIGMMA academia experts from the EU and Georgia. In total,
30 students of media, law, economy and demography from Georgia and representatives of
Georgian diaspora will take part in the Summer School.
The Summer School will be organised from 28 June to 4 July, 2015.

disseminated together with this document.
Requirements for the Research Paper:
Persons applying to participate in the Summer School have to choose one topic for their
research project. The research papers should focus on long-term prospects of development of
the Migration Strategy in Georgia and related areas. (Please see below Examples of the
possible research topics).
Research can be undertaken individually or in a team with other selected participant(s); a
maximum of three selected participants can be involved in one research activity. Research
teams can be composed of representatives from the same or different institutions/ disciplines.
Teamwork and inter-disciplinary approach is encouraged. ENIGMMA project team may also
decide on joint development of the research paper.
Research project must be supervised by the respective academia representative from Georgia
appointed by the ENIGMMA project. These academia representatives will also take part in the
Summer School.
The research paper has to be drafted and submitted in English language. The ENIGMMA
project will take care of subsequent language edition for the potential publication, if needed.
The length of the research paper shall not exceed 15 pages2, if the research is implemented
individually, and 20 pages in case of team research.
Students have to finalise their draft research paper until 15 June 2015, and submit it to the
appointed supervisors. The final approval of the research paper and decision on their
publication will be taken during the Summer School.
Indicative research area:
The Migration Strategy of Georgia was adopted in 2013 and shapes the country migration policy
for 2013-2015. Therefore, the Government of Georgia faces the need to elaborate the policy
document in the area. The purpose of the research is to formulate policy recommendations

which could support Georgia’s development of the national Migration Strategy and Action Plan
for 2016-2020. The current Migration Strategy of Georgia can be found at the State Commission
on Migration Issues website (http://migration.commission.ge).
The candidates are expected to identify economy, law, demography or media related aspects of
migration policy and draft evidence-based suggestions/ recommendations for the new Migration
Strategy of Georgia.
Examples of the possible research topics:
Below presented examples of possible research projects could be chosen by the participants of
the Summer School for their research as whole, partially or modified. Summer School
participants may also suggest their own research topics. In any case, the research project shall
include research on selected topic and recommendations for long-term migration strategic
planning in Georgia.
Demography and Social Sciences: Effects of migration in Georgia on population size and
composition; Nexus between migration trends and population aging in Georgia; Feminisation of
migration and possible effects on fertility rates.
Economics: Impact of remittances on Georgian economy; Possible impacts of return migration
on Georgian economy and labour market; Economic “push and pull” for Georgian migrants;
Facilitation of the Georgian Diaspora role in developments in Georgia.
Human Rights: Human rights and issues of security in Georgia; Detention and forced return
from Georgia and human rights; Shortages of the asylum procedure in Georgia; Integration
challenges in Georgia and human rights.
Media: Informing about migration as a preventive measure of irregular migration, trafficking and
other migration-related crimes; Organisation and maintenance of migration-related debate in
Georgian media; Cooperation in the area of migration management between state institutions,
civil society and media
