TheantiphonandthereadingsbothexpresstheChurch'sjoyinanticipationoftheResurrection,whichwewill
celebrate on April 5 and henceforth. You will notice at today’s Masses, in accordance with a long-standing
Churchtradition,thatthepriestswillwearalightershadeofpurple(rose)vestments,asareminderthatoursalvationisclosertousthanwhenLentbegan.
ThisremindsmeofaveryopportunequestionthattheRomanPontiffEmeritusBenedictXVIpositsinhisbook,
JesusofNazareth(Part1),publishedfouryearsago:“WhatdidJesusactuallybring,ifnotworldpeace,universal
prosperity,andabetterworld?Whathashebrought?”
Itisaquestionwealsoneedtoask,judgingbywhatweseeandexperiencearoundus(lackofworldpeace,miseryallover,andaworldthatattimesseemstobeheadedtowardsaprecipice).WhatgoodisittofollowJesus
Christ?Twomillenniasincehewalkedonthisearth,whatcanweclaimwithcertaintythathehasbroughtus?
PopeBenedictprovidesustheanswer:

path that we human beings have to take in this world. Jesus has brought God and with God the
truthaboutouroriginanddestiny:faith,hope,andlove.Itisonlybecauseofourhardnessofheart
thatwethinkthisistoo little.Yes,indeed,God’spowerworksquietlyinthisworld,butitisthe
trueandlastingpower.Againandagain,God’scauseseemstobeinitsdeaththroes.Yetoverand

There will be two special Masses celebrating milestone years for
married couples. The Archbishop will celebrate Mass:
April 19, 2015 - 3 pm for couples celebrating
50 years of Christian marriage or more years.
May 3, 2015 - 3 pm for couples who
are celebrating 25 and 5 years of marriage.
Both liturgies are at the Cathedral Basilica and couples need to
register with Sr. Vilma (973-751-2002) in order to receive certificates. Registration is due on April 8th for 50 years and April 22nd

POPE FRANCIS: GRANDPARENTS FORM THE PERMANENT 'CHOIR'
OF A GREAT SPIRITUAL SHRINE
The value and importance of grandparents in the family was
the theme of Pope Francis' catechesis during this Wednesday's General
Audience in St. Peter's Square. Firstly, Francis affirmed that he was
able to identify with grandparents as he is of the same age. “When I
was in the Philippines, the people called me 'Lolo Kiko,' or rather,
'Grandpa Francis',” he said, emphasising that although society tends to
reject the elderly, the Lord does not. On the contrary, He calls us to
follow Him in all stages of life as old age too “contains a grace and a
mission, a true vocation.”
“However, it is not yet the time to 'set down our oars',” he said.
“This period of life is different from those that preceded it. Without
doubt; we must also reinvent it a little since our societies are not yet
spiritually or morally ready to fully appreciate it. Previously, in fact, it
was not normal to have so much free time; today far more so. And even
Christian spirituality has been taken a little by surprise, and has had to Pope Francis arrives at the Paul VI Hall on Friday

grandparents and the elderly is a great gift for the Church. It is a great
injection of wisdom for all society, especially for those who are too busy,
too encumbered, too distracted. Someone has to sing the signs of God for
these people too, to proclaim the signs of God. Let us look at Benedict
XVI, who has chosen to spend the final part of his life in prayer and in
listening to God. Olivier Clement, a great Orthodox Christian from the
last century, said, “A civilization where one does not pray is a civilisation

in which old age no longer has any meaning. And this is terrifying: more
than anything we need the elderly who pray, because old age was given to
us for this.”
“We (the elderly) are able to thank the Lord for the favors received, and fill the emptiness of ingratitude that surrounds us. We can intercede for the expectations of the new generations and give dignity to the memory and sacrifices of
those past. We can remind the ambitious young that a life without love is arid. We can say to the fearful young that anguish about the future can be defeated. We can teach the young who are too wrapped up in themselves that there is more
joy in giving than in receiving. Grandparents form the permanent 'choir' of a great spiritual shrine, where prayer of supplication and hymns of praise support the community that works and struggles in the field of life.”
Likewise, “prayer incessantly purifies the heart. Praise and supplication to God prevent the hardening of the heart
in resentment and selfishness. How sad it is to see the cynicism of an elderly person who has lost the sense of his or her
own testimony, who is disdainful towards the young and does not communicate the wisdom of a lifetime! Instead, it is
beautiful to see the encouragement that an elderly person is able to transmit to the young in search of the meaning of
faith and life. It is truly the mission of grandparents, the vocation of the elderly. The words of the elderly hold something
special for the young. And they know this. The words my grandmother wrote to me on the day of my priestly ordination I
still carry with me now, in my breviary; I often read them and this does me good.”

forming the future with
Purpose, Passion and Power!
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK. . .
St. Peter’s School was visited this week by
Susan Hillers, ambassador for the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. This was the pre-visit
prior to the formal visit by an entire team.
Our school is currently undertaking the selfstudy process required by the association for accreditation. The representative from Middle States met
with me, Father Ivan and members of the faculty,
Mrs. Reese and Mrs. Bartels, who comprise the Internal Coordinating team. The purpose of the meeting
was to discuss the protocols and requirements expected for the next visit. From April 21-24 two other
members of the Middle States’ team will join Ms. Hillers at St. Peter’s School. They will observe our classes
and talk to our priests, students, teachers and parents
as part of the accreditation process. At the end of
their visit recommendations will be made in the continuing efforts to provide a faith- filled and strong academic education for our students.
The team will be supplied with a document
completed by the faculty. It will describe our mission
as well as our adherence to the twelve standards required by the Middle States Association. An action
plan developed by our teachers will include student
and organizational objectives. It will focus on student
performance and our vision for the future of the
school.
We are looking forward to this process as we
strive to make St. Peter’s School the best school that
it can be. We ask that you pray for our school community as we participate in this important process.
THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND
FOR INNER-CITY CHILDREN
The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children invites
you to apply for a partial-tuition scholarship for your child for
the 2015-2016 school year. Applications are available by visiting
their website at www.sficnj.org. Partial-tuition scholarship are
awarded based on financial need without regard to race, religion
or ethnicity. The deadline to submit your completed application
is April 15, 2015.
Being a current scholarship recipient does not guarantee an automatic scholarship award for the 2015-2016 school
year. Current recipients as well as all new applicants must submit a completed application every year along with $30 application fee and the required financial documentation. In addition,
all previous financial award amounts are not guaranteed and can
be changed from year to year.
All applicants will be notified of their decision on or
before May 29, 2015.
